i propagated this cacti from University of Arizona campus and planted it in a cut in half water bottle then planted it at my parents house in California and its doing great! I dug it up today and has a lot of roots.

I aquired a cutting from Obesa Nursery in S Africa aproximately 2 years ago.
The plant flowered on one occasion earlier this year once but due to strong winds I never witnessed the full bloom unfold as the winds damaged the flower buds.
For an unknown reason a few months later some parts of the plant tip developed a grey ash area what could be best described as a being physically being burnt by fire. The plant calloused over and has carried on growing. I live at the coast so its not from frost damage. We do not have very cold winters here. The lowest morning temperatures in the middle of winter would be around 7C.
I purchased a second rooted cutting from the same nursery today. I think they are facinating plants and belong in a collection.
Their only downside is they grow very slowly and the original potted one has never shown signs of pupping. I plan on planting this one in the ground.

Mine did that too. It's from sun exposure and is normal.

@@QueenofSucculents Does too much sun exposure cause it?

@@Palantir_Daily Yes...at least I think so...I'm referring to gray scabby patches at the top of the plant.

Thanks for the info. BTW - These plants are sometimes listed as Pachycereus schottii.

I loved my totem pole cactus so much that I dug it out of the ground in AZ and have moved it to CA. It is just about 10 years old and never grew any arms so I could not simply take a cutting. I Removed the entire cactus. Any tips on the best way to plant it? Toward the bottom its diameter is very very small compared to the rest of the plant and I am afraid it will break.

This was informative but it was a little difficult to follow with the way the editing went, I couldn’t keep up since so much stuff was cut out.

One thing I was confused about is that he said they can't be propagated by flowers, only cuttings. But later he mentioned the little brown flowers. So can the flowers be pollinated to get seeds? Would the seeds produce normal schottii and not the monstrose? I have two cuttings right now, one is rooted but hasn't grown and the other I'm just starting to root. Love these cactus!

I have a multiple huge guys, and I need to cut some arms since they’re growing up into my porch roof. My question is: can arms be replanted even if they’re over 4 feet long? Or could I cut each arm into smaller pieces and propagate them?

I'm out of my depth here. Contact Serra Gardens.

Yup! You can take large cuttings. My Uncle gave me about a 4 foot cutting and I planted it in my front yard.

These are definitely not rare. Not now. Not in Phoenix

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  Před 5 měsíci

You’re right, and I was astonished to see them everywhere in Phoenix years after I released this. How very provincial of me. Of course every plant is rare somewhere, but no question the title needs changing. For that matter I probably should remove the video because the nursery is no longer there!

@@QueenofSucculents excuse my naivety, but I’ve never heard the word provincial. I guess that means you are responsible for all the totem poles in Phoenix. There are a LOT. People are selling these all over the place. They are the hottest cactus on the private exchange market by far.
