PORTUGAL - This is the official list of the 7 best Portuguese foods - these are the best foods you don’t want to miss eating when you’re in Portugal! No, whenever there’s a list, there’s bound to be some controversy, and many will say that certain dishes should have been on this list… but it was voted on by locals and this is the official list of food!
I traveled around Portugal to eat these 7 best Portuguese foods!
1. Sardinha Assada - Grilled Sardines
A Merendinha do Arco Bandeira, Lisbon, Portugal (maps.app.goo.gl/pvQvpCTH81Zn9...) - Located right in the heart of Lisbon, this restaurant serves authentic and classic Portuguese foods. I came here specifically to try their grilled sardines. Now, just to let you know, unfortunately I wasn’t in Portugal during sardines season, and if you are, you’d find fresh sardines everywhere. But they were still good and this restaurant is a great place to try local Portuguese food.
2. Queijo Serra da Estrela - Portuguese soft sheep cheese
Manteigaria Silva, Time Out Market Lisboa (maps.app.goo.gl/AhsJgsfDgtCXe...) - Famous for their cured meats and cheese, we next tried the legendary Queijo Serra da Estrela, a Portuguese sheep cheese from the mountains nearby Lisbon.
3. Caldo Verde - Green Soup
A Merendeira, Lisbon, Portugal (maps.app.goo.gl/dhkHRJZvF4qKT...) - Next up on this list of best Portuguese food, we’re eating caldo verde, and comforting Portuguese green soup made with kale and a potato pureed broth. It’s one of the most comforting and easy to eat dishes in Portugal.
4. Alheira de Mirandela - Bread and Meat Sausage
Solar Moinho de Vento, Porto, Portugal (maps.app.goo.gl/oFb9L1C5BSN4d...) - In Porto, the next dish on this list is Alheira de Mirandela, a bread and meat sausage that’s unlike any other sausage I’ve ever had.
5. Leitão da Bairrada - Roast Suckling Pig
Nova Casa Dos Leitões, Aguim, Portugal (maps.app.goo.gl/oZkfY42uWnXfX...) - Few foods in all of Portugal are more loved than Portuguese roast suckling pig. And to eat the best suckling pig you need to go to Mealhada!
6. Arroz de Marisco - Seafood Rice
O Jorge do Peixe, Quarteira, Portugal (maps.app.goo.gl/EqXjgrhhM9JpS...) - Now we’re heading to the south of Portugal, seafood heaven. And one of the best Portuguese foods is arroz de marisco, seafood rice.
7. Pastel de Belém
Manteigaria, Lisbon, Portugal (maps.app.goo.gl/rHQep5y49TtK2...) - Probably the most famous of all Portuguese sweets is the egg tart, and the original is made in Belem, near to Lisbon. However, Manteigaria is another place that makes them well and has many loyal customers. 8 years ago when I went to the original in Belem: • Original Portuguese Eg...
That wraps up this list of 7 best Portuguese foods, don’t miss eating them when you’re in Portugal!

As a Portuguese native, born and raised, I thank you for your visit and expect to see you soon. Always welcome. Best.
The seafood is great...no exaggeration
Portugal is such a beautyfull country and the food is so delicious!
Hope to come back soon, since then all my love to Portugal from Romania!!❤❤❤
Nice of the manager to show up at the sardines and basically says "This how we do it". He knows if a customer struggles that can impact their enjoyment of the dish.
I love it when restaurant staff make that effort. This is often done in Korean family run restaurants.
People of Portugal are so nice and friendly
as a portuguese, thank you, feel welcome to pay us a visit sometime and try some of our good foods 👍👍
Not with the Brazilian people...
You are not portuguese
@@telgrupos6143 no, I'm Brazilian, and I know what I'm talking.
@@rafaellameira2207 not with u, probably. i have a lot of brazilian friends that love to be here :)
Mark, I have to interrupt watching the video to express my gratitude for you always being so genteel on these videos. You express beautiful family values, even when stuffing your face so full it looks like you might choke. You are always gracious, polite, and thankful. That means a lot to us older folks who have old-fashioned values. It's obvious that your parents did an exemplary job of raising you. Thanks Mark.
I think its so nice he´s even wearing his wedding ring
@melissamoran5626 what? Why wouldn't he wear his wedding ring? He's married 🤷♂️
Exactly! Mark is a truly respectful and decent man. That brings as many subscribers as the food does. His channel is my favourite here in Australia
Thank you very much, really appreciate it!
@@AstrixCloud I dont wear it because I am too dumb and I would get it lost, my husband doesnt wear it because he works a hands on job and it hurts. People like you wake up in the morning just looking for trouble with strangers online, that is very sad. Make friends, get a hobby instead of picking/starting arguments with ramdom strangers.
Literalmente es una cocina maravillosa, no le tiene nada que envidiar a la cocina Francesa, Española, Italiana, etc. Sus arroces y mariscos son de otro mundo, literalmente.
Those ones everyone already knows
Gracias Hermano
@@CLA45sAMG Tengo la suerte de vivir muy cerca de Portugal, por lo que conozco de primera mano su gastronomía. No hay ni una sola receta que no me guste. Es simplemente excepcional y su cultura y sus gentes muy buenas personas.
GRACIAS HERMANO !
Portugal is my favourite country on the planet, amazing people, amazing food, amazing climate (especially the south, Algarve coast) 🇵🇹
You can say that about many other countries. You're biased
@@porfiriato84 I’m from England so I have no bias to Portugal. It’s just my personal opinion, I expect other people to have their own opinion.
Spain has a lot of great things about it too. But then again I love many European countries. Italy and France are at the top of the list.
@@user-og2wt3le4j I really enjoyed visiting Italy and Spain. Not been to France yet but probably will do eventually.
Great to hear that, an amazing country!
Lived here for a year in high-school when my dad took a job there. The best experience of my life. Such a family oriented culture and the food was incredible.
@CLA45sAMG hope to visit again one day! Will never forget those days.
"I love this place. It's so laid back"

A Lisbon classic 😁
where did u saw that? lol
I’m living in Portugal and it’s a paradise to me 🥰
That owner remembering you is such a Portuguese thing to do, every bar or restaurant will remember and welcome anyone with your smile and energy. Most of us are so welcoming, makes me so proud. What a great video🥰
I'm from the north of Portugal and I have to say you did us proud. Really enjoyed your Portugal series!
Ya same here, im a fisherman from Viana do Castelo. But i live in Toronto Canada and watching him eat that arroz de marisco just took me way back.
Gosh i NEED to go to Portugal!! The food looks Incredible!!
Come here! You'll be well received. I'm sure you'll love the food and mostly, the people.
As a portuguese, i can tell you, yep, our food is awesome, from codfish to roasted lamb, i recommend everything, but, don't go eat sardines in Lisbon, come on, eating in the capital is where you'll get ripped off!
Portuguese food is realy insane!
No question,Portugal have the best food in the World 🌍
Viva Portugal 🇵🇹
Now that's a good joke lmao

Don't talk about you don't know! Our cuisine comes from more than 600 Years Tradition! You can find Portuguese influences all over the world dude! From American Continent to All the Asia! The thing is, it's still a very well keep secret!
These videos on YT can't show 0,01% of our culture and dishes dude!

Hi 👋 Mark
I just wanted to let you know this will be the only video my mom will not have watched of yours.
My mommy passed away on Monday.😢
She would have loved to have met you.
Thank you 🙏 for all you do and for always putting a smile on my mother’s face and keeping her company and taking her to all the places in the world 🌎 she would have loved to travel to.
Love this series and Portugal,
Dishes I loved and underrated:
-Portuguese Duck Rice, couldn’t stop eating it .
- Baked Octopus in Olive oil
the octopus dish its called polvo a lagareira
Congratulations on the great content and selection of dishes and places representative of Portuguese gastronomy. Just a note, "manteigaria" doesn't mean buttery but a shop where in the old days they used to sell butter before it was widely available. Buttery is "amanteigado"
Thank you very much, and thank you for the correction and insights!
Who loves this channel as much as I do ? 🙌🏻
Best in the business
Only you love it as much as you because I like it as much as I do….
We all do 🌶
i dont because he eats like a
pig
I do my friend
Merendeira is very old…. Reminds me of my clubbing days. There is tradition in Lisbon, after clubbing, people finish the night ( at dawn usually) with a good “caldo verde” and “ pão com Chouriço “ then we go to bed when the sun is rising.lol
My mothers dad is from Madeira, cannot wait to go and visit, thank you for the amazing experience Mark
Madeira is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I am excited for you 😀
Very cool, I'd love to visit Madeira!
You should, the cuisine is just amazing!
Our culture our food is finally getting the recognition it deserves
I am also a foodie and love my Portuguese food from our seafood rice to the cuzido a portuguesa.
I'm drooling watching this. I miss Portugal. I can't wait to go back. Love the top 7, definitely the best.
One of my favourite videos of Marks. Love how he respectfully and enthusiastically showcases the food and culture.
Yes give me all of them. Great country, great people. muito amor da Ásia
As a portuguese native,,, you have only lightly touched our gastronomic richness, imagine squid, corn meal cakes (broas), chanfana roasted goat, fried sparrows, eaten whole bones and all, you can't imagine our epicurean diversity, it's even more diverse than that, it's fn endless, and fulfilling!, kudos mark, but please do expand!
Visiting Easter. Can you recommend a place in Porto for goat? Any restaurants in Porto/Lisbon for what you've listed would be appreciated.
Expand?
Will you pay for his travel expenses and food then ?
Show some appreciation
He doesn't owe anything to you or us!
@@theo208 Only his waist line should expand? surely after all these years.
What a rude attitude you have.. Unbelievable.
Thank you very much, a lot to still try!
That is a solid top 7 list! If I was rounding it out to a top 10, I would add Lulas Recheadas (stuffed squid), Bacalhau a Gomés de Sa (cod casserole with sautéed onion, garlic and potatoes) and Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams in a sauce made with Portuguese green wine (vinho verde)).
Im surprised with the voting not a single cod dish made the list! 🤯
Yes I was surprised about that too, probably #8 on the vote would have been cod!
Totally agree, any bacalhau dish should have made the list! And what about the Porco preto?? Salchichas frescas, Moeles Estufados, Sapateira Recheado, Febras Grelhados, Polvo a Lagareiro, Cabritto Assado, and of course, Frango Assado although Mark covered that in one of his recent videos. Sooo many great dishes and usually cooked by a mum in the kitchen. Portugual has the best restaurants in the world when it comes to price/quality. And we haven't even discussed the great wines and Licor Beirão!!
As a portuguese person who has a portuguese flag in my home and car and so on,I feel this is the best episode of all time knocking down your previous visit to Portugal as 2nd best, but really you need to go to the azores islands, that will be new number 1 vid bro
Esqueceste da bandeira na cama a fazer de lencol :)
Mark makes everyplace and every food interesting and delicious. He shares the history of the places and the food. Thank you Mark.
You’re awesome mark, me an my brother watch you every morning before he goes to work and I go to sleep, he works during the day and I work at night. It’s great.
Nice, great to hear you have a good relationship with your brother. May I ask which country you're from? :)

Thank you very much!
Watching mark eat the food i was brought up and raised on is such a warming and fuzzy feeling.
Perfect timing! I'll be going to Portugal later this year so I'm taking notes from your latest videos! Thank you!
Great to hear that, you'll have an amazing time!
I recommend visiting the Portuguese Azores islands, if you want to enjoy the best fish, sea food and cheese in the country.
Dear mark you should have tried, arroz de cabidela , polvo a lagareiro, vitela assada, papas sarrabulho, cozido a portuguesa
Arroz cabidela is top tier
And dont forget the number 1 food the francesinha
Sabes bem!
You gotta be kidding me, half of this stuff looks like crap.
@LoBae that is such an uninformed comment....
I wont lie, it does look messy, just like Feijoada, Mão de vaca com Grão, Dobrada, Caldeirada etc.... But the reality is all that stuff tastes amazing.
Arroz de Cabidela which is blood rice, can be made with Rooster, with rabbit or with a kind of sea snake called Lampreia.... All of them are amazing.
Mão de vaca is cows Hand with chickpeas, an amazingly flavorful stew
Caldeirada is a fish stew that can have a gigantic variety of fish, shellfish etc.
Even the sea food rice he got had a messy stew look, but most certainly tasted wonderfully..
Want a good looking dish? Catapelana de marisco is a nice looking, really tasty one. But keep in mid, in this country, the best tasting cuisine is NOT the prettiest to look at
Dont judge the food just by its looks
My favorite European country😍😍😍 fell in love with the food and the people♥️
@@CLA45sAMGthank you! I visited Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Albufeira, Faro and next on my list is Porto ☺️☺️
You've really done such an amazing job covering the different types of food in Portugal, really remarkable how you've covered it all, I really enjoy these videos a lot, thank you so much!
Thank you!
Mark if you ever go back again , please visit the gastronomy of the Alentejo region you will love it .
Portugal is a must visit for me because of portuguese egg tart alone.
It's egg *custard* not egg!!!
@@CLA45sAMGPois é! nata = CREAM in direct translation of course, not even egg ... but it's rich egg custard in the pastry. My favourites. Never so good in UK.
Drove me mad the way he kept calling them "egg tarts" 😕
Thank you, Mark !!!! For showing us always the BEST !!! The rice and seafood dish looked spectacular 😋 🦞🦐 yum!!!! Hello from Canada 🇨🇦
I live near Lisbon and for me it's the fish...Daurada and robelo! Great gambas and fresh food in general!! Great vlog Mark!! ❤Portugal 🇵🇹

Typo or spellcheck...I know! Thx though
@tamaramadelin4831 Sorry to also be that guy, but it is called Robalo aka Sea Bass 😅
@@Jahh_2s LOL! Hey, thx again, but in my defense I don't speak Portuguese and get my French and English all mixed up with Portuguese...It's a mess!!!
im lucky enough to have portuguese in laws ive eaten everything you ate on this video and i agree that its a fantastic cuisine i make a lot of it myself delish!!
Hey @Mark, great to have you here again dude!
Awesome video!
I visited Lisbon a few years back. One of my fondest memories from traveling and one of my favorite cities in Europe. Coming from Norway I was a bit shocked when I figured out how late they usually eat dinner, but we got the hang of it.
Wow just like Italy, Portugal is a foodie heaven for sure. The shrimp looks so healthy and delicious along with the crab but the seafood pasta looks tremendous. I love the simplicity of cheese, bread, & jams to pear with a significant wine. I bet Mark's palate is worth a million bucks or more!! Im definitely enjoying this tour de Portugal of some of the world's best seafood!! Thanks again Mark for the constant phenomenal content and anticipating on viewing your next virtual culinary adventure. Salud!! 🍇🧀🥗🦐🍻
🇵🇹 cuisine is truly one of the best in the 🌎!! They definitely heavily influenced 🇧🇷 cuisine!!
Everytime I watch, I get hungry even if I just had something to eat. Portugal has an abundance of seafood. They have the absolute best sardines on the planet, for sure! They are big, plump and juicy! A must have 💯
Wow, what a mouthwatering tour of Portuguese cuisine! 😍 Each dish looks so delicious and authentic. Can't wait to try them when I visit Portugal!
MARK WIENS IS NOT ONLY A GOOD EATER HE IS ALSO A GOOD SPEAKER AND A GOOD TRAVELLER TOO .😍
That’s ok Micah I’ll have your portion of the Arroz de Marisco ! lol that looked just fabulous well all the dishes looked like real classics
Mark... you killed it buddy. When u were in morroco I was hoping u would jump over to portugal and try the foods u missed out on last time.. I'm glad ur enjoying it snd ur family. A Nossa !! Enjoy brother
I love all these shows you make you gotta come to Canada you can get every countries food in one spot. Try Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal, Edmonton
I love Portuguese food!! This makes me want to go to Portugal so badly!
I Grow up eating Sardines in Morocco there so delicious And it has a lot vitamins like vitamin B12-vitamin D and calcium You just Garra know how to Cook them right goes well With " Charmoula " Then Fried Them 😋 Then eat them with hot Moroccan tea 🍵 Ill tell you It's so addictive 😁👑
Portugal Food is really delicious And unique also!
Great podcast. I am fromMassachusetts, and we have a large Portuguese community here (Fall River, New Bedford, Provincetown); there are some excellent restaurants here. One of my favorite dishes is Pork with Clams-sounds odd, but it really works! Along with a glass of Green wine, it makes an excellent lunch. Thanks again
Only recently broke into the world of sardines(mostly canned). Sardine, little bit of hot sauce, and a cracker? Perfection
Awesome video! Im a bit of a Caldo Verde addict myself, its so good!! You did a great job showing some of our favorite foods here in Portugal!! Thanks Mark!
Welcome to our small litle garden... You have so much more to taste and experience.
Enjoy and be happy.
My wife and I are visiting Porto and LIsbon in September looking forward to visiting these places and I love how you have linked the locations in the description.

Thanks Mark, you do a fantastic job of making these food tour videos...and this Portuguese food looked amazing! 😄😄👍👍
The food looks sensational. Thank you for these recommendations!
Hi Mark, you should have tried Arroz de Cabidela and Cozido à Portuguesa! They are not on the list but are some of all time Portuguese people favourites! Congrats on the Channel!
Portuguese food is quite simple because the key is the freshness and quality of the ingredients! Fresh sea food only requires good quality rock salt and garlic and olive oil. That’s it!
ty for the visit! always welcome.
I'm so glad Mark you tasted the best of Portugal.
I do the same every year when I visit my parents. All those dishes are on my list every year.
I come from Serra da Estrela region and my village makes that lovely cheese.
It's a must around Christmas and Easter time. The cheese is smoother in the colder season, cause the sheep eat the green grass from winter, and we make a big hole on the middle of the cheese to scoop it out. We also use the Pumpkin jam.
Leitão is another must...
Sardines yes, always, if you look to eat fresh fish, sardines is the best, it's caught in the wild. It's sad that most of the fish these days comes from fish farms.
Again, when I was a kid fresh grilled sardines around S. JOAO festive season was great every June. Goes better with corn bread, and let the sardine fat get soaked by the bread....yummm.
I wish there was more of a Portuguese food presence in Australia. Sometimes, I have to travel to Sydney to do so. But no grilled sardines there😢.
We do get a lot of salted Codfish in Australia, wich we are crazy for. Look at #1001debacalhau
Thank you for showing our culture
Amazing Yummilicious Portuguese food 😋i see so much flavor
Awesome tour, would love to experience that! ❤
Great series, just found it a few days ago, now going back on all your food journeys! Cheers!

This is so great. I’m off to Lisbon and Porto today!!!
Another amazing video of Portuguese food, I hope next time you visit Portugal you can go more inland to Minho, Tras os Montes or Alentejo for even more amazing foods. Like Cabito Assado no Forno, Arroz de pica no chão, papas de sarrabulho, cozido a Portuguesa, Porco preto , carnes maturadas tipo Arouquesa, Minhota, Barrossã. and many more
Thank you very much, I hope to visit again!
Wow! Wish I was on that exquisite food tour. Thank you for sharing

For me, from a Portuguese native, this was one of the best videos I've ever seen about Portuguese food
Thank you for showing our amazing coutry, hope to have you back soon!
Mark, i'm portuguese and i watched the entire series with a big smile on my face. 🙂
Hey @Mark Wiens, the "Pastel de Belém" is actually called "custard tart", since "Egg tart" is other delicacy from other regions in Portugal.
Thanks for visiting our country, there is a lot of "hidden" food and places to enjoy :) You'll even find typical african food places in Lisbon!
No matter how many vids I watch, can never get tired of Mark. My goal one day!!!
I'm a seafood lover! I will take those sardines and cod fish cakes.
Big up yourself n the family.more love from Ghana
Mark you are so special,,The faces you pull when you enjoy the food makes me so jealous,I want to try alll of them. my thanks to you mark
Got the taste of delicious food during my vacation to Portugal in April. Had a sumptuous dinner at Farol Restaurant in Alamada. Excellent food and great service.
Mark, i am a huge fan of yours! I am glad you now understand why it is so difficult to me (at least) to travel abroad! Our cuisine is always a must, at least for me and my family. The "saudade" of our food is umbareable
