  • Riding Impressions From a 2-Wheeled Veteran of 42 Years!
    After some email and comments about the Can-Am Spyders, I thought I'd do a quick vlog about what it's like to ride a Spyder. For those who have never had the chance and may not understand that they are very safe and just as fun as a motorcycle.
    Thanks for watching!

    Watched and enjoyed your video. I'm 76 and ridden about everything over the last 45 years including BMW RT 1150 and 1800 GW. I just picked up a 2015 RTL this past weekend having never even had a test ride before and did my first short test ride today. It's going to be a period of adjustment (short me thinks) but Spydo and me are going to get along just fine. Thanks for your excellent video.

    Hey can am riders. Quess what ? I just purchased a 09 spyder. Here's a true story. I have a gsxr 1100+ and a Kawasaki drag bike. My wife of today has never had the luxury of going and doing the things in my past like bike meets, drag racing, traveling on bikes. So I decided since she would be scared to death she wouldn't be able to hang as well as I didn't feel like fighting the movement of an inexperienced passenger I decided to try this and she loves it and so do I. I've only had it for a week this coming Saturday. I'm going to can am on. 🙌

    I was invited to ride a can am at my local motorcycle dealership. I've been riding motorcycles for many years, started in the 60's and only ride two wheel motorcycles. When I got on an RT it took a bit to get use to,but once you take it out on the road,you get use to riding with the 3 wheels. I had a blast riding this new bike. I will buy one buy not going to give up riding my 2 wheeler anytime soon...

    Hey Shawn, I've had my 2015 Spyder RT SE6 Limited for 2 weeks now. Weather is less than perfect here in NJ, but I'm getting out whenever I can. I keep reading these things are for the old and disabled. I am getting older and am disabled with MS and haven't ridin since the late 70's. I had Hondas and Yamahas 2wheelers back in the day. So as for converting riding style from 2 wheels to 3 was relativly easy for me because it's been awhile. Thanxs to all your advice on your videos I felt very confident within 2 blocks of the dealership. Don't get me wrong, I'm not getting cocky but here in NJ you have to have eye's all around you and so far so good. Thanks again and looking forward to future Spyder Videos. You and yours have a Happy Thanksgiving.

      I can't wait to get back out there riding Spyders! Heck, riding anything would be nice at this point. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving as well.

    Got my 2013 ST-S last spring; the middle model, as you called it. Had ridden bikes in the past, but with a little age and some back issues, I decided to get one of these guys. You're right about feeling safe; very stable and rock solid. First time I had mine out on the Interstate, I kept noticing that I was rolling along at 90-95! Did a little customizing to it over the winter; seat and frunk paint. Check 'em out!

    I know you posted this 6 years ago, but I am considering a Spyder. I've been riding for close to 50 years. I had a torn quadricep tendon 3 years ago and the side effects of the injury have made their way into my hip. I don't feel safe on two wheels any longer. I LOVE riding motorcycle. I didn't think I would ever get to this point in my life, but here I am. I would rather ride in a saddle on three wheels than in a cage on 4. I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and other Spyder channels, just trying to get as much information on the Spyder as possible. Thanks for the videos, I really enjoy them.

      My first Can-am was a 2012 spyder rt same as the one in the video. I rode it for 6 years and just traded it in for a 2019 same make and model. My old lady loves it she feels much safer than she did on my 2 wheeler. I have had both knee's done and thought I would have to give up riding. The Can-am has allowed me to stay on the road. People say it's expensive I say price any other trike. You'll love your Can-am even more.

    Just another ol' buzzard
    At 75 I have decided to return to riding. It has been a long time with no cycle of any kind. At first, I thought of standard motorcycle.
    Then it occurred to me that at this late age, if my skill levels began to deteriorate, it my cut my riding short and I spent a lot of money.
    My clutch hand suffered injury and gets sore really fast. Half a day riding and it becomes really painful. I was not aware that the Spyder had a DCT system. Hoooraaay! When I began researching the amenities, it became very obvious a Spyder has much more to offer than most motorcycles.
    If all works well this year, I will join the many others who have recognized the value of this kind of riding. Comfort, safety, fun, visibility just to name a few. Living in WA State, north of Seattle, comfort gets high marks. Riding in the rain can gets tiring fast.
    I am confident this will allow me to ride longer and happier.
    Thanks for your videos. They are very informative and very well presented.
    RIDE ON AND STAY SAFE

    I have a 2016 Spyder RT S I bought new. Next month I will be 72 Been a life long 2 wheeler since I was 16. So this was an adjustment. The biggest thing for me was turns. I discovered a "push/pull" technique that helped me a lot. When turning right, for example, I push with my left hand and pull with my right. It is very difficult to "muscle" around a turn. As a 2 wheeler, just a lean would accomplish the turn. Try the push pull method and see how that works for ya. It is WAY less effort. One other thing, I am 6'4" and have shoe size 13 XXwide. I had a lot of trouble getting my cruise Control to either go on or stay on. It kept kicking me off cruise. Well, it seems I my foot was hitting the stem of the brake petal (under the petal) which kept kicking my cruise off or would not let me engage it . A simple move my foot a little to the right solved the issue.

    I have a 2010 RT and I rode mine to the Smokey Mountains from Central Florida with about 15 fellow bikers. Hi, I'm in Australia, and we're just about to have the launch of the 2014 models next month, I'm heading down to my "local" dealership for the night festivities. I've liked the Spyders every since they first hit our shores in 2008, and now the 1330ACE engine is out, this'll be the year I get my RT-S. I've heard a lot of negative comments about these bikes, generally from people who know zero about them, and have never ridden one, but I've also heard a lot of positives about them, from people who don't think they could ride a "normal" bike but would love to hop on one of these. Unfortunately here in Aus, it's a bike licence only thing, but I know BRP here have been lobbying to have them exempted to allow car licence users to ride them.
    Love the videos, you do good work! Keep it up!

    I lost my balance 4 years ago after a major stroke so 2 wheels aren’t going to be good for me anymore. That is the only bad result from the stroke that remains. I drive for a living and earn safety awards every year. I drive about an average of about 230 to 250 miles Monday through Friday. The Spyder is the answer to getting back on the road with the wind in my hair!!! May have to put off the purchase until next season but I’m a buyer for sure! I just turned 60 so I’m not a kid and not an old man. I have owned and ridden mini bikes and motorcycles my whole life, as a matter of fact I still mace my 1st street bike, it’s an LTD 750 Kawasaki. My wife suggested I sell it and I freaked out! No! That bike would never sell for what it’s worth to me!!! LOL!! It’s mint, been garaged kept since new with about 35000 miles.

    Hi Shawn, Love your videos and I've been a subscriber for over a year!! I just rented a 2016 Spyder Special Series for 4 days while vacationing in Florida. Loved it!. Only one comment. The machine seems to want to follow the crown of the roadway. In areas where the road surface is uneven I found it difficult to hold a line. It needed constant steering input to keep the Spyder going straight. In some highly banked curves I actually had to apply pressure to the bars in the opposite direction to go around the curve. . Is this normal ??

    I've heard bad things about these in the past as well. 'They're easy to flip' 'they're for old people who try to look cool' etc but with what you said in relation to the Goldwing I agree. If you still have pretty good acceleration with a radio, comfortable seat for long rides (including passenger) and you have fun while in the open air I don't see why this would be a bad idea to buy at all! Sportbikes you wouldn't want to ride long distances, Harleys may not be fast enough for you and the stability makes this an awesome machine indeed for all around!

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  Před 9 lety +1

      Bob Frankenstein - We've been selling them since they came out in 2008, and I can assure you, they're very reliable and the owners absolutely love them. The older crowd of owners didn't show up until these big touring models can out a few years ago. The younger crowd far outnumbers the older riders... They can't flip! All the safety controls will not allow that to happen. You'd have to run one of the front wheels up ram at high speed to even come close to flipping one. The Spyders aren't all that fast, a Harley could out run one, if that puts it in perspective. Though a lot of the kids hot rod them with turbo's, etc, then they're pretty damn fast! They have the same motor that Aprillia used in the RSV1000 and EBR uses in his bikes now. Rotax makes the motors for all of them, and BRP owns Rotax... Even though they're very different than riding a two wheeler, they're no less fun to ride... The touring models are definitely comfortable for the long hauls, and do attract a more mature crowd.
      Thanks for watching and commenting Bob!

    Shawn, can you be very specific about your camera and microphone setup? I have a GoPro 3+ Silver. I have a side mount piece on my FF helmet that does ok but when recording I only get the sound of bike and some air noise. Really interested in how you get the audio(your voice) to come through so nice. BTW love your passion for what you do. I'm going to test ride a RT at Daytona BW.

    Hi Shawn, After 45 years of riding, the past 28 years on Goldwings (3 of them GL1800s), I just took my first test ride on a new Spyder RT (for about an hour). I have Neuropathy in my feet and supporting the weight with a passenger has become problematic when I need to use my feet to manipulate the bike. The 2 main things that jumped out at me when I first started my ride was 1) it was like the first time driving rack-n-pinion steering, and 2) the bike follows the contour of the road, ie; if the road cants, so does the bike. My Wing never changes with road cants. I've also had 4-wheelers for may years and I'm no stranger to their handling characteristics, but wasn't expecting the canting at highway speeds. Knowing that you also rode 2-wheelers for many years, is the canting and steering something that you get used to quickly? Do you eventually ignore the canting?

    I enjoyed watching your video. You seem really knowledgeable about the spiders. Do you know if it's possible to move the brake petal to the other side of the bike? Or have you have any experience with the aftermarket hand brakes that they make for these?

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  Před 10 lety

      Lol, you'll do just fine. Before you take off, the two wheels out front are what has your attention. But once you're off and going, the fact that it doesn't lean with you in a turn like a bike gets your attention the most. After a few miles you don't really think about anything but enjoying the ride, just like any other bike.
      The one thing that bugs me is all the attention the Spyders get. You can't just stop and run in the store, or god forbid get gas. Next thing you know, you've created an event... Even ol silver topped women will stop and ask you questions! I kinda like to keep a low profile... lol

    Hello Shawn,
    Thank you for posting your entertaining & informative BRP/Can-Am Spyder Roadster videos. You’ve helped me immensely in deciding whether to aggressively pursue purchasing a loud “Harley Davidson Tri-Glide Ultra Classic” or a quiet “Spyder Roadster Touring Limited” in 2020. I do have some questions for you that I do not believe you addressed in either your videos or the comments below: 1.) “What IS the average expected mileage (city -vs- highway) on a Spyder RT?” 2.) “Are shop manuals available for purchase by me?” 3.) “Do you recommend a laser alignment for a Spyder direct from the factory?” 4.) *NOTE: In another Spyder CZcams video: the drive belt from the Rotax engine to the rear wheel had slipped off, damaging the bearings in the Rotax engine & bending the spindle shaft to the pully beside the Rotax engine the belt is connected to. It was noted to be a (2) couple $1,000 dealer repair as the engine would have to be pulled. Any thoughts?
    P.S.> Like you, I too; am an aspiring photographer & travel videographer. I’m undecided whether to invest in the “GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition” or the “iOn Air Pro 2 Wi-Fi” or a combination of both. I’m both amazed & impressed with how quiet the Rotax engine IS compared to a Harley Davidson engine and with the clarity of your voice in the microphone as you narrate your videos!!! You’re an inspiration to me, thank you!!!
    Bye for now...

      Hi Jason, That's awesome that you're looking into the Spyder RT!
      1) From what I'm hearing from customers, the 1330 RT's are getting between 32-36 mpg. As near as I can tell, I'm getting around 27 mpg with the way I ride.
      2) The factory shop manual can be purchased by the public.
      3) We laser align all the Spyders straight out of the crate from BRP. Yes, I would have it checked.
      4) Out of hundreds and hundreds of Spyders I've worked on, only two belts have been replaced. One from a tarred rock being stuck in the rear pulley and the other from abuse (Spyders don't make a great dune buggy). None of these belts ever fell off. Belts are a non-issue.
      Thanks for watching and all the kind words!

    Looks like a sweet ride. I happen to be a DAV, been riding since 1966, have diabetes and some arthritis problems. Had to sell my 750 2 years ago, but got that itch back, but don't trust right leg anymore to hold up bike with me & wife both on. Looking for something to hop on and ride 2-4 hours at a time. Do you think this would be a good fit for us? Never rode 3 wheels before, but I heard you say that after a few miles it feels just like a bike. Would appreciate any comments or recommendations you might have for us. Thanks. JD & Linda.

I have been riding for almost 50 years and recent knee surgery is making it difficult to two up ride with my wife on our Yamaha Royal Star Venture. I've been considering a Spyder RT. I think they are very cool and they look as comfortable as our Venture. I would like a 2014 or newer because of the bigger motor, running at lower revs. What's your opinion of the 2 cylinder vs the 3 cylinder.

    no, it actually feels like you're sitting on a snowmobile, because that's basically the design, like the two front wheels would be the 2 skids and the rear wheel would be there track, so they are just like a snowmobile. We've had 7 snowmobiles at one time, I've had many of dirt bikes, go-cart and a 4 wheeler ATV, so I'm sure I wouldn't have any problems riding one, and my buddy used to have a 3 wheeler, so I've ridden a lot of different vehicles.

    Very cool, but I had a question on cornering. When you're in a car and take a hard turn, centrifugal force pushes you away from the curve. I guess it's just a fraction of a 'g' but still can be a strain on the body and even squeal the tires. On a bike you lean into the curve, thus cancelling out the forces on you and the bike - kind of the same way you'll see skiers carving their turns. I wasn't able to tell from the video how it works on the Spyder. Do you feel the forces of a tight turn the way you would in a car? Or is it more like a bike?

  • @22anchorman
    @22anchorman Před 8 lety

    Hi, just looking to buy a rss se5 but not sure with cornering as that worries me that you have to work harder than a 2 wheel and if you get it wrong it can throw you off. In my country, they are 5 times cheaper to licence on the road and you only need a car licence rather than a bike one. Is it hard work on a road with tight corners where as a 2 wheel you could go say 40 MPH, with a spyder, you would be pushing it at that speed?thanks.

      Thank you very much Nhandu457! I haven't heard any complaints from our taller riders. Last year BRP introduced their Tri-Axis Adjustable Handlebars, and we've sold and installed quite a few of them, but oddly not to taller riders. As far forward as they can be adjusted, one would think that would give the rider more room... All in all, taller riders have been quite happy with the Spyders.

    Hi Shawn, I just stumbled across your video's..they're great by the way. Right now I'm deciding between a 2015 Spyder RT-SE6 and 2014 Goldwing. Having owned a Goldwing in the past, I'm hesitant to move away from it. What are your thoughts on the ability to perform evasive maneuvers between the Spyder and the Goldwing? Seems like there is more risk and less agility on the Spyder when trying to avoid an obstacle. Thanks again..

    Hello Shawn, i wanted to know if the can am would make a good daily bike. my budget puts me in the range of the ST and RS-S which drew me in due to their trunk space being phenomenally big i will likely spec mine out with saddlebags as well. As far as handling goes id like to know how well it fairs in rain just in case i get trapped out in san antonio at a car meet or doing small runs for myself when im not doing serious hauling

    Man I want one of these. A couple of problems however. I lost my right leg in a motorcycle wreck in 2003. I wonder if one ordered from the factory could have the break pedal moved to the left side without costing a bundle extra? I also have no idea how I'd carry my small manual wheelchair. I guess I'd have to get a trailer but to haul that trailer everywhere is not appealing to me at all.
