    Some varieties of chestnut fall free of the burr when ripe, while others stay in the burr as the burr drops from the tree. The ones that drop in the burr have better resilience from squirrels and birds. That said, always bring tongs, you may need to move the burrs even when the the nuts free drop.

    Had local wild chestnuts a few years ago and became horribly ill. I guess they have to be blanched or something due to toxins.
