2023 Honda Civic Type-R review. Is this, the last solely petrol-powered Type-R, also the best?

- The new 329bhp Honda Civic Type-R is set to be the last in a long line of petrol engined only Civic Type-R models, thanks to the latest EU CO2 emission regulations. In this video I find out if this FL8 version is a fitting send-off for this legendary hot-hatch.

I genuinely can't recall the last time Harry was so excited while driving a car. That alone is a testiment to how great this thing is.
The GR Yaris
Old hags only appreciate old jags. Just like real riders they think a real motorcycle is only a Harley
What bollocks. The car seems awful.
@@operationgetthugs232 so since you hate this thing nobody is allowed to like it?
He wasn't that excited. He even said that it struggles for traction and the GR Yaris is better.
Love how Harry steps out of a Lotus, into a Honda, and remains objective.
That's the big difference between a journalist and an influencer. Harry is top notch!
The fl5 is being compared to a gt3 by a lot of serious owners, I dare say the lotus isn't much, if any, of an upgrade to the civic 🤷
@@celliott16 lol
@@celliott16 but love this car! And the emira!
@@celliott16 parallels were drawn in a few aspects. but clearly not exactly an apples to.apples comparison.
My dad worked with the people from Honda at Cowley, when they were working out how to put the Honda Legend together. The managers welcomed the workers everyday, and asked the team who were putting it together for their opinion on everything to do with the car. With that attitude, it is no surprise that they get it right.
There's still a lot they got wrong as well, though.. from the factory, anyway. Of course those issues can all be fixed with aftermarket parts but there's some things that should have been done differently, imo.
Happy to see Harry's opinion on the FL5, makes me even more excited for Wednesday when mine arrives!
Get mine on Wednesday too from Grantham.
Jaysus, you paid that money for a type r?! I mean, fair play but still…
Wow congratulations to you two, it's always nice to have a new car smell👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉
Its £13k cheaper than an A45 or an RS3 (And a better car)
Congrats!
I always enjoy your car reviews Harry. I thank you for not spending 15 minutes of the video going through all of the menus and assorted features of the infotainment system like other car reviewers seem to need to do.
It's the only place where the electric cars differ. It's the only thing that reviewers have left to review. I'm exaggerating but not by much, Doug DeMuro's review of the Nissan Ariya... it's a washing machine, it has neither quirks nor features.
@@d33b33 Would disagree, tech is very very important and a differentiator, but there are a lot of other differences in these EVs (maybe even more than commuter ICE cars tbh) but most buyers don't notice and don't care. That doesn't mean the differences are not there.
@@kristisrb Ed Bolean described driving an EV as the event being diminished to doing a chore, like doing the laundry, or vacuum cleaning. I tend to agree, EV's are white goods.
@@kristisrb you're clearly not a car person, engines etc are visceral, something as simple as a manual gear change is pure driving, evs are just transport....nothing more
@@kristisrb when you press the on button on a Wasing machine yes it just goes...fast.......driving is more than just a to b
The interior design, materials, colours and fit are fantastic. The exterior design is mature and sober (save for the shopping cart handle and ridiculous triple exhaust outlets). A Honda in the same line as the original NSX. Well done.
How can you say you like the type r and then not get the wing and exhausts lol 😂😂😂😂
Type-R’s are such great cars. I have owned every model, EK9, EP3, FN2 and currently have the FK2. I couldn’t bring myself to get the FK8 even though it’s a great car. The FL5 looks amazing and am thinking I’ll be in one soon. Seeing Harry have so much fun in an R is great to see. He’s driven the best of the best so the FL5 must be good for him to be so happy to be driving one. 🙏🏽
Ditto (plus all the tegs here too), apart from I couldn't get away with the looks of the fk2 or fk8, bagged an fl5 slot though, can't wait.
The FK2 is still my favourite turbo Type R! I don't think either newer model has moved the game on that much. A lot of the later upgrades like the two-piece brakes or single mass flywheel will bolt straight onto a FK2 as far as I know. ☺
@@TassieLorenzo 💯% I also bought the FK2 because of it’s rarity. 8007 built and sold world wide. In the United Kingdom there are 2250 FK2's sold which are split up as follows: Championship White, 525 cars / Milano red, 469 cars / Crystal Black Pearl, 448 cars / Brilliant Sporty Blue, 411 cars / Polished Metal Metallic, 396 cars.
A future collectors car.
Same here I had a lot of 1.4 1.5 1.6 yeah I can see me dreaming bout this fl5
@J88HNT how would you compare ek9, ep3, fn2? and how would rate your preference of those 3? thx in adv!
Genuine enthusiasm from Harry, a man who has some of the most desirable super cars ever made. The new Honda Type R must be very good!
Great review Harry! I would like to see you revisit the S2000 as we close the pure internal combustion age for Honda. Subscribers: Please reply here if you are willing to let Harry drive your S2000 in the UK. Ideally the car would be mostly in stock form, preserving the original ethos of the car.
He can borrow mine if he wants. :)
@@MuadDib1402 excellent!! I hope Harry reads this.
He can borrow mine, which is 100% stock except from a K&N FIPK. I see his favourite test road from my window the B4437 west of Charlbury - in fact I often see Harry there.
I seem to always have to correct some reviewers on the following. The front bumper side "fake vents" (as they call them), are actually a functional aspect of the aero setup. They are air kickouts, to maintain a laminal flow of air past the front wheel well, rather than sending a turbulent flow that gets sucked into the wheel well. Reason is because they have air rams in the front to pump cool air into the front brake setup, and a vent in the back of the wheel well to let that air out - it maintains a low pressure zone without letting high pressure buildup which leads to front end lift. If they didn't have these side air kickouts the air going around the front bumper would get sucked into the wheel well and interrupt that low pressure flow.
The other point is he claims the rear diffuser isn't functional. That's also incorrect, the bottom of the car is almost complet flatly sealed. In particular the engineers paid attention to the rear diffuser this time around and made it even more functional than the FK8. All the aero on this car is functional, none of it is just for show. That's another thing I love about this latest generation Type-R.
Good info, however painting part of it black does give it a resemblance of a non functional inlet so the misunderstanding isn't surprising.
@@jeremyb4493 It's not like its a standalone item painted black. Its part of the front splitter that flows into that air kickout.
Same goes for the FK8. The vents reviewers claim are fake are actually functional.
@@CerberusTenshi Yeah...while it has some functional pieces, It also has a bunch of fake vents.
@@BigBear-- Granted, some pieces are not functional in terms of aero, but I rather have them as design points, than have the car look like an EQE.
Also, as with the Supra, it's an easy fix to turn those fake vents into real ones. There are plenty of options. From low budget to big budget.
Not my sort of a car but I will watch this anyway because it's Sunday, and it's Harry.
The styling is an improvement. How could it not be? But the black spoiler on the rear gives me vibes of the family car you sometimes see parked outside Halfords
I've watched so many reviews and I truly believe yours is the best. Love the fly by shots to hear the sound and the little bursts you do. Awesome
Surprising you never mentioned the gear change Harry…….regarded as one of the best manual boxes of any car ever
Has Honda ever done a bad one? Even the one in my 1991 Accord was excellent.
Honda have best manual shifters in the World. So nothing strange.
I think ye may be misunderstanding me…..the gear change in this latest Type R is stand out……it is being regarded as of of the best manual changes
Of any car ever built….I’m just surprised it wasn’t mentioned……every other respected car journalist has mentioned it as being one of its most desirable assets
I never mentioned anything about Honda not having nice manual gearbox’s in general…….but this gearbox is described as totally flawless
And BTW…..I love Harry’s vids…… he is a total gentleman, and one of my favourite car gurus…….he is fantastic
@@SHOVEL33 Whatever.
I have just taken delivery of my FL5, after owning two FK8 models. The sum of all the FL5 tweaks, although small, makes a noticeable difference. To say I am loving this iteration of the Type R is an understatement. Such an enjoyable car to drive. Admittedly, the small boy in me liked the crazy look of the FK8, but the adult in me assures me the more refined palette of design choices was the right move by Honda.
The ultimate evolution of the FWD hot hatch which all started in 1976 with just 108hp.
@One Issue Voter True, but the first "hot" front wheel drive Honda, the 1300 Coupe 9 had about 115hp from a to 1.3L air cooled engine which was a very good output for a 60's car.
.
If the first post refers to the Golf GTI, many would argue the case of the Mini Cooper S or Alfa Romeo Alfasud (albeit both cars originally with a boot) as being the first hot hatch.
@@TassieLorenzo The Autobianchi A112 Abarth also has a strong argument to he called the first hot hatch.
@@MrManBuzz Steve probably meant about Golf I GTI which was unveiled in 1976.
@@JeremiBulakowski I know but that's a misnomer. It isn't the first hot hatch. Hell, even the Renault 5 Gordini came out before the Golf GTI did. The Golf was definitely the most successful of the first hot hatches, no denying that, but it wasn't the first.
Very nice! I've got the bog standard Mk11 Civic hybrid and it's brilliant. Great fun to drive and still surprises me with how much power is available pretty much immediately.
Apparently you're hybrid is amazing off the line. Very torguey was very tempted to get it as a family car just out of my price range. Your hybrid will probably be the platform for the next R.
This is the review of the FL5 I’ve been waiting for!
Thanks Harry.
I absolutely enjoy all your videos. This is the one I’ve been waiting for!! 👍
If only it was a few minutes longer 🙏
I'm picking a red one up in two weeks...and can't wait. I know it is expensive....but what isn't these days....and every new model jumps up in price.....! And for something so good and so rare...surely it's worth it!!
my red one should be here within 3 weeks too :)
Thanks Harry. The practically element helped get it passed the gatekeeper 😅 Can’t wait to get mine.
Great video Harry - this car has so much better styling - fair play to Honda for listening to customer feedback! 👏👏👏👏
Holy! Is this real? Harry FINALLY reviews something that isn't British, German, or Italian.
Thanks for another honest review Harry. There really is a lot to like about this car, until you get to the price!
Happy to see Harry's opinion on the FL5
Perfection. Love this car, and in real life probably the only car you’d ever need. I was blown away by how amazing the FK8 was to drive, I can imagine this just perfecting upon it. ❤ 🇯🇵
Great review as always and I loved the comparison to the GR Yaris at the end, high praise.
Lovely to see, always a fab video review, thanks Harry. Keep well.
The color along with the rear end and the wing on this Civic Type-R give me some Alpine A110 vibes. Fun review to watch and the nice little slow motion shot at the end was a nice touch. 👍
Great video as always
Love Hondas. Was one of the first to import an EK9 and DC5. Two of my favourite cars of the 30+ cars I’ve had. Currently got a 2017 NSX NC1 it wears a Honda badge although not strictly Honda as made by Acura in the USA nonetheless it feels Honda.
EK9 ftw max Vtec YO :D
If Harry's having fun, then its worth buying.
One thing I love about Harry's reviews is that despite being someone who's driven the balls of cars in the past and clearly has an appreciation for performance and driving on track. his reviews alway include how the cars can be used in reality/daily life storage, practicality and how they woudl be to live with add to that his experience of communicating and you really feel you have an understanding of the spirit of the car and how it would be to live with as awell as the raw numbers. By far the best car reviews on the internet that I know of.
Great video as per Harry. Be great to see you think what went for a song (and sold expensively) with each of the Silverstone Auctions too
Given how good the standard Civic is, it would be fantastic if Honda reintroduced the Type S as a warm variant at a more accessible price point
YES!!! You finally reviewed it!!! ❤👍
Same response I posted on the older CTR video. The 3 exhausts are actually functional and a clever engineering design that allows the engine to sound good at low speeds, but not drone at high speeds. There's plenty of info online about it. I do like this channel, but this was another stark reminder that Harry is just another car reviewer and by no means any kind of authority to talk on the engineering or technical details of the cars he reviews.
Agreed. Same with the comment on the side vent on the FK8, it was functional. I have an fk8
Harry keeping it real. You have to love him for that. Thanks again!
Brilliant review as always
Great video Harry
That is a huge car, looks bigger than a c class, now way this is a hot hatch, a saloon yes
Your excitement was contagious, in interested in This type R based on your raw emotion of fun alone.
Nice review!
That interior looks nice, first Japanese interior I've been impressed with. Even better it appears to have the perfect balance of screen tech and physical controls. Exterior looks good but the triple exhaust should be an option and a more subtle exhaust as standard.
I remember when the 1995 Volvo 850 T-5R with 240 bhp was the limit front wheel drive could handle, it looks like the engineers will always find a solution.
I really love what they did with the dashboard vents
Thats my favorite looking civic!! That colour looks amazing and the black..
You know it's good when it impresses Harry
Great review Harry. Looks like a worthy upgrade to my Honda Integra.
Glad to hear it Harry!
Glad to see Tedward's comment here as well!
What a final swan song for the ICE TYPE-R, knocked it out the park, love it 😍😍😍
Good to see they've not tried to get rid of all the imperfections, gives the car a bit of character and also means the driver has to think about how to drive round them. Can't believe the power, used to around 240 bhp was seen to be the limit for FWD
Essentially any amount of power can be used with an FWD car, you just can't make use of most of it until you're going fast enough to be in the higher gears.
Mash it in first and you get powdered rubber instead of acceleration.
Love these reviews - please can you do a GR Yaris Vs FL5 comparison?
Nice clear review, like it 🎯
Gotta like the full nutty slow mo to finish off
These things look incredible in 3D….in real life…. on the road. Much better than on tv.
I nearly bought the Type R Civic in 2002 to replace my Accord 1.8 but instead went with a Freelander and am glad I did as my job moved me to an island where fuel costs were greatly increased and four wheel drive was a bonus. I recently got a Rally Red Civic 2019 with the 180hp and I love it and the toys and fuel consumption really surprised me. It is really nimble and a breeze to drive on motorways with adaptive cruise and lane assist where it nearly drives itself. Honda for me going forward as I am really impressed. That car in the blue colour looked really good but it would be red for me if my numbers came up.
He had a constant smile.on his face which shows just how good that car is and how down to earth Harry is too.
Hi Harry, is this the ultimate pocket rocket? Very entertaining as usual. Thanks.
I'm so happy that Honda have now learned how to do a dashboard.
Harry thank you for such an amazing review! I would love it if you could do one in the last fiesta st!!
That exhaust looks comedic.
Glad to see they toned down the styling. Think I'd prefer that much power through the rear wheels, though.
Wouldn't we all! But almost none of the mid-sized "executive" sedans are actually available with a manual transmission anymore. While with the disappearance of the BMW, now literally none of the C-segment hatchbacks have rear wheel drive.
Edit - Where the Genesis G70, rear wheel drive, and Hyundai i30N, front wheel drive, share the same engine, the G70 weighs 150kg more for some reason. You could get a manual in both but the general flavour of the G70 isn't as sporty as the N for whatever reason.
@@TassieLorenzo BMW 240i is
@@ekimandersom4478 True, but that's a coupe. The hatchback and sedan -- the 128ti, M135i xDrive and M235i Gran Coupe xDrive are both front wheel drive based or FWD + a Haldex-style system.
It really is a nice looking civic, saw one yesterday morning on the way to work.
I was waiting for you to get this new tyre r. Have always loved honda and had a lot of honda products over the years. Racing Heritage means a great deal in my book, and this car is the outcome of that . Its nice to see quite alot of people appreciate that. This is what honda is all about. Great review great car!! Special car!!
Very nice Harry. Very nice.
It is great to see nice cars that us normal folks can afford.
If Harry's Garage approves it, it must be a great driving vehicle.
They're paid reviews mate.
@@stevenmcgeorge1983 of course, but they are honest.
Really like the Honda and Yaris. Breaking traction is just part of the character. You can bring in the power progressively to avoid spinning up, but sometimes the scramble for grip adds to the excitement.
Very true!
I had an integra type R in the early 00s. would love to see you get one in a do a review of it
Always have a soft spot for Type R civics. I had an EP3 for 11 years and I abused the heck out of it every day and it never once missed a beat, cost me pennies in maintenance and it was the most fun car I've owned. I still would be tempted to come out of my Tesla Model 3 performance for one of these, if the EV used market has just taken a huge dump
So much excitement even before setting off. This car has to be special
Tremendous review of possibly the last great petrol powered Honda 👍🏻🏴
You wonder why Honda don’t increase production, if the demand is there! Great to see a ‘practical family’ car that focuses on fun, driving engagement and performance. £47k is a lot of dough though
Harry’s smile says he’s still a boy racer at heart.
Good review as usual, great cars presented, many references in their categories. I do regret not seeing a review, in the same fashion as these other hot-hatches, of the Ford Focus RS Mk3 in its stock form. I think, as a proper Ford Performance product, it deserves a say on the channel and be objectively put in the balance with the other players (golf r, civic, gr yaris etc.). I do not know the reasons for not being reviewed but for sure it will complete the channel's reach and coverage of milestone chapters in automotive history. Looking forward to that sir!
I can't see how anyone can claim to be a hot hatch fan and ignore Hyundai at the moment. Just as people say the Civic Type R is what Porsche would build if they made a front wheel drive hatch, I'd argue the i30N is what BMW's M Division would build. Or would have when Albert Biermann was running it, anyway, given it was engineered by the same guy who gave us the E46 M3 and E39 M5
Evening Harry, just saw you on your "Test track" ........in a Rangey ??
Though the spot of a lovely green M3 Touring outside Burford makes me think that's perhaps on its way into the garage soon 👍👍
I was so eagerly awaiting this car to appear on Harry’s channel and I was equally eager on his verdict. I have one on order here in Australia and I don’t care about the 12 month waiting list, as I’m currently driving and FK8 to fill the void until it arrives. I was happy to just get my order in to be honest as production is lower in Australia also. Thanks Harry, absolutely love the channel. (I’m also an EVO reader, it just takes a little longer to arrive , but always worth the wait).
Getting an order in means nothing. Dealers will happily take your deposit and then try to get you into another car. Most people who “have one on order” won’t get one, unfortunately.
Do the math on production and the number of global Honda dealers.
Besides, the Australian pricing is insane. $200K for a Honda?! Come on.
@@Fluterra 72k mate
@@caffeinefix2751 Fixed price too without markups given the agency model in Australia. It is a big increase on the price of the FK8, but oh well.
@@Fluterra I don’t know where you got $200,000 from mate, $72,600 drive away
@@TassieLorenzo you are right, I currently have a 2019 FK8 , I paid $57,000 for it new then. Then the facelift came out they went up to $62,000 drive away.
Great stuff as always, Not watched it yet, but don't need to state that, right on to the video. :)
Styling is on point.
Getting a Championship White one but damn that Boost Blue looks good as well.
I absolutely…ADORE that. The best colour as well. But Harry…..this video highlights something I have said in numerous videos. How many turns lock to lock. I won’t get grumpy and go elsewhere 😂
"How many turns lock to lock." About two turns I think (14:1 on centre, 11.5:1 near full lock, it's a variable ratio rack). The actual maximum steering lock angle is obviously not the forte of a front wheel drive car with very wide front tyres. Many five point turns shall ensue!
Thanks Harry!
Namaste!!!!
Good review. I own a pretty quick sports car. I'm tempted to look at one of these but, I know there will be huge markups.
I would love to see you review a DC2 Type R Harry!
What a motor.....not often I burn with desire to get my hands on a new car and this is one of those times.....
Hot hatches are just getting too expensive these days for the ordinary person
You were polite about the rude look of the previous version. It was a dropped pie of design. Thanks again mate 🙂
this type r is beating supercars on track its wild!
2023 Honda Civic Type R is the best Honda ever made hands down !!!
Hello Harry, brilliant video, as ever.
I am quite disappointed with your council as they have still not repaired that huge pothole on your favourite bend, its been getting worse for, what seems, years
I like how this looks less silly than the last one
I kinda don't understand how it's still front wheel drive at that much cost, but certainly looks fun
I think the interior is the standout feature with this new Type-R
Pleasure to watch you giving it the full beans 11:57
Great looking car Harry 👌
Scary price though💰💰💰
Great review 👍
its beating cars over $150k
Brilliant video Harry 👍 You’ve done the Yaris, now the Type R, any chance of reviewing the facelift Hyundai I30N ?
Driving the absolute hot hatch in a Patek, fabulous dichotomy.
??? and your point is what?
@Jonathan White I was remarking at the contrast of a simple, elegant timepiece from one of Holy trinity versus the modern Japanese Civic in its lessened, yet boisterous appearance.
Excellent car! Really like the standard Civic as well, pity you dont see them much in the EU
I love this new type r, wasn’t a huge fan of the looks of the last one but this one is a home run
Such a beautiful looking car and that colour is gorgeous, so much better than the previous model
The first light up on the country lane.. Yep, Harry can drive!
I'd have waited for this but only 2 rear seats and got 3 kids! And at 50k... got hyundai i20N as half price and 5 years warranty. And near 400kgs lighter. Like the late 70s, hot hatch is the answer!
It is a great vehicle.. I was in a blue one and I was surprised at how much I liked the colour..
The engine is a gem, the chassis feels so secure.. Reliable Honda made in Japan..
If you have the money just go and get one.. It's worth it.
You can try - all sold out and long waiting lists. Pay a premium for a del miles one your only option (in the UK anyway)
