So yeah. It is pretty good to say the least. I found myself really enjoying the slight changes made to the story and I loved the way this live action show felt much heavier to begin with than the animated show. I am yet to watch the rest of the season but it's off to a good start. Enjoy :)

One thing I love about the new intro is that it shows just how powerful and formidable the Air Nomads actually were, which is something we never really got to see in the Original Series (since Aang, while an Airbending Master, is still a child and is focused on mastering the other elements throughout).
But yeah, they're such beasts that even Sozin has to admit, "You may have prevailed on another night..." And while that line is added in this adaptation, it's backed up even in the Original Series by his choice to attack the Air Nomads only with the aid of the comet.

I actually love the immediate attraction Suki and Sokka have towards each other. Neither of them have ever left their villages, so this is likely the first time they are seeing anyone their age that they didnt grow up with. A crush is pretty normal in those circumstances. What i want is to see how it develops beyond just a crush of convenience

Nah it's forced. In the original there were plenty of guys suki's age in her village so the attraction meant more. Here it's just a forced attraction. Her attraction to Sokka in the original was from his personality and willingness to take accountability mostly. That means more than attraction to looks.

We heard a lot about the changes to Sokka’s character and how his misogyny specifically was taken away. But I mean I can still kinda see it. He tells Katara she should be in the village seeing to her duties rather than water bending. And when Suki shows up in the woods he tells her he can “teach her the basics” with his boomerang. It’s more subtle than in the cartoon but I think more realistic

As for the changes, to me most of them range from “I don’t mind” to “I actually like it this way a little better.” Imo it’s like all of those Cinderella adaptations: they kept the important parts the same, and then played around with a lot of the finer details to create their own version of a familiar story. We don't know much in that vein in the original ATLA, of who Zuko is on top of everything else, just who he is as a person. We know he's a skilled swordsman, but here, we learn that he's a rather decent illustrator. Either something his mom honed and encouraged, or something he developed in the past 3y.

I actually thought this connection with Suki and Sokka was much more natural and even endearing. Being isolated from so much of the world her whole life and focusing all her energy on being a Kyoshi Warrior means she has little experience even being around a boy so on one hand shes intrigued, on another she finds herself attracted to him. Being so isolated and focused however means that she has no idea how to flirt so when she sees that Sokka is interested in warrior culture and her training, she uses that, the main thing she understands, as a way to connect with him and clumsily flirts such as their first sparring session.

Absolutely agree that the animated show vs the film is such a high bar/low bar dichotomy. I think the show is great for what it is - a show created today, where seasons of television have essentially become 8-hour long films. It's not going to have the same narrative beats as the animated series, because it's a different medium and TV has changed so much since the days of 20+ episode season arcs.

I’m halfway through the season and I can see how it’s a mixed bag. But I don’t agree with the people saying this is trash. I knew going into it that they were changing things, which helped me manage my expectations better. I do agree with the person who said that it helps to think of this live action version as taking place in a different universe. It means you can separate it more from the animated version. Nothing could ever beat the original, but I’m at least entertained by what I’ve seen so far. It’s not perfect, but I can see what they’re trying to do. My hope is they can learn from the critiques and do better if they get seasons 2 and 3. There’s potential here. The execution right now just misses the mark.

I personally think it’s a refreshing take on the beloved series. The VFX stands out for the most part, contributing to the immersive world-building. The inventive meshing of storylines adds a unique flavor, although the kids' acting falls slightly short of the standard set by shows like Stranger Things. Despite this, it remains serviceable. Zuko and Iroh steal the spotlight with compelling performances, making them the standout characters. The incorporation of the original OST enhances the nostalgia, likely contributing to my overall enjoyment of the series.

I feel so insane for actually liking the show BECAUSE IT IS NOT BAD AT ALL. I swear, I thought I was gonna have a good time with the fans because we can have a 'reunion' but a lot of people just hating on it not being a 1:1 adaptation with cosplayers that resemble characters... It's so tiring and really sad.
I never went into the live action thinking it SHOULD be this, they SHOULD look like that but it's pretty obvious that despite the flaws, this adaptation was made with love and care. To compare it to M Nights ONG, and say they are equal in quality... I feel so gaslighted into thinking it is bad. And sadly, this will spread like wild fire. I feel 80% who were mad about this adaptation are shallow fans or not fans at all because they came into this hating it. So of course theyd have something to complain about.
It's so bizarre that some of us who have loved this series for more than a decade actually appreciate this attempt by netflix(which is a respectable adaptation), but people who are apparently "experts" bandwagon on shitting on it.

I gotta say I wasn't too excited about the first half of the first episode. The long exposition intro, the pacing, the Peter Pan flying. Would have preferred to see Aangs backstory in flashbacks as he's resting with the water tribe.
But I got over it. It's absolutely stunning. The longer backstory put more emphasis on the devastating ending of episode 1. I love the more realistic and mature approach, the portrayed trauma of war. So many things were absolutely beautiful and right and enjoyable 😊

I came into it with low expectations, I’ve watched two episodes and so far I think everything is pretty much fine except the writing. I love the set design, the fight choreography is good, cgi is impressive considering how much they had to use, casting is good, but the most important thing really fell short. It’s like the writers and director missed the lesson on show don’t tell. All the characters say exactly how they feel, drop buckets of poorly entwined exposition, and talk like they’re reading from a script. Sometimes I can’t tell if they’re acting is also bad or it’s solely the script. Aang’s acting especially needs improvement, but he does capture the character so much better than the movie. Either nobody is showing enough emotion, or their emotions come on and off like a light switch. I hope the creators receive the needed criticism about their writing and improve in coming seasons.

I wouldn't have even minded how much they seemed to adapt to the shorter runtime in similar or even the same ways as the movie, whatever, but like it's not even a particularly spectacular show in general. Season 1 set up the story really well, but everything interesting in the series happens in season 2, which it sets up the whole narrative of season 3.

I have posted this elsewhere and shall post it other places as I see more reactions. This is what I said on my Facebook page after watching the first two episodes.
It is not the same, but it is good.
Imagine if the events of Avatar the Last Airbender were real and happened 200 years ago. Nobody today was around to see it happen and there are no doubt many histories which may not all agree on every point, depending on who wrote them. So someone today created the animated series to tell the story, and they did a good job of telling it as they understood it. Then later another person does a live action version and they also try to tell the story and do a good job of it, but the two tellings put different emphasis on things and perhaps use different sources for the details and in the end, both tell the story well but neither is perfect telling of it. Neither includes everything that happened because there would be just too much to include it all and some details might be arranged differently to make it all work a docudrama - because in both cases, they are telling it as a story, not as a dry history book.
That is what this is like. If you assume that it was a true story being told by people who only have historic accounts to work with, both tellings are likely to be imperfect but they capture the essence of the history. That's how I choose to see this and on that basis, both are great jobs but they are not identical.
Also like the many tellings of the story of Robin Hood - there are multiple great jobs of telling the story but none of them are the same, just similar. There are also some bad jobs that have been done with Robin Hood - just as Avatar had a bad job done of trying to tell the story in the Movie that Shan't be Named.

It gives things a different perspective while honoring the source material. Don't get me wrong, it falls into exposition traps, and I disagree with *some* changes--when the writing doesn't quite deliver the intended impact that would have helped the change make sense--but for the most part, I'm enjoying their creativity when it comes to adapting this much-beloved series. 💕 I recommend listening to the entire credits song! I didn't even know Netflix was making a live adaptation! From what I've seen in this reaction, it's def not perfect, but i really enjoyed watching it. I think it's not meant to be a complete "remake" of the animated show, but just something to add to the animated version that we all know and adore (like u said). Can't wait to see more of ur reactions!!
I have a request: could you - if you haven't already seen it - react to "The Count of Monte Cristo" 2002? It's an amazing movie, and the acting/dialogue is superb. I think you would really enjoy it!!

I definitely enjoyed the visuals and costumes, aang's performance was far better than I expected and I thought all of the gaang were good. The plot changes did bother me, not because I'm against any deviation from the original show but because a lot of them felt unnecessary or messy. For example, Zhao worked far better in the show as a villain and Sokka's initial misogyny was important for his character arc.

This Suki is giving me neurodivergent vibes, and I honestly just love that.
I see a number of my traits in her, the way she just feels a bit weird in her interactions with Sokka, who's evidently a major point of interest to her, for all he represents. Freedom, the outside... The way it comes off as awkward and off-beat, how intensely she seems to be focus on the things she turns her attention to, her extreme bluntness and absolute dedication to her art and skill, and the glee at the sight of Kyoshi are all traits I can see being linked to her being ND. She doesn't really seem to understand what she's doing "wrong", in her first interactions with Sokka.
Can't wait to see how they treat this Suki in the rest of the show.

Dang! You hauled ass to get this out and I’m here for it! (Already done my watch so I’m curious to see your opinions.)
Edit: I’ll also edit this comment in response to what you say in the video. 😁
Edit 2: You directly quote Sokka “Airbending Slice” and then give a Sokka-like quote “Don’t mess with a monk”. I stand by my assertion that you ARE Sokka. 😛

I love seeing a positive review of this that appreciates what the new medium can bring to the story. Live action is fundamentally different from animation so trying to do a shot for shot remake of the original would not have been a good idea. I thought this was as good as I could have hoped for in a live action ATLA. Live action is not a cartoon and I don't expect it to be. The tone will naturally be more serious and the acting more naturalistic. I also think it looks amazing visually and don't get the critiques of the CGI and VFX. It seems like some people think being snarky or critical makes them look smarter. Not necessarily.

The thing about zukos crew is they're only alive bc of him... So while they may not be banished, they were supposed to be... From life

I think it was very fun to watch. I really enjoyed how they did Zuko, but I'm much less impressed with Azula (and Yue's costume?!). What bothered me most though is the writing for what the characters say. Many scenes would have been better with less words. They often just express sentiments that can be shown with a look and would have been much more impactful that way and every scene was turned into drama. I feel like the drama would hit harder if you get some fun scenes in between where you actually get to love the characters before having them dump their life story on you (This was mainly for the main gang of 3). Other than that though I actually think they did a good job compressing the story so it felt like they still went through a lot a without it feeling too rushed. Many of the costumes and locations looked amazing and most of the cast was great (though the acting directing could've used some work...). I think for both the acting direction and the dialogue it would've really helped if they kept the original authors on board. They really knew how to make you fall in love with the characters. Overall I'm excited to see the second season but I wouldn't call it a great adaptation.

I have to laugh at the fact you say "avatar state, yip yip!" Now 🤣🤣🤣 I do the same thing a lot of times, why did Ember Island Players change us like this? 😂🤣😂

From the previous avatar series. Monk Gyatso most probably isn't died because they fire bend him, instead he suck all the air from that region and got suicided himself.
I thought the first avatar state revealing would be more epic.

I love the new series. Changes were necessary because it had a a shorter time period and not a cartoon. They did such a good job keeping the overall story and the characters true to form.

I’m liking some parts of the new show while not liking other parts. For me the acting can fall a bit flat sometimes and in some episodes (specifically the Omashu one) they just put soo much into one episode that it felt overwhelming and crowded. The costumes, casting, and cgi are all done really well and that makes me happy.

I've finnished the TV show yesterday and i can say that people nowadays bitch about everything... If this show came out a few years back i think the rating would be completly different.
And i dont get why people get so mad when these adaptations are not 100% like the animated shows.
For me this TV show was really fun and im hyped for the next seasons.
    Nice reaction as always!!! 😉

Him contacting roku during the solstice isnt the only time he can contact his past lives. He just didnt know how to otherwise. Remember in the show when he talks with all of them one by one in the finale? Without any specific time period?

If all air benders teamed up like joined forces instead of each fighting many on their own they would have better chances in surviving against the fire benders

"Can't I just keep pretending I'm your friend"
    "You are my friend."
Sounds a lot like the Man of Steel scene when Clark says "Can't I just keep pretending I'm your son" and Clark's father said "You are my son."

On your comment about Katara being a genius... I think she would have been the next avatar after Aang if he wasn't trapped in ice for 100 years. Because she picked up waterbending faster than anyone must mean she has an affinity to bending in general. At leats is what I like to think
