    If you are gonna put an LED lighting system on your bike, consider hooking them up to a separate battery in your Frunk…

    I know this blog was a few months ago but I just wanted to comment about the LED lights. I have lights from one of the companies Shawn mentioned here. 2 of the lights shorted out and sent me into limp home mode. Disconnected them and replaced the fuses and now all is well again. Wish I had seen this before I purchased and installed them.

      @ShawnSmoak  Před rokem

      The Yuasa YTX24HL-BS AGM batteries supplied by BRP come filled, sealed and charged (though should be tested and/or charged before installation), otherwise the same battery purchased elsewhere comes with the specific acid pack that is filled and sealed by the end user. Very important to follow the included instructions for filling and charging the new battery..!

    Hmmm, I have added LED strips myself like that and never had a single issue. Not for riding lights and brake lights anyway. Turn signals can be a problem though as you can get a fast blink. But with that said never had VCM errors or anything! I have to assume that specific LED strip that was added to the trunk lid shorted or had some load problem, or whoever wired it screwed up on doing so. MAN MANY Spyder owners have added the HMT trunk brake light and the strips you show in the video to the back end. All of them tap into the existing light harness. Oh and Shawn just to clarify, they do not have chips in them to fool the Can-Buss. They are just lights. But like anything if you over load or under load the light circuits, you can have issues I agree 100%. The Spyder monitors that stuff and reports errors. This is more to tell you that you have a light out e.g. like a fast blink on the turn signal. So again that light she added, which by the way I have never seen sold as a after market add-on, obviously was too much for the Spyder. It would be interesting to know where she got that light strip from and why it caused VCM errors. My guess was off the shelf like Auto Zone or something. I suspect it was a loading issue with that light strip.

    Enjoyed the video Shawn. I would really appreciate your view. I am studying a ad for a 2012 Spyder RT SE5 model, for sale by owner. New rear tire and bearings, new brakes front and rear, complete service by a Can Am dealer in April 2018. At a cost of $1,750.00 Canadian. It has 30,400 KM. Mostly all blue in color. Owner is asking $17,500.00 Canadian. A good deal? Or would you go for a newer pre owned model? As this model year has the smaller and less smooth engine, as compared to the newer models, correct? If so starting at what model year would you chose?Thank You Shawn.

      Not as long as you tap into the bike's 12v system. Make sure you avoid the CANbus system..! Many kits made for the Spyder's have proper wiring and instructions for installing those type adapters, and are quite safe if done correctly.

      Shawn Smoak Thanks for all you do! I have learned a great deal from your channel. A Couple questions: 1. What is it about Custom Dynamics that makes them ok? Is it that their LED's are better quality? The don't use a module of any kind to "trick" the CAN bus, they just plug right in. I have turn signals still in the box - debating whether to send back.
      2. I also pulled a Signal Dynamics Back Off XP module off my old cruiser, thinking I could use it on the F3 - debating there also any advice? I do this to be seen along w/hi-vis gear. I am certain NJ/NYC metro drivers are in the running for the nation's worst!

    Do you think the cambus system is to help prevent after market accessories working properly & encourage the consumer buying oem parts? My indian throws up the occasional fault code for no known reason, I'm really not a fan of it.
    I was told from a Polaris tech if I want to upgrade to oem led lights I would have to get a new vcm! As a vcm flash was not possible, not very forward thinking

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  Před 9 lety

      barebones2004 - The CANbus system is actually a very robust and reliable system, and has nothing to do with accessory kits. The problems arise from accessories that were never intended for the bike, being forced in. If not done properly, and with quality components, fault codes can be thrown. Some codes that the system may see as a severe threat to your safety, which puts the bike into a Limp Home mode. If your Indian is throwing codes, they are being recorded and can be retrieved to find the source of the problem.
      We recently had a customer with a 2014 Indian that wanted his unit reflashed for LED install, but there was some kind of issue... I wasn't the tech working on the unit, so I'm not sure what the issue was, but I did hear something about it not being able to be reflashed...

    hi Shawn.....im in Australia....I had to swap out a long block on 2012rtltd....bike will not start...buds fault is P280A and C1183.....will these known fault codes stop the bike from starting.,,,Plenty crank amps in battery....plenty spark on leads.....plenty fuel....she just wont fire

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  Před 2 lety +1

      The C1183 Pillion Seat Sensor will put you in a limp mode if you attempt to ride it, but no effect on the engine running. The P280A Shift Angle Sensor code will have to be calibrated with BUDS before riding as well, but the engine has to be running to set it, and will not prevent starting.
      Is the fuel pressure building correctly? You can run the fuel pump with BUDS. Do you hear the injectors clicking when firing them through BUDS? When testing spark through BUDS, is the correct coil/spark plug firing during test? Compression, fuel and correctly timed spark makes them go vroom vroom… Lol
      Hope you get it sorted out, I know that can be very frustrating!
      Good Luck! Thanks!! 👍

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  Před 9 lety

      southfang78 - The rear brake pads on the pre-2013 Spyder (BRP went to Brembo brakes in 2013) fit quite loosely in the rear caliper and guide pins. Because of this the pads wear ever so slightly uneven under forward braking. When you back up, the pads are going against the wear and they vibrate at a high frequency, making that noise. It doesn't hurt anything, it's just annoying or maybe embarrassing...

      I can't speak for other states but in MN unless there is a yield sign for on ramp traffic it is a shared responsibility to ensure a safe merge. The traffic getting on should be looking in mirrors and over shoulder to gauge traffic on hwy AND traffic on hwy should make room for traffic getting on if possible. Got this directly from a veteran insurance crash investigator/adjuster. Also, I've got over 1.5 million miles as a truck driver.

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  Před 5 lety +2

      Not knowing what year and model you have, I take some guesses. 2013 and older, you need to make sure the small ground wire got re-installed with the main ground cable (they fall out of sight during battery swap), as this can cause all kinds of system issues. 2008~2019 make sure that any accessory or charger wires are not between the battery posts and main battery cables. The battery terminals must be tight, like 10Nm tight!!! Of course the terminals and cables should be clean and dielectric grease used.
      Thanks Steve!

But like anything if you do not wire things correctly the ECM can pick up issues. I do not know how this break light was wired but after adding my own trunk lid break light strips on more than one spyder, I can tell you this is not an issue if done correctly. Sorry Shawn I love you buddy but you are incorrect the lights are on the can-bus.
