  • After many months with the campervan in secure storage while I went cruising around the canals on my narrowboat - for which, see / @cruisingthecut - I am now moored for winter and that means I can go and get the van again and begin my plans for what to do with it and where to go over winter.
    If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

    I figured it wouldn't be long before you brought the van back out. Looks like you had a great storage lot. Looks like you have a great set of projects lined up for the winter. I think it is funny that you talk about the exhaust heat on the van heater as byproduct you want to get rid of and all I was thinking about was how can that heat be scavenged back into the van. Good luck, I hope your new marina is as camper van diy friendly as the last one was.

    I must have ‘ found’ you right after you went back to the narrow boat this past year. This is a big surprise to me. I had no idea. I’ve spoke about my motor coach in regards to your narrow boat a few times on your other channel. Guess what? I own a Promaster van. It’s the Fiat van in the EU. I use mine for many things. I put windows and a roof vent in, but keep it stock otherwise. I have camped in mine with a cot, ice cooler, genny, gas stove, a portable air conditioner in the summer or a catalytic heater in the winter, and a portable privy. I don’t always want to take the motor coach out and go alone in my van. I took a 2600 mile trip 3 weeks back. Small world.

    Welcome back. When you published your "The van is finished" VLOG I was sceptical, and commented so at the time. Told you so, it's never finished. Ever. Quite a lot of van builder fit stuff to satisfy the DVLA, get the V5 showing Motorcaravan, then remove stuff to make it how they like. I know someone who borrowed a sliding door with a window for this purpose, but that was a bit extreme.

    Lead batteries (even deep cycle ones) do need a higher charge voltage every so often, in order to avoid sulfation. So it sits on float charge most of the time, and every so often the charge voltage is ramped up to ensure sulfate crystals don't form (and any small ones are driven off, back into the liquid/gel). Modern stand-alone chargers can try and reverse sulfation (by sending spikes of high voltage across the plates in a controlled programmed manner), although I only had moderate when trying this with my own van conversion's starter battery and a Noko Genius mains charger. batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_the_lead_acid_battery might be of interest.

    • @tj4034
      @tj4034 Před 4 lety +5

      I hear that Ctek makes a good charger like that. It periodically goes through a full charge cycle and can also desulfate battery. Jay Leno who has a massive car collection uses Ctek chargers.

      I keep my motorbike constantly linked to an optimate 4 and it starts on the button after 6 months no use. I've also used it to save 2 car batteries that were sulphured up from lockdown lack of use.

      Saw something on another channel which MAY have something to do with your van solar issue that hosed the batteries. It seems Victron MPPT solar controllers don’t like getting hot and when they are subjected to hot conditions the load side turns off. If your van is closed up in storage in conditions that will cause a MAJOR overheat buildup inside this MAY have something to do with the battery issue. Mark Fay MMC Jr. Engineer QMED AS-E / MSC E

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 4 lety

      The batteries seem fine now after I gave them a good recharging at full voltage. I think they didn't like being left on float on the solar only.

    Welcome back! You have just answered every question that I started to ask at the end of your last Cruising the Cut vlog. Well done! I hope you have several good trips in your van this winter and may the clouds part to give you glorious sunshine each time you start a project or take the van out. Good luck!
