- On December 7, 1987. A lot of talented friends of Harry Chapin. Performed a special tribute in his honor. Enjoy Richie Havens singing harry's classic song "W.O.L.D. Steve and Tom Chapin sing with Richie Havens.

This made my day. The worlds was a better place with Richie and Harry. Shining lights.
Only Richie could pull this off so beautifully. We need both of them back. Badly.
I went to a seminar/lecture one time. The speaker wrote the word "FREEDOM" on the board and asked us what this word makes us think of. Being a bit of a smartass, I yelled out, "Richie Havens." A lady sitting near me turned and smiled. Yeah, this cover is GOLD
Perfect symmetry The deep pathos from the wordsmith master Harry Chapin beautifully executed with passion and conviction that only Richie Havens could deliver a marriage made in heaven where these artisans now reside .
He has such beautiful hands.
Better times better years. I loved harry the pat benatar shooting star tribute was the day i fell in love with her. Todays music just dosent have the same soul
Havens nails this perfectly. just beautiful.
1st song on my Richie Havens playlist.
❤💕❤ love ya buddy. miss you always xxx
Havens is in a class all his own.....
I WAS A guest dj on wfuv on the john platt show-played the strawbs, renaissance, fairport convention....donated $500 and ate pork and beans and eggs after that donation....theyre great people.......
I'm in that awesome part of CZcams again.
Aww damn that's beautiful!
Wow, he really made it his own. Beautiful. Played through all his mistakes like a true artist.
This guy was a class act. Had the honor to shake his hand and thank him for his music.
Me too. The very finest of men.
Another legend giving one of his usual superb performances.
I remember when this first aired. I am delighted to find it here--thank you so much, donald w!. This performance of Richie's is the most beautiful cover out there. No disrespect to Harry, but Richie's voice really conveyed the heartache. R.I.P. Richie Havens.
Even when Ritchie makes a mistake it's gold.
Always loved WOLD by Harry and had only every heard Richie Havens singing "Freedom" from the Woodstock soundtrack. What a beautiful tribute. Hauntingly poignant and a gift to both their memories.
Listen to Havens & Steve Hackett perform "How Can I?" It's stunning. czcams.com/video/YQfg5K9ut2k/video.html
Tom Chapin did a beautiful version of this at the Clearwater Festival this summer, at the memorial to Richie Havens. Aiming for some of Richie, some of Harry.
I really love this... phenomenal..
This is one of the best covers of all time. I've been waiting years for someone to post a video of it.
Great cover but still no one can do it like Harry
@@KJ-nd6jl Ritchie’s is better. All respect to harry, but Ritchie pulls off the haunting, sadness of life on the road. It’s not all adventure. It’s often loneliness, regret, inner-conflict, and sometimes even despair. People get on the road to run from their duties man. This is song is about pure pride, and Ritchie sings it like a prideful man finally being honest with himself. Or maybe it’s the 100th time he’s been honest with himself. Either way, beautiful cover.
@@graysonhoward1562 I have to disagree, the original is much better. You can say what you will about Ritchie Havens experience on the road, and how he expresses it but who wrote the song ? Who are they all there giving tribute to? Harry Chapin! He wrote that because he probably felt those same feelings. I know Haven’ s is probably somebody you like and you’re going to defend him but be real dude, it’s a Cover, he’s doing Harry’s song. It’s Harry’s tribute. The cover doesn’t come close to Harry’s version .
Now, they sing together in Heaven
R.I.P Richie Havens, 4/22/2013
I fully agree! With all the full respect to memory of Harry Chapin: Harry wrote the magnificient story, Richie told it to us. I really love to see Harry's performances in clips (unfortunately not seen any of them live) but Richie's tone just matches here the story : "... You don't have to worry, I'm such a happy man..."
A beautifully haunting version of Harry's song and became my favorite version after the first time I heard it on the Tribute album. It's doubly sad now that Richie's gone as well.
...sits quietly and listens...
One of those songs that has always been in my head. Great cover. But then it is the great Richie Havens 🤗
Love RH's version of this career changing Harry Chapin TUNE!!!!
Wonderful rendition! Harry is smiling down upon us all...
Beautiful nobody could’ve pulled it off better
Richie had his beautiful way with many songs.
Richie.....good old spirit from 60s.....never seen this, thank u for the post
I absolutely love this version I remember seeing it on PBS 30 years ago and always remembered it so glad this post is here thank you
miss you BOTH .....THANKS
They nailed it,!
This is just fantastic. It brought a tear to my eye.
Immenso❤l
This is a great song, performed by a very good story teller. Thank you!
one great spirit that's visible for all to hear and see.
I became a fan of Harry's when I heard Taxi. My first album was Greatest Stories Live. When Harry passed in 1981 it was for me, "the day the music died" (No disrespect to Buddy Holly, but he was before my time). A great rendition by Richie Havens, which really captures the haunting emotions of the song.
Wow! Have been looking for this. Remember seeing the concert on T.V. and this song has haunted me ever since.
Wow
what a great version, saw this on PBS many years ago, been looking for it ever since
I have only heard this Happened, first I have seen any decent video . Thanks Richie
Always love this video!

Never heard this version before, kind of like it.

If Richie Havens covered your song, say bye bye.
haunting sound of Richie Heavens - well, I know it is Havens, but it sounds like Heavens
RIP
Sooo 👍
OMG…….
Sadly I only got to see this great performer once(he always reminded me vocally of Cat Stevens) at the Astoria Finsbury Park in the Tommy Opera with Marsha Hunt and a cast of 100's,does anyone else remember that fantastic occasion ?????
R.I.P.
What a pleasure to discover this! Who are the giuys harmonising? (Apologies for my ignorance)
Steve and Harry Chapin (he wrote this song!)
tom and steven chapin harrys brothers
Does anyone here know what tuning Richie is in and what chords he is using in tat tuning??
It's Open D tuning (DADF#AD).
There is not room here to go into detail but, for example, the opening chord is an Eminor. He is holding down the F# string on the first fret and all the others on the second fret and releasing various strings for variation
Anyone have chord progressions for this version???
Eric Brustad It's the same as in classic Harrys original version, but Richie just put in some of his mystery chords and little bit different rhytm :)

What tuning did Reggie use
