Over the past few years of travel around New Zealand we’ve discussed penguins in a vlog or two (or three), we’ve been to the right spots, shown up at the right time, waited, been patient and still never spotted penguins in the wild. So when we had a wedding in Hawkes Bay we checked out some of the best things to do in Napier and came across the Little Penguin Close Encounter at the National Aquarium of New Zealand and knew we had to check it out!
First up is Chambourcin Cottage, an ahhhmazing escape nestled out in the vines! Other than the minimal but homely feel we loved the location to a handful of vineyards in the area - you’ll see in the next vlog we jump on the included bikes and spend the day cruising around drinking wine! Then it was all about the close up encounter with the penguins, feeding them and observing them hanging out. It’s amazing to see the behind the work being done behind the scenes to take car of the little guys, rescuing them and helping them recover in all sorts of ways. Trying to get caught up with videos as life has been so hectic. Oh my goodness, that cottage was all kinds of beautiful! The bathroom was stunning, I really like the floors (surprisingly!) and really liked the amount of natural wood in the place. A great find from you both! Thoroughly enjoyed watching the tour around the penguin rehabilitation centre - when you first put the price up, I thought it was a bit on the expensive side, but you guys got such a personal and hands on experience, and of course I'm sure a lot of that money goes into keeping the birds healthy and alive.
We wondered where you've been 😊 Hope life has been good hectic! We so appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment, we always look forward to them. It was amazing, and that wasn't a special tour for us, that's exactly how it is for everyone. As soon as you see their little faces, it's worth it!

In German we do not distinguish between turtles and tortoises, we just use the same word for all of them and the turtle/tortoises thing therefore confuses me so much because I can't even translate it in my head to different words to remember which one is which😂 I think we only call them water turtle and land turtle but like both are turtles to me😂 (Same with monkey and ape btw, we just use the same word for both)😂

It's AMAZING! You can just feel that everyone is grateful... travellers are grateful to be on the road, hospitality owners are happy to be open and tour operators are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
