Director already stated it’s a different version of the Necronomicon but in the same world. More than one book tied to hell can exist within the pact of a demon.
Thank you! Yeah, this wasn’t explained well within the film (besides one throwaway line) and going in blind I didn't realise.
I appreciate everyone correcting me and giving me that info. This sometimes happens with reactionary reviews.
Edit: I believe they touch on it in Army of Darkness, but this book in Rise looks different from any of the three shown in Army of Darkness.
I have a patreon video that is FULL SPOILERS which goes in-depth with this and other parts of the film.
I personally own quite a few versions of the Necronomicon, so this checks out. 😅
They always do these changes' when it comes to a big well known franchise doing a different version of something. It's just for making money for selling toys or models or in this case a new Necronomicon book to get people to buy it just because it's different for collector's. Sometimes it's because they haven't got the licence to make them look the same why they have to make changes.
Yea. I caught within the film that there are 3 different versions of the Necronomicon in that world.
@@spookyastronauts they said there's 3 books in this universe, the original, the 2013 one and now this
Great to see someone else who appreciates the 2013 masterpiece.
I love the franchise. I love Bruce. I love 2013. I got some shit for that back in 2013, but like the arm rip to chainsaw is exactly what I wanted.
2013 is excellent l!
Evil dead 2013 was much better I thought
The opening title card was so good, and the sound design was incredible. Cheese grater scene wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but this movie was so much fun.
The opening title card was really great! And I agree, I keep hearing people reference the cheese grater scene and it was probably one of the least horrific moments
Yes! The trailer made my brain recoil hardcore to that thought, but def wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been
I agree. Must say that a lot of gory scenes in Rise were rather quick and not as horrifically drawn out like the 2013 one.
Like the braid from the opening scene was ripped off without much drama or horror (and the same goes for the cheese grater and basically every other gory moment). It was quick and it was shocking, but having that build up and anticipation would have been appreciated.
@Nexils completely agree
I lol'd at that & completely lost my sh&t at the eyeball. No one else was laughing in the theater though, so... Whoops
I really don’t understand how this could have been too much for some people, that they walked out. The 2013 Evil Dead is far more gory, and visceral.
I’m pretty sure Lee Cronin said that there are three books, all shown in army of darkness. One being from the first two evil dead films, one from the 2013 version, and now the one in evil dead rise. Either way I know I’m probably gonna love this film! I hope I get a big audience when I see it.
Thanks! Some other people have said this, it doesn’t make a huge amount of sense since the book has the exact same name. It’s not “the books of the dead”. And the first two look so similar… it would have been cool if they included a line or two about it, which they didn’t. Kinda weak to rely on an interview to explain that. But I appreciate the info
Not that this is Evil Dead cannon, but a lot of the lore comes from Lovecraft, and in the Cthulhu mythos there are various different translations and versions of the Necronomicon.
@@spookyastronauts - Perhaps it could be considered analogous to the bible. There's a lot of different versions, but it's always called "the bible".
just to add to this, the 3 books in Army of darkness all look the same. this one looks different it doesnt have the face.
This quote has been taken a little too literally/out of context. Cronin mentioned taking one of the books in a metaphorical way when pitching it to Raimi, like it was the passing of the torch.
EDIT: Yes, it is mentioned in Rise that the priest believes that book is one of 3 volumes, but for now I take that more as an allusion/reference to Army of Darkness than that literally being one of the other books on the table. It'd be nice if they explored the connections between universes in the sequel/s but for now I don't think it's meant to be the official canon.
One thing I will say, is all 3 of the "first" entries in each universe, 1981, 2013 and now Rise, the book is referred to as the Naturom Demonto. I'm aware that the name was only changed in Evil Dead 2 because of the rights, but I'm curious as to why they keep going back to the Naturom Demonto.
I liked 2013 much more, honestly. I did like the homages to The Shining and Society, but this movie was fine. I didn't think it was scary. It was expected for an Evil Dead movie.
I am looking forward to Beau Is Afraid next week.
I watched it last night thanks to an advanced screening in Bangkok. It's really one of the goriest films in a long time, but story-wise, it couldn't beat 2013's version. I wasn't 100% sold on the relationships in Evil Dead Rise. Mia has my heart and soul, so I really wish we could've seen more of her in future Evil Dead films.
Agreed! I’d love to see a sequel with an experienced Mia
I loved her reaction when she got back in the car; same exact way I feel after a good horror movie!
🥰🥰🥰
I really enjoyed that they bought the isolation out of the woods into the city so to speak - I’m glad that feel was kept within the apartment
When it was first announced i honestly wasn't excited but once i saw the trailer i got so hyped to see it so i'm seeing it on saturday and i'm very excited
Exact same! Seeing it for my bday! Excited!!
@@deaditeera Cool 😊
I haven't seen yet, but, regarding the lore, the director did say Evil Dead Rise used the fact that there were 3 Necronomicons from Army of Darkness and the EDR book is different than the book from the original movies (The remake/reboot is a different book). Does this help with your issues with the lore? Either way, I'm absolutely stoked!
Yeah it kind of does but it’s not explained at all in the film! And it’s still referred to as “THE book of the dead” .. I wish they had put in a throw away line about how it was part of a series
@spookyastronauts yeah it always annoys me when the director has to explain it instead the movie:p if you're gonna add new lore, talk about it in the film!
I’m hyped as hell for this movie. Going on my birthday on Friday. Good to see it was rated R18
I going for my birthday too!!
Kool...Happy Belated 420..as well..💨💨💨🤗💯
Happy early birthday
Happy birthday

I'm pretty sure this is going to be the most brutal horror film of 2023! It opens on April 21 here in the states. I'll be seeing it a week later on the 28th🤘🤘👏👏🔥🔥
Upon my first watch and revisiting this review, you were very dead on about my feelings for this movie. My expectations should have been adjusted and I think I had way too much hype for it. Some of the dialogue was unintentionally funny and some of the kills felt so random and over the top to the point of taking me out. I know Evil dead is supposed to be funny but I felt like this was marketed much more like 2013 version which was unrelenting and super intense. This one felt goofy at times and a bit like it was trying too hard to shock people and make random scenes connect. I had to suspend disbelief far too much to keep watching when 2013 did a good job of making all the kills and scenes feel intentional.
I am super pumped for this movie. I'm seeing it this weekend. Just to clarify, some of the timeline stuff though. All evil deads take place in the same universe a few months ago, the director talked about that. Basically in the army of darkness there are three necronomicons and how they're making this work in the same universe is Ash has one. The 2013 one is a different necronomicon and this One has the last necronomicon so all in the same universe, but there are three separate books all with their own flavors.
Thank you.someone else said something similar, shame this was said outside of the films not within them to explain this to the viewer. I guess the different books has different rules. If the first 2 are different why do they look so similar just updated, and have the same name…
So excited to watching this movie and Beau is Afraid ✨️🙌🏻✨️these two movies are in my must watch list.
The Title Card shot was really great and pretty powerful.... the rest fairly dumb & predictably uninspired and lazy. I'm sorry, but I just don't get how this is seeminly so exceptional and satisfying to most. I really did want to love this. It's more just how alot of modern movies tend to look and feel, quick cut editing, sound & gore effects you've seen a hundred times before. Anytime they begin to show an interesting idea or action they immediately cut or edit around it, pacing & tone just kinda falls into default like all the movies that feel like all the other movies, instead of a unique and genuine experience. It really feels like they work harder to make it somewhat extreme & scary for casual horror fans but not too scary or intense. All that blood doesn't do shit if there's no real weight & tension behind it. I should've gone to Beau Is Afraid tonight instead of tomorrow, as I'm sure that will be the one to stick to my soul for a long time. I'll watch EDR again at some point, maybe it'll work for me on a different night as that does happen with certain films off and on, as for right now I just didn't get what most seemed to have from this one.
It sounds like you rated it perfectly. All gore and not alot of plot or story isn't usually my favorite kind of horror movie. I will definitely see it as soon as it streams. Thanks Emma ❤❤❤
I mean, that’s an evil dead movie. We don’t love it for the plot or story.
🗣️👏🏼Please see pinned comment
I'm really glad I saw this review! Most of the reviewers loved it but I thought it really lacked depth, was gross for gross sake, and the themes all didn't land.
i adore this movie.
a detail i forgot about, while watching,
but read about later -
bruce campbell said that all the evil dead movies (incl 2013) take place in the same universe.
the 2013 movie is at the same cabin; ash's car is still there, plus he has that appearance post credits.
and in regards to the necronomicon -
he points out that army of darkness established that there are at actually three books.
and the book in this movie has teeth,
as did one of the books back in army of darkness.
also, and many people probably already know this -
bruce campbell is vocally in 'rise', as ash (we hear when the boy is listening to the tape),
in which he tries to warn the priests not to read the book.
now, of course,
when we look at the franchise as a whole (incl. the tv show),
there are constant narrative inconsistencies and plot holes.
i find it part of the charm of the whole thing.
mark twain once said -
"never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
i feel, collectively,
the artists, involved in this franchise having taken that approach, regarding canon.
and that was established, from the beginning, by raimi, campbell, & tapert.
I’m so stoked for this movie
Just came out of the avant premiere in Santiago. It was just crazy. It might be the most intense and gory movie I've seen in a theater. Not only that, but it is clearly different from every other Evil Dead movie... but as you said: it delivers. I loved it and I know every fan will too.
I'm going this Saturday to see this. I can't wait, I've been counting down the days . So excited
The isolation aspect was the only letdown for me, especially since I was thinking it would be like 50 stories high of deadites or something
Yes!!!! Same!!
I've come to really appreciate and respect your opinions and horror takes.
Thank you
Jaspers Emma! It's coming here to Tbilisi Thursday. I'm going in! It sounds like riding the Wild Mouse roller coaster at Coney Island when it was all made of old wood, no lights, at night. Frightening at hell. I'm ready!
Going to see this Friday and I couldn't be more excited! Clicked on the review so fast!
So nice to hear an Australian review, especially considering the high Australian input in this film!
I’m seeing it tomorrow and can’t wait. Seeing it again at the weekend with my mother who’s a fellow horror fan and a friend who doesn’t like horror and gore, but really wants to come. 😂 The second viewing should be interesting. I don’t think our friend will see much of the film through her fingers.
Emma, you have never made me want to see a movie more.
I am sooo excited for this movie!! Let me tell you I clicked so fast😂
Just got back from the theater seeing it - absolutely loved it definitely relentless brilliance. You mentioned in your spoiler free review that it alters the lore of the franchise. But in one of the scenes when they played the record of the priests account they stated they had one of three known copies of the Necronomicom. This could explain the slight deviation. Still definitely a great movie..I'd gladly welcome a sequel..would love to see where they go with it. Btw, just have to say I absolutley love your passion for horror movies - your CZcams channel simply awesome. Question, did you have the trailer for A24's "Talk to Me?" If so, any thoughts?
I had the biggest smile on my face towards the end, absolutely loved it!
I got my tickets for this Sunday. Very much. Looking forward to this.
Also, I watched The Feast this weekend, and I don’t even have words to describe how I felt after watching that.
Film was shot during Covid-19 peak in NZ - hence the isolated feeling
I have a conspiracy theory that most remake scripts are adapted from original scripts that production companies feel wouldn't make money on their own. So they pepper in some references to a movie they can remake. I feel like when a remake is good, it's so satisfying and nostalgic 😭 But that happens so infrequently!!
This movie was pretty silly. Great call backs to the other films though. The Shining reference was pretty cool.... kind of? Unlike Evil Dead 2013, it had no real story, I felt nothing for the characters and the gore was all CGI so it didn't make me cringe at all. The coolest part of this movie was their apartment. In the end, we enjoyed some good laughs and had fun but I can't say we were scared for a single second 🤷♀
Okay, so I see someone else has mentioned there are multiple books, but I feel I should go into more detail just because.
So, outside of the film, Lee Cronin has stated multiple times that that ALL films are in the same universe (though for various reasons, that's impossible), and that the key to connecting them were the three books in Army of Darkness. He says the books have different personalities, and that we've seen one in Sam's films, Fede's film, and now this film.
Inside the movie, one of the priests on the vinyls mentioned that this book is one of three volumes of the Naturom Demonto.
Now... There are a couple reasons why I don't buy it, and they all surround Fede's comments on his film. And, to put it simply, Fede says that the cabin and book in his film is the same as in the original. And ONLY the original. Fede has a bit of a misunderstanding about Evil Dead 2's recap sequence in which he thinks the whole film is a remake and as such isn't canon to the original. So when he made the film, he stuck to the original intended ending of the first film in which Ash died. And because his film takes places years and years later, it gives plenty of time for not only the Delta to rust over (though it's the same exact Delta), but also for the cabin to change slightly, the shed to shange location entirely, and the book to be reskinned. Of course the pages look different, but whatever. So while I take issue with Fede's comments abour Evil Dead 2, his comments on his film have to be taken at face value, because it's his film.
Also, Ash vs Evil Dead solidifies the fact that it cannot exist within the aame universe by having the cabin be the exact same as in Evil Dead 2 bullet holes and all, and the book having the same or similar design as well. Though it's also worth noting that the books in Army of Darkness, while having the faces, look nothing like the book as seen in any of the trilogy. Which means that the books can likely change appearance themselves, as well as be reskinned by other people as Fede suggests. Ash Vs Evil Dead also shows several clips from the first two films and references the events of both films directly, including the different places Ash found the book in both films.
So, basically, there are two timelines prior to this film. 1. The trilogy and the show. 2. The original film and the 2013 "remake" (I put it in quotations because it's not really a remake so much as it is a distant sequel). This film, from what I can gather, can fit in both rather well, as it has a completely different book found by a different person (the priest instead of Raymond Knowby) and is in a completely different location. But it's worth reiterating that the book in the 2013 film is the same as in the original.
Also, Bruce Campbell has an audio cameo as the voice of one of the priests on the vinyls and Lee said that because Ash has traveled through time before, that that priest could be technically be Ash. Possibly while on his journey to get back to his own time as seen in the comics.
Hope this information and speculation on this film's placement in the canon helps. This is something I have been obsessing over since I started getting back into Evil Dead and trying to figure out the timeline. Lee's and Fede's statements have only made it more confusing, but I've tried to explain the best I can without my brain exploding.
Curious to hear your take on Beau Is Afraid. I’m still trying to make sense of it days later
This review makes me so happy. I'm going next weekend. 🖤
in the movie they say there are three books so that’s why this one is different but it’s a quick part. i think they’re setting up a sequel as well with that
My partner and I are going to see it this weekend. I'm into horror more than he is, but he saw the Evil Dead remake in theaters and he said it was a wild experience and would do it again. Thanks for the spoiler free review!
I think what is tripping people up about the timeline is that they don’t realize that the og, 2013 and rise are all different books but it’s been confirmed that it is all within the same canon.
Many people have mentioned this. But it’s not explained at all and EVERY book is called THE book of the dead. Would have been good if they explained this, even if they had a throw away line about how it’s “just part of a series of books”. People avoiding spoilers before seeing the film aren’t going to read director comments before watching. I’ve pinned someone’s comment who says the same thjng
Thank you for the review. This helps my expectations. Thank you!
I was excited before and now I'm BEYOND excited!!! Idk how I'm gonna wait 3 more days
I like how different your tastes are from your husband. Going with you to this movie, now that's love!
So fun fact about the Necronomicon situation! There are three volumes of the Necronomicon, and those are, according to Sam Raimi and Lee Cronin, the Ash Necro, The 2013 Necro, and the Evil Dead Rise one.
More expanded in in Ash vs Evil Dead, but yeah! These technically all could overlap with eachother which makes me extremely happy.
Great job on the review, Emma, and kudos to Dean for going along. I know I'm going to have to wait and see "Evil Dead Rise" on rental, like I did for the 2013 remake. It's just easier for me to handle the gore. I have seen "Renfield" and I look forward to hearing your review whenever you get to it.
Excited to see it Saturday!!
honestly regarding the "isolated" la, location, if this is in the same universe as AvED, it makes sense that it's like that, since a big part of the world got destroyed, it makes sense that LA would have this post-apocalyptic vibe
Dang I have tickets for this on Friday with my 11 year old. She loves horror and watches almost everything with me but I always look up the guides before to determine wether I'll allow it. She hasn't seen any of the Terrifiers and idk if I'll take her since you compared it to that in the violent gore aspect
This makes me happy to hear you support your daughters love for horror the same way my parents did! Make your best choice there are plenty other movies im sure shed love
I'm also all in for supporting your kid's love for horror, but as the movie is described here as the most brutal you can see in the cinemas, I definitely wouldn't watch it with a 11year old! maybe wait at least till she is 13 or 14 years old (it's still very young, but I think every kid is different in their development)
I don’t think so it’s R18 in my country, but you’re the parent and you know what’s best.
Ok I can't live without your reviews now, cheers 😂😂
It's out here in Dublin on Friday, can't wait!
Thanks for the review. Can't wait to see this. Dubbed in French in my area lol . The great thing about it is that there's not gonna be any problems with accent 😅
THE LA THING! We saw this yesterday and it was 10/10 experience, the only thing bothering me was why place it in LA when it looks NOTHING like it, kept pulling me out of the story every time they mentioned it 😭
Yeah why bother having it in such an iconic location instead of where it was actually shot
I saw it at the Overlook Film Fest. And wow! It’s amazing.
Seeing this with my date Friday. It's our first. We have a mutual love for the original, so I hope this one brings us together. Core memory, maybe?
At least a gore memory… hehe
Awesome! We have tickets for this Thursday! Looking forward to it!
Can't wait - seeing Beau is Afraid and Evil Dead Rise together on Anzac Day at Dendy in Newtown! Hope I enjoy them as much as you did! Stay safe!
I feel the same exact way! I am so excited to get to see my favorite movie series in the world, got not only a F-$’en kick ass remake BUT from what I’m hearing,Reading and seeing it at one of the very last Drive-In’s that is Just around the corner from where my house is in Indianapolis, Indiana!!! Also I love watching you get all excited about not only seeing it in your theater but showing off your Theater going to see the movie!!!! “How Cool Is That! Lov ya Girlfriend and QUOTE:( MOMMY’s WITH THE MAGGOT’s) UNQUOTE: !!!!
It was a fun watch. 6/10 … but the 2013 one.. TOP 3 favorite horror movies of mine.. masterpiece. I hope they make a 3th one and go back to the woods 🫶🏼 btw great review
i dunno from what i'm hearing of your review but i think i wish there was more evil dead in the evil dead yknow
Based on your description of relentless gore, I assume it's quite similar to the vibe of the 2013 version in that regard, which I was hoping for and am excited to see!
I love the added note from Dean 😂❤️
Just got back. The sound design is SO effective. 😃👍
The cinema was almost completely sold out for the preview.
Nice to not be disappointed after waiting so long.
It comes out on my daughters birthday and we are definitely going to see it! And the Thursday before that we have tickets to see Bruce Campbell! So excited!!
So pumped for this!!
Happy Monday Emma. 🌈🦋🌹💘✨💋💜💘🌹👼🏻👼🏿🙏🏻🌷🌺🛼🛼
Just watched it. I love both of the remakes. They're hitting the mark with these 😎👍👍 Brought a slight bit of the black comedy 😂 The gore in this looks more real than Terrifier 2, though that franchise is one of my new favorites👍 The actress who played the mother (red head) was stunningly beautiful, before possession lol As a writer and artist I loved that contrast, her beauty and then the horror of her degradation.
I was so excited to see this and now you’ve made me desperate to watch it asap lol. Can’t wait!
I totally agree with one of the individuals who mentioned Demons 2, saying this new evil dead movie isn't original and steals ideas off demons 2 that young movie audiences will be clueless about demons 2!
going to see it Thursday. I'm so excited. this the most excited I've gotten for a movie since End Game lol
As bloody and gory as terrifier 2 ... Holy mother of god, now I am hyped!
hella high praise from my fave horror queen… they better pay you to promote this movie because i’m def gonna see it in the theater! x
I haven’t been this excited for a film in a LONG time!! Gonna do a double feature of evil dead rise and beau is afraid this weekend! Thanks for the review 🖤🖕🤘
hi Emma! I love love love Evil Dead, but I didn't like Evil Dead '13 at all until the last 20 minutes--I felt like Ash vs. Evil Dead was a much worthier inheritor to the throne (largely because it was funny as hell with really likable characters and really creative horror-action scenes). should I skip this one?
Thanks for your review, you have me excited! I cannot wait for this bloody film as well as Beau is Afraid coming up!
Em’ did you have to cover your eyes or look away briefly during any scenes?
Nope, but I’m very aware it’s a film I don’t want to look away I wanna see all the spfx they can pull off
This was the 1st evil dead movie I didn't care about the characters. Didn't care when they died.
Can’t wait to watch this going Friday!!!!
Evil Dead Rise was amazing, loved every second of it. Wait for "Talk to me" to come out, that movie is absolutely terrifying.
I've watched horror movies for many years. Since becoming a mother, I don't want any children actors at all. I doubt that I will watch this movie. Reading about Heather O'Rourke and her death, it just changed me and now I look for horror movies without children.
Omg I am LITERALLY counting down the hours until Thursday night!
Can't wait. We've been talking about it ever since the scream 6 trailer. We both were like, "well, gonna go see that."😂 We're going this weekend. Sounds awesome.
There's more than one Book of the Dead. Remember when the record was playing.
The artwork inside of the book, briefly as it was, looks better, but yes, there's more than one book.
That's at least what I heard. Beth did look like Ash's daughter, or granddaughter, how old is Bruce now,
because of this, I think it's more than a nod or homage.
Rise is looped/analepsis. Now we know how the future ends, but we don't know how it unfolds, or how if they might
intertwine. the two. It seems like The Dock would be a 2013, but Beth looks like she'll be Bruce.
I liked the end of Rise. Whom am I kidding, I loved it.
Had a good time.
Thank you for the review.
Definitely hope to see this movie with a big audience!
Definitely seeing it in the theater after watching your video. Thanks
I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE THIS!!!!!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Got my tickets for Sunday. Can’t wait to see it.
I feel almost exactly the same way as you! I really enjoyed it but something about it just didn't quite click as much as I had hoped it might. I think mine lands around 7/10 too though, which is wild in a franchise that's grown to this size to have so many great entries that I enjoy enough to still be rating them that high! I think them not quite explaining the differences enough brought it down. Overall I really enjoyed myself though and I have zero regrets about going to see this!
Also I laughed at the end of the video because my aunt has slowly grown to enjoy some horror and we'll go see some together, but she can't stomach gore. So I knew from the trailer that this one wasn't for her and I was like yep, nope, glad I called this as I was sitting in the theater slowly putting my popcorn to the side at one point because I couldn't even eat it haha. (No spoilers, but I bet most people who've seen it can guess haha.)
I can't wait to see this movie looks like a great movie!! I also can't wait to see your thoughts and opinions on this!!
LONG TIME FAN EMMA! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT 'THE RING' POSTER! I NEED IT! and will you be seeing Beau is Afraid soon? My mom is taking me to see it for my birthday, that should be fun lol. but we're both Ari Aster fans and saw Midsommar 3 times together so we can't wait.
Did you watch the video? Haha I mentioned that in the first 20 seconds 🤣
Can't wait to see this!
This film was very slick. Not frightening, it never felt real. It was like an action movie. Very influenced by Malignant which created a new genre for horror with action pacing and secondly influenced by the movie Aliens with the final 2 characters echoing Ripley and Newt.
You got me hyped up! Unfortunately I have to wait until Friday. So excited though!
Ahhhhh Emma you've got me so hyped!!!!
I am super psyched for this - great video Emma and I hope you are keeping well
Going Thurs here in the states.
Going to see it Friday am so excited to see it 😊
Great review I’m so excited for this movie 😭
