    I was a very close friend of Austin. This story is even weirder to us because he had a long time girlfriend who lived in California (not the girl he kidnapped, someone else we know personally who is of age) that he visited for Thanksgiving and committed this crime on the way back home. We were under the impression that he bought the house for them to live in. He's been talking about how he wants to provide for and protect her for years. As you can imagine, she's confused and heartbroken. She said he seemed very normal and that they had a great time on his visit. It's so strange, because I would have trusted this man with my life. He took care of me when I was sick and hallucinating once, made sure I was safe. Stayed at my apartment with my husband and I frequently. We grew up in Appalachia and we were all dirt poor, so when he got out and became an officer, we were all so proud of him. Needless to say, we're all shocked and broken. Still trying to reckon with a person I considered a best friend being such a terrible person without us even knowing.

    About 10 years ago, early on a Saturday morning, we had the FBI at the door. They wanted to talk to my 12 year old grandson who had apparently been in contact with a predator online. We had no idea that he had been texting with a person who said they were an 18 year old girl. It turned out that it was a male predator who was contacting young boys all over the country. It was a very scary and traumatizing experience for my grandson!

    I so agree that cybersecurity should be taught in schools. My son is almost 20, and he is a gamer. When he was little, I forced myself to learn these video games so that “playing with mom” was cool instead of mom being dorky and since my house was the hangout house (that was as intentional as I could make it because I was blessed enough to be able to be a stay at home mom), I got to listen in on the gaming and the others they were playing with online. I explained to the boys the danger that was out there and they listened to me (thank goodness). However, it hit home big time when a grown man slid into the game and started asking questions to the kids online. Questions like where are you playing from? What’s the weather like where you are? I am sure he was surprised to hear a grown ass woman tell him to get off line and leave these kids alone, no adult asks children questions like that! He called me a B**** and logged off. The boys were about 10 at the time and they went real quiet until one of my son’s friends said “Dang, you sure scared him!! He was probably a pervert!” My son told me that night that they all talked about it later that day when they were playing baseball and they all agreed that if I hadn’t been sitting there with them, they might have answered his questions because the questions weren’t “pervy” and when I explained to them that he was trying to get information in where they were, it scared them all. What the boys didn’t know was how terrifying that was for ME to see how easy it was to gain access to information from a child. Being there to stop it and teach my son and his friends was worth the immense headaches I got learning how to play video games at 45 years old!!!! I was am an older mama and the only video games I ever played cost a quarter at an arcade! My sweet son told me years later that he appreciated me doing that and even though I “sucked” at playing, his friends enjoyed trying to teach me 😂

      You teach them to pay attention to their instincts, and you make sure to build a relationship with strong communication and trust, so that they always feel like they can talk things through with you if they have a bad feeling or are just not sure how to process situations/circumstances. You teach them to know themselves, and feel strength in who they are, and then you teach them about healthy relationships and internet safety.
      You don't need to scare them, or feed their anxiety, to make them strong and intuitive.

    • @notarat9303

      Communication with your children is so important, it's not just "do this because I said so" tell them the truth, it doesn't have to be traumatic for them but explain to them why they shouldn't do dangerous things. I just explained to one of the kids I work with about fire hazards (bc ofcourse kids are gonna create fire hazards) and I just did it in a friendly matter, told him how we were teaching him abt firefighters and that we need them to be able to come in if something bad happens. He completely understood and stopped. Kids are smarter than we give them credit for

    • @cjb2749
      @cjb2749 Před rokem +5

      @@notarat9303 100% agree. Communication is SO IMPORTANT. Just telling them 'no' doesn't help them understand why, and if they don't understand 'why,' then you're not giving them the tools that they need in order to make smart decisions on their own, and they're going to develop a habit of looking to others to tell them what to do. The last thing you want to do is teach your kids to find other people to lead them through life.

Because of her contact with him , they questioned her for quite awhile. He was from Missouri but had come to our area for the girl in the hotel.
    HE WAS ONLY 18 MILES FROM MY GRANDDAUGHTER! She is not even 14 yet!!! It's way scary out there guys!!! The sad truth is these kind of cops don't slip thru the radar at all. That is a common fallacy we are made to believe.
      The exams they give hopefuls does test iq and gives a psychological profile indicating levels of narcissism or psychopathy. But it's not to weed them out; it's to rule out normies.
      No one with an iq over 100 is considered, and possessing anti-social tendencies combine for a winning combo. Reactive, smart enough to follow orders without questioning illegal assignments and little to no conscience. He fit the bill perfectly, but he went rogue.

He knew not to show our house or street, but didn't think about not having a business 4 houses away in the back ground. Thankfully i saw it as he was walking into school 15 minutes later and i took it down. We talked about it over and over the entire year so he would understand that he needs to be aware of what he's showing around him at all times. My grandparents took me away from my mother when I was 7 and when I was 9, my grandfather died 30 days to the day of his brain cancer diagnosis and I went to my aunt and uncle who had my 2 younger cousins that are really like my little brother and sister. You can say that my childhood was difficult. However, I didn't have to worry about some online catfish murdering my entire family... I am lost for words! This reminds me of that little girl in Wisconsin that was kidnapped after watching that guy murder her parents in the middle of the night. He saw her getting on a school bus ONCE, and set his plan in motion. Thank the Lord, she escaped after several months trapped under his bed... The worst part of all this is that I only see things getting worse and I'm already horrified!

    Absolutely heartbreaking and at Christmas too😢. My heart hurts so deep for this young lady. I pray she realizes this is in no way, shape, or form, her fault. She did absolutely nothing wrong, she actually did everything right but there are monsters out there lurking. God bless this baby girl.

    This guy lived less than a mile from my house where he purchased the house from Gordon who lived across the street! Keep up with this story it’s getting even better and a little stinky!! This was a big shock to all of us here since it’s such a small town!! I’m so glad you covered this!!
