(picking 556) Can you saw through a hardened steel padlock shackle? (ABUS 45/50 with 7mm shackle)

  • I used the same equipment as in video ( "picking 555" - • (picking 555) How secu... ) where I cut a little widow in the brass body to twist open the shackle. Here I want to test how much resistance the shackle itself provides...
AMAZING result: The hardened steel shackle of the ABUS 45/50 has a width of 7mm and seems to be well hardened. The little saw could only cause some minor marks - no real threat. The teeth quickly became worn and the hacksaw blade dull. The same blade however could easily cut in the brass body. Of course you can use bolt cutters or a angle grinder, but was not the test.

It's always nice to see locks where "hardened" actually means hardened. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers, great performance of the Abus :-)

Always wondered why in Saw 1 movie they never tried to use the hacksaw on the padlocks that held the chains to the foot

It’s nice to see a quality hardened shackle - I hate it when some cheap locks just stamp the word ‘hardened’ into soft metal :-)

Yes. I was also very delighted that this shackle wad so resistant.

Nice experiment.. Not all Hardened Shackles are created equally although Abus as we would expect did a good job..

Yes, this time the hardness was real :-)

The nano coating on the Abus shackles is pretty good against a normal household blade and the slippery surface adds to that :). Try a diamond blade ;D 😁✌. Just for comparison what the normal blade is worth...I was once sawing off a steel bolt and it didn't go through...looked at it...no teeth on the blade left 😂😁. Love your lock testing videos Potti 😃👍👋🦊.

Thanks my friend - I'll see if I can find a different blade in the hardware store. I was really surprised how well the shackle held :-)

Thanks buddy :). Yes these blades are the last crap 😂. Thank you that you want to try it a second time :). A diamond blade/saw is around 20€...that's a bit expensive, but maybe you find chaper something similar which gets through tool steel :). 😃✌👍👋🦊

You can saw through any padlock shackle, even molybdenum and boron alloy with a cheap carbide rod saw.

Very nice test. Hardened on Chinesiun locks means pot metal. 😁 Good to see it's really hardened but it's Abus so it has to be.😎✌

Do you know if with BORON alloy shackles it would be just as hard to cut or even harder?

I just bought a abus 82/63 the shackle says "special alloy" on it, is that the same as hardened ?

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  Před 4 lety

Maybe it should mean hardened, but it can mean anything - just test the hardness with a file.

I do have a vice. However outside in the wild, the burglar has no vice - that's what I tried to simulate.

@@Potti314 yea but a padlock is gonna be fixed to something. You can usually apply a little pressure and lock it into a fixed position

Water pipe pliers... Those look a bit to big and hard to use on glass. I certainly wouldn't put my water pipe in them!

It might take eons to cut through that hardened steel. It can take like days to cut through if you do it constantly and no breaks 😂😂😂
