  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at what appears to be a revival of a controversy before the existence of my channel. Resident Evil 5 is a game mired in controversy over it's depiction of Africa. IGN seems to believe it most certainly can't be produced again. Are they in the right? Let's find out! Thanks for watching!

  • @geofff.3343
    @geofff.3343 Před 3 měsíci +201

    Okay, so the plot in a nutshell of RE5 is:
    Wesker gets access to Plagas from Ada Wong by some means. He uses Tricel to develop both Plagas Type 2 and Uruboros. Uruboros is not a Plagas strain, it is actually a Progenitor strain. The Progenitor Virus is the mother virus to the T, G, and T-Veronica viruses. It comes from a flower called the Stairway to the Sun which exists in the region of West Africa the game takes place in. Wesker needed a base sample. In a certain subset of the human population consuming this flower grants what are believed to be godlike superhuman abilities. Wesker makes this Uruboros with the goal of spreading it across the whole world and letting the weak be culled leaving the fortunate. The vast majority of people would become goopy monsters but like 1% would become basically the next stage in human evolution, of which Wesker thought himself one of them and would rule over the new world order as a god. If anyone's the uncomfortable allegory in this game its Wesker, the bad guy.
    The sad truth is Chris is there to basically clean up something unsalvageable at this point, and there are lots of African BSAA members so it's just weirdly unhinged shallow-reading of the material. Chris doesn't see himself as better. He sees himself as woefully behind the eight ball and just trying to stop the world from getting killed by a WHITE BLONDE MAN.

    • @SuperSmashDolls
      @SuperSmashDolls Před 3 měsíci +15

      Hot take: if a shallow read can make people think your game is racist, you're a bad writer.
      Like, I get the argument that Sheva is one of the two protagonists and the game has lots of lore about why we're in Africa and how you're really trying to stop some guy who's trying to do a fascism. The problem is that *nobody cares about RE lore* enough to do the deep read required to actually arrive at that conclusion. What they see is "fun zombie game", they play it, they get to the level where you shoot up an entire African tribe, it makes the (presumably white) gamer feel uncomfortable, they stop playing, and they call the game racist, which isn't accurate to the source material but it *is* accurate to how they read it.
      If a writer wants their work to be interpreted a particular way, they need to actually ensure they put all the information necessary to reach that conclusion right in front of the player. It can't be skippable lore.

    • @abaddon_9941
      @abaddon_9941 Před 3 měsíci +25

      Heavily disagree, you can argue you can skip lore of any videogame ever by skipping it cutscenes, people also hate being forced on lore. RE's never strong point was on lore aspects.
      Put one and two together seeing how villagers force in first cutscene on the parasite and you will see aren't themselves, and they execute brutally the butcher that gives your equipment. he's african and agent part of bsaa group.
      @@SuperSmashDolls
      Elden Ring and souls games also let people skip 90% of lore and ppl like to discuss it make their own thoughts.
      Horror games also have always done extra lore on diaries, extra document notes, for those who enjoy it. RE4 remake is no expection, you can read documents and notes on las plagas, the regenerators and other mutants is all optional.
      This just goes to show how some people lack culture and put 0 seconds thoughts. for a japanese game back in 2009 its well done. If you are unwillingly to do any research, look up thats also on you part of the game. its like arguing a book or a media is bad without wanting to understand it and just first thoughts.
      I guess God Of War is just Kratos mindless killing people. Nier automata is just a dumb robot game. You can simplify and call any game bad writing by just first thoughts. curiosity and knowledge is what can drive humans.

    • @youkofoxy
      @youkofoxy Před 3 měsíci +23

      @@SuperSmashDollsNo you do not need to read, to get that, just to stop and watch some cutscenes.
      The only part one needs to read the files, is to understand what exactly happened.
      And honestly, why can we not have nuance and unreliable narrative any more? not that RE5 use those, it quite straight to the point.
      Heck, most of the actually bad people are not black, except one and is clear why (conspiracy).

    • @geofff.3343
      @geofff.3343 Před 3 měsíci +24

      @@SuperSmashDolls You... you know I didn't mean a literal read of the material. I meant read as in take in information. Like, "I read the room." or "I got a read on the guy."
      While you do have to go into the files a bit to learn some specifics like exactly what Wesker did, the plot beats are delivered via cutscenes.
      Hotter take: If you're just going to skip engaging with the narrative at all, don't espouse an opinion on the subtext of the narrative.

    As an East African, I was absolutely excited to see my language in a game franchise that I grew up playing. Literally, everyone at our school knew RE5 and loved it. Hearing the zombies speak swahili so accurately was soooo cool.
    But it's sorta weird how these Western media outlets assume our stance for us. Saying that the game has a racist undertone and is offensive to Africans. It's not... we can do the talking for ourselves if it was.
    I kinda hate it when other non-related groups take it upon themselves to practice virtue signalling like it's their duty to speak for others.
    I can guarantee none of these people making a fuss about the game have known an African or even been to Africa.
    EDIT: Now that I think about it, the Africans depicted in the game were the racist ones lmao. You could hear most of them snarl and spout verbal abuse at Chris at times. Calling him words like "nguruwe mmarekani" which translates to "american pig". I found this hilariously edgy lmfao.

Like, come on: corporation founded & run by rich white people using their wealth and position of power over impoverished people to torture and (literally) dehumanize them? It's an easy connection to make.

  • @korstmahler
    @korstmahler Před 3 měsíci +27

    I don't think the parasite 'regresses' anything about them as much as it sends it's victims mad in their own way.
    The first area you see affected is also engaging in a social-gathering-hype behaviour, they're ganging up and demonstrating against something, (I always suspected it was Tricell)
    The isolated villagers were likely maintaining their culture with festival gatherings regularly, in the same way many places around the world do.
    The Army infected were already part of a tight-knit group.
    Later BOWs also seem to have weird family or ingroup-outgroup structures of behaviour too, so I wonder if Umbrella were playing with the chemicals that reinforce familial or social bonds among infected deliberately.

They did a complete 180 and removed Shiva and the African continent silhouette from the cover and put Chris & Jill on it instead. And then there was the bonus outfits, Shiva in tribal Zulu gear wasn't a big deal. However, considering how capcom has taken a flaming dump on each and every ONE of the female outfits for each remake, it won't be a shock that it will be censored. **And spare me about 'mods', these games are made to move consoles first and foremost meeting DEI guidelines PC is a after thought.

      I mentioned the same reason time and time again on this channel, among others who delved into the topic! My capadres at Just Cause Entertainment are aware the reasons are ridiculous, and Resident Evil 5 was a product of it's time(considering RE4's success resulting with a wave of third-person shooters with slight horror themes that are action-based, such as Dead Space, and Gears of War), and the true reason why RE5 could be difficult to process into a remake is it's over-reliance on co-op.

    Resident Evil Lore Expert here:
    1st: There actually is lore for the blonde woman, however it's not in the game. There was promotional material in the form of a blog from the perspective of a man living in Kijuju, who mentions the woman.
    2nd: Las Plagas isn't a virus, it's a parasite.
    3rd: The C-virus was not developed by Wesker, but rather by Derek Simmons with the help of a scientist by the name of Carla Radames for the purpose of cloning Ada Wong (Simmons never got over her rejecting him) and ensuring a sort of "world order" in the name of an Illuminati type group. While some of the data developed from Plagas helped with the development of the C-virus, Plagas itself is not present in RE6. Unlike Plagas, which are administered by injecting an egg or shoving a Plaga into someone's mouth, C-virus is only spread in a gaseous form. The first use of it was in a manga called Marhawa Desire, which was intended to be a prequel to 6.
    4th: Kirk, or Hat Trick, is an amazing pilot, he gave Jill the awesome present of a rocket launcher in Revelations so she could shoot an infected whale.
    5th: I have not heard anyone complain about when Leon and Krauser killed zombie hispanics created by a cartel leader in Darkside Chronicles, at least not to this degree.

Same thing is happening to the villagers in Africa being infected with what’s actually a new type of plaga that is NOT the same as the one you encounter in the beginning of the game which I feel makes a key difference, its just using a different form of cermonial attributes from that culture which would now be the war paint, masks and traditional clothing.

    I agree with everything Muta said in this video, however, I would argue that RE Revelations brought the game back to survival horror kinda before RE7 did. It was still pretty action oriented but definitely went back to horror and more survival aspects

    I totally agree with the subtitle thought, this game should be rewritten, not remade. A survival horror / action version of re5. re2 3 4 got retold as they were basically. I wonder if they would come out with something unexpected instead of 5, maybe code veronica or revelations? imagine that. it's that or making a military shooter in 2025 i guess

    You guys remember when IGN said the MW reboot was the “most divisive game of E3 2019”? That’s arguably got to be the biggest showcase of how much of a circus those guys are for me 💀

    The tribe in Re5 is different from normal African tribes though, they're actually one of the first people to come across the "Progenitor Virus" which is basically a predecessor to the Zombie virus in Re games, I think it comes from a flower and the tribes always use it so their culture is based on that. 17:12

      It's the same virus that's to blame for Wesker becoming a super human bad ass. Because it already existed in his system when the Tyrant impaled and infected him the virus didn't really take over his cells, it just augmented them. It's still unclear whether that effect was intentional or not because Wesker was one of many clones infected with the Progenitor virus. If I remember right he's the only one who survived it.
