In this Portugal travel vlog, we eat as much local Portuguese food as we can around Porto. We try a range of cheap eats that are local Portuguese dishes famous in Porto or in Portugal.
We highly recommend this as one of the best things to do in Portugal. You could spend your whole trip just eating the local food and drinking the wine.
In this food vlog, we try the following top 10:
1) Pastel de nata
2) Caldo Verde
3) Bifana em pao
4) Cachorrinho
5) Ginja em copos de chocolate
6) Pastel de bacalhau
7) Veggie Francesinha
8) Prego
9) Chorizo na brasa
10) Pica pau

After 5 years of aimless, yet enjoyable, backpacking around the world we found ourselves in New York City battling with depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on. After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle.
Our time spent battling depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. For any vegans out there: there are plenty of great vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Porto. You won't starve!
Good to know, thanks! 😃
they can starve during two or three days - or learn not to be sectarian...
@@silveriorebelo8045 I'm perfectly happy doing my bit to help the environment and reduce animal suffering and I'm super happy that more and more food establishments are happy to cater to us, so I don't have to starve, but thanks anyway 😊
@@silveriorebelo8045 seriously?
Good to know.. I'm going there next week. Thanks
The wine "chouriço" is really made with wine. And dis you know that indian "vindaloo" is an adaptation of a Portuguese dish, "carne (meat, once again) em vinha de alhos", that is, marinated in red wine and garlic, and a few other condiments and herbs?
Portuguese soup, does not have chicken stock as a base unless it chicken soup(canja). Water and Ollive oil is the bases of our soup. Check-in authentic portuguese recipes for this.
Actually they do use stock cubes. Stop treating Portugal like they are living in the dark ages
By thexway my wife is Portuguese
@@dom1664 Ah yes, your wife is Portuguese, so you must know everything about Portugal. I' portuguese myself and I don't use stock cubes, I must live in the dark ages apparently, like most of the Portuguese population since few people actually use stock cubes.
But What do I know, I'm not the one with a portuguese wife, so I must not know much about Portugal.
@@dom1664 Portuguese people dont use it on soup normally. We can use it for other stuff but not on soup
That caldo verde can’t have chicken broth. That’s a blasphemy!
It probably has chouriço though ( since it's a part of the recipe...). Unless it says it is vegetarian and they changed the original...
That's what I came here to say!! How dare you say Caldo Verde has chicken stock?!
Also, Caldo Verde without chouriço is just a normal, bland soup - if you're vegan or vegetarian just pick something else!
Knorr/Maggi. A lot of restaurants love it and they put on everything, even soup. It might have chicken broth and it might have chouriço on the pot. Even if people order without chouriço, doesn't mean is chouriço free. Some restaurants do that, some restaurants don't do that. I have seen it.
@@carpediem4091 obviously it has to have chouriço or it wouldn’t be caldo verde. That’s the essence of it.
@@iamabitterperson maybe they do to other soups just to give it flavor, but on caldo verde?! That’s just wrong, and it wouldn’t even taste right. Caldo verde is supposed to be a simple soup and that’s the beauty of it.
I'm so blessed to live in Portugal! My favorite are alheira picante, leitão, arroz de pato, bacalhau a brás and frango piri-piri! 💕
Ola
My parents were born in raised in Portugal, i was born in Canada- I'm finally making my way to Portugal in few weeks
Can't wait
Any must do things u recommend
Alheira is peak food
With rice and French Fries
My favourite food for almost 15 years
Well done! But you missed Pernil (Pur-neel) Sandwich in casa Guedes, Praça dos Poveiros. Also, in the same place, Queijo (Kay-ju) da Serra Sandwich. Best bifana is in front of Campanhã train station in a place called Astro. If you are short on money you can ask for just a sauce sandwich.
In Porto you must also try Filetes de Polvo (octopus) in a restaurant called Aleixo with the octopus rice, also near Campanhã and, last, but not the least: tripes...
Ando go to Mercearia das Flores in rua das Flores to take a look (and taste) at Portugal's best produces.
Enjoy
Thank you! and thank you so much for these recommendations! Really appreciate it!
to be honest i don't recomend Casa Guedes anymore, they've got a new ownership and the pernil they serve is dry. Is not the same anymore :'c
Lets agree to disagree . It all depends on the tastes . Everyone has diferent tastes . I personally ate both of the Astro and Congo Bifanas , and for me , Congo´s until now has the best Bifana of Porto .
@@FilipePT25 João, you are right. Last time I went to Casa Guedes it was not the same. I assumed it was an accident. Filipe, you are probably right also, but I saw in Astro a unique "sande de molho". A sandwich with only sauce. I don't know if Congo do the same. But, next time in Porto I will go there, sure.
Kayju???? Não será keijo???
Everything looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.
I love the egg tarts. They are so good! Thank you for the food tour!
Nice to see brits enjoying what Portugal has to offer again. Cheers!

You both are very lovely. And the food in Porto looks incredible!!
You're both GREAT ! ....I've just eaten, now I feel hungry again!....The food looks amazing. You just randomly came up on my "CZcams" feed.
I'm sitting here drinking coffee, now I wish I was there eating some of that food with you. Great video guys.
pastel de nata would go so well with that coffee... 😋
I have just finished my meal, and watching this video, I am hungry again. It looks all delicious.
Loved the look of the pork sandwich and the hot dog, makes me feel hungry watching these videos !!
Hi 👋🏼 🙂
They really are great🙌🏼
For top 3 jut add the francesinha 😋
You are very welcome to try those someday 😊
Cheers from Portugal
I absolutely loved the food in Portugal! Seafood was amazing…

Aw, this is the nicest kind of comment! 🙏 It makes us smile so much to hear this, thank you for the lovely comment 😊
The food looks amazing… and you both look in good form. Thanks for your vlogs.
Thanks so much! 😊
It's a pity that you aren't seafood fans - one of the best traditional places I could recommend is Casa do Pescador, in Afurada, Vila Nova de Gaia. Hearty, home cooking and as traditional as it gets. The barnacles, the octopus, the seafood rice, and the fresh fish dishes are just amazing - all of them
True story.
I've been there and it's horrible! They charge you things you didn't order and the staff is unfriendly. Also for this price the food is not more than okay.
@@r_mclovin Sorry but from your remark, you haven't been there...
@@ruialmeida818 you're right, I just invented everything. Also the earth is flat and God is a spaghetti monster...
@@r_mclovin God doesn't exist in any form, the earth takes the most stable shape in the universe (spherical), and you did make that up. I've been a customer of Casa do Pescador for years, and I was never overcharged. The staff is friendly and helpful, which contradicts your said experience at every turn. either you're confused and you're talking about another restaurant, or you're trying to just troll.
Tapas and Friends is one of the best spots in Porto! Great you found it!
Olives, olive oil, lemmon and garlic, with bread and wine is delicous. Yummy.
Ai que saudades 🥰
This seems to be a very charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Obviously waiting for a food episode, you do not disappoint.
Great food tour! I feel like we need to go to Portugal now, we're hungry!🤣
@Karl Zaraiva Portugal is fast climbing our list!
Very best local food to porto.conga gazela e lado b to top. abraço e obrigado da parte de Portugal!
Visiting porto in 3 weeks time. Great video
wow everything looked so good
This is your first video i watched! I'll be going to Portugal with my partner this weekend and will totally try some of the dishes you recommended!
You two are cute together!!! ❤❤❤
Really nice video guys 👍
Great taste of Porto, you made some great choices :)
All of that looks amazing! I too am a big meat eater so it seems like heaven!
Wonderful video. Nice creation.
Great work friends.
Thank you! 😊
Favas, favas, favas, ..,. Favas
I’ve moved to portugal and I love it
Fantastic series 😁
thank you! 🙏
Vegetarians should try Peixinhos da horta; Grilled Mushroomns; Migas j(ust bread and veggies but it's really good!)
Arroz de grelos (rice with cabbage sprouts )( you'll Love it), Turnip soup in Winter; cucumber and tomato salad; Roast peppers (delicious); .... Caldo Verde soup ONLY TAKES VEGETABLES! No chicken Broth. The taste is from the cabbage which is a special cabbage just for that soup
I'm Portuguese and that's actually the first time I saw a prego with cheese and ham
Also you should try "Cozido à portuguesa"
What ? In wich part of Portugal do you live on ? They serve it like that in all places of Porto . They even add a fried egg into it .
@@FilipePT25 - I've eaten "Pregos" in lots of places around Portugal and I've also never seen them with cheese and ham. However, I've never eaten them in Porto. Must be a local thing.
@@module79l28 in bifanas i've seen it everything. But never on prego. I usually eat it without the bread though xD
Wtf
Congrats for the channel and your honest opinion about our food. We have 1k ways to do cod dishes not 350.Thats what ours high Portuguese ranked chefs are saying. Success for your channel and a happy new year for all you guys.
Perfeito
Conheço alguns locais são fantásticos, vale pena visitar, não vai te arrepender...
Very cool video! Just to mention that yes porto is next to the coast and we have lot of fish dishes because of that however the cod does come dried out from norway!
Adorei escolhas, muito acertadas e fizeram pesquisa bem feita. Obrigado por terem visitado a minha cidade de coração.
I absolutely love seeing you guys travel internationally again! All of the food looks so delicious! My wife is vegetarian while I am a meat lover. So your food vlogs are so helpful to us! Can't wait for more adventures with the Beans!!
Thank you! So cool that you guys are similar to us and happy to hear it's helpful! The food was so good 😋
Nowadays you can always find meat or vegetarian options in most restaurants in Porto, although veggie is not typical local food.
My cousin once brought over a date to my Grandmother's place for dinner. They mentioned to her he was vegetarian.
My Grandmother responded " vegetarian? I though he was Canadian"
So Yes its fair to say, vegetarian dishes are not very traditional in Portugal. lol
Ahahaha essa história é muito boa, estou a rir às bandeiras despregadas
"You don't eat no meat?!" Your post reminds me of the film, my Big Fat Greek Wedding". So cute!!
hi local here! actually lado B's veggie francesinha is my favorite from all veggie ones, great choice 💕
like the mushroom white wine that the sandwich u had was interesting and the little achola cup and the tart looked good and the sausage looked great I wish they put his sausage and ur mushrooms and white sauce in the bread like appetizer liked video
i love my porto and my home town ribeira miss to bits
Portuguese food is amazing❤❤
Lindo de mais
That's a good timing. I recently moved to Porto and have not yet had the time to try out local food. Thanks!
go to tascos for the local food :)
I used to go to a few places where you get full plate for 4-5€
@@linogalveias thanks. any particular tasca you can recommend?
@@tokoexplore Café do Almada, next to Bingo da Trindade (near the church of Trindade and the metro).
Casa Guedes

@@linogalveias Nice. Thanks!
Just found you guys great review👍intention to visit Porto when restrictions easefrom UK thanks 🤞
Second time watching the video... Love people finding out our cuisine
I'm definitely a meat eater but I absolutely love mushrooms and garlic and I've never had mushrooms in white wine sauce so that one intrigued me the most.
you lucky Beans,
i want to eat ALL of it ! Clearly Porto is on the list for me A.S.A.P.
Keep it up and thanks !
J
Love it i´m a Porto guy and i love those foods
I been in porto, beatifull city nice food!
Love a food tour, Mark Weins watch out, the beans are coming for you!
Mark Wiens like beans too , so be careful 😁
You should have tried "peixinhos da horta". Extremely traditional and vegetarian. Inspiration for Tempura.
Tempura was "invented" by Portuguese!
"peixinhos da horta" is not vegetarian 🤦🏼♀️
@@luisacardoso3336 is vegetarian, not vegan!!
@@marialameiracoutinho1548 it's fish, it's not vegetarian. Vegetarian means no meat, fish is meat
@@FakingSwords "peixinhos da horta" are not fish. That's why the "fishes" are from the "garden", they're vegetables.
this is why I love being Portuguese
Food good in all Portugal, every region have their specialty
The Pataniscas de Bacalhau (codfish patties) with tomato rice, a Punheta de Bacalhau, Stone Soup, Alheiras there is veggies alheiras too, and Porto has free fish too.
the time I seen a mix of meat and veggie food. love it
The food looked amazing I’m a meat and seafood fan hope to you guys try more of it in the future with the 300 + ways to try cod ❤
Hi guys. The Portuguese food is fantastic. I love most of them, specially codfish. I invite you to eat it. So delicious.
Oh the food looks delish! We can't wait to visit Porto!!

Hi
mmm 😋 it was surprisingly good!!
Porto is fantastic !!! My late Wife and I had the start to an epic vacation in Porto, you should also try the Tripa a moda do Porto.... an real eye-opened of a dish for those who don't usually like Tripe !!! Cheers !
Wonderful video, I suggest you guys try "Tripas à moda do Porto" !
Really love your video, new friend
All the food on show look proper yummie! What I love is the chorizo sausage cooked over the aguardente liquor ! So delicious! And (as I do love fish and seafood) Cataplana ! I love the portuguese food! So it's official? You both fell in love with (Northern-) Porugal? Did you see Guimaraes? Or Braga? I loved the 1 time I visited Portugal (and also stayed in the north) for a summer holiday. I did 2 x with work visit the Lisbon area and stayed in luxury hotels in Cascais and Estoril. Lisbon is beautiful too! I love Portugal more than Spain ..
OH hark at him and stayed in luxury hotels.
@@grahamjohnson4702 I actually did camp the first time during summer. But if work books me a luxury hotel I am not going to say no ;)
We really did love it so much.. it definitely won't be our last trip to portugal! Can't wait to see more
Food wise... No question about.
There's nothing wrong with reviewing olives and bread, that's what I would eat for the whole day... with a cold beer.
E incrível eu amo o Porto!
