The way Mac McClung is schooling them in the dunk contest, might as well just bring in Jordan Kilganon, Isaiah Rivera, Jonathan Clark and the likes just to make this dunk contest more interesting.
I think they either have to do that or retire the competition. Has there been a single "Great" dunk since Gordon's last competition? Just Matt and he's not in the NBA. He's close so they can sell it as okay, but I think the only way to entertain the crowd (without someone like Zion entering) is to bring in the amateurs and make the dunks next level again. Then you move it earlier, improve the skills challenge to something exciting, and make the 3 pt contest the centerpiece.

I feel like they can revamp the dunk contest because it's such a staple to the game and was once the most amazing thing to my 10 year old eyes. But it has gotten so egregiously dull with no fan engagement, no sideline hype, no creative pushing of the envelope with no namers that it might be time to lay it to sleep. I mean Jesus christ my black messiah... A G league 6'2 talent has to enter into the NBA all star weekend to be the savior of the dunk contest , shameful.

The best dunk is the one requiring minimum risk of injury, minimum effort and is done routinely. That's why "the best dunkers" are not competing. This is a show to get people excited. And after 100 years of dunking (putting a ball in a basket from close proximity) there isn't much innovation left, at least meaning flashy moves that can be recognized by an average fan on a TV. There is room in finesse I'm sure but like the commentator says "they're the same dunks like last year". So i guess finesse is out. That leaves us with one thing (besides people growing a third hand) : change of rules. Group dunks, trampolines, spring boards, etcetera. Bu then it becomes more of a circus and less "ball" and i guess people'd be complaining all over again.
Dunk contests now days are either hit or miss. The last good epic one will always be 2016 with Lavine and Gordon. Hell even 2020 was better
I honestly don’t think that bigger names participating will make a difference,I just think we’ve seen every dunk that’s humanly possible ,unless someone can pull off some 360 between the legs twice or backflip type stuff I think the dunk contest has run it’s course
I think what happened is Maclung came in with a few very high risk dunks and on his first he missed, then nailed it, but they scored it mediocre. He saw the high scores for the normal stuff the others were doing and decided to play it safe. He kept getting high marks for just jumping real high and doing a cool finish so he kept the high risk in the bag and did stuff he knew he'd nail first try. No one else had anything to compete with him so he took the easy path. A little excitement, but no WOW factor. Give Brown credit for coming out and risking looking like a fool, but you can't even compare his dunks to Gordon or Levine. He's just not that guy.
So no way for the crowd to get hyped because everything was cool, but not exciting. The judges f'd it up when they underscored Matt's first dunk (either because they didn't see what he did, or because they marked him down for missing the first time). Something people aren't considering is that the NBA now has big guards on almost every team. Big guys don't jump as high as little guys (not counting Zion) and they get hurt trying. You have an occasional Aaron Gordon or Zach Levine, but most of them are going to look normal in a dunk contest. They may have killed this tradition with the race to find 6'7 guys with handles and great 3 pt shooting range.
The need to judge the dunks during the all star game itself and name a champion from the game

Have you checked out the first professional slam dunk contest. It was the last year of the ABA and it featured Dr. J and David Thompson. Dr. J (Julius Erving) won it with his dunk from the free throw line.

People always talk as if players are so much better at dunking nowadays but that Wilkins-Jordan showdown 30 years ago was a million times more interesting than that piece of sh*t we got yesterday...
It's interesting because seeing the dunks before or not, Vince Carter, Dominique or Michael had so much more style they'd still be getting 50s today with the same dunks. These guys try but they just aren't that guy.

He's a great talent but talk about failing up.....team sucks, plays in the Rising Stars competition and gets eliminated by a G-League team, plays in the skills competition and gets dropped in the 1st round.....The guy needs to just shut up and play basketball until he's consistent enough to be a great player. As a 3 point shooter he's average, there are about 50 guys in the NBA better. As a center (or even a power forward) playing near the basket he's practically unstoppable.
If you're dumb enough to have a 7'4 guy with touch and the ability to dribble and spin and as a coach you put him 25 feet from the basket to chuck up 3s (which he's not great at), then you deserve to be fired for being a re tard.
