Open A Padlock With A Torch and Hacksaw

  • Learn how to easily cut open a case hardened padlock shackle (usually in a minute or less) using a torch and hacksaw blade when a large enough bolt cutter isn't available, or when there's no power nearby to use an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel. Works all the time. :-) This method involves temperatures which can exceed 1000 degrees Celsius. This method can also be used to make drilling holes into hardened steel plates a much easier task. OK people, after reading through some of the comments......
The purpose of this video was to show another method that CAN BE USED when a Cutoff tool or large bolt cutters are unavailable. The average person cannot pick locks, so that wasn't even a factor. The lock used in this video(which had a 3/8" diameter shackle) was 100% irrelevant. I was simply showing what to do on any padlock I had laying around. Normally this would be used on padlocks that are higher quality, and very hard to pick. This method can also be used to cut hardened steel bolts or rods, and as mentioned in the video, allow you to drill through hardened steel plate. If another channel uploaded this, or stole my idea(which has been done before), their video would already have 1/2 million views and everyone would be praising the video. To top it off, many CZcams channels don't even talk to viewers in their videos or explain anything in detail the way I do on my channel.

I've used this technique to cut hardened chain before, used fire bricks to make a sort of heat chamber like a crucible, heated up 1/2" tempered steel enough to anneal for cutting. Also if you get steel hot enough so it's glowing yellow/orange then rapidly cool with iced water it's overly tempered and brittle and can break with a cold chisel impact.

If you heat a shackle to bright orange, even going on to white hot, a set of bolt cutters will slice through that section of the shackle with ease (not quite literally 'knife through butter' ease, but close) and without doing damage to the high-carbon hardened steel bolt cutter blades (which just about always results to the uniform cutting edges of bolt cutter blades, when cold, hardened, high-carbon steel tries to cut/snap through like [or even harder] cold, hardened, high carbon steel). ...and even a much smaller set of bolt cutters will do the job.

I tested this at work with some circular stock made out of hardened tool steel.
I heated a 3/8" diameter pin to around 2200F and used a steel hammer and chisel to drive through it. Also heated another and quenched it with water. I could then use a file to cut through it.
To cut through a hardened lock, you can also use a cut off wheel (fastest method) or a carbide rod saw if the shackle is too thick to cut with a large bolt cutter.

Interesting video. I thought about this the other day when I needed to force a lock. I have 4 kids and thirsty friends so it happens surprisingly often lol. Normally I use an angle grinder but I was thinking about a more discrete and pocketable approach using a leatherman surge with a hacksaw blade attachment and a torch lighter. I think I might give up on that idea because it obviously takes quite high output to normalize the steel.

  • @DonzLockz
    @DonzLockz Před 10 měsíci

Good to know but i very much doubt that the cheap lock was hardened, even if its stamped on it. The hacksaw not gripping would most likely just be the chrome plating, give it a few more goes with the hacksaw. Lean the hacksaw against the body of the lock to keep it stable and give some hard strokes of the hacksaw.
Obviously raking or picking that lock would be super easy but you explained what and why you were doing it.👍

Using a hack saw to cut the lock on a hasp shouldn't be any problem at all. You usually have plenty of room. The padlock can be rotated into a position which makes it easy to hold and cut. I do like your idea of saving the cutting jaws on bolt cutters.

That's because the high-carbon steel article had been uniformly hardened ALL the way through. Things like shackles are 'case' hardened on the outside to some depth, but retain some tensility at the core to prevent shattering from percussive force. During my many years boilermaking/welding, and steel fabricating in engineering shops, we often worked with hard-faced steel plate (which has been surface/face [case] hardened surface to a depth) and where the drawing required holes to be drilled, we'd always pre-heat the drill-hole site around the center-pop mark with the oxy torch to soften (anneal) the surface at that point before drilling - otherwise it just takes a big toll on your drill bits, and magnetic drill bits.

shahjahan khan khan Hack saws won't cut into hardened steel, you'll only dull the blade of the saw.

So you don't have bolt cutters, but for some reason you do have a propane torch... what?

The great majority of viewers knew the lock used for the demonstration was IRRELEVANT.

You can do the same with a dremel in 1 minute. Bah

Sure, If you have a cordless unit, but what a smart person would say is, " Thanks for this video(which I didn't have to share), this is great information to know in the event I don't have a Dremel or large enough bolt cutters".
I keep track of the good and bad on my channel. The bad will never get any assistance from me if they ask for it.

That is how I cut them with a grinding cut-off wheel in the battery operated Dremel. Great tool for bike thieves (. )I(. )

electronicsNmore My bad for the language. I am sorry. What I wanted to say is that the method takes too long, not the video. A thief wouldn't waste 7 minutes but I promice you that without picking, but with a crowbar or a hammer or some power tools that lock doesn't stand 1 minute.

You should be, one day you may need to use this tip when cutting anything made of hardened steel.
