Sheffield's Frozen Rope 2003 Padres at Braves (partial)

  • Another partial game from 2003. Sheffield hits a low, line-drive home run. The only lower, more clothesline-like Braves homers I can remember came from Claudell (1983) and Gant (1993), but theirs were at Fulton County Stadium with the vacuum tunnels down the line. If the pitch had been a fastball, there might have been a death in the left field bleachers. Anyway, enjoy.

My most enduring memory of Sheffield in Atlanta was one time him hitting a rocket grounder to the left fielder, so hard that it ate him up as if he were playing 3rd. In the early 10's I was working as a valet in Tampa, and one night he pulls up. I park his car, and it reminds me of that play. He comes back out later in the night, and I couldn't stand it anymore. We were alone, so as I pulled his car back up and he was going for the handle I figured I'd never get another opportunity. I told him I'd been a Braves fan my whole life, and one of the craziest things I'd ever seen in a baseball game was that ball he hit, but that I couldn't remember who it was against or who the LF was. Before I could ask him if he happened to remember that one random single he hit in his career, he looks at me, smiles and goes, it was against the Reds, and it was Adam Dunn. We shook hands, and that was it.

Gary Sheffield had one of the most violent swings I have seen in my lifetime. The fact he generated that much power with that swing! Those wrists were quick through the zone!

I’ll never forget after the Braves lost to the Cubs in the NLDS this year, John Smoltz said this was the last best chance the Braves would have to win a World Series with this group. Sad how many pieces they’d lose after 2003, including Sheffield and Maddux

This was hands down my favorite year stopwatch baseball. Sheffield was my favorite player growing up. He was a machine this year. 330 39 132. Monster year. I LOVED this year

I always tried to imitate his stance…then I realized he swung a 34lb bat…you have to be one strong MFer to swing like he did with that heavy of a bat

@@KingJaymo2k11 oh I was obsessed when I was a kid I used to record his games and I would watch in slow motion and pause to see where his hand and knuckle position was and I would literally put money up against anyone that's not Gary Sheffield or someone in his family, to say that I could imitate his stance better than anyone else haha. Now as a 33-year-old it's not as cute as it would have been as a 12-year-old. But it is insanely difficult to actually hit like that. To have the head of the bat almost pointing towards the pitcher as the balls coming out of their hand and then turning around on a 95 mph fastball is absolutely insane. I would have given anything to see stat cast around when he played. Like this ball was absolutely pummeled. Imagine being able to see how fast that came off the bat.

Hands down my favorite year ever to watch baseball. I was 14-15 and a HUGE Sheffield fan. I was able to watch almost every game. I was able to see him hit 39 home runs which besides 2000 when he hit 43 I never saw him hit more in a season (i wasnt watching in 96 when he hit 42). I also got to see him hit 132 rbi and bat 330. And got to see them win 100+ games. Only thing that could have been better would be if they had won it all.

@@thickerconstrictor9037 same bro. I was 16 in 2003 & watched almost every game on TBS. My favorite Braves offensive team. Giles was my favorite player overall, he had a tremendous season. Our 1-8 was the best in baseball. If only we had fared better in the playoffs against the Cubs. I remember being very sad losing that series.
