I met Norm once and he was stupid nice, and somehow accidentally funny on purpose. I told him I wanted to do what he did on SNL and he said "if you want to get fired, there are easier jobs to get first"
Bless that man for always having a sense of humor about getting canned by NBC. I would've loved to hear him and Conan shit talk the network for hours.
THIS joke is Norm. It reads like a carefully crafted joke (who knows, I suppose he could have used it repeatedly), but it’s self-deprecating, painfully frank and wickedly funny. And he said it in casual conversation.
I don't think there was anything accidental about it, Norm always went for the funny. What separates Norm's comedic genius was that he spent his career making it seem like he was a "simple guy" who was unintentionally/accidentally funny, with the slow cadence in his voice, constantly downplaying his intelligence, and feigned naivety. All while possessing this endlessly deep pool of philosophical, literary, and historical knowledge that he'd dip into occasionally just to surprise us.
If the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, then the greatest joke Norm ever made was convincing us that he wasn't always the smartest person in the room.
@@TroyBarnesBrain well said!
@TroyBarnesbrain outstanding !! 👏👏🙏🙏
*Norm:* "OJ refused to take a lie detector test. His reason? It detects lies!"
Norm always said the prefect joke would be having the punchline exactly the same as the set up. That joke is pretty damn close
It detects your heartbeat. My friend needed to pee and while at a lie detector test failed because he was holding it in.
@@mclean9012meg Ryan. Honestly norm was the greatest. I watch norm MacDonald live every couple days still. His timing is unbeatable
my fave norm joke was right after OJ trial, 'Its official, MURDER, is now legal in the state of California', only one Norm Mac
They really should have included that. But the lucky stabbing hat one is funny too.
Personal favorite was “man that is some bad luck when the one guy that said he would have died for you, kills you”.
I thought the full joke was about the Menendez Brothers and how murdering your parents is illegal there while killing your wife is not
That was amazing
My personal favorite one is where OJ was selling lemonade with his daughter that ended with:
“When asked by reporters why sales were so low, OJ replied, ‘Beats me,’ and went back to cutting lemons with a giant knife.”
Choosing an OJ joke to close it all out was really symbolically powerful. Almost like an f-you to NBC for firing him over them. I miss Norm so much.
Maaan... I'm watching dirty work when I get home! R.I.P NORM
Not so much to NBC but to Dick Ebersol
@@dogpd3 Not sure if you're aware but it was Don Ohlmeyer that pushed for Norm to get fired because he was a close friend of OJ, not Ebersol.
@@TheTrainFan9 ok
A noble gesture. But you had to be alive and aware of current events back then to understand and appreciate the sting that was packed into that joke.
Including an OJ joke was the coolest thing SNL has ever done.

-- Some Ol' Chunk of Coal
If you don't know Norm, get to know his work. He is a deep, incredibly smart, comedic genius, and thanks to the internet, his immortality is assured. Norm hid his cancer for over 9 years because he didn't want it to color people's perception of his comedy.
That's a really Norm thing to do...
Norm lost a long and brutal battle with cancer last month. It is only now that i can look back and laugh.
are you a bot?
Except for Canine Venereal tumour. Tehnically it is a cancer STD that is a 5000 year old dog
They missed his Holy Grail: "Julia Roberts told reporters this week that her marriage to Lyle Lovett has been over for some time. The key moment, she said, came when she realized that she was Julia Roberts, and that she was married to Lyle Lovett.”
Norm called that joke his Holy Grail because he felt the perfect joke would have the same punchline as the setup and that's as close as he got
Amazing guy

My favorite from Norm. RIP and Thanks for the Laughs. 🤗
Possibly the best OJ joke too.
Ya know the more I hear about OJ the more I realize he was a real jerk
same, i was like, they better not F this up and be 'woke'...
Was OJ Simpson high on speed the night of the murders?
"Absolutely not!" said defense attorney Johnny Cochrane today. "And a simple test of any of OJ's blood found at the crime scene will prove it."
I love that SNL chose the last joke that they did considering some big wig at NBC got him fired from the show because of it - As it should be: Norman gets the last laugh=D. RIP Norm!
The idiot who fired Norm and banned him from Conan died of cancer 4 years ago. Don Ohlmeyer
@@bepowerification thanks for that info, I never would have looked that up.
@@WhyTheHorseface me neither :) I recently watched Norm on Letterman right after he was fired and Letterman also said that Ohlmeyer is a jerk. I then looked him up to see what he is doing now and found out he is dead. I recommend watching all appearances of Norm on Letterman (and also Conan). You can not only see that he was a comedy genius but also a really goodhearted human being :(
Also now they roast OJ all the time it’s ridiculous
For real! That's one of his best jokes ever. Everyone remembered it and it circled around for years. Conan told Letterman several years ago that was his favourite Norm joke.
that "just like a SNAKE" delivery was hilarious
Classic Norm he was so good
The delivery was everything. Not sure if you’ve seen it or remember it, but the richest girl’s birthday party “two cakes” one was classic Norm, and one only he could deliver.
Doesn't make sense, though, since the French guy (Alain Robert) was called "spider man", not "snake man".
@@rutabega2039 I think that you are allowed to alter the facts, in pursuit of a joke, when your segment is explicitly called: "The Fake News". ;)
@@rutabega2039 I remember this guy being in the news during the same time period and some outlets were indeed calling him "snake man" so Norm used it to his advantage.
One I've never forgotten "Topping the music charts this week is Better Than Ezra. At number two...Ezra."
I remember that joke! 😂
every joke norm did was an instant classic. i really love the graph about women in car accidents where "the numbers don't add up to 100%... that's because the math was done by a woman. for those of you hissing at that joke, it should be noted that joke was written by a woman. yeah, now you don't know what the hell to do, do ya? i'm just kidding, we don't hire women."

Only from Norm's brain could this lunacy come. Plus the perfectly timed pause. Then those dimples as he appreciates his own joke.
Also this gem: “in his new book, OJ Simpson said he would take a bullet for Nicole. Man, that’s some bad luck, when the only person who would save your life… kills you.”
@@wintercomesearly The key to comedy is often.
Timing.
That one is my absolute favorite of his OJ jokes. So much contempt for Simpson's lies contained in such brevity.
I teared up seeing that last joke there. Clearly, the folks at SNL were saying something by selecting it. Missing you already, Norm.
what??
@@tyranosurasmax an old executive at NBC was friends with OJ, and fired Norm for the jokes about OJ.
@@ezioaltairac ahhh understood. appreciate it.
Indeed.
Don Ohlmeyer. He’s dead now tho
I'll add to the chorus of folks thanking SNL for doing this. Hopefully fans of the show half my age will dig deeper into the man Tina Fey once called the last dangerous comic on SNL.
Could you please elaborate on him? I'm curious to know what made him so special.
@@forbes646 mostly he would sometimes bomb on purpose and would keep on drilling the joke into the audience until they laughed. Dude was masterclass, ALWAYS the smartest man in the room just waiting to pounce on those who didn't get him. Most importantly? Didn't care what the h people thought of him and always did his own thing. A true original and most fearless comedian of the past 30 years.
@@forbes646 There are a lot of things one could say about Norm, but personally I think what made him so great was how relentlessly dedicated he was to what HE found funny. He would never compromise for an audiences sake - he'd seriously just simply say what he thought was funny. 95% of the time it just WAS funny because he was so naturally funny, and the other 5% of the time he'd either tell a joke that was either so kitschy, quaint, or tasteless that the humour comes less from the actual joke itself and moreso from you going "Did that guy really just say that?" - but because he's so good at delivering said jokes, you're laughing *with* him instead of *at* him anyway.
Or sometimes one of his jokes would just bomb and he'd still manage to be fucking hilarious anyway.
I imagine some people may see him differently (hell, I imagine some other fans may strongly disagree with my portrayal of him in the above paragraph) but he was honestly kind of a paradox, comedically. He was the most conventional stand-up you'd ever seen, while at the same time being the least conventional stand-up you'd ever seen. He could do an entire comedy set without getting barely any laughs and yet it would probably still be one of the funniest sets you'd ever seen in your life.
I dunno, I've written too much already - just look up the "12 Minute Joke" on this site if you haven't already. He was just so effortlessly funny.
@@_fesh Thank you for such an extensive reply. I hadn't heard of him until he passed, though I now realize I saw him in Billy Madison as Billy's good friend who is always drunk lol. That Tina Fey said that about him speaks volumes, to me anyway. I'm a huge fan of 30 Rock.
I've been watching a lot of his clips these last couple of days, and I think a big part of his effortless delivery was his unique voice and slight accent.
@@Tobester_McDonkey Something tells me your boomer @$$ couldn't even name all the cast members, much less their political affiliations.
I was certain they wouldn’t include any O.J. Jokes, the comedians must’ve fought for that one. Glad they put it in because it shows what Norm was all about, Going against the grain and being yourself even if it hurts you financially and pisses everyone else off. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF.
The guy that fired Norm is dead now. He was the guy who was apparently good friends with OJ.
Random Name Yeah I knew about that guy, I didn’t know he was dead, but even with that guy out of the picture with the way the world is today everyone getting offended over any little thing, that’s the main reason I figured they would’ve left the O.J. Jokes out. Especially the “ lucky stabbin hat” one 😂..So in a way Norm got the last laugh. Still hate he got fired over someone’s friendship with O.J. But that’s the way the world is, Politics rule.
@@mikeprivette4180 not necessarily. It really trickles down to presentation and structure.
@@mikeprivette4180 Norm also got to have a laugh soon after the guy left NBC. As soon as he left, SNL asked Norm to host. His monologue was hilarious, a lot of great stuff in that show. "We've got a bad show for you tonight". He was also starring on his ABC sitcom at the time. He got to come back as the star of an ABC show, to the show he was fired from, on the network where he was nearly banned. I only learned about that from Conan's tribute podcast. Conan refused to ban Norm from his show. Looking back, possibly one of the signs Conan wasn't meant to stay at NBC forever.

@KRPTV You know who else thinks this was a proper tribute to Norm Macdonald?
You guessed it-
Frank Stallone.
it’s no secret that Norm and NBC weren’t exactly fans of one another. the fact that they ended with a joke that they hated to the point of firing him from the network, and not refusing to show everybody the kind of comedian Norm truly was... it’s so heartwarming in a way that’s really hard to explain.
That very last line "Good Night and Good Luck" was a great nod by Norm to the legendary Edward R. Murrow.
Yeah, some of us are old enough to know.
A Clinton joke and an OJ joke? They really are embracing Norm.
They always have embraced Norm.. Jost has gone on record in the past saying that he and Che based their approach to Weekend Update off of Norm's iteration of it.

To the SNL social media communications professionals who are responsible for CZcams content:
Based on what I’m seeing across media platforms and channels, it’s possible that Norm McDonald is at this very moment, more popular than when he held down the Update desk. Which would make sense because so much of his humor was just simply ahead of the times.
My point is, you are no doubt sitting on a gold mine of Norm material that will never be more appreciated than it will right now. Feed the interns all night if you have to and release large amounts of clip shows as soon as you possibly can, although as the professionals, I trust that you’re way ahead of me, provided that there aren’t legal reasons for not beefing up your CZcams channel by honoring the legacy of a true original that SNL can proudly say it introduced to the world.
What’re you still reading this comment for? You’ve got clips to string together! And don’t care if they’re relevant or if people will get it. We didn’t get it most of the time back then either, but that won’t keep us from appreciating the laidback, yet savage humor that was the goofy genius of NM. 🙏
HAANH?

Shocked..so incredibly proud that they gave Norm the respect he deserves! Good job guys! 🤗😁
He was a downright funny guy. R.I.P. Norm Macdonald, we will miss you.
Sgt. Sisk : Ladies and gentlemen, our suspect is not human. He is at home in the bush. Shoot to kill. Any questions?
Norm : Oh, yeah, yeah, I got a question there. When do we get to light our torches?
Sgt. Sisk : When it gets dark.
Norm : Ah, I see. Oh, hey, I got another question there. Suppose, hypothetically, you know, a guy had already lit his torch. I mean, it'd be cool if he could just keep it lit, huh?
Sgt. Sisk : Yes.
Norm : Oh, excellent. Excellent.
Sgt. Sisk : Now, if there are no more questions...
Norm: Oh, hey, hey, hey, I got another question. Hey, uh, if one part of the mob gets separated from another part of the mob, shouldn't there be a place that we can get together? Maybe a secret place the two mobs could reunite, and we'd be a big mob again.
Sgt. Sisk : Stay with the mob.
Norm : Stay with the mob. All right.
Sgt. Sisk : Right.
Norm : Hey, hey, hey, I got another question. Hey, uh, doesn't this guy deserve a fair trial?
Sgt. Sisk : You - back of the mob!
Norm : "Back of the mob"? What? This is my spot! I came early!
Sgt. Sisk : Okay, *out* of the mob!
Norm : Ah, this mob blows.
One of my favorite Norm MacDonald moments
Lol. Only true fans will know where this is from. Love this movie.
*Later On*
“I’m not joining a mob to kill a black guy i’ll tell you that.” 😂
I've never seen the clip you've quoted here, and it's a tribute to both of you that I still read it in his voice and with his delivery.
RIP Norm. We love you.
Norm Macdonald was the smartest, funniest, and best looking comedian. Hilarious and gorgeous! There will never be anyone like Norm ever again.
They even went with both a Clinton and OJ joke, his favorite targets. Norm would be proud
Damn - that Obama library joke had levels
Only for the people that refer to him as black
Only to the people that see race and pin all his bad attributes on his hhbwhyytte side. Not like dad was around in his life much.
Be Careful! That's my lucky stabbing hat! RIP GOAT.
GOAT indeed!
Loved that guy he was hilarious. May he rest in peace!
I don't think a single so called comedian on SNL in 2021 could hold a candle to Macdonald.
The OJ jokes 💕💕
I hope they make a video of the best Norm MacDonald moment's.
CZcams channel Im not norm. You'll thank me later.
Happy the dog has alot of clips that otherwise are hard to find toom
@@mangeload I have thanks to you. And he needs to do a documentary longer than 6min.
*note to self: remember to thank not Norm for keeping Norm by not being Norm and stalemating cancer
When he came back on this show as a host and he said either I got way funnier or this show sucks!! Hahahahaha should’ve played that one
Norm had a tremendous heart and you could really tell on his last appearance on Dave Letterman!
I'm not religious, and I don't know if there's a heaven or hell. If there is though, I'd like to go to whichever one all my favorite comedians are shacked up in. RIP Norm.
Nice. A surprisingly touching ending to a very funny lead-in.
Those Michael Jackson and OJ Simpson jokes were savage. I used to laugh so hard when Norm was doing weekend update
the lucky stabbing hat is probably my favorite joke on weekend update of all time. the 2nd was when norm ate will Farrell's "throw up" right off the weekend update desk lol
My favorite one is where cancer kills Norm and OJ says bye Norm tell Nicole and Ron hi
One of a kind!! You will be missed Norm!
Kudos to SNL for putting up an OJ joke. Shouldn’t have been fired.
Lorne wanted to keep him, but OJ had friends in seriously high places.
@@Smoove_J He was on Lorne's last nerve for refusing to stop calling Michael Jackson a pedophile.
If it didn't end with an OJ joke, i'd be SUPER pissed. But they included one of the best. Kudos.
Thanks Norm for those wonderful memories. RIP Norm. We miss you.
YEAHH BOYYY!!!
SNL remembers Norm.

Or so the Germans would have us believe.
Y'know, the more I hear about this Norm fella, the more I care for him.
Germans LOVE David Hasselhoff!
So much respect for norm, he did everything right even dealing with cancer and not telling people. He didn't want to be treated differently knowing he would be gone soon, something almost everyone in the world would take advantage of. RIP Norm, easily one of the best!
Condolences to Norms family and friends. May God bring them comfort. He will be missed. He was a legend in comedy. He make me laugh more than a. few time. RIP Notm I felt like we were friends
Absolutely fearless, the irony is that his passion for comedy caused him to be fired from his job, which was to be funny 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Only one of his jobs🤘
Norm is my favorate Weekend Update announcer
Chevy is still mine (and I adore Norm, but Janice aka The News and Tiny White Coffin are what Norm could really do).
I would like to recommend to everyone reading this to watch Norms show on netflix, norm macdonald has a show. Those are the best celebrity interviews I ever watched. Also all his appearances on Letterman and Conan. And everything else he created.. He was a comedy genius and a very goodhearted childlike human being. I am not the youngest person and heard about many celebrity deaths but Norms death is the first one since 1991 that made me cry.
NML was much better than the Netflix show
"childlike" That was just shtick, but he was certainly very goodhearted.
I had SUCH a crush on him back then!! Even the way he talks is funny...
Those were some of the more tamer, average Norm Weekend update jokes. Norm could get super cruel and savage with his jokes.
careful, that's my lucky stabbing joke.
That didn't even include the jokes he considered closest to perfect, like the one about Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett getting divorced.
@@timmcleaners1987 lmao
(Shown in graphic: Bill and Hillary Clinton)
Norm: Here we seem the President and the First Bitch
(Shown in graphic: Bill trailing behind Hillary walking somewhere)
Norm: Hey hey! Slow down, you bitch! Let me catch up!
Norm Macdonald: When SNL was actually funny.
That’s my lucky stabbin hat! One of his greatest.
Norm Macdonald is the best there ever was. Period.
