Honda Civic Type R review - the best hot hatch on sale? | Autocar

  • The last Honda Civic Type R was an absolutely fantastic car - it was fast, made a good noise and was great fun to drive.
This new car is slightly different on paper. It’s larger, with a longer wheelbase and a wider track, as well as being nearly 30kg heavier than its predecessor.
However, power is up to 325bhp, thanks to an upgraded version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a lighter flywheel, increased air intake capacity and a freer-flowing exhaust.
All that sounds great on paper, but does it translate onto the tarmac? Join Matt Prior as he tries it on both the road and the track to find out.

Great review and awesome (but very large) hot hatch BUT - It costs more than the new Golf R, nearly £50k. That was RS3 money only a couple years ago. Crazy.
PCP deals are gonna be 5-600 pounds/month. The Type R is not for the average car enthusiast any more. Makes the i30N seem like a bargain.

I think it's a sign that this car is not going to be made in huge numbers and I don't think it will be in production very long. Emissions regs will kill it off so well done to the big H for producing such a car for not a huge amount of return. Much of the body is also new which is done at great cost. In the US, dealers are demanding huge mark-ups so wherever it is sold it will sell out no problem. Who else is going to produce another hot hatch with an ICE and manual gearbox not to mention great steering feel and awesome brakes. It's just not going to happen so it is literally the last of its kind and it's fitting that the last is also the King. When Honda do things well, they stay done well.

    • @madmugen888
      @madmugen888 Před rokem

From a pure performance point of view, Honda barely managed to keep up. Lots talk about the DC2, DC5, EP9, FN2 etc Type Rs, but truthfully at the time the turbo charged competitors were walking all over the Hondas especially from a dig and even for speed and power, as a former DC2 owner I consistently got whipped. What Honda is masterful at is exciting the driver in us, if all you want to win at the lights, don’t get a Type R, if you appreciate driving and feeling the dynamics of a car then Hondas Type Rs are normally at the top of your list. I do hate the dealer inflated pricing like the next guy, from a base price considering the amount of changes and improvements over the base vehicle, the fact the it’s manufactured in Japan and the state of the world’s car manufacturing is in, it expensive but we’ll worth it. In the end, each to their own.

Seems the probably final Honda Civic Type R -- is also the ultimate triumph of the line.
I strongly suspect, not least due to relatively few that shall exist - as emissions rules force Honda to offer only very limited numbers of this Type R for sales in Europe, that this Civic most likely to become a: Classic.
In other words, buying one would be 'good investment' - I mean, this model shall, appreciate in prices.
Even more so, once out of production, and not replaced -- except in indirect fashion, by future EV.
I'm saying, my anticipation is -- this is the final Type R. And ultimately evolves into a valuable possession.

A FWD car that struggles for traction in the wet and can't launch off the line should not even enter the discussion of being the best hot hatch of all time. It's only real strength is it's laptimes around a bone dry track...

@@raidenout1515 I don't know if stomping the shit out of it is THAT accurate a statement. Straight-line sure, but I've tracked both, liked both very much for different reasons. On a tight track the Type R is not far behind. Takes a pretty damn good driver to get the most out of an M2 Comp.
That said, I absolutely agree no car is worth 5-25K over MSRP. Ended up getting the FK8 gen for a good price in 2017, but I'm also open to a newish M2 Comp as a third car after some time with it recently at a BMW Perf. Center...looks like we're after similar driving experiences!

I spec'd one up.. nearly £53k... Nah! I'm good honda, you're being too greedy now.. Everyone, for a moment just think.. say an fn2 type r was what just under 19k back in 2010 now one is worth 3-4k.. that hurts.. imagine owning a civic.. and let's be honest, this is just a cheap ass civic that you paid 46k for and it's now worth 3... 4k because trust me.. one day this will be an old civic worth not a lot! Insane price! I'll stick with my fd2 cheers 👍 another thing to think about is what was your wages like in 2010 compared to now? Are you on more than double what you were on in 2010?! I doubt it! Why should a civic type r be more than double the price?! The civic type r was a car for the people.. now no one can afford one.. genius logic honda 🙄

The new Civic seems to be really really nice - irrespective of variant.
Honda seems have repeated what it did with previous gene.
Namely, base variants uses the same suspension geometry as the R.
Meaning, the base Civic handles every bit as great as the R.
Sure with bit less grip due to less grippy tires, however same handling balance.
Meaning, irrespective which variant person drives, they'll all feel great to drive.

so sorry but, at 55k euro and with only one usable mode(the comfort one), only people with more money than brains will buy it; the gry looks now like an effin bargain. The problem is, I was planning to get an fk8 after this one arrived, counting on the drop in prices due to the new model...but, I can kiss that plan goodbye as the prices of fk8 will stick because of the enormous price increase for the new one.
the funny thing is, Honda is dealing these prices only here in Europe...as the new ctr in the states has less than half of the price increase we experience(37k USD to 44k)...so, I guess they don't really care about EU market. Well, I believe we should return the favour.
