The Ram is still free. Its GSkill. This is a waaaayy better deal than anything INTEL can offer. Even so i am committed to AMD this time. Cheers, Cheerio, Bobs Your Uncle.

Hey Leo, thanks for the review. I was wondering if you could help answer this for me as I've only ever been able to find people talk about the sometimes quite large performance difference of DDR5 vs DDR4 on a high end Raptor Lake system in relation to gaming performance but does this translate to productivity workloads too? Will using DDR4 3200 leave a lot of the 13700K performance on the table in non-gaming workloads?

But CPU power draw is 230W and max core temperature is less than 90C using an air cooler Scythe Mugen 5. Try undervolting as it helps with performance by reducing the power draw and temperature.

I am thinking of building a new system for Unity / Unreal VR Dev. The i7 13700k is on my radar, but, I am concerned about the temps. I will happily undervolt the cpu but I am wondering if manufacturers are deliberately allowing the 13th gen cpu's to max out so that the synthetic stats look better in testing....therefore making buyers think the cpu's are far more superior. I don't have an issue with this generation, but, I am aware of the marketing folly involved to get people to spend £400+ for a cpu.

@@sodiumvapor13 Using the ASUS 240MM AIO, the 13700k idles in the low 30 C's. Gaming the 13700k runs around 60-70C. Cinebench when I first got the 13700k, pegged the CPU to 100C but didn't thermal throttle it scored a little over 30k on the test and HWmontior said it was pegging 100c but didn't log any thermal throttle. So.. I under volted the CPU by .05 mv. Now the CPU stays under 96C during Cinebench. I am probably going to get a 1700 socket frame and remove the under volt to see if it tames the temps during Cinebench. IF not I will leave the under volt it doesn't affect the performance but by 100 poin ts in Cinebench. Undervolted it scored 29910. The only time the CPU ever gets hot is running Cinebench and if I wasn't running HWMonitor I wouldn't even known it was hot. Temps stays fine with Time Spy, Firestrke, etc. Just Cinebench warms it up. Full disclosure I am in Florida so it is warmer here than most places.

I got the 13700kf and have not been so impressed by an upgrade in years. I was on a overclocked 10700k before that ran at 5.1gig all core at 1.36v and ran at 80 degrees tops under stress.
After some faff with an asrock bios where settings you make don't apply to the real world and lots of shouting I've got a 13700kf at 8 p cores at 5.4gig and 8 e cores at 4.3. Under cinebench my cpu bare goes above 80 degrees even though I'm pulling 250w and have a vcore at 1.4. That's impressive power to heat efficiency.
Finally in gaming its night and day. I only run 1080p on a hosted up 3070ti and my frame rate has doubled in most titles.
In doom eternal with everything turned my min frame has gone from 50fps to 200fps. In Shadow of tomb raider my min frame rate has gone from 70fos to over 150fps

@KitGuruTech I ran into the same issues as your raptor lake i7 with excess heat and a motherboard insisting the cpu needed unlimited power.
I fixed it by turning off the motherboards dynamic ai overclocking feature that was clashing with intels base profile and limited my v core voltage. I'm now still using 250w on the cpu but my voltage usage is now only 1.4v and my temps don't go much above 80.

@KitGuruTech it's such a shame that the average user will think high temps and noisy fan is just the norm. And if you don't have a top end cooler you will be losing performance due to thermal throtlling. It's like going back 10 years when noisy fans were the norm when in fact its not necessary any more.

  • @CyberneticArgumentCreator

The i7 is again my go-to as it has been for the last 10 years. Always solid, always remains relevant for longer than the i5 of the same generation, always headache-free. Now that the stellar single core performance is paired with the wider grunt of 8 E-cores, it really is the best of both worlds.
And the power draw is virtually never that 250W level. When I have youtube and discord running on my second and third monitor and a game running on my main monitor, my 13700k is barely reaching 100W draw with a 100MHz overclock and a tiny .015V undervolt. The only time it reaches higher is when I run power viruses like Cinebench or specific stress tests. In practice, it sips power. Couldn't be happier. The great memory controller allowing me to run 6000MHz DDR5 with very tight timings and not a single snag is icing on the cake.
