Hello Jessie, This is Brian from New Zealand. I have a Mac Pro 5,1 and it had Mojave installed with a PCI SSD 256gb and a Radeon Sapphire graphics card. I churned through channels and channels of very good you tube tutorials , but the one thing no one could solve for me was the boot picker problem - EFI boot picker screen. Jessie, the quality of your videos is unbelievable. Have been following you for about 2 years. Also your support in the comment section is incredible. Without you I would have bought a new mac a long time ago…❤
I’ve watched this in amazement, for ages I’ve swapped the very old apple supported gpu out when ever I’ve installed a new os from USB, this makes so much sense. Thanks again Jessie - I’m sure many of us relate to this, under the desk, etc.😂
Just updated my 2010 Mac Pro 5.1to Sonoma with no issues using OCLP and your excellent advice Thankyou so much. The only difficulty I had is the stage when you insert the USB EFi to set up the installation. Unfortunately as you say this doesn’t seem to work when you have a metal GPU such as the Radeon Sapphire 580 as there is no EFI Boot screen. Luckily I found the solution advised yourJessie’s Flying channel by removing all drives, booting up with the EFi USB in place then shutting down. Restarting with a drive in then worked perfectly. So grateful to be able to continue using my Mac Pro for some time yet! Next challenge is setting up a drive with Windows so I can run some windows 3D scanning software. Thanks again to the whole team that make this possible. I did ponder whether I might have problems with an older Mac Pro but it seems to have updated correctly so far.
Hi Jessie, what a lifesaver of a tutorial. After upgrading my dual cpu Mac Pro 5,1 (X5690 cpu's, NVME drive on PCIE adapter, PC version of rx580 gpu, 48GB of RAM, upgraded wifi/bluetooth adapter, MacOS Mojave) I was totally frustrated by the inability of my machine to display the OCLP EFI boot option on startup. For several days I tried every possible thing I could think of, scoured the forums and youtube for solutions all to no avail. I was on the point of giving up when I found you tutorial and bingo! I am successfully running Monterey and can finally get a decent night's sleep. Next step is ubgrade to Sonoma. So thank you Jessie for all the effort you put into sharing your expertise with us less technically minder users.
I have no luck yet!! am running high sierra 10.13.6 on a ssd on a 2009 mac pro 5,1 rom version 144.000.000 with graphic card readon RX560 , when i follow this tutoral, nothing shows on screen!! I am trying to install sonoma but no luck so far, I feel exhausted just like Jhon or is it that i need to progressively el capitan then high sierra then mojave and then sonoma??? :(
I can't believe this is so simple!! It just makes sense! I've had this issue for almost a year now and I only just came across this video. Such an easy and simple fix. Thank you Jessie
Wow, glad that I came across your video. After having successfully installed OCLP and Big Sur on one of my two 5,1 MacPros, I've run into problems with the second machine even though they are virtually identically setup. Thanks.
Thank you for this post. I couldn't get the boot picker screen after updating from 13.6.4 to 13.6.5 on a 2014 Mac Pro 6,1, but fixed the issue following your instructions.
Jessie, I have an update. After several attempts, I was able to install Monterey on my Mac Pro 2009. You do not know how happy you made me by giving me this tip and all your videos on Open Core. I cannot thank you enough! I have to ask the question . . . is the Open Core package now stable enough on Ventura? All the best!
Very clear and easy description. Thanks a lot for such videos. Your channel is the best for working with apple pc's which overrun apples hardware life time. 👍
Hi Jessie, that's exactly what I do (as I commented on your other video, a while ago) with Big Sur and it works perfectly. Thanks so much for your valuable advice brother
can you install onto your existing hd that has mojave on? for instance my nvm2 pcie ssd os currently my boot drive running mojave can I install it there or do you have to completely start again?
is it a patched version (i.e. dosdude1's patch)? then i don't recommend updating. if it is a stock macOS you can do it, but I still recommend starting fresh....
What about Nvme Drives in your PCI 16x slot? I have 2 SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB NVMe drives in a Syba Dual M.2 M-Key NVMe Ports to PCIe 3.0 x16 Bifurcation Riser Controller - Support Non-Bifurcation Motherboard (SI-PEX40129). Due to the adhesive tape for the heat sink this is not trivial.
Great video Jessie. How the hell do you know this stuff!! Your knowledge is astounding. A few questions please? 1. Do I HAVE to use an SSD? Can I use a regular blank Hard drive? 2. The Hard Drive I would LIKE to use has so many apps, 100s of plugins and customizations that I’ve perfected over many years for work. If I use a PC Card (I have the same Sapphire btw), does it mean that the only way I can move to Big Sur would be to forfeit my customizations? 3. Is there anyway, to install Big Sur on an existing HD and keep my customizations? (even if I have to use a USB Drive)?
@@colinaguiar9682 thx! you can use your hard disk, but it will be slow. You can update to Big Sur, but you’ll need OpenCore. There is a chance that it won’t work and you’ll lose your data, so maybe use another hard disk or SSD to test an install first
Spent a week pulling my hair out with white circle of doom every time I installed OCLP on boot drive, but doing it this way around fixed it all :) Yaaaaaaaaay Thanks
Hello again Jessie. Despite watching three of your videos about ten times, I fail to understand the reason for using a blank drive. I even bought a new SATA SSD. Tbh the ideal thing for me would be to use opencore to be able to run the update on my current system drive. So if I want to achieve this do I just re-connect my current drive at the end of the process shown in this video, instead of connecting a blank drive?
Hi Jessie. I have a 5.1 with a Sapphire RX 580. Currently I have an NVME drive in a PCI slot that I boot Mojave (and HS) from. That setup works well. If I install Monterey to a new blank SSD in one of the drive bays like you did (and just leave the NVME currently as is; I would still remove temporarily to install Monterey) would I still be able to go back and forth from Mojave to Monterey either through opencore or startup disk?
Basically yes as OCLP can boot different macOS versions. But it might be tricky as some NVRAM variables might be different. But it’s no harm to try it, maybe a NVRAM reset is needed in between
I found your channel maybe 2 years ago and it was worth to check it again. Will make a abo now. Your videos are very detailled and professional. Moving soon my 2009 MacPro to the lastest OS. One short question, you said a prerequisite is to have a USB stick with Monterey prepared. Would it also work directly with Open Core & Ventura? I plan to install it on a new M.2 NVMe SSD. But I also have the original graphics card available. Or better first Monterey and then Ventura? Thank you
Hi Jessie, first of all congratulations for your channel and for the high professionalism and experience that stand out from your tutorials! I've been trying to install Sonoma for two days on my Mac Pro 5.1 (2010) with AMD Radeon VII GPU but I can't start (by holding down the Option key after the chime) the OC BOOT from the USB pen drive where the installer Sonoma and containing OC in the EFI partition (prepared with OCLP). I tried to follow the suggestion from Dortania's OCLP site but without success. I finally saw your video on CZcams and then I followed all the steps, but unfortunately even after resetting the NVRAM (two chimes) the screen remains black! Do you have any suggestions or help you can give me to solve the problem? Thanks so much in advance!
thx! Sonoma won't have any video acceleration for Vega VII GPUs (yet) - so I recommend either another GPU or staying with Monterey (there is video acceleration even for 6800XT). But you should be able to see OC boot selector - did you try different outputs like HDMI?
Thanks Jassie for your quick response! I still have a Radeon 580rx Nitro+ but then I purchased the Radeon VII because the Nitro+ being taller did not allow me to install the HighPoint NVMe RAID Controller Card in the adjacent slot and did not allow me to manage the 2 monitors (Apple Cinema Display 30" and Apple LED Diaplay 27"). If so, which graphics card would you recommend me to buy to replace the Radeon VII and compatible with Sonoma? Finally: if I try to connect one of the monitors to the HDMI port of the Radeon VII should I still see the OC Boot? Furthermore, since I had to change keyboards during the installation tests (with the same extended Apple keyboard) because one suddenly no longer responded to Command+R, Command+Option+P+R and Command+Option commands. In your opinion, is the keyboard recoverable (i.e. repairing it but I don't know how) or should it be thrown away? Thanks so much in advance!
I would like to add that the keyboard with the Option and Command keys not working, I just tried it with another Mac Pro 3.1 (2008) and it worked perfectly! Strange right?
@@lambertoangeli6321 as far as I know fastest card supported by Sonoma is RX580 (maybe Vega 64…?) you should see OC boot selector, but NVMe cards can cause trouble. Did you put USB hub between MacPro and keyboard?
Jessie, Can you help me please? I have an imac 27-inch late 2015 .. and suddenly it stopped, and after a lot of searching, I made sure that the graphics card was corrupted.. Now I run it with Windows, but of course without defining the graphics card.. The Mac system cannot work without defining the graphics card, so it does not work with the Mac os .. from In your opinion, is there any alternative solution other than changing the graphics card or changing the motherboard? I searched a lot to turn it on as a monitor, but my model does not support it
@@JessiesFlying Thank you for your reply.. I would be grateful to you if the link is available with you.. Also, what do you think about this? The 2015 iMac can not be used as a display. 2014 iMacs were the last to support target display mode as these were before the 5K screens were introduced, which requires too much bandwidth.
Jessie, thank you for this video, i’ve been struggling with this problem for quie a while. Jessie, i was looking at rEFInd Boot Selector Alternative for OS's on Mac’s, could this be another easier alternative option that could solve this problem? Have you tried it yet?
hi Jessie, thanks so much for all your videos. So if I have a mac pro 5,1 with a RX-580 Special Edition that's been flashed to get the boot screen, can I bypass this usb installer?
Now its working, but 2 topics took a lot of time: 1. USB Stick must be in a USB HUB 2. NO DISPLAY CONNECTOR, HDMI I had to plug in cable again after the chime sound... It installs the monterey now.... I use a pc card RX580, Firmware of the 5,1 is updated to latest version. Open core boot screen, still not pops up, but the language selector appears... Maybe something I forgot to do, maybe somebody has an idea....?
Hi, thank you for your time. How did you solve the installation to the hard drive so it launches without a USB? I'm trying to complete this part but it requires me to boot pressing the Option key. Thank you!
Hello Jessie I am looking for help, I have a mac pro 5.1 mid (2012) I installed an M.2 2280 NVMe WD BLACK through pcie express x4 and everything was fine, the mac pro recognized it, the question is that it does not allow me to install macOS BigSur through opencore in the M.2, it only allows me to install it on the old HDD, by the way I already formatted the M.2 drive in AFPS format with GUID partition map Help pls
Hi May I know Why it’s not happening on my macpro 5,1 rx580.😢 I tried more than 24hrs, nothing happened. Only blank screen. I’m trying to jump from Mojave to Sonoma through OCLP latest. Kindly help.
This was very helpful Thankyou, I have a Mac Pro 5,1 with RX580 Only thing i am having trouble with is after starting up again Open core tells me it has detected i am booting from usb would i like to install to disk. So i go through installing Opencore to Internal HD it then asks me to reboot again, Its at that point i cant get into boot selector to chose the Internal EFI to boot from there. Can you help me with this? any tips?
Would this work the same installing Linux to a clean drive? I'm stuck with an older, no boot screen, GPU and can't put the Saphire 590 on until I have a newer version of Apple OS, but I'm done with Apple OS, want to move to Linux.
Hi Jessie, many thanks for the video. I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 with RAID configuration on two SSD drives as my main desktop and one SATA 1 TB drive for extra storage. When I got to the screen to install the new OS it says I can’t select my SSD because it’s a raid config. So I chose the 1 TB drive as that’s my only option. What are your thoughts? How can I install the OS on my SSD? Thank you.
I just realised you're using an adaptor to attach the SSD to the bay loader - could you tell me where you can get one of those, or what it's called? tahnks.

Hi Jessie, Your instructions for the MacPro are wonderful. I'm going to go for an upgrade on it. I have the same problem as you described, that I can't see the bootselctor because of the metalcard for Mojave. Now my question: I have an SSD PCIe card installed. The MacOS Mojave installed on it I want to update with OpenCore to Monterey and not completely reinstall because otherwise I would have to reinstall all my programs again. What do I have to do to make this work: - Take out PCIe card like all other hard drives - Boot USB-Stick and delete NVRAM - Turn off the Mac again - Reinstall the PCI card with MAcOS Mojave - Boot from USB stick - Install Monterey over it Does it fit like this or is there still something to basically consider when updating the system? Many greetings Thomas
Hi, PCIe cards are always tricky and it depends on the chipset. I would preferably install macOS on a SSD (SATA) and use the PCIe for storage / apps....
So glad I’ve seen this. I’ve got the Sapphire 590 card and have been trying ton install Ventura on my 5.1 and after building opencore and doing the restart I wasn’t getting the EFI boot image and it was driving me mad
hey jessie, doesn´t it work with just holding "c" at bootup, so the usb bootable drive will be selected first during boot instead of the hdd/ssds or does the OC bootpicker didn´t show up then?
Hi, sorry for my English, I'm writing to you from Italy, I have a Mac Pro 3.1, for this procedure can I use an AMD RADEON RX580 8gb XFX? Thanks for the explanation for the NV Ram reset is congratulations for the videos
Jessie 🎉you are a joy to watch ! Are you not able to reset the nvram by pressing space bar when you get into EFI boot picker and choose reset nvram option? My cmd option r+p doesn’t work ….also where do you get the ssd caddy to fit into the hard drive sled?
That's the missing link for all us starving artists who can't afford an original Apple GPU with Metal. I had given up the install with the original GT120. You've put out some crucial information which the other tutorials never mention. However, I still have no joy here on my MP 4,1 upgraded to 5,1. Has this config ever been tested? It boots into the opencore boot screen but I get 3 options with plain terminal looking icons. Hitting either one is followed by a loud chime and after about 20 seconds it goes back into the initial opencore selection with the 3 options. I never get to the point where you can choose the installer on the USB drive. For me it's experiment failed so far. I suppose I'll have to stick with Mojave until the good old cheese grater has a hardware meltdown 🙃
@@JessiesFlying Yes I followed all the instructions I could find to the T, yours and from other sources. My USB drive is looping in the OC boot selector. First I see 3 black icons that look like the terminal. They are called BootKicker.efi, OpenShell.efi and Reset NVRAM. I did the NVRAM thing, then it returns back to the boot selector. When I hit BootKicker.efi I get to the fancy icon EFI boot. When I hit that the screen goes black for 20 seconds, a loud chime rings and then it goes back to the first boot screen with the 3 terminal icons. It never gets to the Monterey installer which is on my USB drive, connected on the front panel. I looped like this at least 10 times hoping it might find its right way but no such luck. Thanks much for your reply btw.
Jessie, thank you very much for the information!. Your videos have saved me so much time, I much appreciate it. I installed Open Core 0.6.8 on my Mac 5.1. I am running Big Sur. Everything was running fine until I tried swapping the GPU. I purchased an XFX Radeon 580 GPU. When the booting process starts, I see the Open Core icon, then the Mac logo with the progress bar underneath, when about 1/3 of the progress bar is filled, the screen goes to black, and I can not see anything else. Would you know what can be making this happen? Thnak you very much in advance for your help.
Did you install root patch? then it probably was installed matching your old GPU, so you need to get the old GPU in, uninstall root patch, reboot (and maybe NVRAM reset) with new GPU and then install root patch again (now matching your new GPU) - but be warned, the uninstall of the root patch might brick your macOS, so make a backup first!
I tried doing your method, but nothing on the screen after seeing the open core logo…? Just a blank screen. Any ideas would help..On my rx580, there are no switches…thanks
Let me clarify, the logo opencore with arrow pointing at it. After booting into that opencore logo, it switches to the Apple boot up screen to. Just a little bit booting into the Apple logo screen, the screen goes blank.
I tried all the ports, 2 dp n 2 hdmi. All the ports boot up to the opencore logo with the arrow n then to the Apple logo. After a little bit it goes to a blank screen. it never goes to the boot picker screen. Thank you so much for the help. I will keep trying. If you have any other ideas, please let me know….
I have a Radeon RX580 Sapphire Nitro as well, but flashed with Apple EDI. It is a 2010 flashed 5,1 that has been moved to Catalina with DosDudes patcher. When I restart after installing open core to the USB and press option at reboot, no chooser appears, it just loads into Catalina. Will this fix work? I have a blank SSD that I want to install Monterey on (I would want to go to Ventura, but Open Core Patcher 1.4.3 reminds me that many items will not work.
Hey Jessie, unfortunately my MacPro 5.1 with standard GeForce graphics card just won't show up the boot selector menu. regardless of whether there are hard drives plugged in or not. Also reset of NVRAM and so on just doesn't help.. Do I have forgotten something or are there special options in open core patcher? It sucks, I can't get it done since weeeks and tried everything.. Thanks so much!
That’s weird, even with no harddisks and only USB after resetting NVRAM no OpenCore? Try the following: unplug it, keep power button pressed for 10 seconds, plug it in again and switch it on, then resetting NVRAM 3x in a row….
@@JessiesFlying thanks for the fast response! Unfortunately still not working. Still blank black screen - like he doesn't find the usb stick as an booting device..

Hi! I used my MP 5.1 with Hi Sierra for sound (sample libraries) purposes in headless mode (without the graphic card) by ethernet connection to second computer. If I will install OpenCore and Monterey, should I to buy metall graphic card (Radeon 580), or it can also work in headless mode without graphic card?

THX
Here’s my story, maybe it’s useful to some: Followed the instructions, booted the Mac. It booted right into the installer. No EFI whatever to choose. No Open Core showed up. I let it install. In the middle of the installation process the Mac just shut down. So I thought that I did something wrong. After endless drive in and out swapping, redoing the USB, countless NVRAM resets and researching the internet I found out that my my Mac did not have the right firmware which has to be 1.44. Mine was still on 140. To update the firmware one must install High Sierra on a drive connected to a SATA port and then start the Mojave installer which will tell you that your Mac needs a firmware update and will tell you what to do. No need to install Mojave after the firmware is up to date. My Mac was already running Mojave but did not have the right firmware nonetheless. After the firmware update the Mac was still booting directly into the installer, still no EFI whatever. No Open Core showing up. After even more endless messing around out of sheer frustration I just let the installer run and et voila, it worked. Just like that. Conclusion: You need firmware 1.44. Check at „About This Mac - System Report“ It doesn’t matter when Open Core doesn’t show up like shown in this video at 3.21. Just running the installer might work ! Good luck !
Jessie should Pin this. It helped me, I had the latest firmware on my 5,1 but with 16min left on the installer my screen would go black, I kept resetting nvram and going through it again to no avail, finally just left it alone and let it do its black screens and eventually it installed. Mac Pro 5,1 with RX480 GPU
Oh great ! It worked absolutely fine, thanks. I didn't have to replace my RX580 8g by the original gpu that came with my MP5,1 2010 server. But, alas, I have an issue : It booted up to Big Sur (the OS I chose to install) but when I reboot after a session of one one hour, the Mac, boots, black screen for 4/5 minutes and he shut down by itself. So, I replaced the drives and booted on Mojave, and he doesn't see Big Sur, only a "name of the disk" - datas, so I can't select it at my default boot drive. Any Idea ? But your trick works great, I'm sure I'm not for to enjoy Big Sur on this old Mac. Edit: oh gosh I think I have the answer... I patched Big Sur on a M2, not from the computer which is the target.
I have Mac Pro 5,1 and I installed MacOs 13,3,1 on OWG SSD PCI, by OCLP, Now I want to install Windows 10 to internal apple SSD HD, I can't find correct way to do that.. Could you help me please?
You helped me get the boot picker for the install on my 2012 Mac Pro with a Saphire 580. Thanks! . Now I'm at the point where I want to boot from internal hard drive. I let the Open Core Patcher do its thing, click restart, hold option, remove usb key and get a black screen with no boot picker so I am stumped. Thanks for your help.
when you have a PC graphic card installed, you cannot hold OPTION key anymore as you don't see Apple boot selector. the OpenCore boot selector should show up automatically... 🤔 did you check if your RX580 is in "game mode"?
@@JessiesFlying Thankyou for your help again and I had no idea there was a game mode. A boot selector shows up as long as the USB key installed. The options that show up do not include EFI open core. On the last interface it says to reboot holding option. I believe it was Mr. MacIntosh who said to pull the key and press option. I was recently able to install Monterey on a stock early 2008 iMac. It's so slow... should I install an older Mac OS version? Its supported El Capitan works fine and fast, so should I go to High Sierra or Big Sur, whichever gives me decent speed better than Monterey?
@@JessiesFlying I've got High Sierra running natively on a different iMac 2011, and it seems fast enough. My worry is that soon latest web browser updates (eg Chrome, Safari, Firefox) for High Sierra will be gone and that makes it less useful for regular use.
Hi Jessie, thanks for the guide! I just tried this and it seemed to be working... until after installation. Following the install, it went into a loop where it restarted back to the installer. When I try to boot into my new install of Big Sur, the boot screen loads halfway under the Apple, then stops. I can't get it to go beyond this.
Jessie, I've the same hardware and soft as you. I follow step by step but doesn't work . Could be a Display Port cable Monitor? another thing. After installation, how do you swap between Monterey and other OSX if Monterey will need EFI boot picker to jump to another OSX? and not key Option hold (in my case 'Catalina running Ok with rx580 but doesn't see startup Monterey active on System Preferences (only folder Update)--> What I am doing bad? thk in advance.
You should be able to select different macOS‘es within OpenCore, so it’s OK if always „EFI Boot“ (OpenCore) starts first. Display port may be an issue, and make sure the RX580 is in „Game Mode“ (very tiny switch)
I'd I have tried everything for the past 6 days and can't get my rx 580 to load at all it only displays an error and shows a mouse and a pad then says setupmac error I have reset the nvram no luck its a 2012 Mac pro 1 CPU 16 gigs of RAM idk I'm at a loss I have tried everything
I actually fixed it when I built the loader it was from a 2015 Macbook pro I rebuilt it from my other 5,1 and when I built it I ticked the box saying inject the AMD loader so I was able to have a boot loader during the whole install because it loaded from the USB when the OS was installed I was about to inject and build
I dont understand. I did this, and instead my machine goes through the NVRAM reset, and then goes directly to the recovery environment / installer for Sonoma. It boots, and it runs, but I still dont ever see the boot** selector. What gives?
@@nickwynne8211 maybe the 5 second wait for the OpenCore is too quick for your screen to display. Boot up and wiggle the arrow keys left and right and see if the auto start is cancelled and you see the OpenCore boot selector then

Hey Jessie, big thanks for your reply and knowledge share. You're exactly right about the "game mode" tiny switch. For future reference, for others like myself not super versed in graphics cards, right out of the box the sapphire rx580 nitro only worked through DP port (not either of the two HDMI nor the DVI) now that "game mode" switch is on my boot drive can be seen with all outputs.
That is awesome. I have a Mac Pro coming Thursday and this was my biggest concern. You are a lifesaver, thank you. 👍👍

I have a question after this attempt can I have 2 Mac Os systems in 2 different ssd's one mojave and the other monterey without problems?
Yes, that should work 👍
What about Nvme Drives in your PCI 16x slot? I have 2 SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB NVMe drives in a Syba Dual M.2 M-Key NVMe Ports to PCIe 3.0 x16 Bifurcation Riser Controller - Support Non-Bifurcation Motherboard (SI-PEX40129). Due to the adhesive tape for the heat sink this is not trivial.
I never tried that but I think Martin Los package had support for NVMe (not sure if OCLP has it)…
Great video Jessie.

Yes, you can update your system. The procedure here is only for making the Mac booting EFI boot without having a boot screen and to remember it
Thank you
You can do it directly with Ventura, but I do not recommend it right now for MacPro 2012 or 2013 - I would install Monterey 👍

@@JessiesFlying
I would like to add that the keyboard with the Option and Command keys not working, I just tried it with another Mac Pro 3.1 (2008) and it worked perfectly! Strange right?

Jessie, Can you help me please?
I have an imac 27-inch late 2015 .. and suddenly it stopped, and after a lot of searching, I made sure that the graphics card was corrupted.. Now I run it with Windows, but of course without defining the graphics card.. The Mac system cannot work without defining the graphics card, so it does not work with the Mac os .. from In your opinion, is there any alternative solution other than changing the graphics card or changing the motherboard?
I searched a lot to turn it on as a monitor, but my model does not support it
There is a little board that turns it into a monitor (you get rid of the Mainboard and graphic card) - I think Luke Miani had a video about it
@@JessiesFlying Thank you for your reply.. I would be grateful to you if the link is available with you.. Also, what do you think about this?
The 2015 iMac can not be used as a display. 2014 iMacs were the last to support target display mode as these were before the 5K screens were introduced, which requires too much bandwidth.

Hi Jessie,
Your instructions for the MacPro are wonderful. I'm going to go for an upgrade on it.
I have the same problem as you described, that I can't see the bootselctor because of the metalcard for Mojave.
Now my question:
I have an SSD PCIe card installed. The MacOS Mojave installed on it I want to update with OpenCore to Monterey and not completely reinstall because otherwise I would have to reinstall all my programs again.
What do I have to do to make this work:
- Take out PCIe card like all other hard drives
- Boot USB-Stick and delete NVRAM
- Turn off the Mac again
- Reinstall the PCI card with MAcOS Mojave
- Boot from USB stick
- Install Monterey over it
Does it fit like this or is there still something to basically consider when updating the system?
Many greetings

@@user-xp5vu5bc6q grundsätzlich schon, aber Martin Lo‘s Paket ist nur für den Mac Pro und nur bis Monterey
Here’s my story, maybe it’s useful to some:
Followed the instructions, booted the Mac.
Conclusion:
You need firmware 1.44.
Check at „About This Mac - System Report“
It doesn’t matter when Open Core doesn’t show up like shown in this video at 3.21.
Just running the installer might work !
Good luck !
Thanks for sharing your findings!

@@dwaynestimpson5449 will do another help video and definitively include that!
Check out my tutorial here: czcams.com/video/XY55DD1Iym8/video.html
You helped me get the boot picker for the install on my 2012 Mac Pro with a Saphire 580. Thanks! . Now I'm at the point where I want to boot from internal hard drive. I let the Open Core Patcher do its thing, click restart, hold option, remove usb key and get a black screen with no boot picker so I am stumped. Thanks for your help.
OpenCore Boot Picker enabled in settings.
when you have a PC graphic card installed, you cannot hold OPTION key anymore as you don't see Apple boot selector. the OpenCore boot selector should show up automatically...
Show does checking for game mode involve pulling the card? that is a non starter it took half a day to install it correctly. I can live with the usb key inserted.
If I remember correctly,(and the card was installed around Mojave so maybe I don't) I selected the more stable option.
@@JessiesFlying I just rebooted without the key. Does not boot to any screen. Added the key ,did not press option, and Install OS, MacHD and EFI show up. Only boots from Mac HD. I see several apps like Clover or Open Core Configurator available. Do you reccomend either?
I was recently able to install Monterey on a stock early 2008 iMac. It's so slow... should I install an older Mac OS version? Its supported El Capitan works fine and fast, so should I go to High Sierra or Big Sur, whichever gives me decent speed better than Monterey?
High Sierra doesn’t need Metal so I would recommend that…
@@JessiesFlying I've got High Sierra running natively on a different iMac 2011, and it seems fast enough. My worry is that soon latest web browser updates (eg Chrome, Safari, Firefox) for High Sierra will be gone and that makes it less useful for regular use.
@@be236 then I recommend Big Sur with OpenCore, runs nearly flawlessly on my iMac 2011
@@JessiesFlying Ok, but can I run Mojave or Catalina on my other iMac 2008 so that it's not so sluggish currently on Monterey?
@@be236 they all needs Metal GPU, so then use high Sierra
Hi Jessie, thanks for the guide! I just tried this and it seemed to be working... until after installation. Following the install, it went into a loop where it restarted back to the installer. When I try to boot into my new install of Big Sur, the boot screen loads halfway under the Apple, then stops. I can't get it to go beyond this.
Do you have anything else plugged in?
Thanks you 👍
So I have to wipe my computer in order to change my video card? Is there another way to reset PRAM without starting a fresh install?
No, this video is for getting it to boot from USB without apple boot selector
I'd I have tried everything for the past 6 days and can't get my rx 580 to load at all it only displays an error and shows a mouse and a pad then says setupmac error I have reset the nvram no luck its a 2012 Mac pro 1 CPU 16 gigs of RAM idk I'm at a loss I have tried everything
did you check if it's in "game mode"? if not it won't show a screen (if it's a Sapphire)
@@TCRTechLife great! 👍
I dont understand. I did this, and instead my machine goes through the NVRAM reset, and then goes directly to the recovery environment / installer for Sonoma. It boots, and it runs, but I still dont ever see the boot** selector. What gives?
@@nickwynne8211 you won’t see Apple boot selector at all with a PC graphics card, only the OpenCore boot selector
@@JessiesFlying im not getting any boot selector at all
@@nickwynne8211 maybe the 5 second wait for the OpenCore is too quick for your screen to display. Boot up and wiggle the arrow keys left and right and see if the auto start is cancelled and you see the OpenCore boot selector then
@@JessiesFlying what firmware are your running? I am 1.4.4.x

Would this only install mac os to an empty drive? What about updating from Mojave on a 5,1 macpro
Same procedure when you do an update 👍
Will this way work all the way through the install and into the desktop?? I had my oem card installed and o could not get a screen to come up at all the only thing that poped up wa sa warning that i need to reinstall macos
that should work, but you can't see the Apple boot selector without a flashed GPU
Hi, I did that but now I cant boot to anything at all. Event when I plus back my drive with linux on it for exemple. Any idea how to "go back". I try the vram reset but I doesnt work
I try a lot of bootable thing on the USB and nothing ever show
@@lenylecointre3304 so when you do NVRAM reset and you only have 1 bootable drive it should boot from there
but what if I just want to do the upgrade option and keep all my software? if I hotswap the drive and plug it in while in the boot menu?
then install opencore to the drive, it should boot it automatically and then do the update
@@JessiesFlying ya got it, it upgraded with all my content still on there, right now struggling to force Firewire to work.. Thanks for all the help.. blessings
Hey Jessie, Could I ask you if your are using the HDMI or DVI port out of the sapphire graphics card? For some reason I am not getting the boot loader after pulling out all the drivers and inserting my EFI USB stick. Thank you!
or maybe the display port cables? I've only tried the HDMI ports and those aren't working for me. I can update once I acquire my dp/dvi. Thanks again
@@Igor-ck6zl I use HDMI and display port. Check if your graphic card has a tiny switch for “game mode” - it has to set to it
Hey Jessie, big thanks for your reply and knowledge share. Still am chipping away at install, not finished yet, but I will be looking at your other videos closely before asking for more guidance. Thanks again!
