  • I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Loam Pox, the Eternal Weekend deck selected by Patreon subscriber Thomas from the Austrian Legacy League. Loam Pox is a BoshNRoll favorite and Thomas actually registered it for real at Eternal Weekend Prague! As always, Smallpox is here to squeeze everyone's resources and Life From The Loam breaks parity with Urza's Saga and tech lands. This build passes on Dark Ritual and leans into Mox Diamond for more stability over explosivity. Does The Pox Life favor stability over big turn 1s? We'll find out soon! The Austrian Sickness is upon us! MTG

    @BoshNRoll Thank you for playing this league.
    The choice of no dark rituals and 2 dismember was made because i felt that was better against UB scam. They tend to either leave you stranded with acceleration and no payoff or just counter a turbo liliana. The dismembers were meant to answer trolls with a second creature on the board.
    I ran into scam 3 times in the first 6 rounds and it felt close every time. Still lost two matches tough.
    Keep up the good content ❤

    I registered Loam Pox not at this last Eternal Weekend, but the prior one. I didn't own Delver or anything that could hold its own so I went ahead with the fun deck. Playing it at EW was a bit of a nightmare, though. I feel like the deck really preys on people who make mistakes or are unfamiliar with the deck, which is just not the case at EW. My win rate was considerably lower than at my local shop.
    I did have a pretty funny match, though, committing absolute crimes against storm, especially since my build was high on Ashioks at the time. At one point I had a Pithing Needle on Mishra's Bauble just because I already had everything else so thoroughly locked down. Turns out I channeled my inner BoshNRoll by registering Loam Pox: I dodged going winless by beating storm 🙃

    46:40 feel like it's better to give up the Grist to kill the flipped delver here. Grist dies the next turn either way and getting one off the board means you only need to find 1 answer. If the other delver flips then you the insects can't block anyways.

    It's pretty inconsequential, but n Round 2, Game 2 vs Depths, wouldn't it make more sense to minus Ashiok targeting yourself? You could potentially mill over a Loam + more lands to Loam back, whereas milling your opponent doesn't really do anything. (Note that Ashiok's ability _mills_ the player you target, but it always _exiles_ your opponents' graveyards, even if you target yourself.) Granted, milling a Loam wouldn't have turned out to be relevant in the actual game, but you never know!

    Hey Bosh, I know it's late and you probably won't see this but anyone else might be able to help: Earlier in the week you mentioned a rules change specifically with Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and how if you blow up the first one after the second land played they DON'T get to play a third. Can you, or someone else, link this rules change and explain how it might affect other cards like Muldrotha, The Gravetide??? Thanks in advance to anyone who might answer!!

    • @anaphysik
      @anaphysik Před 6 měsíci +2

      Current rules:
      "305.2. A player can normally play one land during their turn; however, continuous effects may increase this number.
      305.2a To determine whether a player can play a land, compare the number of lands the player can play this turn with the number of lands they have already played this turn (including lands played as special actions and lands played during the resolution of spells and abilities). If the number of lands the player can play is greater, the play is legal.
      305.2b A player can’t play a land, for any reason, if the number of lands the player can play this turn is equal to or less than the number of lands they have already played this turn. Ignore any part of an effect that instructs a player to do so."
      You no longer "spend"/"gain" available land drops; instead you have a limit that is checked against. So e.g. when the first Dryad is in play, your limit is two-lands-played. If that Dryad is killed in response to the casting of a second Dryad, then when that one resolves your limit is again two-lands-played (with a brief window where it was only the normal one-land-played). (This is most notable for the legendary Azusa -- you can no longer just play a 'fresh' Azusa to get two more land drops.)
      You might be playing Muldrotha wrong if you're wondering how this affects her. (It *can* be relevant to her, but usually isn't.) Muldrotha *doesn't* give you an additional land drop; she just changes where you can play a land from (much like Crucible of Worlds/Ramunap Excavator). ("You must follow the normal timing permissions and restrictions of the cards you play from your graveyard. For example, you can't use Muldrotha to play a land if you don't have an available land play"). However, if your land-drop-limit happens to be higher than 1 due to OTHER cards *anyway,* then each instance of Muldrotha (say, by sacrificing her and then replaying her from command zone) would let you select a graveyard-land to play for those land drops. ("If you play a card from your graveyard and then have a new Muldrotha come under your control in the same turn, you may play another land or spell of that type from your graveyard that turn.") (Muldrotha grants you permission to do a thing, not a restriction.) But no number of Muldrothas will provide that needed higher-land-drop-limit on their own.
      --
      For an unrelated cross-game comparison that this reminded me of: under the current rules of Arkham Horror LCG, bonus actions *are* spent/earned like how bonus land drops used to be in Magic.

      @BoshNRoll  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Rule 305.2a
      yawgatog.com/resources/magic-rules/#R305
      Basically it says that the total lands you’ve played in a turn is always compared to how many lands you are allowed to play right now. That count is not connected to any specific permanent.
      You can’t play an extra land with Dryad, bounce and replay the dryad, then play another land with it because the game still sees you’ve played 2 lands and are allowed 2 total drops.

    Would have been interested in learning why the deck runs one of 4 different lands?
    Is it just spreading utility, are none of them theoretically better more often. I'm pretty sure I know that none of those cards tutor lands.

    • @dashvash5440
      @dashvash5440 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @christianroot6287 thanks, I've seen people play loam. I was just wondering if any of the lands were possibly stronger than one of the others. Loam doesn't tutor right? I've seen it recur strip mine but not find it.
      I guess the effects of the single lands are just niche and sort of Icing on top. Little surprised one doesn't outshine another in certain metas.
      Thanks

    • @beyond7hecurve
      @beyond7hecurve Před 6 měsíci +2

      Gq = 5th wasteland, boseiju is a 2-off in the 75, the other two are marginal over swamps (pit vs delver, takenuma vs grind).
      The deck often plays long games naturally drawing lots of cards, so techy 1-offs can make some sense.
      This is also (roughly) the package loam pox has been playing for a while now, meaning the real answer is probably more like: "because it works in practice"

    • @dashvash5440
      @dashvash5440 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @beyond7hecurve ah, that does make sense. I haven't played in ages, and loam didn't exist. I am getting back into playing a bit, and, I think, I've seen quite a few decks running several one of lands.
      Anyways, thanks for the explanation. When looking at the deck, it really jumped out at me.
