I was always under the impression that the clones started out as stormtroopers, and as they died off they started recruiting and stopped cloning.

No Star wars was all written in one draft. That's why Lucas definitely meant to have an incestual kiss in the first ever film.
It always confused me that the kiss was never removed in the special editions. That’s one of the few removals that makes sense.
I personally prefer the current canon explanation that the clones were discarded not long after ep3. It makes for a much more dramatic and sad ending for the clone war. Even “the winning” army were just pawns for The Emperor and were made trash the minute he was done with them

I hate it and one of the reasons I don’t like Bad Batch a whole lot. Makes Star Wars feel too basic generic, cheap and black and white. I love complexity and dilemmas, I don’t like it when all the good guys are always good and the bad guys have always been bad 100% of the time. It’s not compelling storytelling and makes no sense. Makes the empire hella unstable and weak. Plus Star Wars hasn’t ever been like that, it’s the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker a good man that was flawed, having those flaws exploited and turned bad. I was so excited to see Bad Batch, the imperial clone perspective only to be so disappointed and turned off to realise only 2 episodes were that and the best episode in the whole show was one of them in Solitary Clone but they even shaft Cody and Crosshair. It also doesn’t make sense because there’s still clones serving the empire willingly by ANH. You see one of them on screen in Crag when Ben uses his mindtrick while on the landspeeder. I love Filoni but I have 2 massive issues with him, his inability and outright refusal to kill characters when it makes the most narrative sense (and would be so impactful especially because he’s so good at selecting gut punches and emotional moments which makes me cheated even more because he shouldn’t be afraid of it) and his insistence on black and white storytelling. I hate the glorification of Mandalorian and gangster culture that has been exhibited through his and Favreau work in the Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett. Bo Katan’s turn to laughing as she burned civilians in Death Watch to noble hero makes no sense. I loved the Mandalorian’s as ruthless badasses or bounty hunters, not so gooder rebel allies

@@protector_of_the_realmsI agree. Making all the Clones good guys and underdogs not only doesn't make sense from a storytelling perspective, but it also comes across as fanservice-y and was obviously made to please the people who are overly attached to the clones.
I remember hearing somewhere after AOTC came out that stormtroopers being clones explained Leia's line from ANH: "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" ...because being clones, all stormtroopers would be the same height.
They also have almost identical voices. Back then the only way to tell the two apart was that clones were all cg

George Lucas changes his mind on a whim. Remember Darth Mauls return and his underworld arc? Yeah that was originally meant for the Georges sequel trilogy berfore he changed his mind again and had them put it in The Clone Wars instead.
And don't forget the wild shit he said about the dozens of films he had in the works and the four or five trilogies we were gonna get, or the fact that the OT was made quite literally "in media res" on a whim when ESB came out, haha.
George never changed his mind on that. TCW came out before Lucas sold the company in 2012. The idea of making Maul the villain of his sequel trilogy likely grew out of Maul's return in TCW, not the other way around.
@@Darthpsychonis i somehow doubt that. The treatments that george gave to disney before he left don’t mention maul at all from what i remember. And even if that’s the case, i have kind of come around that anyway. We got a lot of great stuff from Maul in Clone Wars and even Rebels. His character has served his purpose well and i see no reason he should have been in those movies.
@@DorsenFilm There is nothing to doubt. Lucas said in the Star Wars Archives I-III that in his treatments for the sequels that he sold to Disney that Maul was meant to be the main villain with Darth Talon as his apprentice, but that Disney chose not to go in that direction. Even if they had changed everything else, Maul would have made for a more logical villain rather than Snoke or undercutting the whole saga by resurrecting Palpatine.

Thank you for this, I noticed that in A New Hope all the Stormtroopers sound the same. I pointed it out to a friend but he just dismissed it because ESB and ROTJ had the stormtroopers have different voices.

Growing up in the 80's always wondered if the Storm Troopers were clones or droids. Princess Leia's line, "aren't you kind of short to be a Storm Trooper" and the fact they never show them without the uniform, seemed to hint at those...

I remember the mission in the OG Battlefront II where there was a Clone uprising on Kamino and so the Emperor decided to rollout recruitment.
Then you've got Bad Batch having it so the Emperor just wants to turn his loyal citizens into Stormtroopers and stop wasting money on Clones.
Both really interesting ways of doing it, and all because the Stormtroopers don't sound like Temaura Morrison in the OT lol

I was always fond of the idea that after order 66 the clone army stuck around for the early Empire but they were gradually replaced with other, more varied templates then eventually recruitment all together once enough time had passed that the galaxy would willingly enlist in droves. The stormtrooper corps as a mix of forgotten veterans, hundreds of cloned templates, green loyalists and galactic rabble is a pretty nice idea.

I think that's the first time I've heard HelloGreedo swear.
I always thought that some of the Clones turned into Strorn troopers, however a lot of them were just people hired by the Empire. Since this was never confirmed in the movies, I'm ok with this being retconed (if you even count it as one). I especially love how The Bad Batch explains why Clones were phased out and makes that the central plot of Season 1. To me those are the best retcons, ones that lead to great stories that previously would have been impossible.
I preferred the concept of Stormtroopers being clones because it’s such a dark aspect of the universe. An army that continued to be enslaved to serve an empire who didn’t care for them.
I guess that concept is still in the Star Wars universe, its just shifted to the prequel era.
I like not being clones, because it shows that the Empire got regular people to fight for them. It makes the war seem more real, and gives things more moral ambiguity.
@@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770honestly I feel like the only Jango Clones that would still be serving in the Imperial Military would be the ones who'd be most loyal to Palpatine and do classified missions like the Coruscant Guard, Clone Commandos, ARC Troopers and Clone Assassins, as well as remnants of the 501st still working for Vader. And even then, all those Clone leftovers would've retired or passed away by the time of TESB.
When I was a kid I had always assumed the Stormtroopers WEREN’T clones. My main reasoning was that in the OT, none of them had identical voices nor the accents. So I thought the implication was that clones were eventually phased out in favor or recruits. I guess little kid me was right.

The reason why the change happened is because why are the officers not clones and why could Luke join the empire if they just used Clones. That's why 2005 Battlefront 2 and and Bad Batch show the Empire stop using clones. On top of that a lot people just thought they were notmal people.
Well there were some officers in the republic along side clones on Star destroyers so it’s not that far fetched
There could also be different clone templates, another idea mooted by George, to help explain stormtrooper height variations in the OT.
The Stormtroopers are also not all the same height in the OT.

In some of the Star Wars EU books like the Jedi Academy Trilogy, they mention a stormtrooper training academy on Carida, so I had always assumed the stormtroopers were non-clones.
You wouldn’t be incorrect Greedo. Before Disney restated canon and we got to see the end of the clone wars as well as the bad batch and such. It was common assumption many clones were still stormtroopers. Even Hasbro action figures featured clone heads underneath the removable helmets.

I always had a clear understanding that the clones became phased out even as a kid. It was kinda obvious to me that although a huge amount of the stormtroopers were clones, the army started being replaced with citizens as time went on. Aside from the obvious voice differences, I think I became aware of this when playing the original 2005 Battlefront II campaign. I'm pretty sure the clone voice that monologues in-between missions mentioned that the clones started being replaced and the cloning facilities shut down after a Kaminoan rebellion, which I always considered canon at the time.

I remember my friend showing me this exact magazine when we were kids growing up in the 2000's that used to belong to his dad, and it's kind of lived in the back of my mind since them, until I eventually began to wonder if it was even real at all or if I just imagined it and how it talks about stormtroopers being clones.
Also of note is in Battlefront II (2005) that it’s stated that the “future troopers would be cloned from a variety of templates”, referring to an event earlier on in the Empire’s reign where the Kaminoans rebelled with a new batch of Jango Clones. This is Legends though, take that as you will.
George Lucas gave us the line ‘Always in motion is the future.’ So as annoying as some of the changes are that he’s made over the years… I accept that things change. It’s a pretty major theme of Star Wars.
well in OG Battlefront 2 the campaign says exactly that, after the order 66 mission, stating they were given new weapons, blazing new ships and "shiny new armor" it was directly implied that stormtroopers were at least in the beginning, Clones in stormtrooper armor.

From going by the films, I once thought Stormtroopers & Clones were the same until I saw Rebels, & other canon. I think one crucial detail to think about is the fact that the stormtroopers in the original trilogy had different voices than that of Temuera Morrison, who voiced the clones. & the only voice Morrison did in the Special Editions was Boba Fett, which was to keep with the continuity of the prequels. & yeah, George always had a plan & original vision, but even that can be changed. Like Luke & Leia for instance. Star Wars is always changing, & I think with the Expanded Universe it was a bit more broader to what is considered canon back in the day. For me, I always go to Episode 1-6 & Clone Wars because George was involved in them. It’s quite interesting seeing different things to be discussed & debated in Star Wars.
If I’m not mistaken, SWG originally wouldn’t make stormtroopers playable because AotC made them clones.

I have a feeling at some point, this was Lucas' intention. But due to the fact that clones age rapidly, other creators decided it made more logical sense to have Stormtroopers be recruited.
‘05 BF2 had the best explanation. The Jango Fett clones turn into Stormtroopers with non-clone officers to replace Jedi Officers. When Kaminoans tried to rebel, the Empire started cloning from multiple templates to avoid another rebellion
After decades of thought on this here’s how I think it works best for me.
Student enters Imperial Academy.
Academy gets blood/DNA sample from student.
Student gets cloned.
Student graduates and serves or gets a job elsewhere etc etc.
This could happen with all students or just the exceptional ones. Training could make average people good…..or at least good enough.

In the original Battlefront 2 game they explicitly said in the campaign mode that Stormtroopers were clones.
So the change to being human recruits was decently recent.
Not quite. Even the campaign states that the Empire started recruiting normal humans after the Kaminoan rebellion. The 501st Legion from that point onward was comprised partially of leftover clones and partially of human recruits.

Correction: I just rewatched that mission, and the narrator says the new recruits were actually "cloned from a variety of templates" due to the Empire deeming an army of identical clones too "susceptible to corruption." My bad.
I not only got this implication from the movies as you literally see their armor evolve into the storm trooper helmet but having grown up playing the hell out of the Battlefront II Rise of the Empire campaign where you follow the clone's journey all the way to the battle of Hoth. Although I grew up with stormtroopers being clones, I'm also fine with what we have now even though I don't think we see enough of why someone would join up with the empire.
As a kid, when the Clone Wars were mentioned in the first film and the fact that the Stormtroopers all had pretty much the same voice, I figured they might have all been clones. Or at least most of them.
I always had this feeling, and certainly with the way Attack Of The Clones set things up, heavily implied the Stormtroopers were Clones, especially with the army scene with the imperial march, and by the armour looking more like Stormtroopers by ROTS.
But yeah, definitely seeing how it changed. And I've adored how the Clones have been depicted in all media, and in fact makes it more tragic with how they were tossed aside
I am aware that Return of The Jedi used to be known as Revenge of The Jedi with T-Shirts also the Trailer calling it by its original name instead of the current title, we all call it now. I get what you're saying by Star Wars is always changing.

I remember from the 90s and the early 2000s that Han Solo and Kyle Katarn's backstories in the EU said that both of them were Stormtroopers at some point. So I never thought they were all clones. I assumed the Clone Troopers in AtoC were just ment to be the first Stormtroopers.
Growing up during the prequel/special edition era, I never thought the stormtroopers were clones because they all sounded different. Lucas dubbed over the original Boba Fett voice because of the clone retcon, but he didn't dub over the stormtrooper voices, so i always assumed stormtroopers were all just different recruited soldiers. I guess in hindsight the stormtroopers could've just been clones of different people (which might've made more since honestly) but i'm glad we now have shows like Rebels and The Bad Batch that tell the story about the transition from clone troopers to stormtroopers. It's just so tragic how the clones were discarded by the empire.
This is great. It goes to show that 1) George was not a saint like some irresponsible CZcamsrs claim or seem to genuinely believe, but also
2) Canon REALLY does not actually matter.
Ah the lore of the Star Wars fandom
This is probably gonna sound like a dumb comparison, since it compares some real life stuff to fiction, but this reminds me a lot about stuff I've encountered in the military aviation enthusiast community over the years:
I've been interested in a plane called the IAI Kfir, a sub-variant of the Mirage with a J79 powering it instead of a SNECMA Atar.
Throughout all my time of being interested in it (going back maybe 7-8 years ago), I've seen so many debates spread around about what it was capable of carrying /equipping, its systems, stuff like that.
A lot of it was speculation (as was information on that aircraft shown in books like "Jane's: all the world's aircraft) since there isn't much publically available information from primary sources floating around.
I still see debates on if the C.7 variant could carry/use the AGM-65 Maverick, GBU-8 HOBOs, and AGM-45 Shrike lol, and I'll still run into arguments about whether or not it used the Elta EL/M-2001B Radar Rangefinder, or EL/M-2021B Pulse-Doppler multimode radar.
To add to the confusion, in the OG Battlefront 2 the narrator mentions that the stormtroopers are in fact clones, but the Jango Fett template was switched out for a variety of templates.
There's another source of George directly stating he intended for stormtroopers to be clones. In the DVD audio commentary for Attack of the Clones, during the scene when Jango Fett bumps his head when entering his ship after fighting Obi-Wan on Kamino, George comments that the reason why he included that little reference to A New Hope is that he thought it would be funny to imply stormtroopers were generically predisposed to hitting their head because it was a trait they got from Jango. I think it's pretty safe to assume during the entire production of the prequel trilogy he always intended for stormtroopers to be clones, which is why we were never shown them getting slowly phased out in Revenge of the Sith. If you watch the films from 1-6 without consuming any outside material it's the logical assumption to make
Strong evidence too is that the fact that the Phase 2 Clone Armour resembles the Stormtrooper armour a lot more. And that was the intention too, that by removing the colours the idea being that when the Empire is formed they're left as the Stormtroopers we know
I thought this since episode 2, and I figure the Bad Batch might actually show where some troopers were originally clones. Yet to see the final season of Bad Batch but maybe it will loosen up things on exactly how many clones remained in or were freshly baked up for the Empire.

Also in Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) you play the campaign as a clone trooper in the republic who becomes a stormtrooper after the rise of the empire. I definitely think that for most of the 2000's, stormtroopers were supposed to be clones. I remember seeing The Force Awakens trailer and seeing the different heights of the First Order stormtroopers and being like "oh wow they're not clones anymore", and that was in 2014
To me, even in the later part of the 2000's, I always thought it was implied that the stormtroopers were clones. I mean, they all kinda sound the same in the OT. However, in the mid 2010's I think we got a confirmation from the new canon that stormtrooper were not clones. Cause in legends the explanation is kinda all over the place, from BF2, comics, etc.
Technically some stormtroopers were aging clones. Tarkin novel had a Jango clone stormtrooper named Crest in Vader's security detail and Smuggler's Run novel even had a clone ISB agent name Torrent that was hunting Han Solo.
I mean… it was kind of obvious what George was implying when he puts the flippin Imperial March at the end of Attack of the Clones.
Also, Owen being Obi-Wan’s brother is not necessarily an accepted canonical fact, but it’s absolutely still a possible theory and works with head-canon, especially after he mentions his brother to Leia in the Kenobi show.

But this quote is also from the game where the clones knew all along that they would betray the jedi, so I don't think it can be considered canon.
I think the EU compromise, where Empire cloned troops (on various planets and from various sources), but also got volunteers, made the most sense. They'd have a battle-ready, scientifically designed trooper core, but also patriotic recruits training to become elite soldiers. And then there were Imperial Army troopers, who were hirees on all planets of the Empire to defend them locally.
That Owen Lars being Obi Wan's brother thing is interesting, I've never heard of that, I'm a bit younger of a fan (25) so that might've been a bit before my time.
I think I remember it being written in the old Star Wars Technical Journal from 1995 that stormtroopers were a mix of volunteers, conscripts and clones (though I think it referred to clones being a rumor). I don't have a copy and haven't seen one in over 10 years so I may be remembering it wrong. But if you need a lot of manpower you take it where ever you can get it, right?
It’s like why were the lightsabers heavier in the OT? Mark Hamill said in one interview that George Lucas told them that it was like Excalibur and they had to use to hands to hold it. There is at least one other interview with George explaining this afaik. So he just changed it and the idea that they were old in the OT never makes any sense because Luke wasn’t old in the OT. I recently saw a video of someone who claims George never made a mistake and some of the things he said are true but he apparently doesn’t know a lot of other things. I know it’s the nature of Star Wars. It wasn’t meant to be this big and George didn’t create his canon db for years so can’t really blame him plus he was older and divorced when he did the prequels

I could see early on this being a thing.
🤔 . . . Here is where I stand on this issue, preferably in some alternate _Star Wars_ reality, thanks to a _Rebels_ episode titled _A World Between Worlds_ . There seems to be a bit of confusion between whether or not ALL stormtroopers are either clones or not; if they’re Fett clones or not. My stance is that they’re neither; not all stormtroopers are clones nor are all of them not being clones; it’s a mixed bag. You’d have regular people, more brawns than brains (loyalty reasons), joining the Imperial military as a type of testing/proving ground to see if their genetic information is worthy of cloning. And this kind of thing could’ve started right around the time Order 66 was given & the Republic transitioned into the Empire; that genetic samples were taken before, the loyalists were being tested on the battlefield, & the cloning happened after Palpatine became the Emperor. Thus, I wouldn’t be surprised, especially when expressed through _Star Wars: Visions_ , that members of the Rebel Alliance would find stormtroopers, or other personnel who’ll cover their heads, who’re their clones…
Talk about head cannon, I was 8 when I watched it, and I imagined the force as like a cookie. It was balanced because it was 2 Jedi (obiwan and Yoda), and sith (Vader and emperor). I went into ep 1 thinking the Jedi were overall pretty weak compared to sith, because there were thousands of Jedi sharing the force, while only two sith.
Lot of evidence against my view, but reading the Bane books later, the efficacy of the rule of two made a ton of sense to me.
But, more relevant, why not clones *and* recruits. Doesn't have to be either or.
Star Wars fans are really great at revisionist history, they'll just go with the thing that best supports whatever narrative they buy into instead of looking at the facts objectively.
Yes. I dont know about Star Wars, but I remember when they auditioned for The Empire Strikes Back they were specifically looking for men around 6ft. In the 2 first Star Wars movies the Stormtroopers are very simular in height. This is discarded in Return of the Jedi.
The campaign of the original Battlefront 2 would also lead one to believe that the Clones become Stormtroopers. I'm not sure when I learned that wasn't actually the case.
If one Stormtrooper bangs his head on a door where others do not. They can't be clones.
The identity of the Stormtroopers always struck me as incredibly stupid, especially when the Force Awakens teaser dropped and John Boyega received all those disgusting comments. It was established both in Legends and the current canon that the first wave of Stormtoopers were Clones, eventually getting phased out by recruits.

After growing up The Clone Wars, if the Stormtroopers were all Clones, the Empire would’ve won.
There’s still a few stormtroopers who are clones by the time of the OT in canon. Crag I believe his name is is one of them that you see on screen in ANH (when Obi-wan, Luke and the droids get halted by a squad in the landspeeder). But I’m not a fan of Bad Batch’s handling of the story so far, phasing them out so quick and being severely mistreated which would leave the empire unstable and weak. I love the concept of the Empire discarding them and them having to serve an organisation that has no respect for them but how it’s presented in Bad Batch is way too basic and ridiculous for my liking so far

Fascinating video though, I had no idea Owen was ever considered to be Obi-Wans brother. Adds layers to Obi-Wan in show saying he thought he had a brother once.
The revisionist history within this fanbase on actual canon and real world events is crazy though.
When I saw Episode II, I thought the Stormtroopers were Clones. After seeing Episode III and playing the campaign to Battlefront 2, I accepted that some of the Stormtroopers were Clones and some were not. Simple.

I like to think if you can fit in the Armour, Follow the Ideology and Pass the Boot Camp you get hired... but the Bulk of the Army is a production line of Clones, for years we speculated about one piece of Dialogue " your father blah blah the Clone Wars Blah Blah" from Ben Kenobi in A New Hope. what was this Clone Wars he was talking about ? as a kid i was intrigued what this war was, now we know.
Is it true that there was fans who, before Revenge of the Sith came out, believed that Palpatine and Sidious were two different people?

My question is why don't some people believe this ? To me it's because some people hated the prequels.
This interpretation was pretty heavily reinforced by the videogames and cartoons that were releasing alongside Attack of the Clones, IIRC. Unlike in the Clone Wars series and subsequent works they didn't have the clones all share a common voice actor who was mimicking Temuera Morrison's accent; they brought in Temuera himself to voice _some_ clones but there was a strong implication that _most_ clones had varied voices and accents, much like Stormtroopers -- playing into the assumption that, yes, the prequels were establishing that Stormtroopers were clones.
It wasn't until around Revenge of The Sith that the EU's stance on it shifted to "Stormtroopers _were_ clones but they eventually stopped producing them and switched to volunteers and conscripts," presumably to try and make things fit with prior EU works that featured non-cloned Stormtrooper characters.
Not sure if I prefer Stormtrooper as clones or regular people.
I prefer the idea that the empire started out with the clones as stormtroopers. But as time went on, the advanced aging the kaminoans put into effect didn’t stop so the clones kept growing old and dying too quickly so they phased them out in place of recruiting normal people

To me the stormtroopers are still clones thanks to Battlefront 2 for solidifying it
