Great version of the Bill Withers song "Lean On Me" by the great Richie Havens. Check out "Tupelo Honey-Just Like A Woman" and "High Flyin' Bird" on corporalhenshaw
Why has Richie Havens not been nominated into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. The first artist to take the stage at Woodstock should have the recognition he deserves. Should have happened when he was still alive. Great man, great music. We shall not see his like again.
Good shout! I don't think he got the respect he deserved when he was alive. Simply sublime, he still inspires me in my music. Here's a song I wrote about freedom, I hope you enjoy it. czcams.com/video/hFc-RnEA4wc/video.html
@@subg8858 Yeah he wasn't materialistic was he. Just look at how he dressed. He still inspires me in my music here's a song I wrote about music I hope you enjoy it. czcams.com/video/hFc-RnEA4wc/video.html
I exchanged emails with this fine man back in the autumn of 2000. I was feeling nostalgic (again 🤣, happens a lot) one evening and thought about seeing Richie in concert my freshman year at the U. of Dayton. Me and 4 of my dormitory mates snuck into the U. of Dayton Arena via an exit door and made it to the floor where we actually sat in front of the stage. He and his mates were no farther than 15 feet away. It was great and I told him in my email 30 years later that it was around the same time of year and that I would remember that night forever. He was very kind to write back and he did so promptly that he was glad I had a very happy memory of him.
What a terrific story, I had the pleasure of meeting him briefly at a gig at the Jazz Cafe in London, he very warm and friendly. He so inspires me in my music. Do you play at all? Here's a song a I wrote about freedom. I'd love to know what you think czcams.com/video/hFc-RnEA4wc/video.html
I saw him at the Atlanta Rock Festival in 1970, my husband to be met him at Howard University and he blessed our marriage and went to see him the year my husband died. Made it to the dressing room and spent a wonderful evening with him and Paul Williams. Later I saw him in Alaska and spent another great evening with him. I will forever cherish the memories of him and Paul Williams. The world is lonely without him!!!
I had the pleasure of interviewing him in 1970 for my HS newspaper; he was a wonderful soul and such a peaceful individual. He was kind and respectful to this rather nerdy photographer. RIP Richie; your music is timeless and never sounded better.
@@genesisthepoet815 Wow indeed, he is such a talent and inspires me in my music. Are you a poet - where can read your work? Here's a song I wrote about freedom let me know what you think. czcams.com/video/hFc-RnEA4wc/video.html
i have loved him since i was a kid, putting my mothers record on a kids little green player. Many years later, I had the chance to see him in a small venue Proctors Theatre, Schenectady, NY - the same year my beloved mother passed away. It was an amazing full circle moment.
It has been for only 2 weeks I got to know Ritchie Havens and I must say him playing the guitar is true revelation to me. He has a very authentic way of holding his guitar. Sometimes it is as if he becomes one with his instrument.
He was a really a great interpreter of others songs. But I love his own songs too, ones like Handouts in the rain, The Well and Nobody left to Crown. His music is certainly an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others artists around the world.
Since he was in Brazil, in the early 70s (when I was 14 years old), I started to like HR performances a lot and I have practically everything that was available from his work. I love all and in particular, "San Francisco Bay Blues" live . Unfortunately he was gone and, with him, a person of high spirits and peaceful, a wonderful voice, a special way of tuning the guitar, a special beat on the strings of his GUILD guitar. Thanks to RH. May God keep him, wherever he is.
Richie was a gift from god , his second guitarist doesn’t get the credit for his talent , I think his name is Mike Williams you. See him at Woodstock footage , in any event Richie is immortal to me
Richie has more soul than all the footprints left in the sand You knew for a fact he was authentic and would never use you for a stepping stone as so many cheap performers do
this is what Richie was about, sharing and expressing amazing music which touched him as well as all of us, he lives in our hearts and minds for eternity. One Love Richie, your already missed.
ill never forget the first time my ears heard this man play and sing, i was hooked! Been following him for 15 yrs, had the pleasure to see him play twice and those performances will always be prolific to me, RIP richie!
@Sumaya Aden.... I am terribly sorry, wow! I musta been drinking that night. I mistaken terrific for terrible, as I read it or i wasn't wearing my glasses. I'm so sorry for this mishap.
Wow! This I feel like i was lead here by some Other spiritual force. Thank you for this. So relaxing and better than the one that’s more popular. Love this version . So more moving and intricate
I saw him at the Academy of Music Philadelphia in the 70's then again in San Francisco a few years before he died. Unique, no one like him before or after. He used his feet for a drumbeat, his whole body and soul were music. Incredible !
When i was 15 & 18, i visited s.f., again, & both times i met 'richie havens' or his look-alikes, such happy, friendly, kind souls to me: 1) one worked at 'The Haven,' (the coolest sandwhich shop i have EVER been to, b/c the food was really great & ALL the people having a great time), & we both laughed, b/c i was right at home, & 2) one drove a trolly with his whole body, all the throttles, & astounded me... s.f., always used to be that something was happening there to one's own, very soul.♡
+Chris Campbell Hi Chris, I also saw Richie play live. It was back in 1978, at the Cambridge Folk Festival (UK). I remember he played "Lean on Me" which as I recall, was the highlight of the 2 day festival for me. A great musician.
He was wonderful at Woodstock. He opened and stayed. It was wonderful too. I cried all day when they announced that he had passed away. A Marvelous Special talent.
I saw him playing in a small pub in Ireland and shook his hand afterward. He signed a vinyl sleeve for me: True friends - forever. I listen to his music a lot, love By the Grace of the Sun.
@ Peter Doyle look around right now man. Who's really "got it"? I don't see anybody showing much realness, feeling or depth in music. If they are, there is no spotlight shining on them. As a brother, I'm glad somebody, anybody, posted this video of one talented brother covering another talented brother's music. Let's not oversimplify the race question. How many black people you think are watching this video? By the the way, check the documentary Still Bill about Bill Withers.

Saw Ritchie Havens for first time at 1969 Temple University Homecoming. Couldn’t get tickers to Penn’s Simon & Garfunkel.
I may have never known him.
Now is your time to go and write him in, I shall! This guy is legend and one of the most underrated American folk artists.
Every song he covers is now his own song , love this

One of the very finest right arm in RnR history. Great musician and great man too.
He makes good songs by others a spiritual experience when he does them.
Richie Havens was a juggernaut of rhythm... a unconventional real force of nature. As real and soulful as it even got.
This version is glorious.
I just discovered him today, and am amazed at the way he changes the arrangement and delivery of popular songs... and makes it his own
mee too
i met this man..was the high light of my musical life
