Donna Summer ~ I Feel Love 1977 Disco Purrfection Version

- The Billboard chart for the week ending August 6, 1977 had Andy Gibb's "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" at #1, Bill Conti's #1 "Gonna Fly Now" had dropped to #47 and The Brothers Johnson "Strawberry Letter #23" was on its way up at #34. The top new entry that week was Meco's future #1 hit "Theme From Star Wars" at #71.
There were eleven other new songs that week and at #86 was this groundbreaking electronic disco tune from Donna Summer. It was the coda for her latest LP "I Remember Yesterday" which pretty much summed up pop music from the 40's to the future with each era having a song on the album. This song's unmistakable intro of a rising synthesizer and at the crescendo, a dizzying array of layered synthesized sounds burst out of the radio at me that late spring. It started just as i got to the pharmacy and I had to turn off the car and listen to the whole thing while my sister waited digging the groove.
Hypnotizing and mesmerizing, it was a watershed moment in pop history. Disco historians and critics both agree that "I Feel Love" is the birth of EDM (Electronic Dance Music), courtesy of Giorgio Moroder, Pete Bellotte and Donna Summer. Summer's voice and Keith Forsey's kick drum are the ONLY elements not created by a computer. Moroder had this idea for a song using oscillators to create a sonic disco experience and brought it to Summer. She said, "Giorgio brought me this popcorn track and I said 'What the hell is this, Giorgio?" The "popcorn" she was referring to was the 1972 single by Hot Butter, an early song that used the Moog Synthesizer to great effect that replicated the sound of popcorn popping and syncopating it with the electronic beats and bass. She finished the song "as a joke" not realizing the impact it was going to have.
Summer notes that she knew the song was about the groove and that too many vocals would get in the way, so Pete Belotte wrote simple lyrics and she sang the song as if she were in a romantic reverie in her ice princess soprano and it fit perfectly. It was not considered for commercial release, and was relegated to the B side of "Can't We Sit Down And Talk It Over". DJ reaction was much stronger for the B side and Casablanca re-released the single with "I Feel Love" as the A side.
Peaking at #4 disco and #6 pop in the US, it topped the UK charts for four weeks. Its influence never wavered and in 1982 Patrick Cowley, an ex-lighting man and neophyte disco producer made a name for himself with his astonishing nearly 16 minute remix that actually improved on the original.
For this version I have edited together the original 12" version, the hard to find instrumental version and finish off with Patrick Cowley's remixed version for 27 minutes of disco heaven. I spent more money trying to find a pristine vinyl copy of the Patrick Cowley remix from 1982, acquiring FIVE copies and finally found one that was crystal clear...I hope you keep with the whole trip here... - Hudba

I use to dance to Disco Music at Discotects 3 to 6 hours a night. Good memories I can still remember going to them..I am 65 years old now.
I was 13years old when this song came out this is when music was good
ich bin bereits 73 Jahre und höre mir dieses edle Meisterwerk immer wieder an... Danke Donna da oben im Pophimmel 😍👍
L♡VE to the 70's! good vibes!!!nowadays music ain't got that same soul anymore..❤💫💃
I danced away to this in the 1970s in South Africa. On top of the glass Raffles Nightclub Maharani hotel in Durban, a glass outside lift up to the top floor, we could see through the coloured glass floor down to the ground as we were dancing! What a life!

I love ❤️ disco music 🎶 and I will always love it 😍
It is quite simply impossible to overstate the importance of this song. It is arguably the single most revolutionary piece of music (of any kind) in the last half century.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to my Mother. One of her Favorite songs. Love and miss you so badly. Also Donna Summer your voice is So Amazing and I am So greatful that my Mom introduced me to your music way back in the seventies.
I'm almost 64 and memories from the past give me this song, at that time in a small village in the Netherlands life was and still is BEAUTIFULL.....
Excellent post. You have cracked it. Most people make the mistake of concentrating on their own circumstances, which are variable and constantly changing as people age. Instead, we should remember that which is stable and unchanging, the fact that life is beautiful. This can lead to deeper considerations, of course!
I just turned 64 and love this.
you live in the 6th happiest country in the world.

I just turned 63 and twice this week I've had the best 30 minutes of my life. Thanks to Cat, Donna, Giorgio & Patrick Cowley.
"MUSIC IS LIFE" that's why your heart has a beat !
I am a hard rock and metal lover but I have to admit that this is the best record from the seventies. Still fresh and unique 40 odd years on. Play loud through a sub or good headphones. Heaven.
Fair play Peter. I was into punk/rock and disco in the late seventies. Took some shit but eclectic can be rewarding.
tru dat
I admit, I liked this because of it's pulsating sound. I loved music but mostly is the sound and the beat. Never fade the listening pleasure.
I'm 52 , an Aussie meathead from years ago but thanks to a glass BBQ one night, I agree
I first heard this in 1980 during stayong with my sister-in-law Surrey, England after returning from South Africa. A lovely man called Terry introduced me to it one night in Boxhill.
I've never heard this version. Music is ahead of its time. With her voice, this destroys any dance song in clubs today!

Rip Donna music an her voice will always live❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was born in 71 this song still remains absolutely the best futuristic song ever and still to this day sounds new and more than holds up
I paid 30 bucks for the Patrick Cowley mix back in 2000. Ebay was only 5 years old, but pictures had been added. I have never paid more for a song, but it's worth it. When i play it for someone who has never heard it, they freak. This is my all time favorite song ever recorded. I was 7 and came home from the 4th grade and Mom had this blasting on the old home stereo. I walked in and just sat on the floor and they had to get me my own copy of I Remember Yesterday and Live and More so they didn't have to play it for me all of the time. This mix is on my phone, and i used to listen to it when i could drive. Now it plays in the background in whatever I'm;' doing in my day.
You were 7 in the 4th grade? 😂😂😂
WTF are you even talking about?@@immaruwebster1812

I can recall the summer of 77, I was 15 at the time, when this blasted out of the speakers. Hearing it for the first time was mind blowing as it was totally different....still sounds great today
Same here, 15 and blasting this song. And all Donna Summer songs for that matter. ❤👍
But you are grandfather now .. im 7 years only lol lol lol
I cant imagine! 😆
I was 19 & closeted. Donna Summer made me come out and feel love!
I was 10 in 1977, l remember my sister had the Donna Summer album & used to play it all the time.
Take me right back to the late 70s fantastic.
Another awesome tune from an amazing time, thanks for this. I was lucky to be born in 1962 and when disco came about I was in my top dancing form, boogieing the night and day away while collectiing tons of Vinyl, which I still have and play to this day. I have the original Donna Summer - I Feel Love on 12" which sounds amazing, as did all Donna Summer's tracks, especially on 12" and yes, I have the Patrick Cowley version of I feel Love too on 12" ... Boy did I sweat loads dancing non-stop to that amazing tune. Fantastic times when dance and great music ruled the world ;-)
Alright now i hear you ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Me too. Still have over 1000 vinyls. I got the one-sided Casablanca 12" on import as soon as I could back then, but was disappointed that it was merely the 5mins 7" single with a 50% extension added from the middle part onwards -- something I was doing as a DJ anyway.
Years ahead of its time 🇬🇧🍀👍🙏😘♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is the best dance song of all time. To Giovanni Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer: thank you for the music and the memories.
wow I feel the hit of the night disco brings me on the dance floor
She really knew how to use her voice to accommodate GIORGIO’s music ! She created a certain unique magical SUPER DISCO MUSIC OF ALL TIME. NO ONE ON THIS PLANET COULD POSSIBLY RECREATE THIS WOMAN’s VOICE! I’m out of words!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was a teen during the height of her reign ..and her music was everywhere...... Amazing voice to an extraordinary talent.... Salute to you and ty for the musical memories you created for my generation and those to follow..........!!! ( RIP).
We're doing a show next year entitled 'The History of Electronica' and this starts it ... 🙏💖🎧💥💥🥳
when i was 12, i would play this 45 really loud so that you could hear it from the street. lived on a block where a bunch of kids my age lived. The song had just came out and no one heard of it yet. People would come by and ask who and what is that.. you have to imagine a world without EDM and then hearing this song. it was really decades ahead of its time. they would ask to play it again and again. this is a great mix. staying true to the original.....its also very nice to see you know your pop / billboard history. i think music history should be a course all younger kids should learn. great job!!!
Wow! That is such a cool story about 1977 and I Feel Love. I agree the sound and lyrics were way ahead of it's time. I'm glad that Donna/Giorgio and Bellotte were innovators and recognized that they had to record this masterpiece. It open the doors for techno and EDM. Most music fans love to cast Donna Summer as only a disco artist. However, she was much more than Disco and this song is living proof. See how this song has stood the test of time! Wow!
Oh yes, it's real livefeeling. I'm 58 years old. I ❤ the song too a I was young.
PAWsome! We did the same thing (lol). Timeless music!
Correct. Music = Art, and Art history is a subject in school.
@@Paul_MuadDib This song takes me all the way back to when I was 16 years old - except back then the radio stations would only play the 5:53 minute version, and (at least here in parts of Canada) the discos would only play the 8:00 minute "Extended" version. Now, at almost 60 I listen to this on my daily commute and it makes life a little bit nicer.
Bin Bj. 65 und fand es damals schon genial. Jetzt, so ein wenig gepimpt kommt es sogar noch geiler - Danke.
One off the best disco music. I´m 61

I was only 4 years old, I couldn't understand the different types of music. But when my sister came home with this record I was mesmerized, hypnotized!! this magical sound entered me. This was "my music" I realized that only electronic music (and then rock too) would give me the right energy. The rest doesn't matter! Thanks a lot Donna Summer & Giorgino Moroder
I remember dancing to this song in 1977 in New York club 57 with my polyester pants and platform shoes. Wish I could go back in time.
Me too, only I was wearing jeans and Frye boots.
Please don't make me jealous that I was too little and young to be let into the club. How I envied my slightly older cousins who could attend!

@@renaldschembri5175 Without a doubt!! And I find it was more than just the tracks they were laying out! Their sex appeal was on a level, very few couldn't even come close to replicating it without it looking forced in my mind. You either got it Or you don't, I thought once there was another, she was the niece of Dionne Warwick (Whitney Houston). But sometimes it's just not in the cards. It's tragic that to this day. It's all I can say about that. Well, life goes on, I wish you all. No matter what you celebrate. To do it with the ones you LOVE.....PIECE!!
That is why she is the queen of Disco. RIP Donna, you are missed.
And the longer the mix, the more we sweated, making all feel so sexy. Fond memories.

This is my favorite song of Donna Summer because of the high vibe it gives me. This 30min version is a piece of heaven because I put it on repeat for hours. I literally never get tired of it, although I'm sure my family is tired of hearing it from my room 😂😅 Great mix!💕🙌
Right now, it's gone midnight and I'm listening to it on my laptop via earphones with my dog beside me. Did the same last night too. I was about 17 when it came out. Can't remember what prompted me to search for it online, because it's not my usual type of music but very glad I did. This version is fantastic and high vibe is a perfect description. I certainly didn't appreciate how good it was when I first heard her.

Agreed. Me, too.
I was a twenty-year-old yupster when “I Feel Love” made the Top-40 in 1977, and even then it sounded like it came from the future. I am now listening to DiscoCat’s magnificent refreshment of Donna Summer’s very own Song of Songs. I never knew that Patrick Crowley accomplished his own 15-minute remix in 1982. It’s included here, along with the original album cut and the instrumental version. DiscoCat came up with a masterpiece against which other mixes by rival DJs must be measured. I listened all the way through, that’s why I believe that Donna Summer and Patrick Crowley are smiling down from heaven.
When I was 10 years old I was obsessed with Donna Summer. I had her Bad Girls album and played it over and over and over again up in my room. My best friend would come and listen also. I knew all the words to every song. I wanted to be her. ♥️💕
you have it in your name donna🤣👍🏻
I truly loved her too. I remembered a school friend who used to look like Donna Summer and because of her resemblance, I befriended her and were friends for a long while. She was slim ,tall and skinny and she used to enjoy me calling her Donna Summer. I am mesmerized by this song...REST IN PEACE, BEAUTIFUL LADY..
You were her in your mind.
I still have my vinyl Bad Girls album! Played it all the time when I got it in '79!
