Love the way Blondie looked straight at the camera, almost felt like she could see you. Every boy in the 70's and 80's had a crush on her! Every song they did sounded so different.
I think I was eight years old when this came out, I lost my innocence right…… there! Have not been the same since.

When this song came out it definitely was a mega hit. Men loved her and the women wanted to be like her. No one was like her and since then no one’s come close.
You can’t go wrong with any Blondie song. They are all similar but different but all driven by that gorgeous quirky voice of the beautiful Debbie Harry
Big Blondie fan here, and there are a couple of historical facts about them that are significant: 1) Blondie was one of 4 bands that helped kick off the original American punk scene in NY at CBGBs (the other 3 were The Talking Heads, The Ramones and Television, the British punk scene was concurrent but separate). 2) Many of their hardcore punk fans considered this song to be the ultimate sellout, having little to do with their roots, while for mainstream listeners this was their introduction to the band 3) Regardless of what the often-incorrect Wikipedia says, disco was still in swing in 1979, though it was fading, and didn't exist at all in the 60s, having started up around 1972/73 4) In their defense, Blondie was quite musically adventurous, and a few years after this song had one of the first ever rap hits, with the song Rapture. I've always admired Debby Harry for putting her career aside to care for Chris Stein. She doesn't just have a heart of glass; it's pure gold.

I remember reading that, before it had an actual name, they referred to this song as “That Damn Disco Song” 😂 I still have my original vinyl of Parallel Lines bought when the album was still new. Yes, I’m old 😂
Disco was still riding high as the classic Night Fever soundtrack with many hits from The Bee Gees and others came out in 1978. This song is definitely disco but not usual for Blondie which as you read dabbled in many different genres of music. Deborah Harry didn't usually sing this high. Give a try to their other number 1 hits... Call Me is more rock/pop, The Tide Is High is reggae and Rapture has some of earliest rapping. One Way Or Another is a fave and is rock/punk.
@@Scary__fun I had it in my head that SNF was released in 1977, so looked it up and...we're both right, really. It was released December 16, 1977, just in time for the Christmas market, and of course continued to have an impact well into and beyond 1978. Glad you mentioned One Way or Another, also a fave of mine and a great suggestion for Salvo's next review!

Got to briefly meet drummer Clem Burke at Painted Sound in LA years ago, and had the opportunity to tell him as much face-to-face. Great guy. Blondie rules.

Interesting that this song came out a few years before MTV. Thus very few people had seen this video when the song was released. Had MTV existed then, it would’ve been an even bigger hit.

It is videos from songs like this one and songs from Meatloaf and Queen and others that caused Mtv to become a thing in the first place
I certainly remember seeing the video at the time courtesy of 'Top Of The Pops'--our weekly chart show here in Britain. If MTV had been around it would, of course, have had much more exposure. MTV didn't make it to a mass audience in the UK until the launch of satellite broadcasting around the late-80s.
This video was definitely still played on MTV though.
Saw it loads of times on top of the pops and such shows in the UK. MTV has never meant much here and we have never relied on it to introduce us to music. That's probably one of the reasons why nirvana already had a big following in Britain long before the USA was introduced to them with SLTS.
I was into Blondie when they were still considered "underground" I never got to see them live, but one night, around the time this song was out, Debbie and Chris were checking out rehearsal spaces and the owner of Quack Studios was showing them around and opened the door to one of the rehearsal rooms and there they were standing in the doorway while my band was playing. I'll never forget the sight of Debbie with no make-up wearing jeans and an over-size sweater, tapping her toe and bopping her head in time to what we were playing.

Spot on, as usual, Dagmar! I would only add that she is an icon of fashion as well as music. Debbie showed us girls that we could rock & be punk if we wanted. It is rumored that she was required to wear a black dress for a performance & she didn't have one. She slipped into a maintenance closet & took a black garbage bag & scissors to cut a hole for her head & arms to make a dress. She wore her "black dress" on stage.

Blondie had finally hit the big time, years of work and finally hitting the wave. Her boyfriend, who I think was the drummer, got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.
She stopped everything and personally cared for him. She chose humanity over the money and that is why I have the greatest respect for her not just as an artist but as a human.

1 second after she starts singing you look like you had an epiphany, and immediately understood why this song was number 1 on so many charts.
This is one of those song that as soon as the band hear the recording everyone in the room knew this was going to number 1.
I've always enjoyed Blondie. Doesn't matter what style they played, THAT voice made sure it came through. Then of course when videos appeared - well, you've seen her. The rest of the band were no slouches either. I like many kinds of music but Jazz is my jam. So you can imagine how delighted I was when, during her solo period, she became the vocalist for a jazz band called The Jazz Passengers for one album in 1997 called Individually Twisted. I probably would have bought the album for the title alone. She fitted right in and did not disappoint. Elvis Costello, a popular English artist of the time (and since) who, like Blondie, started out punk but forged his own path, wrote and sang a song on the album. Slightly less of a surprise there since he married a well known jazz singer called Diana Krall. The mot du jour for this comment is 'eclectic'.

Many dance clubs saved this until the last dance of the night as their "closer" and at 4am I was right in the middle of it. Doesn't get any better.
Debbie Harry was a dynamo! And she was able to procure one of the best drummers of the era, Clem Burke.

When Blondie went Disco some fans weren't happy but you have to admit the genre lent itself to great dance music. I wasn't a big fan of Disco but loved to dance and frequently went to our local disco bar and danced the night away. This was a favorite for many of us dancing nuts

Rapture has been called the FIRST RAP song. Your reaction to the music/video was great to see. I remember playing this and other Blondie on the college radio station I would fill-in over the Summer sessions.
More accurately, it was the first mainstream rap song. Rap was already a thing in the urban subculture, but Blondie was the first band to incorporate it into a mainstream song. I'll forgive her for that.
I was front row at a Blondie gig in 1979.... every young man's dream at the time!

Blondie had it all...in bucket loads. Obviously stunning appearance, the voice, the movement, the look, musical interpretation of the song as well as a bucket load of charisma..wow!! a complete full deck. As other comments have noted she was 33 years old!! when Heart of Glass came out in 1979. Blondie was a superb entertainer. one of the very best acts around. Magnetic and utterly compelling, she is still making music today. She still looks incredibly young today.

I remember hearing that song in my mom's car, l remember exactly....l was mesmerized. I never heard such a sweet voice. I was hooked!
By the way, I also was crazy over the New Wave era and had tons of albums as we called them then. I still love that sound it's one of my favorites. I was also a young little hippie in the late sixties so I also do love the psychedelic era. But if you want to sample the New Wave era, I would suggest that one of your first listens would be The Plimsouls " A Million Miles Away." To me it perfectly defines the New-Wave era, and it also just happens to be a great song. So much fun and I miss being young.

Blondie exploded onto the scene in 1979 as a new wave band. I was a senior in high school and they were a big deal!
as a young boy i would watch her on Solid Gold and just be totally enthralled. it did not understand what i was feeling, but oh was i feeling it.
I was 11 in 1979, and was given this single at a friends birthday party. I talked my mum in to letting me buy the album a week or so later. It was the first record I ever bought. And still right up there as one of my all time favourites! So much fun watching people discover it now all these years later. And really nostalgic to hear it again too! Do more!!

This should have been the song of the year when it came out. It still gives me the same feeling I had when I was a kid. And boy was she beautiful.
Blondie, started out at the Iconic NYC bar CBGB's. About the same time as a number of other great NYC bands like "The Ranones, the Talking Heads". A musicial "Hedwig and The Angry Inch" band played there a number of times testing songs before doing a 2 yr theater run in NYC before it was made into a movie. The last person to play the lead character it the theatre run was Allie Sheedy (Breackfast Club).
She Was an actual Play Boy Bunny.
If I recall correctly (it is over 40 years ago!) Debbie said in interview that this was written as a spoof of the still-current disco scene and the band were totally caught off guard by its success. They hadn't been sure about releasing it as a single because they thought it might be seen as a 'novelty' record and damage their reputation.
Blondie's first hit over here in the UK was 'Denis, Denis' but this was undoubtedly the smash that put them into the top bracket. The song was certainly helped by the video which leaned heavily on Debbie's stunning looks. For me it was, however, her distinctive vocal styling and the fact that the band were clearly having fun both with the lyrics and the performance that captured me (although, being a male and a teenager I was not oblivious to her charms!).
Debbie Harry, Christie Hynde, the TRUE groundbreakers for women in rock . Both were original and one of a kind. Front women in a band full of guys, singer/ songwriter and sexy to boot . All done with true talent and class.

Yeah... I get it, FIRE! Music was so much better before they started running everything into the 440 range during the 90s. Now everything sounds the same with a sprinkle of pop. The 70s and 80s were a unique sound.

I first heard this song on a transistor radio walking around my military base in the Jordan River Valley in 1978. It so amazed me that I waited anxiously to hear who it was at the end...in case it never ever played again on the radio 📻, because I wanted to buy it right away.
This song was used so incredibly well in the "House of Gucci" movie Trailer #1. I think that's where it gained a new audience for Blondie!

I can't speak for the other 385 million views, but what happens with me is I hear the song somewhere by accident. Because it's such a catchy song, it burrows deep within my brain, where it stays for a while, usually between a couple few days to over a week, on occasion. I sometimes have to play it constantly, just to force myself to get sick of it. Then some time goes by, and I hear it again randomly, and the cycle begins anew.
You can’t believe the crush 13 year old me had on Debby Harry in the late 70’s and early 80’s! But the music was so damn good too! In addition to their many hit singles they had a plethora of great album cuts, like “Slow Motion”, “Accidents Never Happen”, “Sunday Girl”, “Shayla”, “Angels On The Balcony”, etc. I can’t list them all!
This song has that certain drugged up, melancholy, dancing the night away vibe that I really like about 80s music. Its like an upbeat funky blues. Plus Shes a total babe. Classic for sure.

If you like this lane/genre/era, Message of Love by The Pretenders is a jam. The band features another amazing female lead singer, Chrissie Hynde. More rock than new wave, but a stellar band of the era nonetheless.
This song and video were the mesmerizing introduction to Debbie Harry and Blondie, then and now. It was a transition away from disco.
I was too young to get into discos back in the late 70s I was 12 when this hit the clubs but this song was huge it was everywhere that year nonstop on the radio. Deb is going be 79 this year.
She had a great voice - they disbanded when Chris Stein got a near deadly disease in the early '80s, and she was his caretaker. They made a comeback in 1999 with MARIA. Also, try DREAMING, SHAYLA, SUNDAY GIRL, and some older stuff like KIDNAPPER, X OFFENDER, ATOMIC, UNION CITY BLUE - and don't miss her cover of RING OF FIRE from the movie "Roadie"(1980).
