In this episode, Jeff interviews Dr. Will Busliewicz. 95% of people in America are fiber deficient, and fiber is the primary fuel for the microbes in your gut. So what happens when you malnourish your gut microbiome? Today Jeff and Dr. Bulsiewicz discuss the myriad chronic diseases that are downstream from poor gut health - and how to eat to avoid them.

Hi Dr. B. I retired last June and slowly adjusted my diet starting with eliminating sugar and flour. Was diagnosed with Barrett’s disease. This is when my plant based Journey began. Right now I am a pescatarian. I just finished your first book. I have been focusing on becoming plant based for 9 months and lost 50 lbs with 20 more to go. I am now ready to tweak my journey. I am starting the 28 day plan and realized I just need to make subtle changes in my eating plan. I just ordered your new book. So excited to dive in. I love the way you teach. You have a wonderful calm demeanor. Easy to listen to every day. I feel great. This is the best time off my life. My golden years. Thank you for your expertise.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🧬 *Our genes are like a switchboard, influenced by epigenetics, not pre-programmed for disease.*
03:47 🧩 *Science is filling in puzzle pieces, revealing the bigger picture of gut microbiome's impact on health.*
05:27 🤔 *Understanding the "why" behind dietary choices is a powerful motivator for making positive changes.*
10:51 🦠 *The gut microbiome, with 38 trillion microbes, is an ecosystem crucial for digestion, immune system, and metabolism.*
13:55 🌐 *Human health is more dependent on the gut microbiome (99.5% of genetic code) than on human cells.*
17:21 💊 *The post-WWII era saw a focus on antibiotics and pharmaceuticals, overshadowing the importance of gut health.*
21:48 🧫 *Microbial diversity in the gut (hundreds of species) is a measure of health, akin to the resilience of ecosystems.*
25:18 🌍 *Modern lifestyles result in lower gut microbial diversity compared to traditional, hunter-gatherer cultures.*
27:38 🌍 *Gut microbiome diversity is crucial for health and goes beyond just nutrition. It reflects the complete environment in which we exist, including lifestyle, sleep patterns, physical activity, stress levels, and more.*
28:35 🔄 *Gut microbiome diversity can be increased by positive lifestyle choices and reduced by negative environmental factors, predisposing individuals to various diseases.*
29:30 🌐 *Microbes in the gut are unique, similar to individuals with different skills and dietary preferences. A diverse microbiome functions like a team, complementing each other's strengths.*
38:05 🌾 *Prebiotics, such as fiber, are essential as they serve as the preferred food for gut microbes, promoting their growth and enabling the production of short-chain fatty acids (postbiotics).*
40:39 💡 *Focus on postbiotics (short-chain fatty acids) is emphasized as they have significant healing effects throughout the body, repairing the gut, improving metabolism, lowering blood pressure, and influencing various health aspects.*
47:12 ⚖️ *Short-chain fatty acids play a role in shaping the immune system by recruiting specific cells, ensuring a targeted and precise immune response. Studies suggest a link between a high-fiber diet, short-chain fatty acids, and a more effective immune response to respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.*
52:44 🍽️ *Dietary choices impact gut microbiome and COVID-19 outcomes. Plant-based and pescetarian diets show a reduced likelihood of moderate to severe COVID-19, while low-carb diets may increase susceptibility, highlighting the importance of fiber intake.*
53:42 🦠 *Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress may contribute to severe reactions to viral diseases, including COVID-19. Intestinal permeability, influenced by diet and other factors, can lead to chronic inflammation.*
56:09 🍽️ *Short-chain fatty acids like butyrate play a role in regulating insulin sensitivity and addressing insulin resistance, connecting the gut microbiome to metabolism.*
57:36 🌱 *Diets lacking in fiber from plant-based foods can contribute to overeating and obesity due to a lack of activation of satiety hormones.*
01:02:58 🧬 *Individualized nutrition, considering gut microbiome, blood lipids, and continuous glucose monitoring, is crucial for optimizing metabolism and improving health.*
01:07:35 🔄 *Gut microbiome influences postprandial blood sugar, and understanding these dynamics can help tailor diets to avoid blood sugar dips, overeating, and metabolic imbalance.*
01:13:11 😟 *Gut-brain axis: The gut microbiome, short-chain fatty acids, and dietary choices impact mood, energy levels, and even play a role in conditions like depression.*
01:14:37 🧠 *Short-chain fatty acids can repair tight junctions in the blood-brain barrier, potentially affecting conditions like brain fog and reducing beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease.*
01:16:15 🚨 *Constipation may be an early sign of neurological issues like Parkinson's disease, indicating the gut's role in neurodegenerative diseases.*
01:17:42 🚫 *Overconsumption of ultra-processed foods, with numerous additives, disrupts the natural life cycle of food and contributes to health issues, emphasizing the importance of a predominantly plant-based diet.*
01:20:27 🌱 *The entire process of food decomposition, soil formation, and nourishment of new seeds involves microbes, emphasizing their crucial role in the circle of life.*
01:21:35 🍞 *Industrialized foods designed to resist microbial decay can pose challenges when introduced to the 38 trillion microbes in the colon, affecting health.*
01:22:05 🥩 *Overconsumption of animal products, especially in the US, can disturb the gut microbiome, promoting the arrival of inflammatory microbes linked to health issues.*
01:23:29 🌽 *Balancing the diet with fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes is essential for optimal gut health.*
01:26:07 🦠 *A study shows a shift to an animal-based diet results in gut microbiome changes within five days, including antibiotic resistance, highlighting the impact of diet on microbial health.*
01:32:03 🌾 *The backbone of a healthful diet is beans and whole grains, emphasizing affordability and accessibility for promoting heart health, reducing cancer risk, and longevity.*
01:38:51 📚 *The Fiber Fueled Cookbook is positioned as a toolkit for optimal gut health, providing diverse, delicious, and affordable recipes that support microbiome well-being.*

Just starting to read the comments and I don't think this video is for me! I was a vegan for about 10 or 12 years and 10 of those years I was desperately sick! I can't get into all the details but I had a severe form of chronic fatigue syndrome and almost every system in my body was breaking down. For almost 10 years I felt that I was going to die and people maybe laugh when they hear that but until you have that feeling in your body you don't understand. Most people cannot live on Plants alone because meat and dairy has protein in it that cannot be found in plants, even if you combine Foods. The only thing that help me to overcome it was by going back to meat at every meal because it contains purines and that is what I needed to finally become more healthy. Even though I still struggle with some things that metabolic typing diet saved my life!

I surely am NOT laughing. Humans are omnivores. Even in the earliest chapter of Genesis meat was also part of the human diet as were plants. Too much of any one thing is not balanced. Also, everyone's diet requirement can be different. Yet, if you compare teeth of a veggie eater like deer, elk, cows etc., to an obligate carnavor such as lions and wolves they are strictly hunters of meat. They cannot digest veggies on their own. They do not possess the digestive enzymes to do so nor do they possess the grinders to further crush the plant matter. All they can do is cut and tear off chunks and swallow. Yet, by eating herbivores who can digest plant matter, eating these including the digested matter in their mouth and still in the digestive system of their kill, they get the nutrients of what they need. Likewise, these herbivores have strictly cutting and grinding teeth, no way to digest meat. Humans have both, cutting teeth up front with pointed teeth and then those flat-four cornered pointed grinding teeth we call molars. All those along with the digested enzymes in our human saliva breaks down first off followed by the rest of our digestive system which then takes over. It's all really cool.😊

In my early 20's I was vegan for about 4 years. It did not suit me at all. Allthough I tried to eat as well as possible I felt tired, energyless and had difficulties in keeping my weight up in healthy kg's. I also developed allergies to all soy products and most of the nuts and seeds. In the end I just had to stop. I added oily fish and organic eggs into my diet and cut out most of the beans and grains and I got my health, energy and life back. Now been living like this almost 30 years since and I would never go back to veganism for any reason. For some people it doesn't work!

I wonder why there are many people who are actually recovering from very bad chronic diseases and mental illness with a CARNIVORE diet? Although they eat full meat only diets, they recover and if they go back to any plants foods it brings back the illnesses. Not EVERYONE, but MANY are recovering.
Plants aren’t always bad, but some are particularly worse that others. They have lectins, oxilates etc that wreak havoc on the system. People eat too many of these and make them sick. Example is spinach- it is a high oxilates food. People blend 1/2 to 1 lb in blender thinking it is good for you. IT’S NOT. Oxilates are like slivers of glass in your system. Meats and dairy do NOT have oxilates.
I will say with any carb food even a “processed” bread very high in a fiber (Keto like) RAISES my blood sugar, resistant starches also raises sugars. (I’m on CGM). I’m working on going from very high numbers to normal. I find fasting and meat only to be able to get numbers down. Any carbs raises BS. I wish it wasn’t so, but for now I’ll be on mostly protein and fat diet and lettuce as an added ‘green’ once in awhile :(. I’m actually having better BM with carnivore than fiber based diet. I was a perfect specimen of a person with BM until I was exposed to 20 family members that were recently CV vaxxed and were around me for 2-4 days july 2021. For the next 2.5 yrs I’ve had diarrhea most days! NEVER IN MY LIFE UNTIL THAT WEEKEND HAS I HAD THIS ISSUE. I found that it might have been ‘shedding’ of the vaccinated all over me a non vaxed. I’ve had NO cv since the beginning of this mess. It has been found that the vaxed are LOSING their immune systems, T-Cells, etc. I’ll stay mostly carnivore for now. I can add fiber in powder form if needed.

Dr Will makes a huge mistake if he says a low-carb (or even keto) diet is low in fibre. Obviously, it can be, but it is effortless to have huge amounts of fibre included in your diet. It is like saying a vegan diet is healthy and finding out the vegan only eats sugary pastries and drinks hot chocolate or coca-cola. Possibly the research would have reflected more honestly if the divisions in the research were not made on diet "titles" but on do you eat a lot of fibre?

Very few people are lectin-sensitive, and yes, soaking legumes and seeds will make them more easily digested and likely eliminate reactions in those who are sensitive to lectins. I'm in a functional medicine circle and most of us have de-bunked Gundry's theory.

      Presuming no intestinal blockages:
STOP giving your child MIRALAX!!! You want to ruin her for life? Get with a dietitian to balance out here gut minerals... Like magnesium citrate, sodium and potassium intake. Increase fluids as a mineral drink, not just straight water. Eliminate all sugars for at least a time.
How do you not know your child is in fact DEHYDRATED completely and you keep giving her Miralax further dehydrating her? This is absolutely a drug NOT too be given to a 7 year old without Dr. Supervision.
