I got to doodlin' around with another Blondie song and I kinda pushed it as far as I could without making it boring. What amazes me most about Blondie's "Rapture" is the super original funky hip hop track they recorded for it. They did not sample other groups funk, but they sure figured out how to get the flavor and make it their own. The rapped lyrics telling the story of an absurd UFO encounter on Earth were written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Debbie mentions that she still has the original papers and you can easily see who wrote which parts by the handwriting. As for the music track, there's a horn part that makes me think of "Which Way Is Up" by Stargard, there is a Chic-like guitar riff and then I realized that the bass line is evocative of Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby". When "Rapture" came out, I had already been addicted to the rapping antics of The Sugar Hill Gang, Lady B and Kurtis Blow. So, hearing Debbie Harry rap and sing her way through this one was a treat. The rest of the band were wary of Rap, thinking it might be detrimental to the band. I suppose that is a valid claim, but they should have heard what Stein and Harry did. The sheer beauty of the marriage of music and oddly rhyming lyrics were something that Stein and Harry were confident was a winner. So it was, peaking at #1 for two weeks back in March 28, 1981. The song itself has been sampled by many hardcore rap artists, starting with Grandmaster Flash. Blondie broke up after the relative failure of "The Hunter" and kinda bubbled under for years until 1999 when they released "Maria" and exploded all over again. It felt good to have them back and they have continued to record and release great music. Recently they released "Pollinator" and its worth giving a listen to, I'm waiting til payday to go buy the CD, but I've checked it out on iTunes at geo.itunes.apple.com/us/album... - Hudba
Debbie Harry spitting lyrics and sounding better than 99% of today’s female MCs/rappers
I agree with you. Debbie Harry would deserve the title of Diva.
CRANK UP THE bASS MUTHERFUCKERS!!!
Didn´t she also appear in Wild Style?
90 haters would disagree, but I wouldn't worry about those losers! @Orlando Douglas
All thanks to Corporate America.
I used to work in a record store where Blondie came to sign records. While I was at the office by myself typing, Miss Harry open the doorby herself and asked me if she could come and spend a few minutes there. I said YES of course and there she was!! sitting just quiet and me.. working, until the pizzas and other people arrived. Can't erased the memory out of my mind. Yes!!!!
Its close enough to the 70s to be a 70s song ,, Thats what 80s kids love to say bout 70s songs lol
not jealous, at all! ( omg so jealous lol!) saw Blondie live six times & they still kill it!! lucky thing!!!

Love this extension ♥️
I am listening in 2024 who is with me. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Rap, disco, rock and funk in the one masterpiece of all times. Big respect!
That is so true.
And loving it just as you described. Floating in bliss of memories of youth. Everything changes but it's good to remember times , peoples and places . Well most the time anyway. Stay free .
A revolutionary song
You hit the nail on the head, buddy. Perfectamundo.
Wasn't she the one that invented rap going?I don't mean chuck berry that was a different type of rap this is more like Rock and Disco
This song from 1981 could STILL fill any club dance floor in 2020 (and beyond.)
It was the first song to top the US charts containing rapping, and by a White female funnily enough.
Throw a little Bleach on the Barbie mate
Yes indeed.
What nightclubs do you go to ₩
Nothing could fill a dance floor in 2020... But agreed!
1981. I was a 18 year old metal head driving home from a rock and roll club at 2am when this came on the radio. Before I could put in a Sabbath cassette my foot was tapping and I listened through. Don’t tell anyone. 🤫
I can relate. I was a total headbanger in the 80s. Loved Scorpions, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Aerosmith. But sometimes when no one was around I'd blast Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash.
No shame in that boys. Variety is the spice.....
@@BurmaShane Word ☝ up!

That was arguably the best decade in the history of the world to be a young person. It could be hundreds of years before another set of circumstances can come up like that
The song is a combination of disco, funk, and hip hop with a very unusual rap .
Nice job Deborah Harry
Rappers liked it, but wondered.. What in the heck is she talking about?
Haha haha, really. Yep.
My brother credits it as the first rap song.

I turned 13 yrs old on March 17th 🍀in 1981 when this hit the Top 10 and sailed to #1 by March 28, 1981. I was at that age right there with you. I bought the 45 single at Woolworth's at age 12: I still own it 🖤💛.
My ex wife could sing and rap this whole song from memory. She was 10 when it came out.
Fantastic mix that doesn't destroy the song but rather gives every instrument and riff a chance to pop to show what a masterpiece this song is, even down to the rhythm hand claps. Well done!
Claps are tight. I never really paid attention to it when it first came out. Thanks for the info.

I want your love by Chic is another good one, but NOT nearly as good as this one!
Rapture Still a Hit today !!! I can understand every word Debbie Harry is saying. Love her voice.🥰
What a group of truly talented individuals. So far ahead of their time and timeless...
gotta love how debs is spitting these lyrics with this high lvl of funk
...standing in the AA luggage area at LAX 25 years ago or so, waiting with 270 +- others, I turn around and slightly bug out as Debbie Harry is standing right behind me & I notice what look like most of the rest of the band milling about as well,... i was mute, thinking of what to say if i saw a chance..
...finally when the carousel started moving and every one shuffled forward to look for their bags she moved up next to me i looked over smiled and said 'hi love your music', she thanked me and I said "you know .. Rapture is still one of my favorites, you need to try that again" she laughed and said " ah! So your the one?" and wished me well as she reached for her bag....
..one of my few, brief, brushes with rock and roll (rap?) greatness......;-)
I feel good about it.

This is my favorite Blondie song.
Me too but it’s got a lot of competition from an amazing band.
Yeah it does
Love it. Rapture is one of my favorite "pop" songs from the 80's. What a masterpiece.
Its closed enough to the 70s AS BEING A 70s song ,, Thats what 80s Kids love to say bout songs that came out in the late 70s lol
This one reminds me of Elon Musk. He is the man from Mars. That's why I don't get it about that one. He's too young for me, no matter how well I think about him. He's definitely very lovable. Undeniably very loveable. I don't know if I want him close to me, too tempting to be a cougar. My oldest daughter and I reaffirmed the agreement the other day. More age difference between her and him, than him and I. That's because of what she witnessed here about young men after me, years ago, even when we went out together. I didn't understand it myself. I didn't even know what a MILF was when yelled at me. She had to tell me what that means.
I remember when soldier boy performed this on solid gold. Tragic what happened to him. Still love the song though
What happened to Soldier Boy?
This is a beautiful song sung so well. I love Debby Harry voice and her pick in songs to perform.
She' has a beautiful voice, her music will be forever timeless.
The first Rap of any kind to hit the charts - a full year before "Rappers Delight" . Blondie was one of the most innovative bands of their time. Pioneers in Rap, Rock, Punk, and of course, Disco. This band is ridiculously underrated
No, this came a full year AFTER Rappers Delight! Otherwise, I agree with everything else you say.
I think you mean the 1st rap no. 1. Both songs are legendary :)
Rapper's Delight came out before this...
Rappers Delight started everything! This was after
The drummer is insanely talented and amazingly awesome! It’s like his fast fast hits practically has him lifting off his seat from the hits on the drums. Just so gooooood! Who is like that now in video and radio music??
No wonder this song was a hit, it's got it all.
When I was in 5th grade, the Blue Bird school buses with RADIOs hit the streets!!! Boy was that radio the difference maker. Pink Floyd, The Wall was the big hit, but Blondie was big and I fell in love with her on the school bus...Fast Forward 15 years and I was working at a big Ad Agency and wet to a private industry party... After taking some party favors and the night rolled on, somehow through the graces of a higher power, I am dancing with Debra Harry!!! See was a guest performer and somehow I got to spend a couple hours with her and did a little grinding on the dance floor. Every little boy's dream come true... well almost :) but boy, did that 5th grader have a good PM that night!!!! O yeah, her music is awesome also :)
The pink floyd. Yes owner of a lonely heart, and some others jammed hard in the old days

Remarkable range and phrasing. That phrasing thing must be a Jersey thing, Sinatra had it too.

And NO auto-tune gimmicks...pure talent.
Never realized how cool this tune was as I was a quote(rocker) and now I see what greatness is. Debbie came to Prov.R.I.and some punk dissed her. She smacked in his face and said fu do you know who I am
This song, I think, is what made it possible for RUN-DMC to work with Aerosmith later. Rapture was THE song that first married rock/pop to rap/hip hop and proved it was a viable combination.

As a Hip Hop head, it’s only right and true to recognize the importance of this track to Rap/Hip Hop music.
Obviously it didn't have much impact on today's Hip Hop and Rap scene. Cause this track from the eighties has a hell lot more drive and power than the crap they produce today!
@@skippermeak7995 Even today’s hip hop wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for this track. That’s the point.
@@charlesjonessr3684 They didn’t have mainstream play. This was the first track to feature rapping on a song on mainstream video and radio.
@@djm3suxx Wrong!! the first rap songs were sung by Otis Redding & Carla Thomas ( TRAMP ) in 1967. Second was by Pigmeat Markham: (Here comes the Judge) 1968.
They were, NO DRUGS, nor VIOLENCE mentioned in the lyrics. Instead more about loving fun, and Clean Jokes.
Shorty Long also recorded ( Here Comes The Judge ), in a dance version when people were still the doing the Jerk, The Horse, The Boogaloo. Wonderful House Parties I can still remember..
