Bringing Old Chess Pieces Back To Life and Making Extra Queens
A client who I'd made a chess board for a couple of years ago sent me some chess pieces and asked me if I could refinish them and also make two extra queens. In this video I show how I brought the pieces back to life and turned two new queens on my lathe.

    I think I understand the kerf issue buy was wondering if the only limitation in the inlay thickness is that is at least as thick as the kerf is wide. In other word could you put a 1/2" layered inlay into a 1/4" routed kerf?

    I am fixing to make the exact board. I had a walnut stump about 18in across and 2 feet long. I carefully cut it into slabs around nov, and let it dry really with the chainsaw. I paid 5 bucks for the chunk of wood. I went and picked up a little maple last week. I like the handles you did opposed to cutting into the bottom. I want a juice trey on one side and nothing on the other. Then one side can be for meat and the other veggies and bread. Very well done

    • @Woodumakeit
      @Woodumakeit Před 9 dny

      Just be careful that the wood is dry enough. I used some walnut and maple logs to make a chessboard. The logs had dried for about 3 years and the wood was still not dry enough after I cut them into strips. I recommend cutting the stump into oversized strips and then letting it dry further before beginning the project. Good luck with everything!

    • @Woodumakeit
      @Woodumakeit Před 9 dny

      I typically rough cut the thickness on the bandsaw to be about 1/2" and then they end up being about 3/8" after sanding.

      @@Woodumakeit thank you so much for replying. I am trying to learn a new skill and try my hand at making a chessboard for my son for his graduation. All I need to decide is whether to use a plywood/mdf substrate with thinner checkerboards or just go with 3/4” boards but I worry about movement. Your boards are absolutely fantastic.

    I did make it! Actually, I made two. Your video was incredibly helpful. I have a 100 year old barn that had Two large cupolas that were falling apart. It took me one year to make two cupolas from scratch. The frame was treated wood, the plywood was marine grade, and the louvres and sidings are made of Royal PVC cellular wood. It should last 25 years without needing any maintenance. It is 52" wide and 95" tall. It weighed over 200lbs. I hired a professional to install it with a crane. Thank you so much. Your instructions were very clear. I will try to post a picture. Thanks again. Paul
