I'm battling earwigs right now and this has been very helpful. I'm glad to see mom's bringing their kids into the garden and excited to learn new things. Thank you for this helpful tip!
Glenn Sturgis Thank you! That little fort was just the cutest thing! And so tiny! They used wood chips from the garden to make it. I hope you have much success.
This is great advice that may save my seedlings & flowers🙏🌷🌱 I just had an interesting thought about what the attraction could be for them where I live ... House stumps that have wood rot?? Hmmm, not a nice thought! As if it's not enough of a concern ... Now I am imagining earwigs down there munching away on my rotting stumps! They will be getting replaced but not soon enough, so will have to use the canola oil in the meantime 👌
Will this work for inside the house? I’ve noticed I have a lot roaming around sometimes on the ceiling sometimes on the floor I keep finding them and I really am super tired of them !
I don’t know. Give it a try. Make sure there is no other food source around for them. They like decaying matter. Apparently they like beer too. I put out beer traps for Rollie Pollies and caught earwigs instead. 😂
My goodness my property is infested with earwigs, bet I'd be able to catch 10xs what your did 1st night. But wow I'm glad you saved your plants. I'm saving 1 in 5 or 6 seedlings in my veggies gardens. They even ear my seeds!
If I'm understanding correctly, you cut the bottle in half and put the opened top upside down into the bottom? Then maybe about 1/2 full of oil? That is AMAZING how many you caught!! I have never (or maybe one a year or two years) had them until recently. Now I'm seeing them more frequently when we get a lot of rain.
Girl these little pests are eating my squash and potatoes! I Just put these oil traps out and I hope they work. I added a little bit of tuna fish because apparently they like the smell 🤷🏻♀️ I hope your plants recover well! :)
i have them on my terrace... so i just leave a cup with oil and that is it? how does it work? they drown in that or they get poisoned by the oil? if they were able to get up there to get in, why dont they just get out?
Last year we planted things and they just disappeared when they sprouted. This year we noticed the earwigs and made these traps as wells as going out at night with 70% rubbing alcohol and water spray. Saved 90% of the garden.
They looove cat food so I’m going to try oil mixed with cat food residue and try some different methods in the tin. Bet you could use mainly water with an inch of oil on top too if you wanted to save even more money
Your living area is beautiful! Thanks for sharing! I am about to go set some traps in my garden now. I have way more this year than last but I think it’s because I have so much more bark and mulch laid down. I can’t believe how many you caught!
The Busy Brown Angel That’s funny it must be the year of the earwig! i have my oil traps set so I’ll let you know how it goes! Also I think it’s awesome you also call the other one a potato bug. I thought that was just a Utah thing. I hear most people call them rolly poleys
I wonder if a person could put mostly water in the bottom of the container and put 1/4 or 1/2 inch of oil on top with a little soy or Worcestershire sauce in with it. I got a bottle of canola oil especially for the earwig traps. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Did you add soy or Worstershire to the cooking oil? What worked the best? Did you try the Bug & Slug bait? I have the food stuff for bait but not the chemical type bait. Thanks L J Bush : D
Hey! So I battled all summer last year with cans of Raid for earwigs. I want to step up my game and make traps. Is it just canola oil? Thank you in advance!
I’m battling them In the house. First had mold in the basement now that’s gone and the past few weeks I’m seeing earwigs everywhere to the point I’m finding like 10 a day in my house crawling up the wall even! The house will soon have to burn
@@garyedwards5624 I’m sorry to hear that. Look for their source of food. They eat decaying matter. Check for wet or rotting wood, paper, and plant matter.
kfarr Oh no! I hope the exterminator was able to help you. Hopefully you’ll find out what they are feeding on and eliminate it. It’s usually decaying matter.
Hi, I got so many even after fumigating inside and out... did the fugimation helped on your home? I'm just wondering, maybe I'll get a different one this time. Thank you
AndJustLikeThat Hi , we did everything. Sevin in the lawn, bug bombs all over the inside, some sort of other bug juice all over the perimeter of the house. They were EVERYWHERE still. I found clusters in the basement. I even found them in my bed!!! The only thing that truly helped was calling an exterminator. Its been a few wks since he was here and I have only seen a few inside the house. He is going to come for a retreatment since it is included in the price I paid. It was like $180 and so worth it because those little buggers invaded my home so bad! The exterminator said he never saw anything like it ... the oil traps help , keep doing those.
@@kimfarr87 Thank you so much for your reply! Yes, I found one on my bed and I'm still traumatized by. I'll get the exterminator again and do the oil traps. You just gave me a bit of hope!! Thank you!
AndJustLikeThat im glad I gave you hope and help you not feel alone. Most people talk about the bugs being in their garden, not home!!! Another thing when you bomb them or exterminate , is they die off slowly over 7-10 days. Some might die right away, but some might take a few days. I cleaned dead bugs up for like a week after the exterminator came. Good luck!!!!
Thank you, and thank you! I hope you have great success. Keep in mind that they eat decaying matter and they congregate under wood piles, wood chips, old paper, and leaf piles. They also hide under flowerpots, bags of soil, and damp welcome mats.
I’m sorry to hear that. Check around your property for wood debris, vegetation, or large amounts of paper. They eat decomposing matter. They’ll stay around as long as there is a food source. The source may not be on your property, but around you. 💚

Since it’s only cooking oil it wouldn’t hurt to try.
@@thebusybrownangel5829 okay, thanks so much!!!
Wondering if birds would eat what you caught?
I don’t think they would consume the oil.
So basically you cut a bottle in half filled both halves with canola oil & stuck both of them in the ground???
On another comment, she said she used the tops of the bottles for another purpose, and just used the bottoms for the bug traps.
Do you think my frog will eat the earwigs after I catch them like this?
