See Wanda Mallen's Weird & Wonderful Succulents
You're about to visit the large garden and multi-room greenhouse of plant collector Wanda Mallen and husband Gary Vincent. Wanda shares expert tips, takes us through their two acres, and shows us what she's currently "addicted to."
"There was nothing here 25 years ago when we started," Wanda says. A big priority was trees for dappled shade, so Gary obligingly jackhammered planting holes in decomposed granite. "The good thing is DG drains well," Wanda says.
In an extensive multi-room lattice greenhouse built by Gary are dozens of species and cultivars of Sansevieria, Haworthia and Gasteria, plus aloes and euphorbias. Tropicals include bromeliads, ferns, and epiphytic succulents from Asia and South America. Indoors and out are marvelous crested, monstrose, caudiciform and/or variegated succulents; and odd paddle, spherical, and columnar cacti.
Walls are orange, blue and bright yellow, like the Talavera pottery she collects. Adding whimsy are metal garden sculptures small and large, and (my faves) Gary's clever, creative birdhouses.
Wanda and Gary's garden will be on tour during the Cactus & Succulent Society's biennial convention to be held in San Diego April 23-27, 2025. (That's what she's referring to at the end, when she says, "Come see for yourself").

Oh wow. How inspirational! We have lost many plants this summer due to lack of rain and it has broken my heart having to rip them all out and replan the garden. But having decide to totally replant with cactus I am now so excited and inspired by the gardens I am seeing on CZcams and this one is amazing. beautiful trees, how do you think the new CA regulations will impact the transportation or sale of the trees? from what I heard one can no longer move or cut the trees. I guess the exception is if you a multi million dollar solar farm.

I have fledglings come to my yard mostly finches and sparrows and the little shimmy shake they do is the cutest! And the way they explore my ornamental trees while mom & dad forage brings me hours of happiness. I also have mourning and white wing doves who act as “mother hens”… I’ve noticed that the parents trust these doves with their offspring. I’ve seen them keep some gently in line without the parents being too fussy about it.

so, since it stops the mother plant from growing larger and makes it start to grow pups, I could do that to a cactus I don't want to grow any larger and it would stop growing and use it as, say, a decoration or something that I wouldn't want it to grow larger than it is already?
Well, "cactus" is a huge category. Depends on the type. But yes, in general, damaging the tissues can promote the growth of offsets. Even many woody plants will do it; after pruning, they'll produce multiple stems or branches.
I am definitely a color and shape person. I love having a collection of echeverias of different leaf shapes and colors. My goal is to grow echeverias from babies to adults and display them in beautiful succulent pots. I also recently started a love interest for aeoniums.

Hi Loren -- I'm so glad you like my channel and enjoyed the video of my own garden. I'll do another video tour, but I need to wait until after the winter rains. The rest of the year it's not as photogenic due to high heat, frost or drought. In spring, everything's blooming, fresh-looking, and green with new growth. Right now (midsummer) the acacias are dropping seed pods everywhere 😜

What a wonderful way of putting it, Jodi! You know, gardens are constantly in flux. Once a garden is photographed for publication, or is on CZcams, it stays the same forever. Considering the work that goes into making it perfect, that's a reward---and a relief for its owners.
