That's a GREAT project. Not only the history of the board, but the family can watch this video and see how the "heritage" trees were transformed into a generational keepsake! !! !!!

LOVED the piece the spalted maple did wonders to change what would be a blander area. I never dreamed of using a core of plywood I bet it does prevent warping.

The spalted maple really stands out. I was surprised that the walnut rotted so much in just a few years. I guess the insect damage had been working on the interior of the log for a lot longer. Beautiful board even with the challenging material.

A method that I’ve found really helpful. Quarter the fresh logs and let them dry in quarters before milling them up. You get smaller widths, but they are all quarter or rift sawn and doing it this way minimizes checking.

Wish I could craft fine wok like this. I'm going to look through more of your videos to see if you ever make items from the perspective of those of us that don't have bandsaws and belt sanders. I've got a good table saw, miter saw, planer, hand held sander, hand held router, and jig saw. My shop has no room for joiner, belt sander, or bandsaw unfortunately. This the first video I've watched and I will be looking at more of your work. Keep up the great work and content.

Using some kind of a tenon would be much more important if the frame was not glued to the plywood tongue. I've used tenons in the past, but In my opinion, the plywood tongue gives the mitered corners sufficient strength.

This was a very timely video for me. I just built a new house in the forest. I had the contractor leave the logs of the trees that were taken down for the house. I have quite a large pile of 10 foot logs of mostly chestnut oak, some ash, some white pine and perhaps a sycamore. They have been down for perhaps 16 months, and I was thinking its about time to do something about getting the lumber out of them. I think I will use your technique on at least one of the smaller logs, and have a saw miller come in and do the rest.
