This show is nothing better than the 2010 movie. Bad, baaaaaaaddddddddd writing. Just like the 2010 ATLA movie. And what hurt even more is the fact that Gordon Cormier is a bad actor, no acting talent at all.
But this show is not worse than the 2010 movie either. ATLA netflix and 2010 ATLA are on the same level

The thing about fans is that we want to see things same as the cartoons. We all have favorite parts and they cant show it all. If its done 1:1 then whats to watch? What i love abt the changes is that its like watching it for the first time all over again. Loving it for the first time again. Im a huuuge fan too but what i realized is that for one to enjoy this u have to take it in as it plays out instead of expecting to see ur own vision of the show. Amazing visuals, casting, costume design, and yes its not scene for scene or word for word as the original, but as a die-hard fan since the beginning, it's off to an AMAZING start. i think it makes a lot more sense that remembering gyatso's love for him is what brings him out of his rage rather than katara w whom he doesn't really yet have a bond.
aang using the avatar state to escape zuko would have been redundant as he goes into the avatar state at the southern air temple not even five minutes later. it made sense in the cartoon bc the avatar state was the climax of two separate episodes.
changing "character moments" is what you should expect in any worthwhile adaptation. you'll get different character moments, the show will set different things up for later payoffs. you have to keep an open mind. the cartoon isn't going anywhere.
i agree that katara intercepting zuko's last blast didn't work, doesn't make sense. it was also unclear how aang was released, don't think that scene worked either.

  • @bbwayne11
    @bbwayne11 Před 4 měsíci +8

It's an adaptation first off, not a recreation. The avatar state is meant to be scary and not understood. To show Aang go avatar on the ship and be in control is not logical, but for a cartoon it works.

Regarding Blake's issue with Aang not going into the Avatar State while escaping the ship, I think they just wanted to save it for the end at the temple, otherwise it would've felt repetitive. Aang's relationship with Gyatso, at the time, was more important than his relationship with Katara, who's so far a stranger to him. Also, in this version, they had a different use for Katara's little plead with Aang...which I can't say was handled effectively.

  • @solonec.4285

I think people are being a bit too harsh on Blake for being upset about some scenes/lines that are missing. It's not because he expects an 1:1 adaption. It's because there are a couple key show moments that each fan want to see. I think any avid fan of Avatar can relate to that feeling of disappointment when some of your favorite scenes/lines get skipped over. Unfortunately, those key moments aren't the same for every fan so I understand and I'm sure Blake understands that we have to accept that they may skip over those moments that may be personally meaningful/significant. I have my own such moments too: Aang saying "come closer" like he has something important to say and then asking "will you go penguin sledding with me" - I love that intro for him and I feel like it just captures him perfectly; Instead of Sokka saying, "let's go rescue that weird kid", he says, "let's go rescue your boyfriend", Katara interjects, "he's not my boyfriend-", and Sokka interrupts, "whatever". That exchange just screams older brother-younger sister vibes. Zuko's training sequence where Zuko demands more advanced training and ends with Iroh saying, "but first, I must finish my roast duck"; finally, Katara telling Aang that she and Sokka are his new family and Sokka agreeing, "yeah, we're not going to let anything happen to you" (even if Katara didn't calm Aang down, she could've still said it afterwards).
Anyway, I for one appreciate that Blake shares the scenes from the original that the adaptation skips that are personally meaningful to him because it's a real moment of raw emotion that I'm sure many Avatar fans can relate to because even if our personal meaningful scenes may be different, they sentiment is the same.

I binged NATLA (Netflix's Avatar the Last Airbender) yesterday and if I had to give it a rating, I'd give it a 8/9 out of 10. I really like what they did with this show. I like that they made some changes, combined some things and cleaned others up a little, and I feel like they did it while still honoring the source material. They did their own thing with it - and I love that! I like that they didn't just do a shot by shot remake of the cartoon. I think the intended audience are adults who grew up with the show or have otherwise watched the show... so it makes since to give it a fresh spin so that we still have a little mystery in what comes next. We get to ask, what are they going to do with this or with that? How are they going to handle this? What changes are they going to make to that? It allows us to get newly invested in a story that many of us probably know by heart. I liked the vast majority of the choices they made in this. There are just two things that I DID NOT like --- but those haven't come up yet so I'll avoid mentioning them. Otherwise, it was a strong season! And a strong opening! NATLA has great pacing and is grounded in realism.
I was a little nervous when I found out that the show was cutting Sokka's misogyny and his growth and development to overcome that... but I don't think that's necessarily needed for his arc in NATLA. He still has to learn how to be a man - that his life and his choices are his own and I don't think misogyny is a necessary part of that development or of that journey into adulthood. I think it would have been poignant if they had included it --- especially given the hold creators like Andrew Tate have over the minds of young men these days, but I think it's ok that they didn't go that route.
39:44 I didn't think much about the choice to forgo Aang's Avatar state in the escape scene. I think it probably was a decision based on pacing. Maybe they didn't want to overuse the Avatar state in the first episode. Or maybe they chose to empower Katara in this moment instead.
I think it was probably just a moment of pure adrenaline. (and the water looked like it was moving upward so it probably came from the ocean.) She wasn't thinking about what to do or how to do it - so she did it. I don't know if any of you have played sports - but that's what can happen in athletics too... you shut your brain off and let your body take over. My best plays in softball and my best dance performances were in these moments. I mean, I once reacted on pure instinct when I was in the outfield and the ball was coming my way. Without even thinking about it, my arm quickly and smoothly stretched out to the side and I caught it. It took me like 15 seconds to realize what I had done. And I had similar moments when I played basketball and football. I think it was probably similar to that.... instinct, adrenaline, and muscle memory.
40:01 as some others have said, I think it's smart to have Aang's memories of Gyatso calm him instead of Katara. I mean, they JUST met. They have no bond and no real chemistry yet. I really think this show is aiming for a more grounded approach to the story - and having it be some of Gyatso's last words to him - words of encouragement and love - makes sense to me. He was in pain because of the loss of Gyatso - then healed by remembering that love.

I swear people have no concept of how wildly different the method of media used to tell the story: live action of eight 40+min episodes that's released as a whole VS a cartoon of 20 episodes of 20+ mins each released weekly. Two very different methods that require unique methods of execution. Also people forget how exposition heavy the cartoon actually was and how the cartoon hinted and implied a lot of heavy concepts for a kids show, but couldn't actually show or explain them in the detail required to flesh them out because it was precisely made for a kids network television company.
The show is streamlining the themes, events while explicitly delving into the ideas that the cartoon only elaborated on in vague and unexplicot ways. Again because it was made for 16 and younger kids, not 12 year old to older people which this show is rated for. TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT MEDIUMS.
The actor who plays Iroh had the right idea when he said that it is not a copy, nor a remake, but a REMIX because he understood the medium of the story (form of media used) is inherent to its method of portrayal.
Again people wildly overestimate the cartoons handling of the more mature concepts - the fact they were even alluded to or just plainly part of the narrative was enough to warrant the fact it effectively delves into those things because ot was for kids explicitly and how it had to exposition dump in different ways because it was for children. The nostalgia simping and hindsight 20/20 musings of the show that everyone has had for 20+ years is blinding everyone to the extremely creative adaptation.
It is not as good as the cartoon, but it isn't wholly trash TV. If we, as geeks and nerds, can mostly agree that the Revenge of the Sith is a masterpiece despite its obvious flaws in dialogue and story telling, then we can at least try to appreciate the live action adaptation of our beloved ATLA. The cast and crew obviously have love for the original work. That being said, it could have been another Witcher fiasco. The showrunners had no love fpr the source material. The makers of NATLA simply do not have that same contempt for their own source material.

The reason Aang didn't go into the avatar state on Zuko's ship is because the showrunners in an interview said that they wanted to highlight the importance and integrity of the power that comes with going into the Avatar state so they decided not to take that power for granted and show minimal use of the Avatar state only when Aang is in actual danger. Also, I disagree with Blake because in the anime, it is Katara who brings Aang out of the Avatar State when he discovers the wreckage at the air temple. Otherwise, it was a fun reaction.

... which is the real problem here. You're right this is in fact sea level water bent from a hundred feet above on a sky bison. How powerful did she become in a matter of hours? She can bend water from so far away? Over the top imo if we just saw her happy about forming a ball from a puddle of water. But I guess it's their choice. They wanted to give her a hero moment. I mean it looked cool ngl but whoa ... That's a little op for any waterbender

I just need to comment on this, I understand you're irked at some of the changes that were made to the series, however it needs to be said that they can only take so much from the animated series and put it into this new adaptation. Hence why they added the prelude of fire lord Sozin, the attack on the air nomads, and the changes to certain scenes. It cannot be made scene from scene, from animated to live action and same with dialogue. Not to sound negative because you guys are awesome, but coming into this you should have known there would be some changes whether you liked them or not.

If you want it to be exactly like the cartoon then watch the cartoon. I thought that this show could have used a couple more episodes when adapting this season as 8 made some things a bit rushed, but overall it isn't bad. I feel the same way when a movie or show is based on a book or comic and it's not exactly like the book, then read the book. Peter Jackson changed a lot of things when he made Lord of the Rings, but the movies were better than if it had been exactly like the books.

They nailed this episode and the show. Memory elevates material. The animated series is awesome. But you cannot tell the story the same in live action. And you shouldn't. You can't even play the characters the same, because they're people and not cartoons in their performances. All you can ask in a live action adaptation is that they get the spirit of the show and characters correct. Because things don't translate medium to medium. It's like comics man. Different artists and different writers can tell a similar story in different ways. But if you nail the hearts of the characters you can be successful. This show did it. Just like One Piece did. They certainly didn't go scene for scene there, but Luffy was Luffy and you felt the friendship. And that was what made it successful. This show is doing the same. Everything else is just noise and theft of joy, as this show stands on its own.

I suggest just stopping here if you hated it that much.
I respect these are your honest opinions even if I disagree. But I still think the level of your negativity was wayyyy overboard. If someone didn’t know better they’d think they completely changed the story and characters in some huge catastrophic way that completely ruins everything with the way you were going on. I get having some reservations and a few negative things to say but this reaction just didn’t come off very good if I’m being honest.
Having just watched the animated series with my niece here’s what changed. In the children’s cartoon Aang’s escape is much longer and gets into a fight with Zuko who knocks him overboard. Aang goes into the Avatar state lifting himself out of the water back onto the deck where Katara and Sokka have just landed with Appa. Katara attacks all the soldiers and then freezes them in place so they can board Appa and escape. And Aang is the one who deflects that single fireball attack.
These changes I personally think are justified for a few different reasons. For one it allows for the tension to build up to a face off with Zuko more making it more important and impactful later considering we won’t have the same amount of time with as many scenes to build up to a tense face off so I think saving that for later actually makes sense.
Then on top of that for Katara’s instincts kicking in and creating a wave to stop a single fireball to me is more believable than taking out every single Fire Nation warrior with a single attack and freezing them in place considering this is going to be a more sped up version of the story and they just found Aang maybe hours ago.
This is the only thing I can see actually having some criticism for and questioning a bit but I still don’t think it was all that serious to deserve such the level of negativity that took place in this reaction.
Last but most importantly I think these changes make sense for this version of the story because it cuts out Aang going into the Avatar state yet again in the first episode of the show for a total of 3 avatar states. Because the Avatar state is something Aang is supposed to struggle with and only really be able to access when his emotions and stress levels are at an all time high until he masters them much much later in the series.
And a similar thing can be said about his water bending it takes quite a bit of training and time for him to be able to access it and control it.
So him just easily going into the Avatar state and all of sudden being a better water bender than Katara does a couple of things. It keeps the importance of his training because if he just magically becomes an OP Waterbender episode 1 there wouldn’t be much of a point to him having to master the elements.
Also it gives the scene earlier in the episode a bit of pay off with Katara unlocking her powers a bit more with that short training scene with Aang. AND people would complain if Aang already went into the Avatar state 3 times and became a better water bender than Katara already in the first episode which kind of defeats the purpose of the entire story ahead because they combined 3.5 episodes into one episode.
Which brings me to my original point…I honestly think if this minor of a thing triggered you THAT much then I suggest don’t continue to watch it because this is not going to be shot for shot recreation it is an adaptation that is sped up and combined to be told over the course of 2-3 seasons of 8-10 episodes each.
Sorry for such a long comment but you said a lot and I felt your negativity deserved a response.

It's easier to draw cartoons to look a certain way and call their age something else, but it's harder to hide that shit with people when puberty is involved.

As one of the Avatar the last airbender fans, I don't want to break the show immersion by nitpicking and whining because i couldn't watch everything from the cartoon in the live action ADAPTATION, And one solution, if i want to see everything, it is easy, i can just back watching the TV animation series.( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)b

It’s significantly better than the movie that shall not be named. I think it’s fine for the fans to point out the pacing issue so that they can fix it for the later seasons. Book one probably has the most side quest/filer episodes so it’s not as important. But they have to get the pacing right for book two and three.

It seems they were doing it just to give a movie vibe to it. I say clickbait!
There is an unanswered question for me that they should resolve with Sozin & the comet and that could be better to do it: how did Sozin know that the comet would enhance the Firebenders' power???
It woud be a better way to add a sequence like this instead of some Earthbender shenanigans, don't you think?
For the Air Nomad introduction, Aang's introduction with him flying around, was meh for me.
If they really wanted to do something, give us airball with the students and see more of the flying bisons & lemurs would be more iconic!
The rest of the episode should follow the 2 first episodes of the cartoon with some adaptation to the live action format.

For me the problem is the way it looks. It's like they're in theater costumes it's too goofy.

Eh, I guess I kind of felt that way in a few scenes. But I think overall the costumes are really good. & the visuals are good overall.

You need to separate a cartoon from a live action. They cannot and will not make a 1 to 1 from cartoon to live action. You closed mindedness will stop you from really liking this show.

Agreed. And sadly, if enough closed-minded fans screech loudly enough, we might as well kiss a second season goodbye, yet AGAIN being denied any more Avatar beyond where both this Netflix version and the subpar theatrical (which is FAR more deserving of criticism) one left off. Why would any studio consider it profitable if all anyone ever wants is exact replicas? It'll sit collecting dust yet again for God knows how long before they try again, if at all. As far as I'm concerned, if the spirit of a story remains intact, even despite changes, then it should be given a proper chance, imo.
