  • I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Cascade Rhino Beans Control, a hybrid brew challenge from Patreon subscriber SomethingSnazzy. I have played Cascade Rhinos on the channel. I have played Cascade Up The Beanstalk on the channel. Today they are one. This deck channels the Jund value decks of old and has multiple different things you can hit off a cascade. Rather than being built with a specific outcome in mind, we're just better that whatever we hit will move the game forward in a positive way. Beans and rhinos, they both come in cans! MTG

    Patreon subscriber Vlandrik here, been working on this same idea at my LGS legacy nights. Currently working with a 2/2 beans split main/side. This has been my pet deck for a while and the beans side plan has helped it a ton.
    Also I refer to the deck as CrashCade EleLentels.

    Highly entertaining, love it when you try something that might not make sense, even if hte conclusion is just what you expected. So rarely I see a mistake that you don't call out yourself during or shortly thereafter, I can't help but share: At 52 minutes, your Fury put three damage on an insectile aberration and one on a bowmaster, leaving their 1/1 orc army alive, instead of the correct 2 on delver and 1 on each of bowmaster and its army.

    This deck makes me excited to cascade and appeals to my inner gambler. I love it and I'm happy to see that it actually seems decent.
    I suspect it's often correct to sideboard into only rhinos or mostly beans, depending on the matchup (and possibly what the opponent saw in game 1). I thought that match 1 would be one where you really want to guarantee that you cascade into rhinos because they grant you immediate value and the games are short, but you lost the game that you got rhinos and won the game where you just free spell con q̶u̶e̶s̶o̶ frijoles-ed your way to victory, so maybe I don't know how to play magic.
    As other have mentioned, casting omnath when you can play a fetch afterwards is typically free.

    Always a pleasure to appear in one of these getting absolutely manhandled ✌
    Edit: Flame of Anor is a very good charm, I don't think the card needs to be a command to be worth the inclusion. Kills the endurance, hits some annoying artifacts like chalice or anything from the dozen artifact decks around, and is always an instant speed divination if you've got nothing better to do. That said, I don't think it's ultimately worth it, 3 mana is just too much for the daze wasteland deck

    at 34:30 i think it`s better to play omnath, play the fetych and sorcery speed the soiltude, even if u give up intel. Also at 40:35 i think you are in a winning position if u pitch yorion for solitude on one of the crabs and bind the other, they have no cards in hand, no engine without the crabs and u are pushing 8 damage a turn.

  • @Korwinga

    I wonder if there's a build of this that can pivot between tempo and control by having either rhinos or beanstalks in the sideboard (probably beans, I would think) and then swapping the rhinos with the beanstalks when the matchup makes sense. The uncertainty of having both in at the same time was a little bit rough.

    @BoshNRoll : based on your ample top-level competitive playing experience, how much do you think the appeal of this kind of "box of chocolates" deck can change based on the structure of a competition?
    What I mean is, let's say for the sake of argument that this hybrid Beans-Rhinos deck is equally powerful to a dedicated 5C Beanstalk or Rhinos deck, but just has higher variance. In other words, the overall win percentage is the same, but the hybrid version is more likely to overperform and win bad matchups, but also more likely to underperform and lose favorable ones. (We witnessed it doing both in this video!). Are there some competitive situations where this variance is actually desirable? For example, does it make more sense to play a high-variance list when trophy-hunting in MTGO Leagues, since you need to hit a lucky streak to 5-0 anyways, so you'd rather play a deck that oscillates between 5-0 and 0-5 results than a deck that racks up 3-2's and 4-1's? Would you be more hesitant to play a deck like this in a 14-round Swiss-System tournament, where consistent performance is more important... or could it maybe be the opposite if you're in it to win it? (You need a deck that can get you to 12 wins in the Swiss, PLUS 3 straight wins in the Top 8, so a "merely" consistent deck may be less valuable when an 8-6 record gets you no closer to your goal than 0-2-drop? I've never played in a constructed tournament, so I'm curious what your experience tells you!
    Of course, you made it clear in the video that this hybrid deck is probably BOTH weaker and less consistent than a more focused version. And I suppose there's also an element of personal preference here - the stereotype of competitive "Spikes" is that they tend to prefer consistency over variance in their decks, especially grizzled control players such as yourself! Still, we've seen even the "spikiest" of players embrace high-variance cards and decks when they offered enough power to win tournaments! (e.g. Comet, Name Sticker Goblin, Winota, Charbelcher, Frenetic Efreet, Bazaar of Baghdad - come to think of it, arguably the entire Vintage format...)

  • @XboxTheBeatboxer
    @XboxTheBeatboxer Před 7 měsíci +1

    I think you should start the list with how you want to play- aggressive (Rhinos main) or controlling (Beans Main). And then juke. I would consider adding Verdicts (at least 2-3). Possibly start with all 4x Fury main or if you want to go controlling, some Verdict main. It would be nice to be able to cascade into grave hate just like you can cascade into Artifact hate with Ouphe, though I don't know how effective the one-of Ouphe is in the matches where you really need it.

    • @lightworker2956
      @lightworker2956 Před 6 měsíci

      I mean, that sounds good in theory, but I think in practice the enemy player won't mis-sideboard or misplay that badly if you juke like that. Because the same enemy cards are roughly speaking good against a Rhino value pile and a Beans value pile.
      I think jukes have value if you go from zero creatures to several creatures, or go from several creatures to zero creatures, or if you sideboard into an unbeatable lategame vs a slow deck, or siding from a graveyard strategy to a non-graveyard strategy, or something like that. I don't think siding from one creature-based value pile into another creature-based value pile is that amazing of a juke. And you can't really afford to side out all the creatures here, if you also want to have some sideboard cards vs combo etc.

    • @XboxTheBeatboxer
      @XboxTheBeatboxer Před 6 měsíci

      @@lightworker2956 It's not a juke. It's a philosophy on how you want to play the deck. You start aligned with a decision on if being aggressive or not is best against most decks in the meta. You then alter the strategy for the matchups where that assertion isn't true. You're not tricking your opponent. You're playing the best version of the deck games 2-3.
