  • A crisis of confidence is brewing inside China, where the government is turning believers in the Chinese dream into skeptics willing to flee the country.
Li Yuan, who writes about technology, business and politics across Asia for The Times, explains why that crisis is now showing up at the United States’ southern border.
Guest: Li Yuan (www.nytimes.com/by/li-yuan) , who writes the New New World column (www.nytimes.com/column/new-ne...) for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Why more Chinese are risking danger (www.nytimes.com/2023/12/03/bu...) in southern border crossings to the United States.
    • More than 24,000 Chinese citizens have been apprehended making the crossing (www.nytimes.com/2023/11/24/us...) from Mexico in the past year. That is more than in the preceding 10 years combined.

A government that doesn't respect property rights is illegitimate. Great reporting!

I agree. You did just describe illegal immigration though.

usually when PBS has a chinese language reporter it is to translate chinese propaganda. it is very cool to have such a talented bilingual reporter actually on the front lines to get this story

Gao's case reminds me of the USSC's infamous _legal_ property taking case, _Kelo v. City of New London_ ... The owners got legally ousted so that a developer could make "better use" of the residential property. Nothing became of that dispossessed land. Disgusting and disgraceful.
I understand that local party officials in China can be very corrupt. Their "network" makes them practically untouchable. Sadly, Mr. Gao's success generated resentment and envy... China has to clean up its act in this regard.
    Be well.

The Chinese government doesn't care about human rights, in terms of financial freedom and security for citizens there .
