  • The final fantasy franchise had many incredible entries. Not the least of which is 11, which brought the series into a new era. Becoming the series first online game, as well as introducing the franchise to an entirely new gaming console. This game cemented final fantasy's future, laying the groundwork for future online games, and paying homage to the games that paved the way.
    This is the Final Fantasy 11 Iceberg Explained.
    Icebergs are a collection of trivia, behind the scenes information, rumors and conspiracies, typically ordered from most common to most obscure.

      As a player way back when, I definitely agree that this was a landmark MMO and definitely paved the way for so many improvements to the Genre. No modern MMO would be what it is now if FFXI didn’t bring so much to the table. However, I would argue it’s successor XIV has surpassed it. Gameplay is infinitely smoother with content that fits every players wants and needs, as well as an equally if not more compelling story. I think in many ways XIV is doing things that XI wanted to, but simply could not due to technological limitations. That said, I’m eager to see how the genre continues to evolve. :)

      @@Weenhander I love FFXIV with a passion, but having tried FFXI this last year (free trial), I can see how, in its heyday (that is, when there were tons of people to play with and it was modern, cutting edge graphics and continuing story...instead of NPC trusts...) that it would have been a game I would really have enjoyed. Plenty of things to farm, lots of potential mixes of Jobs, and a more classic, old school MMO feel and system.
      The two things I feel FFXIV lacks are a really open and cohesive world (the zones are often empty, though more full these days, and don't really change or grow and feel kind of like their own maps - it legit took me a conscious effort to figure out where all the maps are in relation to the others, and I still can't QUITE get a full mental map of everything because of the disconnects; Limsa took me a WHILE to get where I wasn't confusing the different areas, namely because South, Central, North, and Double North are called Lower, Middle, Upper, and Outer. I was legit surprised when I finally traveled from Eastern (I think?) Thanalan to South Shroud for the first time, since I didn't realize the two were connected at all. Because the maps are all disconnected and not all of them "feel" like they connect or have rational connections between them (for example, why does East Shroud not have a path to North Shroud anywhere?), it can make the world seem smaller and more disjointed than it actually is, I think.
      And outside of Relic Weapons, there are few real grinds in the game. Which can be great if you want to play casually and take long breaks, but it also can mean when you're bored in lulls and looking for something to do, you might not find that much variety - which isn't to say there aren't things to do, but mostly that comes down to "quests", "PvP", "tomestones" (which you don't need when you're in top gear for the patch or at the end of an expansion), or "Relic Grinds". There are minigames like the Gold Saucer but...eh, not my cup of tea. So there ARE things to do, but there isn't really that farming/grinding itch being scratched outside of Eureka...which, it should be noted, was an attempt to put a little FFXI in FFXIV. :)
      I love FFXIV, but I could see really liking FFXI had I played it in its prime. Heck, I'd play it now if I didn't have trouble mentally justifying spending $15 a month for a dated game I probably wouldn't spend much time in compared to FFXIV. Though if they ever did a joint sub with FFXIV, I'd definitely spend some time poking around in FFXI...

    • @Weenhander
      @Weenhander Před 2 lety +1

      @@SubduedRadical I can see where you are coming from but there is definitely a grind if you want one, and the easiest grind to do is to mount hunt. Good lord, I have spent more time mount hunting than I have in any game ever 🥶

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical Před 2 lety

      @@Weenhander Depends on the mounts and where one is. :)
      I have all Ex mounts except Emerald and Diamond, and while I might get Diamond before EW, Emerald is just a PITA fight that I don't like much, so think I'll come back at 90, lol
      Other than that are PvP fights (I have one of the Garo mounts and do a PvP que most days so that I'll...EVENTUALLY...get my Serpent Warhorse........maybe), there aren't a lot of others to grind that I'm aware of. Partly because Moogle Tomes exist, adding new mounts to easy access, and partly because...I've already maxed all Beast Tribes at this point (though I just finally got around to finishing the ARR ones recently)
      Other than that, I think the only things are combat challenges, like Savages/Ultimates (Ultimates for weapons, not mounts, though...I think), and that's more a "you have 7 friends you want to try hard content with", which isn't what I think of when I think grind for things like this.
      I mean, in this final lull before EW, I've gone back to get some more ARR Relics, since I've only had the one (WHM/Nirvana) and figured I'd like a few more neat glamor options - stats gear BiS is temporary, glamour BiS is eternal - and that they never really go out of date.
      ...I'd forgotten how much I dislike the Book step. I don't mind the grind, I more dislike the FATEs not being up consistently. XD Though it doesn't feel NEARLY as bad as when I did it on WHM. But just a few more and I'll have all the Jobs I'm likely to play (PLD, SCH, SMN) going forward that had an ARR. After that, maybe I'll get the HW MCH (since HW Relics can be done in an afternoon) and then spend some time in Eureka or finish up a few more Bozja ones (I can already finish 2 more, I just have to decide which....or get more parts and finish all of them, lol - it's easy to amass a ton of parts as long as you just keep a Job at each stage and don't turn in the quests, thus filling your inventory with stacks as you do random other things in the game like dungeon runs.)
      So yeah, there are things to do, but...I dunno, I'm greedy - I'd like more. :D Like sometimes I get tired of grinding Relics and don't feel like trying - and failing again - to get Necromancer, etc. :)

    As much as I liked FFXIV: ARR, it just never scratched that itch FFXI left me with. Especially with how the Jobs were designed, and how it rewarded players for playing as an actual team, thanks to Skill Chains and Magic Bursts. I really wish more MMOs could do things similar to what FFXI did, and I'd argue it was ahead of it's time with the overall design of the game; the only game I've found close enough to how FFXI played is probably Guild Wars 2.

Nobody speaks to one another over /say or even /shout, it's only through linkshells that communication exists, Jueno and the three nations are almost empty. There are a scattered few new players, I'd say 90% are endgame players. Once Endwalker releases its last MSQ within its expansion, I guess we'll really see which MMO has the better replay value.

    I want to correct something: Absolute Virtue wasn't truly unkillable, it was just effectively unkillable. Those "exploits" that killed it were actually intended mechanics that got nerfed as even the Devs didn't originally realise how strong it was.
    Allow me to explain a little.
    Absolute virtue has access to multiple job-related special abilities that he could (and even to this day can, to a lesser degree) spam. Virtually all of these abilities can add difficulty in the fight, especially given that AV would still have been one of the hardest fights in the game without this mechanic. What _REALLY_ fucked up almost every strategy back in the day is that you effectively had to zerg him to death, but the gear/coordination required to do that was pretty much unattainable. Even if you had a perfect group, who all had perfect gear, all of them having relics and mythic weapons (which was truly an ordeal for even one person to obtain back then) it is still not clear whether it would be possible through conventional zerging means.
    If you don't play the game, you might wonder what causes this time constraint and makes zerging the only viable strategy. Well, the order it uses special abilities is somewhat random, but one of the abilities, Benediction (the WHM SP) FULLY restores HP and removes all negative status effects. In AV's case it didn't always take him to completely full, but it could erase hours of progress in a literal instant... and wosre _he could theoretically do this as much as he pleases_ because unlike a player, he doesn't have to wait 2 hours to use these abilities again.
    Some methods of killing Absolute Virtue got nerfed out of the game because SE decided that they were "exploits" even though the ability worked exactly as described in-game. Scholar had an ability called Modus Veritas, which would allow them to take a DoT spell, and increase the damage at the cost of duration. This effect could stack, and you could have multiple Scholars use this ability in tandem to get a small 100 damage helix to deal tens of thousands of damage per damage interval, which would allow a group to _POTENTIALLY_ kill AV before it has the chance to recover with Benediction. The funny thing is, this strategy _wasn't even effective every time, it was a crapshoot_ and they still nerfed Modus Veritas into the ground (it has been useless ever since)
    So just technically, he wasn't _literally_ hard-coded to be invincible, rather the fight was just statistically impossible that he'd never use benediction in 30+ hours of fighting.

    Loved the video, that you so much for now passing over this gem of a game!
    I swear, most channels just gloss over it, because it's an "mmorpg," but it is part of the main series.
    It's subscription kept the lights on for SquareEnix when it was struggling, especially during FFXIV 1.0.
    Which I'm happy it did, because FFXIV is a gem which now earns more than enough money for itself.^^
    I remember playing this game waaaay back in the day.
    We had to make sure no one was on the phone, or we would be disconnected.
    This game still stands in my mind as my favourite final fantasy game. Closely followed by VIII and XIV.
    -I remember starting out in Windurst as a tarutaru, since you had to match your race to the starter town to get a starter ring with extra stats on it. And those rings were GOOD! In fact, this game is the only one(please correct me if I'm wrong) that I know of, where gear from lv 7 (Leaping Boots) could be used by much higher level players.
    The game also allowed jobs to use lots of different weapons, so you could really customize your playstyle.
    Not only that, but there was also the subjob system, which meant that you could have half of another job's abilities/magic, in addition to your current one. In my later years, I enjoyed whm/dnc, but pld/rdm was known as the Brick Wall. Sure, some subjob choices meant others wouldn't play with you, but you had the option!
    -Some eerie lore for the spooky season.
    There is a mine in the game, that you enter through Konschant Highlands, called Gusgen mines.
    The mine saw many accidents, and there are now ghosts of children floating around.
    That's what the wiki says, but I could have sworn an npc in the game told me that lots of people took refuge there during the war, and was ambushed and murdered in there. If you go in, head down the corridor in the middle, and descend some stairs, you'll see apparitions. And as a wee child, I was actually spooked by this. They're not targetable, and they fade when you get too close. And once in a while, the old alarm that sounded when danger was close, would sound off, from deep deep inside the mine.
    Now that I'm older, I know that you have to uhhh.. trip the alarm in order to spawn some notorious monsters? I think. I never went down there. I'm no fool!
    -Not sure why FFXIV doesn't, but FFXI has child models for every race. And the tarutaru ones are so tiny and aaaa, so cute!! Tarutaru don't age(npcs inside the game confirms this), but their hair does go grey, so I guess that's one way of telling? Hmm.
    -One of the mechanics(?) in the game was that you had to collect maps. You could either get them from quests, or buy them from vendors with gil. The most notorious map quest that I remember from back in the day, was that of Crawler's Nest. You had to get these pieces of clay, and get imprints from stone monuments that you'd find in lots of different zones. And not having a map in Crawler's Nest was... not recommended. Though even with it, it was tough to find your way around.
    The maps were made by a cartographer, Gwynham Ironheart, and later on his daugther Enid would pick up the mantle.
    -The early version of the game, allowed you to access the Vana'diel Tribune, from inside your moghouse. It would temporarily log you out of the game(kinda? you just had to exit the tribune to be brought back), and you could read stories and articles penned by npcs from the game. There were some pretty cool lore articles about the summoner avatars. ^^
    -I just have one nitpick with the video.
    The galka rebirth lore is in the game. Not sure why you're saying this is fan theory. The Bastok missions, and certain quests in town, confirms this.
    Zeid, the Dark Knight quest-giver in the game, even comments on this:
    "When a Galka senses his death, he sets out on a journey to climb a high mountain and await his final moments. There, guided by a magnificent light, he gains a new body, and with that body climbs down from the mountain. However no one has ever seen this miracle take place. It may just be simple folklore. All we Galka see is one of our brothers setting off on a journey. Then, less than a year later, a new Galka child arrives in our camps." -Zeid
    Another key Galka npc is Gumbah(who is unknowingly the new Talekeeper), who is worried about his friend Werei, who has set off on his Journey of Rebirth.

      The latest voracious resurgence missions go into the lore of the Galka. The mountain they climb is in Valhalla, home of Odin, basically the underworld. the reason only the galka can reincarnate is because many years ago a galkan warrior arrived in Valhalla that impressed Odin himself with his strength, so he rewarded the galkan race with reincarnation. This is revealed by the February 2022 patch for FFXI.

By the time I finally put it down, my BRD was fully kitted with 119 Gjallarhorn, Daurdabla, Carnwenhan, and Mandau. I also had RMEs for other jobs, including Kikoku, Kannagi, Excalibur, Spharai, Verethragna, Caladbolg, and Farsha.
    I think it goes without saying that the game had its hooks in me DEEP. The primary reason I stepped away was just how much of your time you have to sink into the game. It's definitely old school and absolutely DOES NOT respect your time. When I first started at NA release in 2004, I was a barracks rat in the military and could afford to dedicate all my free time to it. 12 years, a wife, and a kid later, that was no longer the case.
    I ended up moving on to FFXIV. It can also be a timesink, but is much more respectful of your time.

If I remember correctly, it involved 2 hours. The players did end up killing AV through an exploit, but a DM forced it not to drop anything. Blahblahblabh, there's a whole long story to it, but it wasn't a troll by the devs. You wouldn't create a drop table for a monster that was unkillable. the game was amazing and hard and demanding AF. played through Rise of Zilart till Seekers of Adoulin, the NM camps, the terrible internet connections from back in the day, the endless waits to find a party depending on the job you wanted to lv up, the level downs, the hard earned gil, the farmings to earn that gil... ofc I have also amazing memories: going SKY & SEA farms with the ls, running away from AV whenever it spawned, Nyzul Isle was so much fun, Dynamis runs with the ls, Promyvion runs with your friends, BCNM, KSNM with the ls, limbus. The chaos on besieged with the lag and 700 ppl in one same area... the hell of Pandemonium Warden in Einherjar... the endless alexandrite grind farms... deffo I couldn't do that again with 35y.o. It was a nice experience and has a place in my heart.

    Man watching this brings back memories. I remember loading it up in 2004 and just immediately sucked in. My first encounter as a noob was someone giving me a linkshell and a few items and tips on the game. Sadly he/she was getting ready to quit the game. I had only known this person for a week or so but seemed so kind and helpful I was legitimately sad about it. Going to Ronfaure and Ghelsba outpost was amazing. The fear you had knowing you could be aggroed walking around, and it wasn't long before you met people to party with and it was one of the easiest games to me to make friends. We had a small group of players that I miss and wish I had kept in touch with. I kept playing FFXI even after I started losing interest because of the players, I would just login to talk.
    Could also be brutal, finding a party could take awhile, though I was a PLD so usually wasn't long for me. But then the time to go somewhere to "camp" and you could de-lvl. But I loved being a PLD in that game because you would come across lower level players being chased and on the brink of death, and I would always try to hop off my Chocobo and save them. Not many games you can do that. It felt good.
    Anyone that see's this comment that played on the Kujata server from 04 to around 07, hello from Gokuja! :)

I bring this up as when I got my Wind Up Mithra minion, it clearly states that the Mithra are the ancient ancestors to the Miqo'te. Other than that, amazing video as always! 🥳

    • @drakewinwest9888
      @drakewinwest9888 Před 2 lety +6

      Pretty sure everything said regarding absolute virtue was wrong. It wasn't unkillable and various groups killed it at first some using a wall hack and some explioting a kraken club weapon. Then the devs removed those. The hint video was released years later after no users had a legit kill, the methods of locking the bosses super abilities worked but mostly only on jpn servers due to the lag making it so that you could not execute the locks in time if you had any lag.

      @@drakewinwest9888 you're correct, it was only possible if you live in Japan, since ALL SERVERS were there and the method for killing it required a low ping. Even living in Japan, it was quite hard.

    • @SirVyre
      @SirVyre Před 2 lety +1

      @@drakewinwest9888 It was stated by Tanaka at one point that the point of bosses like Absolute Virtue and Pandemonium Warden were so that high end players would always have something to aspire to defeat (they weren't supposed to defeat them, as that would remove their purpose).
      This is why every time Absolute Virtue was defeated, the players responsible or the methods used were looked into heavily, and were either removed, stunted, or banned.
      The first kills happened with, "The Wall of Justice" strats, where you pull Absolute Virture all the way north. There's a cliff face there that is roughly max casting range. If BLMs come into that side of the zone through the Crag Dimensional Vortices, they could nuke Absolute Virtue with no fear of reprisal, since he could not move through the wall, and could not cast himself due to the LoS angle preventing casts from AV's side of the wall. They "fixed" that method by causing AV to despawn if pulled too far from his spawn point. Many of the players who defeated it this way were banned.
      The next kills happened with Kraken Club Souleater Zergs, shortly after Absolute Virtue's HP was lowered, due to the Pandemonium Warden 19 hour battle fiasco. This was done to give the illusion that it was beatable within a 2 hour period, but once players did beat it with KC Souleater zerg, they patched AV to give it massive Souleater resistance, a trait no other monster in the game was given until then.
      After that, it was naturally beatable due to level cap raises. They neglected to increase its power, because they were adding in too many things to account for and patch away (and also didn't want the bad PR of an unbeatable boss). I got to kill it myself at the 90 cap in a Perfect Defense zerg. They later added in an i119 version called Warder of Courage, but that version of it is very much beatable.

    The absolute virtue part is wrong, he wasnt supposed to be a troll boss, the developers just overlooked a critical part - network lag. You had to do certain things to it at very specific times (almost 1-5ms).. The devs built the boss fight in a local server with 1ms lag time, but never tried it over an actual internet connection, thus being unbeatable to anyone else but the dev server.

    An intimate relationship with PS2 wasn't what the author meant. It probably meant that the development for FFXI requires PS2 development kits, so much so they use it to this day, even though PS2 version is long gone. They said multiple times that new content might stop coming, because the kits are so old they might break. The game is still profitable, but we don't know util when.
    There was an old excuse for not doing QoL changes for the game: "PS2 limitations". That still applies to this day.
    The only solution would be changing the whole game, starting from scratch, using a new engine. SE probably doesn't see profit in that.

    Still my favorite game to this day, have been playing for over 15 years. It's only on a decline because Square Enix has mostly given up on it as they poured all their resources and time in XIV. Every since years before 1.0 came out, they were siphoning funds from XI to prepare and create XIV. Once 1.0 came out and it was the horrible mess it was, they siphoned all resources from XI including its profits and poured them non-stop into XIV. To this day they neglect XI and focus completely on XIV, its such an unfair and tragic tale. XI deserves better and they could have the potential to have two successful MMOs w/different playstyles but they are so focused on XIV I am sure eventually XI will be on its way out. It really makes me hate XIV, not just because its not the style of gameplay I like (more WOW like), and the SE team for neglecting XI so much.
    For now it still continues, slowly bleeding because the company is neglecting it. Hopefully that changes someday or someone else can do it justice. I just look at XIV and how all the cool kids are streaming and playing it, its getting so much advertising and publicity and money put into it and it makes me wonder if somehow XI could have ended up like that. Oh well, maybe in another time line. Just hope all those XIV players are prepared for when this company does that to their game as the next new MMO is being worked on.
