Walnut and Maple Picture Frame

- In this video, I make a frame for a painting that my daughter made. She is current enrolled in the Fine Arts program at VCU and majoring in painting.
The frame is made from walnut and soft maple. It's a pretty hefty frame. The walnut is about 2" thick, so it's thick enough to hold the canvas which is about 1.5" thick. The maple is used as a matte around the oil painting, and it is also used as an inlay around the frame, and as splines in each of the mitered corners.

I have made literally hundreds of picture frames in my life and it has never occurred to me to incorporate the matting into the frame itself. The effect is stunning. Love th d result.
Now I know what those dumbells are for. Who knew all these muscle heads were wood workers. Nicely done sir.
The built-in matting is absolutely genius!! 👏👏👏
As always, excellent job! Thanks, Mike!
That is a massive frame. First time I've seen anyone make a video about a frame that big. Great job!
Man that is one awesome frame. I’m sure she loves it! Love the mat into the frame idea.
Nice frame, and nice painting by your daughter!
Beautiful looking frame. Well done!
That is a beautiful frame. Great job!
Sir... just going through online videos and found your work... a lot like my work ,but different tools... loved it ... your daughters work is also amazing... thanks...
What a very nice looking frame!
That is a really cool frame! I love the inlay and the inner piece you did around the painting.
Lovely project to complement your daughter’s work. Subscribed.
Awesome picture frame. And the painting is amazing. You both are really talented!
- As always, great job. Thanx Mike.
Gorgeous frame!!!
Stunning frame. God! Frame that is better than the ones framing 100 million dollar paintings in museums.
Thank you so much!
Stunning... painting and frame !!
Thank you so much! I'll pass that on to my daughter.
Awesome painting with an amazing picture frame, you are both quite talented😉
You are both incredibly talented---looking forward to future collaborations!
Thank you, Beth. She's in South Africa for the rest of the year so there won't be too much art and framing going on for a while. We'll definitely get something lined up for early next year.
Very nice work! Thank you for sharing!
Great frame. I love the walnut and maple! Subscribed

Amazing. That is the word come out after watching.
Thank you, Eric!
Beautiful outcome. Outstanding craftsmanship. Thanks.
Thank you so much!
You know, I've been thinking of this since I saw it. I am just setting up a little framing studio in the garage for original pieces that I do. But my craft is photography and art, not wood. I don't have a full complement of wood tools, knowledge, or experience. I Would LOVE to see you make this frame again using the stuff that I have: a skill saw, hand held jig saw, and a mitre/chop saw. No table saw, planer, jointer, band saw. Can it be done? Care to demonstrate??? :)
That's an interesting challenge. It wasn't that easy to make this even with all the power tools, but I'm sure it could be done with hand tools. I'll give it some thought and see what I can come up with. It'll take me a while because of all the other projects I have lined up, but I'll add it to my list and try to fit it in this year.
Mine are still power tools. They all run on electricity, but the jigsaw and the skill saw are hand held (as opposed to table mounted). I do have a router and router table on the way too. Anyway, I enjoyed your work. Thanks for the replies.
Very pretty.
Really cool frame. you sure challenged yourself with the design - well done!
Thanks, Rob. I really enjoyed designing and making this one and was very happy with the result.

“...every now and then a picture worth framing” 😂 love it man. Glad I subbed to you!
Thanks, Brian. That means a lot!
Very nice!
beautiful ...
Very nice framing
5 years late but excellent work. Looks beautiful
This is one of the most interesting frame builds I’ve seen. 👍. You sir have AMAZING talent. This frame goes very well with the painting. Making the matt out of wood is thinking outside of the box. How many years of experience are you at? You made the frame build look easy AND I KNOW for sure that it is not easy . It’s your skill set that makes it look easy. Respect sir . 👍
Thank you for the feedback! I guess I've been doing woodworking off and on since I was a kid, so a few decades now. But I started to approach it a little more seriously about three years ago by trying to add a bit of art into my projects.
I made it by myself. I used woodprix woodworking plans for that.
Thanks
Nice job. I received my Ph.D. from VCU and miss Richmond.
I was there yesterday and know what you mean. A lot of cool stuff in that city. Thanks for watching! -- Mike
You used something to measure the height of the table saw. Would you care sharing the name of the tool
The tool I'm using is a Veritas Tool-Setting Gauge. www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=30074&cat=1,240,41064 I find it's a handy tool for setting up the table saw, router, and band saw.
Very very nice....Thanks
Thank you!
