Final Fantasy XI is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and with it comes the big announcements of the future of the game...or not so much. There are still some unknowns with what the new REMA weapon process will be, but for the most part there isn't a lot of "new" content to look forward to. So where does that leave me?

I played FFXI from 2004 until around 2009/2010. Really love it - it had such a huge impact on me growing up. I've since been on FFXIV since 1.23, and I really love this game too. I was really hoping they'd have some bigger announcements of FFXI, but at least there are considerations for combining subscription fees for both FFXI and FFXIV which could get me to at least revisit Vana'diel and reminiscence of the world.

  • @the_exegete

The best thing about modern FFXI is that you are not required to form quasi-familial bonds with people and make it an integral part of your life to get anything done. You can play casual and you can take breaks to come back refreshed later. It's a far better game for it's players now in that way. I know lots of people are nostalgic for that type of always-on-your-mind plan-your-every-day-around sort of experience, but if we're honest we gotta admit that it was not healthy for us.
So take some time off. It'll still be here for you when you're ready for more. They might even have that planned 20th anniversary content done by then!

FF11 is a casual "Take a break from other MMO" game for me. When I get bored of FF14 or BDO, I hop onto FF11 for a month or 2 and mess around. Usually I work on Empy weapons or some lofty goal. Hell, it takes me like a year per Empy weapon... I just take it slow and goof around. Taking FF11 too serious ruins FF11

Just started XI a few weeks ago. As someone who doesn't speed myself through content (and honestly I don't have time to play all that much anyway) and was disappointed with FFXIV, I'm having a fantastic time. There are relics of the past that makes the game a chore in parts, but if not rushing through the game, there is so much content to go through and so far all of it seems meaningful, which is something I definitely missed from XVI. As old as XI, it has so much to offer compared to even many new MMOs. I'm not a veteran player, but as a new player there's a lot to offer (heck I thought they stopped adding content a better part of a decade ago)

How you can tell ffxi is superior is you take your time and absorb the content wanting to explore the world and all the things it has to hide. Where ffxiv you rush through most it and don't pay attention than get to the end where you just repeat the same stuff. I enjoy ffxiv bosses and exploring jobs and their play styles but everything else in the game feel like a choir list or very repetitive.

I miss FFXI for the social aspect. My best memories were doing the MSQ with other people who needed it too and spending days just running around the zones to finish them. I find myself trying to recapture that in FFXIV as I like to disconnect from the end game crowd when not raiding and spend more of my time at the far casual end with people still taking in the wonder of the world. They make the game fun in a way few games do now or have done since XI.

Hi there. Nice video. I have been a FFXI player since the NA PS2 release. XI is the MMO I play the most. I did play Phantasy Star 2 online for a short time. I totally agree with what you said about the aspect of discovering new places , new monsters , new equipment etc. - I feel that the Abyssea add-ons is what maid the first "Major" change to the game. It changed how you gained experience and it changed how you "Learned or Didn't Learn" how to play a job to it's fullest. Before Abyssea you couldn't just be in an experience party for hours on end with out even doing any thing to help gain the experience points. I remember getting excited over the "Release" of a new Add-On to the game that brought new places and other stuff to the game. Learning how to get to Valkurm Dunes safely and alive to join an exp party - where every one was "Learning" the jobs. Even acquiring maps was more of an experience then it is now. Getting access to better gear / weapons as you gained ranked in a nations mission's or doing a quest to get something that was "Special" - like "Leaping Boots" or say the "Enhancing Sword" from bune for Rdm. There was a time when what gear you had or didn't have really mattered to Notorious Monster fights - etc. XI needs new replacements for event's like Garrison - etc that would require having the i-level 119+ gears so that your spells and attacks will let you defeat the mob. The selection of what to do today - say do rank missions or exp or do quests or make gil is all but trivial now. Crafting has even gotten less important then it was before. Now that XI is only on pc's - maybe there could a major redo ( enhancement ) to the graphics and maybe even minor changes like allowing more then 7 items to be sold on the AH at any given time - etc.

Don't blame you, wondered where you'd run off to though,
    glad to see your alive.
The 20th was a let down and at the same time wasn't expecting anything huge.
Tried again to play when it was free login, but its just to hard to enjoy the state of retail when private 75 servers exist, it takes a long time to get things done but I personally enjoy the slow grind and exploration.
I've gotten quite alot done that I was never able to do back in the day due to group limitations even with the small population and enjoyed every minute.
Really would of loved a classic server.
Tempted to look into ever quest now though, as I never got to try it.

As someone who's two weeks into playing FFXI for the first time, I appreciate you sharing where you're at and what you're looking for. In part because I've found your videos helpful in acclimating to FFXI, so I was curious, now that I'm actually playing the game myself, what your next video would cover. But mainly I really get where you're coming from, because looking for that sense of newness and a vast world to explore is exactly why I've gotten hooked into XI.
I'd be curious to hear your experience with the new EQ progression servers or LOTRO or whatever you check out next. For me I'm glad to have finally heeded the call to dive into the world of FFXI. There's just something about the FF job system in an mmo that's like a siren song to me.

  • @mills_thecollective34
    @mills_thecollective34 Před 2 lety +9

I played FFXI off and on for the last 10 years, mostly off, while I played FFXIV.
I had struggled to get fully into FFXI, and struggled to "quit" XIV for so long. I had a serious attachment to FFXIV version 1.23b and that was what kept me on XIV so heavily. I took on average about 1 to 3 month breaks from XIV here and there, most of the time returning to XI but I always found myself going back to XIV.
The biggest problem with XIV is exactly what you said about XI. There is literally nothing new since the launch of 2.0. The content cycle is 100% predictable, and it becomes stale to most players at about the 2 year mark. I managed to stick with it for 10 years, and 25,000 hours, but I have hit my cap. I stopped playing XIV progressively back in patch 5.4, and knowingly would not purchase 6.0 Endwalker. I followed through with this, yet continued to play XIV. Finally about 7 months ago I really got attached to XI, and I'm having so much fun.
I had a complete blast with the 20th Anniversary, including getting a total of 3 characters on one account to level 99, and obtaining all jobs level 99 on a single "main" character. After it ended I even went out and bought a laptop and have been dual boxing. I am just having so much fun with XI.
I think the key for me, is I finally came to terms with the reality that XIV 1.23b is gone and never coming back, and it has been so liberating to finally break free of XIV, and enjoy XI. I will continue to appreciate both games, but XI is my home, and I foresee it being just that for a very long time to come.
I have never felt this way about XIV, and XI before, and haven't been gone from XIV for this long without getting even a tiny desire to return.
I know this is a bit much, and strange to others, but I'm a truly devout fan of Final Fantasy, and I have a lot of heart for these games, and its what I enjoy. I just thought I would share that, since it seemed a little in the same vein as the video here.
In the end, what's important is you're enjoying what you're doing and having a good time!

    • @mills_thecollective34
      @mills_thecollective34 Před 2 lety

      @@thatonegeeksite5251 So I have heard!
Although I beat FFXIII-2 near its launch, which was prior to me even playing FFXIV, and of course before XIV 2.0 even launched. (I'm a 1.0 legacy player but I didnt start until 2012.)
I also recently finished the entire FFXI story, and if you're familiar with either of those storylines, its extremely similar to XIV's story, especially in Shadowbringers, which is where I lost interest in XIV, during 5.4.
The 5.0 story (Shadowbringers) is basically the XIII-2 story, and from what I know about 6.0, Endwalker, if you combine XI with XIII-2, you basically get XIV/5.0/6.0 stories.
So honestly I dont feel like i'm even missing out in terms of the story. Sure its XIV specific stuff peppered in, but the overall story is extremely similar. I assume one day I might finish the XIV story, but certainly not any time soon.

I didn’t think there were other people out here that valued 1.23 as much as I did. I like how much was put in XIV, but if only it was with the systems of that era. I still can’t let it go. Everything in XIV has pivoted away from what I can be excited about. Even the Blue Mage limited job- what a massive disappointment. The last nail in the coffin for me was roughly when the WoW refugees caused a sudden spike in XIV’s popularity. Sure it was nice my friends were finally playing this game, but it all felt so backhanded.

Ffxi had so many layers to it to keep you immersed and figure out what you need to do and how you’re gona do it and then getting that feeling of accomplishment after you did those things. You cant just do quests and really level up that way. You have to work together with others to level to get better gear and to become stronger then plan out how and when you are going to do tougher missions like promys or something. I think its just the party system that gave it its flavor. Not like waiting in uldah and then a message for a dungeon pops up then you teleport there, finish then teleport back. You have to make the journey, and that gives you a chance to explore and also keeps you on your toes with avoiding aggro lol maybe the slow walking animation gave that more of an opportunity to shine

Just my 2cents here. I stop playing the game in 2007 and came back last year. The game have change A LOT. Your first 99 will be a little less grind than the old days but after certain key items from the last expansion, your next job will level substantially quicker. Practically no one make parties to level now because you can use some NPCs that SE make in response of the lack of people leveling. All the storyline can be finished solo. For me it was a blast to play again but recently it's starting to lose that magic. Some endgame grinds are excessive and there's no other porpoise apart from the completion or to show off. In my opinion the community still one of the best in comparison from others MMMOs.
At the nostalgia topic: of course you will feel it right at you arrive at the entrance of any of the cities but part of your nostalgia came from the time in your life that you was playing it (after homework, Sunday mornings, school vacations , etc) and that will not come back with the game. So to be honest I could tell you to try it at least for the story and see all those changes but if you want to play the game as it was on the 75 era , go to a private server.
Edit: Forgot to tell you... I didn't get the game from Steam but I have read from some people having problems with FFXIV login from Steam (not sure for FFXI ) so try to goggle it before you get it.

Have you tried New World? It's not an older mmo and it's currently in it's early stages, about 9 months in. It's got a very love hate vibe with the community right now. It has made significant progress since the early days. Much more stable and much more to do. But I'll tell you, for me personally, it's the closest I've had to that feeling of residing in a world. A chill walk through the forest, fishing at a lake, taking the scenery in, just being there, being present. It really for me harkens back to that classic old school mmo feel that alot of people our age miss.

    • @SageAtoreis
      @SageAtoreis Před 2 lety

How is that a struggle? It's the best thing in FFXI, the customization. It's normal in guides you will find sets for everything, but you don't actually need all of that to play the job on high level. It's only listed there for dedicated players, but you can reach like 90% effectiveness of those sets with other gear mixing multijob gear. The problem is that people don't like to go deeper and understand why some gear is good and then using that knowledge to find out alternatives.

@@danny123451 it's an MMORPG game. You either have tons of free time and you don't care how long it takes to progress or you value your time and read and learn a lot how to be extremely efficient and get your gear with minimal time investment. Seems like you want to get gear fast while being inefficient. It's your problem, not the game problem.

    • @darkaero
      @darkaero Před 2 lety

Basically every class has tons of gear sets you should be working on. It's not like you have to have every piece as soon as you hit level cap, they're just sets to work towards. Most guides have a low/mid/high/bis dream set for most of the important sets as well which is helpful for gearing a new job.
Unless you're exclusively joining shout groups, most people don't expect you to have bis gear for your job. And the only reason you see such high expectations for pugs is because the leader is usually on their main job and expects people to be on their level so they don't have issues clearing whatever content they're looking for.
You're always gonna see people who don't want to have to carry a group or go into content with undergeares players who don't know the fight, but if you join a linkshell or find a group of friends you're going to find a lot of people willing to help you, whether it's getting you gear, helping you clear content etc... Ff11 has some of the most helpful people in any mmo imo.
Even the people who you see shouting for people with high level gear would probably help you out once they got once they finish what they're trying to do a lot of the time. I feel like people get intimidated by the requirements people set in order to clear harder content with strangers and assume they'll never be able to get to that level. Just keep doing the content that will get you that next upgrade, grind out things that take a while like REMA, and don't worry about not having perfect gear because as long as you're working towards it you'll eventually get there.
And definitely try to find active linkshells, forming static groups with people who are around the same content level as you on their main or an alt, and befriend helpful people you meet along the way. You'll be surprised how many people are willing to help with content they don't necessarily need anything from on their mains.

I'm with you all the way in how you feel. I love 11 still but lately I have felt the mmorpg is dying or cause we do not have that fresh feel of NEW which many of us hope for a remaster or remake of 11 or new jobs. FF14 is a great game, but it's a temporary home for me as of now and as a mmorpg player and lately with the new reveal of Street fighter 6, I may return to fighting games, that's where I came from and how the only mmorpg who took me away from that was FF11. I honestly don't feel accomplished in FF14 like I felt in FF11 maybe I needed a challenge in some fighting competition and get that feel of accomplishment, however I'm feeling accomplished in retail 11 by getting my mastered job finally and will work on leveling the sub jobs. Lol 😆 it's a grind, but that's what I love to do is grind to achieve a goal and get that feeling of accomplishment.
Yes 14 has hard content but BiS is meaningless in 14 and you don't really need it to get through the content and it changes so frequently as well unlike 11 BiS will get you through hard content and it doesn't feel meaningless to have it. 14's true endgame is glamour unlike 11's endgame is BiS gear.

Having played XI for as long as I have, and done as much as I have... I can honestly say: I just don't understand how anyone can be "done" with this game content-wise.
If you run out of meaningful stuff to do on your main, and run out of interesting quests or missions to do, just go level and gear up another job, or go play through the game on a mule again.
If you've been playing for the past 15-20 years on the same character, you've probably forgotten what it was actually like to go do stuff like rise of the zilart, CoP, nation mission lines, etc.
Heck, go start a character on the lowest pop server.
Between relics, mythics, empyreans, aeonics, soloing NMs, finishing every single quest in the game, leveling every single crafting skill, leveling, JPing, MLing and gearing out every single job, etc. I've had more than enough to keep me busy over the years.
Find or make a list like the Xenoblade Chronicles 100% completion guide.
Go start marking stuff off it.
You'd be amazed by how much content is ACTUALLY in this game. Parts of maps most people have never even seen - items most people don't even know exist - entirely quest lines most people have never done.
And beyond that? Soloing difficult content is a completely different experience. Soloing battlefields on VD on rdm or blu, soloing NMs on sch and nin, soloing events on pup...
    It's a different experience entirely.

Its hard. I have my sub running but i struggle to log into the game.
I look at everquest 1. Darkpaw released the 28th xpac Terror of Luclin this year. They have a beta for next years expansion pack coming out later this year. They have a beta client for a 64 bit client coming out to smooth out client issues. They're working on anticheat to stop some of the botting. They revamped the tutorial for live servers years ago too.
Then i head to XI. I love the game but i see on the site and head over to We are Vana'diel and i read the latest interview. I read the line "Some developers put their career on hold until the 20th and FFXI has a clear trajectory." Clear trajectory? There isn't one now? Going into the 20th, the future isn't planned? Read the AMA and you hear how "We'd like to do an xpac. We'd like to revamp the ui. We'd like to add in a tutorial. We just don't have the budget." Its really hard now after seeing how EQ1 is treated. We hear about future plans but it feels hopeless. There can't be a huge future for a game with a team of 7 planners and not in active development. We hear from Fujito the higher ups tell them "keep working. grow XI" but how are they when they have a shoestring budget thats so small they can't even revamp certain aspects to really attract new people to it.

I actually just started playing for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I have the weirdest love-hate thing with the game. While I find the game interesting, I'm intrigued by the different cutscenes that have hinted at what I can expect content-wise, the laid back nature is nice, the cryptic nonsense in this game, leaving out quest details, the fact that I have to constantly review quest walkthroughs in the wikis pisses me off. Whenever this comes up, people start talking about how its a OMG 20 year old RPG, which is weird, since I'm fairly old and used to play even older RPGs without getting annoyed, its not the game, its by design. I'll continue to play it as I'm told this is how the oldest content is, and that the game feels better further in, but man, the beginning parts can be frustrating. When I was in my teens, I probably would have been ok with a game wasting my time a little, but nowadays time is my most precious resource and this game gives 0 fucks about wasting it. Just when I say "f this game" and decide to stop, some cool cutscene happens and makes me keep going. *sigh*, we'll see!

    FFXI Reqiuem….
    Level 75 cap.
Post 75 era is reworked but still available. Level 99 content is just skill/quest unlocks
    XP Reduction in full effect.
Trusts okay but only beneficial in non party areas./incentivize Party areas with better exp, weapon skill levels (and related functions), and drops(I.E. LL Boots and sub job items dropped in dunes.)
    Full voice acting(Japanese only)
Sounds like a private server but if an “HD” VERSION came out this would be my wishlist(not everyone’s)
I stopped mid TOAU expansion, and it’s just too different trying to play again. I want to experience the game’s new content but I want the masochism it brought before. I started the game at the age of 9 (was ahead of my time) thanks to my older brothers and again felt soo different when I tried to play again at age 27. I miss the danger the game at the appropriate level.
Anyways thanks for the great content as always in keeping FFXI alive for those of us who experienced the “golden age.”

I think XI is an objectively better game than XIV, and i’ll always feel that way.
It was difficult but it was so much more fun and rewarding.
There was so much more customization and uniqueness to how you play.
Early 2000s was a different and magical time and one that i truly will forever miss.
    RIP the good days.

What FFXI has needed -- for over 10 years now -- is an optional client with an overhauled DX11/DX12/Vulkan engine and modernized graphics... and bear with me here... _high-quality voice acting._ It's made enough money after 20 years. SE is just... funneling it elsewhere.
    Edit: ...aaand 4:28 nailed it.

It's amazing to me that people felt let down by the 20th anniversary.
It's amazing because 7 years ago we got dev confirmation that the game was going into maintenance mode. Generally that's the end of a game. If you told me seven years later we would get actual new content I would have said you were nuts.
If you got hyped up for the 20th anniversary on speculation posts on the forum, i don't feel bad for you if you're disappointed.
Always temper your expectations and unless the devs say something specific. Don't assume.

I just came back to ffxi about 2 weeks ago. I didn't realize how much I missed and liked this style of game. As far as older games, if you have never played, you should check out Maple Story, that's also an mmo I've though about going back too. FFXIV imo has become too much wow like for me. Its all about toxic meta and that seems to be it. You must wear x gear and press x button only. You're not allowed to really experiment or play the game if you want to be in groups at all.

So I am one of those cult followers of Lotro. I adore that game, however imo? It has not aged the best. The class design and overall world though? Some of my favorites. Atleast back when I played nothing was like a captain, burglar, or lore master. I miss those bit of oddity in class design that wasn't just a typical class system that most mmos run. Has some of the weirder classes like how ffxi had some odd jobs that didn't fit into one of those "role trinity" things.
Now.. if you are not just in love with tolkien's world? It definitely will not be for you. It has some REALLY good parts, but it has some really bad lows. The game has never done a level squish or any like that.. so the hardest thing is actually getting to the relevant content. If you could get a small group of people to do those leveling group quests/dungeons while leveling through? That would be the best experience and where most my fond members of Lotro exist. I still remember so fondly the mines of moria on release with 5 other friends and just taking on that content. IF anything.. I say try to power through to experience moria. It is the single best mmo zone/expansion zone I have ever seen and will die on this hill.

@@Huntin4GamesChannel Moria will always hold a special place in my heart. When you end up getting to it please take your time. There is alot that it has to offer. Rohan, helms deep and mordor the game opens up and is a bit different. I would say to summarize from release
Angmar: If you want to visit my 1st big raid... try visiting Helegrod in the Misty Mountains.
Moria: The entire zone is filled with content and there are story driven instances that will glue you in on the story. Legendary weapons begin here and now level with you. Highly recommend the barlog fight. Make sure you do the book quest here.
Seige of mirkwood. This is by far the most skippable of the expansions but i did enjoy the little arena instances.
Rohan, deep and morder. These are all similar in many ways but have their own story. Not all content is somethign I will remember but againt those story driven instances are amazing.
The next two expansions I never got to. After morder I felt my time was up.
      My top mmos
      ffxi
      ffxiv
      lotro
      swtor
      eso
in that order. So lotro does hold a small piece in my heart...

Have you thought about OSRS? The game is super active development wise. FF11 was a game I always wanted to play as a kid and decided to finally get around to playing after watching some of your videos. I played for a few months, but I kind of fell post 99 on WAR and WHM. I was also kind of disappointed that the 20th anniversary didn't add much and take the game to the next level. I feel like ff11 is great, but if they smoothed over some rough edges, like inventory, playonline, etc, more people would hop on themselves.

I recently gave a good go with FFXI retail, never played the game before so it was a hurdle. In my first week with it I really really liked it but as time went on I realised that retail FFXI has nothing what the community kept talking about is good about FFXI and thats because I feel Trusts ruin the MMO experience. So I tried Eden and Eden does solve that main issue because Classic FFXI requires you to do anything with another person but my biggest issue is that the gameplay it very slow, leveling is insanely slow (the beginners guide for Eden tells you to farm level 1 mobs until level 10... like seriously?) and overall I think the game is probably amazing but it's just not for me. I'm on an MMO kick still so I resubbed to WoW Classic and I'm enjoying my time with that instead. I was hoping FFXI would had been more meaningful for me and I really did try but WoW's pacing is just so much better, combat is better, roaming the world is better and I'm strictly talking about Classic WoW.

I never understand takes like these. I mean if you didn't care for FFXI that's fine, but if you didn't care for soloing things with your trusts, then why didn't you just do some of the vast variety of party content? It only takes a week or two to reach level 99. After that you can spend the majority of your time in groups, and you have to in order to progress in strength at a reasonable pace. It's just weird to me that so many people insist that a game that is still to this day defined by teaming up with others keeps getting bounced off by people who claim that there's no grouping. There absolutely is.

You played for a lot longer than I did. I briefly returned to see all of the changes that were made associated with the level cap increases, new spells, etc. It was weird to see people leveling up in alliances; no one made traditional parties anymore. They leveled everything up solo with trusts. So many areas were barren with no one even really doing anything in them.
I leveled RNG up to 99 and got some of the better gear for it, but the game became pointless really fast. All my friends were gone altogether except for one, and there wasn't much of anything to look forward to honestly.
Some people tried to persuade me to try a private server with the Lv75 cap, etc. but I was just done permanently after leveling RNG in virtually no time at all.

    *Idk if it's just you.*
Well obviously, there's other people as well with this same mentality- where you guys think of it as just a game to beat.
But if you notice in the comments a lot of people dont think of it as a game. They think of it in the terms of 'Second Life'.
    Yes, there'However,
FFXI recently has had some spikes of people coming back. I think a lot of players have gotten older, matured, experienced enough of the limited things that life too has to offer, and will be coming back.
I myself dont think of it as a game to beat. If I did beat everything I wouldnt be upset or mad about not finding more to do. I think of it- like many people, as a second life. I'd stroll around with friends, help some noobs, and over all just have some fun chilling in Vanediel.
