Imperial College, London 1968
Brian May and Tim Staffell, two long-time friends and students at the college who had previously played in a band together, decide to start a new band. May would play guitar and Staffeel would play bass and sing. They placed an ad for a “Mitch Mitchell/Ginger Baker type” drummer, and another Imperial College student named Roger Taylor auditioned and got the job. They named the band Smile, and soon began playing gigs all over town.
Soon, they caught the attention of the American record label Mercury Records, who signed them in 1969. They recorded three songs at Trident Studios in June. Meanwhile, Staffell’s friend Freddie Bulsara, who had been in various bands, had probably become Smile’s biggest fan. He was at all their shows, and kind of like an unofficial fourth member. However, Staffell didn’t like the direction Smile was going, and left the band to form a new one called Humpy Bong. Brian May and Roger Taylor still wanted to perform their songs, but they needed a new lead singer. Enter Freddie Bulsara, who enthusiastically took Staffell’s spot. Bulsara convinced them to change the band’s name to Queen. The next year, he would change his own name to Freddie Mercury.
Freddie sang beautifully, but wasn’t big on playing instruments, so Queen would need a bassist. The band went through three before John Deacon ended up joining the band, who not only excelled at bass but also at tinkering around with electronics. After that, Queen practiced relentlessly. As a four piece, they played their first show on July 2, 1971 at Surrey College. By that point, they had already recorded a four-song demo but had no luck attracting record labels with it.
Using his graphic design skills, Mercury designed a logo for the band based on the zodiac signs of its members. Those two lions represent Deacon and Taylor, both Leo, the crab represents May, who is Cancer, and the two fairies represent Mercury, who was Virgo.
In 1972, the band got their first break thanks to producers John Anthony and Roy Thomas Baker. They got them a management deal under Neptune Productions to try to help them get a record label. One of the biggest perks was access to Trident studios, one of the best recording studios in the world at the time. The band got lots of quality time learning how to produce magnificent recordings in those studios and recorded quite a few songs with Anthony and Baker.
The next year, Nepute Productions got them a contract with both Trident and EMI Records. On July 13, 1973, EMI released Queen’s self-titled debut studio album. Elektra Records released it in the United States. It was a mix of heavy metal and progressive rock, and the few critics who reviewed it generally loved it. However, the lead single, “Keep Yourself Alive,” didn’t do well, and the album failed to get much mainstream success. In November, Queen went on their first major tour to support the band Mott the Hoople.
After that tour, the band went right back to Trident Studios to finish recording songs for their second studio album. EMI and Elektra both released those songs as the album Queen II on March 8, 1974. The album ultimately also didn’t do that well, but the cover of the album first featured this iconic picture of the band, taken by Mick Rock. Also, the album featured the band’s first true hit song in the UK, “Seven Seas of Rhye.” Why was the song a hit? Well mostly because back in February the band appeared on the popular BBC program Top of the Pops after David Bowie had to cancel. Yep, they were a last-minute replacement.
To promote Queen II, the band went on their first-ever headlining tour of the United Kingdom. In April, they went on their first-ever tour in the United States. With their third album, Sheer Heart Attack, they entered the mainstream.

What is your favorite Queen album or song? Mine is A Day at the Races and "Bohemian Rhapsody" (of course).

The saddest thing is the song mother love. When they nearly finished it Freddie said that he didn’t feel so good and they would finish it tomorrow. He never came back. Brian has to finish it alone with vocals and everything cause deacon left. Depressing

Queen wouldn't be Queen without not just Freddie Mercury but the whole band. They all had talent. Freddie's voice, Brian's/John's iconic guitar solos/bass lines, and Roger's drumming
Its crazy how a small band called Smile turned into Queen, one of the biggest bands in history. it really inspires me to keep going. we love you. Freddie, and we will never forget you.
Queen is honestly probably the only band that EVERYONE knows and have at least one song they knew and like. From old boomers to the new young generation everyone knows bohemian rhapsody, we will rock you, we are the champions, and many young people are fans of Queen (including me). It's the band my grandad knows, my mom knows, my nephew knows
I was at a restaurant in midtown Manhattan one day and Queen came on. A bunch of easy teenage girls came in and started singing along. I believe the song was Another One Bites the Dust. I was surprised to say the least.
He forgot ONE important fact. Their final song before Freddie died was mother love on the made in heaven album. When recording the song Freddie said he felt ill so he went home to never come back to the studio. Brian may ended up singing the last part of this masterpiece. Amazing video❤️

Queen will never be topped! I'm 60 years old. When I was in high school band we were at a competition and the host school performed a Queen Medley that was absolutely phenomenal! If Bohemian Rhapsody is playing when we are in the car the rule is that we cannot exit until it's over. (while singing along of course!) RIP Freddie! Thanks for everything!
Tim Stafell and Roger Taylor were not at Imperial College of Engineering with Brian. Tim was at Ealing College of Art with Freddie and Roger was at University of London. And Freddie did play an instrument, he played the piano.
I'm pretty sure roger had a 1977 album to
Freddie Mercury could play both percussions, piano, and guitar
@@giovannigobbi4832 He only knew like 5 chords on the guitar.
@@lunarbeatsoffical Even only the first 20 seconds of Ogre Battle are more than five chords, and May was very impressed when he wrote that... Freddie could play very fast according to him, I'm not sure but he might have once said he could play guitat even faster than him... And he knew lots of chords, do you even realize what the mindset of piano player is? Constant change of chords, that's the same thing for his guitar playing
@@giovannigobbi4832 lol I know a lot of the mineset of a piano player and guitar player because i'm both of them. And i was just going off of what Freddie said or at least what I heard him say. All he said was he knew like 3 chords top. But ig I was wrong.
I saw Queen at the Stadium in Chicago December 1977.
I'm in my 60's and still remember Freddie in white leotard and ballet shoes. Somebody tossed a bouquet of flowers on the stage and Freddie threw them back to the audience 1 at a time, I got a red carnation which I kept for many years until one day I realized it wasn't around anymore and it was lost to many moves from apartment to apartment.
There will never be another "entertainer" who comes close to Freddie's talent.
Wow that sounds amazing!
Without the Queen biopic, I wouldn't ever got to be introduced to Queen. Because of the biopic, I became a fan of Queen. I was surprised that I recognized a few of their songs despite not knowing the name of the band. With your video, A Brief History of Queen, you reignited my love for Queen 👑❤️
I've been a fan since I was somewhere around 9 years old. I had just come back from visiting a friend ans my parents had gotten me a "new" stereo with a cassette player, record player and 8- track player. They also got me some records and 8-tracks, one of which was a Queen album. From there I was hooked. One of my favorite songs of theirs is Radio GaGa
"Innuendo" would probably have to be my favorite Queen album, and "I Want It All" would be my favorite Queen song. Epic video, and hopefully the next one is a brief history of Humpy Bong!
lol a Humpy Bong video would be very brief. I've been hearing "I Want it All" in commercials lately. Yeah their later stuff is so underrated.
@@mattbeatgoeson The "I'm Going Slightly Mad" video is hilarious. In all seriousness, though, that is a great song.

My favourite Queen album and song are exactly the same. These might not be the most popular choices, but I'm glad that there are others who think like me. I think that in terms of music, 1984-1991 was their best period.

In March 1974 I went to my very first Rock Concert. It was at the Cambridge Corn Exchange. I was a spotty 13 year old teenager. The band were called Queen and they were described as a fast rising college band. Freddie wasn’t “keen on playing instruments”? He played piano beautifully and composed on piano. He even played guitar in concerts for “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Freddie and Roger were friends before Queen as they both worked in the same stall/shop selling scarves.
yes that's true but he didnt like to play piano that much even though he play it beautifully.
even though freddie was amazing at the piano, he personally didn’t think he was very good at all.
Yeah if anybody doesn’t think Freddie plays piano well, they should check out Death On Two Legs, The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke and The Millionaire Waltz 😂
Freddie stated many times that he enjoyed "running around on stage" much more then playing the piano, he was good at it and it was his way of writing songs but playing piano was not something he enjoyed
He wasn't keen on it. He was REALLY GREAT at playing the piano, but wants keen on it, ergo he'd rather not do that.
I think he said that he enjoyed performing , as in running around and singing, interacting with the crowd etc. More than he did playing.
Funnily, I, a 16 year old, own Queens greatest hits on vinyl and I asked my mum what records she had when she was younger and what my grandparents had, the only record my grandad ever listened to was Queens greatest hits. Thought that was funny.
It’s absolutely astonishing that they went on an 8 album run of just greatness.
I would make the same claim about Iron Maiden, Genesis, Rush, and Yes
Thank you for including their post-Live-Aid discography, it’s so underrated (especially Innuendo). I also think that it would be better if you included Freddie’s solo albums and his collaboration with Montserrat Caballé (at least one of the best crossovers in music history imo). If you can make a separate video on that, I would love to watch it :D

People often fail to mention "Lap of the Gods" It was their first crowd singalong number. Not written as such but it just evolved into one when they played live. It was semi classical and no rock band had producd anything like it
Imagine being a bands biggest fan and getting to sing for them.
one of my earliest core memories is watching Live Aid on a VHS tape with my dad in like 1999. he is the greatest Queen fan, and at some point he confessed to me that his only wish in life was that if he ever had a child they would love Queen. i kind of understand why … one of the greatest things that ever happened on this planet
thank you for not including too much of anybody’s personal life, it’s nice to hear someone talking about just the music and not any controversy :)
Bohemian Rhapsody is and always will be my favourite Queen song, I also love Queen 2
I'm one of the people who became a fan of Queen because of their music, not because of their movie. I was born in 2005 and I didn't know that they made a movie even after I knew them very well.
My favourite Queen's songs are:
1. Bohemian Rhapsody
2. Another One Bites the Dust => always plays this at work when someone tenders his/her resignation
3. A Kind of Magic
Queen is a very special band to me since I grew up with it from mid teen until late 20's.
I was 15yo when Bohemian Rhapsody was released and became a hit, just started Year 10 in a boys school.
I remember during recess Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the songs regularly played on the school speakers around the school in 1976.
It was a wonderful memory.

Absolutely applaud your detailed research and “Long live the Queen.”.
Remember "Another One Bites the Dust"?
there was a cockroach running over the floor in Freddie Mercury's kitchen. He tried to step on it,, but he missed. He tried again and missed. He didn't quit and got the job done on the 3rd go. And said "Another One Bites the Dust"
Brian May was sitting at the table and listening to this. He said "that sounds like it could be a hit."
Mercury agreed, and again did STOMP, STOMP, STOMP, " Another One Bites the Dust". They looked at each other while their jaws dropped. They then wrote some more lyrics for the song and recorded it.
Without Freddie and John, it does not have the same feel, closeness, and friendships. They all performed as if brothers from other mothers. Miss the originals, but still have every album!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So hard to pick a favorite, as they were all great in different ways. Maybe Magic as the album and toss up between Breakthru and Under Pressure as song. But also love I Want To Break Free and These are the days.
a breifer history of queen…
- a guy with a rlly big overbite joins a band
- then said band likes each other so they try and make it big
- then they make a song abt a king but a woman that murders ppl
- so then they’re popular and they decide to write another song that has abt a million beat switches
- now the band is rlly popular and then the dude with the big overbite finds out he likes guys
- so then the band decides they want to make an anthem song so they do and that song becomes very popular as well
- guy with overbite grows mustache
- then the band decides they want to make more “80s” type of music so they do
- guy with overbite tries to do a solo career and he did decent
- so then after more success they decide to peform at some charity concert
- 2 yrs after the very good and popular charity concert the guy with the overbite gets sick🥲
- but then he and the band drop 2 more albums that are rlly good
- guy with the overbite dies of sickness (jokes aside god rest freddie’s soul)
- then the band still does good
- the bass guy leaves
- then 20 yrs later some dude releases a documentary abt the guy with the overbite and the rest of the band
- band is still keeping themselves alive in 2021

I can’t choose my favorite Queen album, so I’m gonna have to go with all of them. From Freddie’s voice and piano to Brian May’s guitar to Roger Taylor’s drumming and high falsetto to John Deacon’s bass, it’s just a great pair.
My Nan loved queen! I was too young to actually like the songs but now I’m older the songs just really hit me in ways words can’t describe. Maybe because of my Nan or maybe because of Freddie’s death. I love queen
That was fantastic. This group seemed to carry mulitiple generations as fans. Since I am a GenXer, and Greatest Hits came out the year I turned 12, and got my first stereo, those are the songs I remember. I recall having to get multiple copies of the album on different media. I think the casette version had "Under Pressure" on it, and not the viynl, or maybe it was the other way around. Under Pressure was not only a great song, it was a great video, back when 90% of videos were just filmed performances. I think the video was comprised of shots from the silent movie "Metropolis". It was a huge MTV hit. I would love to see you cover Oingo Boigo. I think since this band was so regional, many people have only heard one or two tracks from their amazing catalog.
They were definitely ahead of their time with music videos. Thanks for the kind words and for watching
My favorite album is 'A Day At the Races' with my favorite song being 'Drowse'. Thanks for making this video, it was a very clear video and easy to take notes off of.
YES DROWSE SUPREMACY
A VERY PROFESSIONAL AND DETAILED ACCOUNT OF THE BAND QUEEN. DESERVES AN AWARD IN AND OF ITSELF. WELL DONE SIR.
Thank you so much for this INCREDIBLE and extremely accurate interview. I loved it.❤❤❤l
You're such an underrated youtuber
How can a band write so many great songs!?!!?
Why did this video make me cry??? The world may never know,,, they may also never know how much I love Queen. I hope the remaining members are doing amazing. I loved this video
Wow, This is such an excellent and informative video history! Thank you!
I cannot stress enough how much I love your channel. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you so much!
So far in this interview I haven't heard one mistake, which has never happened before. Congratulations on that.❤
My favorite and greatest band of all time Queen.
Wonderful history, informative, to the point and excellently narrated.
Thank you for the video. Sometimes I feel bad for the remaining members of the Queen band but then I think by now they are used to it that no matter what they do or say there will always be people who will keep on criticizing them. They are just normal people like us, they just happened to be talented and loves to make music so they made a living out of it. They became successful and a band that no one else can replace in this lifetime. Freddie Mercury must have told them or made them feel that they should carry on with their lives without him. The movie may not be perfect but I’m one of those who enjoyed it and because of this movie, younger people have became aware of them. Have you seen the people who welcomed them in Korea? Younger generation. The movie and tours introduced them to new fans who are probably watching all the CZcams contents they can find about Queen. Buying albums & merchandise. Let them do whatever they want with their remaining time on earth. If I have a chance I’ll watch their concert even though I know it’s not the same without Freddie.
Favorite song. It’s hard to choose one. It changes depending on my mood. Currently on my repeat mode in CZcams: Jesus, Mustapha Ibrahim, Liar, Cool Cat. When I was down last week I keep on playing Spread Your Wings.

Excellent work sir. Big Queen fan and you covered everything beautifully. Yep, time to subscribe.
Nice video! I've been a huge fan of Queen for years, and had the good fortune to see them play live a half dozen times. Freddie was a great singer and amazing showman.
