- The FULL phone call (part 2). Chelsea star Frank Lampard phoned James O'Brien on LBC 97.3 to defend himself after being accused of letting down his kids.
Elen Rives was reported as claiming that the England midfielder was living in his £8.5m home whilst she was in a small flat with the couple's two young children.

One of the most honest, intelligent, assertive persons. Not qualities you find often among football players of that type of fame and profile. Always respected Frank, I do even more after this. United fan since 97.

Then got him to change the topic of the entire show after he was made aware of how inappropriate it was to be talking about his family on the anniversary of his mums death. I’d say he got firmly put back in his little place.

I agree. I think that he has improved since this though. He learnt his lesson here to reach out to people to give their side of the story before commenting on it. James had the lazy excuse of saying I have seen it written in the tabloids so I thought it was worth discussing as it might have some truth to it. At least reach out to the guy first to get his side of the story. It seems both his fact checking and reaching out to the people discussed has improved in modern times.

Speaking about the anniversary of the death of Lampard's mum 'im unlikely to keep a record of that in my desktop diary am i.' The guy can't help himself with the sarcastic comments can he - its like verbal diarrhoea.
They both took care of that with dignity I think. O'Brien's doing his job and explained that carefully. And apologised for the poor timing. And Lampard explained his personal situation sincerely and clearly.

Honestly, I know it’s a controversial take, but I respect them both here. Let’s not forget James gave a lot of air time to a person he was directly talking about who phoned in completely out of the blue. Most journalists wouldn’t be able to handle this as graciously as he did. The call ended on good terms, Frank was given a proper opportunity to convey his perspective and James apologised for part of what he said.
When I listened to this on radio when it was live I was shouting at the radio 'go on Frank!' like that boxing commentator with Frank Bruno that time. much respect. You would never in a million years believe Frank Lampard has 11 GCSEs would you!

Was never a huge fan of Lampards until i heard this, utter legend sticking up for himself and did it in a good way, as the presenter said he didnt hire a load of lawyers and shit, just phoned up and laid into the bloke. Very intelligent by the sounds of it.

Lack of intelligence - no. They’re mainly working class and have strong regional accents and a lot of people, because of the class system, believe that a middle class accent denotes intelligence (aka Rugby players) and a regional accent denotes ignorance. Not so.
