  • In this video, I make a folding chess board out of walnut and sycamore and with a three-color epoxy logo of the New York Islanders. The squares are 2.5" (63.5 mm) to give a playing area of 20" x 20" (508 mm x 508 mm) and the frame is 2" (51 mm) to give an overall size of 24" x 24" (610 mm x 610 mm). The board is 1" thick (2.5 cm). The frame includes a 1/4" (6 mm) ebony border and curly maple edge banding around the perimeter. The frame also has concealed magnets to keep the two halves together when the board is folded.
    The board is finished with TotalBoat TableTop Epoxy that I sanded using 320-grit, 400-grit, 600-grit, 800-grit, 1000-grit, and 1500-grit sandpaper, and then I proceeded to buff it to a high gloss with the VEVOR car polisher buffer using Meguiar's Ultimate Polish. Links to those products can be found below.
    This video and this chess board is not affiliated with, endorsed by, nor sponsored by the New York Islanders. The NY Islanders logo was used in this video solely for artistic purposes to show how a three-color logo like this can be incorporated into a chess board.

    Played chess for over 50 years, love to see these boards, i cant afford your services but would love to see a, 4 section chess board with the magnet idea and minimal if any surround, very compact with a bag of pieces, ideal for a ruck sack on the train to the chess tournament!!!!! Great work

    Another beautiful board, Mike. Either you're receiving suitable pay for a board such as this or it's just a labor of love. Either way, beautiful work. Love your video style.

      Well, it covers the cost of tools and electricity, but I enjoy making these, especially when the client challenges me to do something that I've not tried before. That's what pushes me to learn new things.

    Wow! Beautiful. I was surprised how easily the logo split in half by scoring the epoxy. I would have thought you needed a piece of paper between the two halves of the board in order for the epoxy to release without chipping or cracking.

      @Woodumakeit  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I wasn't sure how well the two halves were going to come apart, but it wasn't too hard at all. It definitely helped to have painters tape to separate the two halves before applying the epoxy.

      @@user-in1lv7lt2n I believe Laguna has changed their models since I purchased mine. Mine is a Laguna IQ, but if you look on their website now, I believe the one that I have is more or less equivalent to what they now call their Creator Pro Desktop CNC router.
