  • THE GREAT MANDALA (The Wheel of Life) - Peter Yarrow
So I told him that he'd better shut his mouth
And do his job like a man.
    And he answered "Listen, Father,
    I will never kill another."
    He thinks he's better
    than his brother that died
What the hell does he think he's doing
To his father who brought him up right?
    Chorus:
Take your place on The Great Mandala
As it moves through your brief moment of time.
Win or lose now you must choose now
And if you lose you're only losing your life.
Tell the jailer not to bother
With his meal of bread and water today.
He is fasting 'til the killing's over
    He's a martyr, he thinks he's a prophet.
    But he's a coward, he's just playing a game
He can't do it, he can't change it
It's been going on for ten thousand years
    (Chorus)
Tell the people they are safe now
Hunger stopped him, he lies still in his cell.
    Death has gagged his accusations
We are free now, we can kill now,
We can hate now, now we can end the world
We're not guilty, he was crazy
And it's been going on for ten thousand years!
Take your place on The Great Mandala
As it moves through your brief moment of time.
Win or lose now you must choose now
And if you lose you've only wasted your life.

I've been listeining to this song since the late 60's when I first heard it. It changed my life and helped me understand that the Viet Nam War was wrong, It spawned a generation of more responsibly thinking people. Richie Havens adds a layer of believeabilty to an alreay supremely believeable song.

I have always loved this song. One of the best anti injustice songs I have ever heard. For me it is deeply rooted in showing how social complacency, will only repeat the cycle of human error. How societies moral code is based on choosing to be blind to some things in our society in order to continue as we have always been. What an amazing time in history for music, some of the greats, I am hard pressed to believe will ever be surpassed.

Bless you, pal. You did the right thing. Never, ever let anyone tell you otherwise. That undeclared war was rotten to the core, and one of its chief architects,a father of the Edsel, Robert McNamara, refused to let his own son, then in college, go to Vietnam. McNamara told LBJ in 1965 the war was unwinnable--as Generals de Gaulle, MacArthur, Eisenhour had cautioned long before -- and that we should extricate ourselves. But Johnson didn't want to be the first US president to lose a war, even an undeclared one, and you know the rest, McNamara's flood of tears on Charlie Rose's program a few years before his death notwithstanding: "Charlie, when I think of all those boys....we were wrong, we were wrong." McNamara was nearly disconsolate and I'm surprised they didn't stop taping, but am glad they did not.

I heard on my cars radio today of the sudden passing of Mr. Havens and many of his songs came to my lips. While I have always loved Peter, Paul and Marys version, I could not think of a better person/singer to join Mr. Yarrow to re-record this. So hauntingly beautiful. When he came to Lihue, Kauai in the mid-70s to raise money for a very small, remote church in Kipahulu, he was elevated to sainthood in my mind! Nobody bothered to do that but him! May peace and comfort be with his family.

I agree with most everyone about an original song being better than a cover. Though, I will admit when an artist with a special gift comes along and and gives their special touch to one of our beloved classics, the goose bumps, chills, and hair raising on the backs of necks tell us a practically perfect union has been achieved. I got that feeling from Disturbed cover of Sound Of Silence, and even Pink's White Rabbit, and even Heart's Tribute to Led Zeppelin's Stairway. As sacred as this song is, I hope someone, some day, an artist, be they either male or female cover this as these 2 masters have given this original!

So here's this Jewish guy .. and here's this black guy .. and .. from way in there where actual emotions seethe and bleed .. they are seething and bleeding in song ..
Peter, we exchanged words at Red Rocks ..
I trust you are well, buddy .. and Richie, vehement/and calm (ying yang in action) may you rest and rouse .. wherever you are ..
This .. this kind of song is not pertinent: it is essential.
Notice how no songs these days speak to any of the tragedies that engulf us.
    It's not a damn shame .. it's a sin .. to be corrected ..
