Each bite of food we eat has the potential to modulate our genetics and impact every cell of the body-donât you want those levers to be moving in the right direction? Eating for health is one thing, but eating to beat disease is an even more intentional step toward prevention and longevity. I was so excited to sit down with internationally renowned physician, scientist, and author Dr. William Li to discuss how we can leverage food to optimize every system of the body.
We dig into:
How Dr. Li got interested in âFood As Medicineâ while developing cancer treatments
Why eating to beat disease is not the same as eating for health
What food would Dr. Li bring with him if he was going to be stuck on an island?
One thing Dr. Li knows everyone needs to do better
Is dairy good or bad?
Whatâs the deal with soy?
The 5 defense systems to support optimal health and Dr. Liâs 5 x 5 x 5 plan
We talk about this and so much more. I know youâll love this conversation as much as I did!

Iâve been in a less developed country for the last year. Agriculture here never took on the fertilizer and pesticide practices of the West. Animals raised for meat or eggs are not raised with antibiotics. Breads donât have preservatives. Foods are less processed overall. Iâve lost about 25 pounds in the year Iâve been here and donât suffer from all the GI tract problems Iâve had for years.
It sounds like your in Mexico.
In What magical place are you?
Mind sharing this location?
What's the life expectancy there?
the states food supply has over 150 ingredients banned in Europe yet it remains in the food, now that is killer
I am 87 years old and have had heart arrhythmia since I was 14. It has gotten worse over the years. Six months ago the arrhythmia completely went away. I had read that fluoride in the toothpaste maybe a cause of dementia. For that reason, I stopped using toothpaste with fluorides. Three months later, the heart arrhythmia was gone. This has been verified by my cardiologist. I think it was the toothpaste, but I may be wrong.
Fluoride is a poison. I hate having it put in the water. Means we have no choice. It doesn't seem to do the job it was meant to do. Children's teeth have got worse not better.
I've hunted for fluoride free toothpaste but have never found any in the UK. I now use sodium bicarbonate soda. We used it in the the mouth care tray in the unconscious or frail patient in the 60s.
Also, just as an extra preventative. Try magnesium!!!!
That is wonderful news
đđ
That sounds really interesting. And I wonder if fluoride also causes other issues,eg brain fog.
Dr Li and Hyman
My Dad was BRITISH AIRWAYS MEDICAL OFFICER for 30 plus years based in Bangkok.
One flight home I had a miserable allergic reaction from beef with preservative bought in Lagos by the time I got to London o had huge hives and went to medical centre at Heathrow airport. They gave me a tiny pot of calamine lotion which ran out not long into flight. So when I landed in BkK I rang home to get some calamine ready.
When I got home my mum had a Calamine ready plus a lotion made from Galangal leaf pounded up and white pure alcohol. So I said put one lotion on this side the home lotion on the other side The immediate relief from the green galangal leaf mix was unbelievably good and instant.
Oh my goodness! As this bad reaction lasted days my Dad explained must have been the beef containing the preservative.
So if you like Thai coconut soup galangal is a ginger look a like ingredient in there. So thatâs why we grew it in our garden so had the leaf to make the super lotion. So this experience puts me to absorbing every word youâre telling us! THANK YOU
Excellent discussion. Love the format. I am not taking probiotics, will add that. I am a retired physician, physically active and not on any medication. Cook my own food. Strongly believe, you are what you eat.
Can you please tell me which children's chewable Dr. Li mentioned?
Hope you told your patience that not about statins and metformin and other such show called medicine
Top foods: coffee, tea, nuts, Brassica (Cruciferous) vegetables, stone fruit (plum, peach etc), berries (Both can be dried fruits), oily fish, soy (natural staple types, not ultra processed), cacao (& powder but less so after made into chocolate with sugar etc, so dark chocolate has more flavenols to stimulate stem cells to repair better), mushrooms (Culinary over medicinal, shiitake and miitake both),
Supplements used to topping off Dr Li takes Omega 3, vitamin D, probiotic specific like lactophillus reuteri (sourdough, Parmesan cheese), akkermansia)
Avoid things which trigger inflammation including ultraprocessed snacks (processed soy snacks included).
Aaaah! Thanks for this. What a rabbit hole of a conversation.
Hero
Thank you so much!!!
The interviwer should give more opportunity to the wise interviewed to speak. The interviewer has lots of knowledge but we'd like to hear what the guest brings to us. Just my opinion
A Balance â is ideal!
Ask your question, then listen. Do not interrupt.
Nope! Not gonna happen here guy/gal đ€·ââïžđ€Šđœđ€Ł
Amen! There were a few times that I became irritated because of the interruptions. But, the information they both shared was very insightful and useful.

I agree
Truthfully I donât like social media. Iâve since deleted all my accounts but I keep YT for information like this. I use the internet as a tool not a dependency for sanity.
Loved this but itâs just so confusing how these Drâs talk about health being how we have always been taught eating nuts, fruits and vegetables while other Drâs are talking about no fruits and vegetables because of the sugar and say carnivore is the new way to health or Dr Gundry talking about Lectins and say no to eating almonds, legumes, tomatoes. So confusingđ”âđ«
Humans absorb animal protein way better than plant proteins. I start my day with whey protein coffee drink, then eggs / meat.
About 30 grams animal based protein is needed to activite protein synthesis. 100+ grams total per day minimum. Check out Gabriel Lyon.
Listen to a variety then make up your own mind. After all, itâs your life.
This new meat, meat, meat craze is crazy! Every single body is different. Different Ethnic groups have different nutritional needs, for example, the Irish. Different blood types have different nutritional needs, Trust your body, trust your cravings, trust your instincts. These meat disciples are going to have big time Liver and Bowel issues before long.
@@user-bg2tn4kg5m agree, carnivore will explode into health issues and I for one cant wait because I am sick of them and honestly, I dont understand this type of person, do they actually turn into an animal eating animals, seriously.
No matter what you eat just donât eat processed. Whole foods are best. Donât drink alcohol! Limit sugar! Easy peasyđ«
The rest is history. Made some real stupid decisions and a few good ones. Now I run a small firewood lot that I started oct 2020 just recovering from a fall and a chipped upper cantor hip bone. So after my surgeon advised no surgery was necessary . I heal fast and should be back in the woodlot by may 3 for my 83 birthday
Happy birthday. Please take best of care of yourself. And eat very good cooked foods that this video give information to. And enjoy everyday.
Happy b'day đ self care is essential! đ„Ł
Your a MacDonald like me........we have tough genes .....I am in my eighties too.
Mr Mcdonald you are so blessed with strong bones. God bless you. From the Philippines.
Love Dr. William Li - he has a WEALTH of information, but the conversation was difficult to follow many times due to over-talking, interruptions and laughter ...
Gawd, the laughter was so distracting and odd.
So dang distracting and annoying, g whizzzz!
Lmao you expect them to narrate like an AI that are unable to convey with no human emotions?
I hate that too.
Nonsense. It is a natural, constructive interaction. Nothing there to change. Perfect
It would really help people if you guys put out an actual grocery list of foods including specific brands of some foods, how much to eat, when to the eat them, etc. Sometimes the hardest thing for people to do is simply getting started. What do I stock up on and how can I preserve them (freezing, etc.), how do I prepare certain foods, what supplements are worth consuming, etc.
Dr Liâs book Eat to beat your Diet includes suggested plans with recipes. He also suggests foods to have in pantry. Love this book
Eggs,lentils,garlic,beans,peppers,berries,teas,all vegetables, lettuces,radish,sprout,sweet potatoes, cabbage,rice, avacados,quinoa, tomatoes, olive oil, apples,oranges,squash, pumpkin, kale,carrots,cucumbers, manukau honey, eggplant, garlic,ginger,mushrooms, celery,dark chocolate, bok choy.watermelon,bone broth.
Get yo lazy ass in gear and LEARN . Do you not comprehend that YOU are the DRIVER of YOUR OWN DO IT YOURSELF HEALTH VEHICLE.
Please let Dr Li SPEAK!
It's a conversation - not an interview - it's okay a back or forth discussion.
It is his podcast, his friend, free info! They are friends interacting. If you even asked vs acting so entitled it might help âŠor donât watch it.
@sandy, his his his mime mine mine, that believe is the problem with the world today!
â@@sandyschneider6792YEAH AND WE R THE AUDIENCE WE WATCH TO LEARN FROM THE QUESTS
YES!!! - i have commented on this before - i love dr. Hyman - but he is bad at this - i actually think he wasn't too bad this time - sometimes he doesn't let the person he is interviewing get a word in edgewise - and he always interrupts them just when they are about to say something you really want to hear !!!!! - then they lose the train of thought - i have turned off interviews because i just couldn't stand it - he is not the best interviewer!!
I would have loved to hear Dr Li say a few things uninterrupted. It seems every time he would get going on a subject, he would be talked over by the interviewer, and his flow would get disrupted. He would finally get back on track and get swatted off again.
On the contrary I love the collaboration and appreciate both Dr Li and Markâs contributions. Mark has a wealth of knowledge to share and Iâm here for it!
Collaboration yes, but allow the speaker to complete the thought before adding your comments. Itâs easier for both speaker and listener. But I do like them both.
I love them botb....cause I know the wonder of proper nutrition đ
@@Pammywong he didnât. What are you talking about??
@@Pammywong both are enjoying their conversation, thatâs what a talkshow looks like.
Just a tiny bit of constructive criticism: Dr. Mark, you don't need to finish your guest's sentences â€.
They're both doctors; he can't help it.
I wish I has an hour and a half to learn what these foods are. Need a Cliff Notes video!
agree, it was a bit boring, heard all this many times..
Is there a directory of Food As Medicine doctors? After having 3 stents placed in 2013, and two more placed in 2022, I see a cardiologist every six months. I could probably count on one hand how many times the subject of nutrition has even come up, much less been discussed. And I've never heard a cardiologist, or any of the doctors I've seen over the years, mention "gut health" or "microbiome" at all.
Looking at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine might be a good place to start? Or, try The Institute for Functional Medicine?
Orthomolecular Medicine would be what youâre seeking. Itâs nutrient based approach to healing and much more.
If most people cannot get enough Omega-3 in a whole food diet (34:07), I wonder why more (supplements) than what is in natural food is considered better?
Dr William Davis, was a cardiologist and now focuses on teaching people about gut health and microbiome.
This is so true đź
Thanks to both of you. A fascinating conversation about health through food. Dr. William Lee's book "Eat to Beat Disease" is a book we purchased and it helped us a lot. We listened to his lectures on CZcams and learned a lot from him about healthy nutrition, I wish there were family doctors who would understand the power of nutrition instead of giving drugs in abundance.
Mother nature is definitely a great provider. We have everything we need in nature if we only know where to look and this doctor tells us. Great video. Thank you.
Cliff notes, with time stamps please
What we really need to be doing is when we're eating these whole foods of fruits and vegetables and nuts etc. They need to come right from the ground...
Those plants that are planted in the ground have a relationship with the bacteria because the bacteria will go up into the plants, leaves and roots system. They take what they need and leave behind probiotics. So when you eat the food you get all the good nutrients.
Those set up do the hydroponics do not have any probiotic exchange with bacteria.... And those that come from professional farms, They kill all the bugs and the bacteria...
Everyday I eat a banana first thing in the morning with a glass of water with a pinch of salt. Then I'll have one sausage, a tangerine and a cup of coffee. No sugar.
He said
For lunch I try to have serving of rice or beans along with a vegetable and a meat.
I'll usually have another tangerine toward the night and possibly some blackberries or blueberries.
It works well for me
These 2 doctors are the best to learn from.
Very informative! Since I lost my brother to metastatic melanoma in September 2022; I've cleaned up my diet and have lost 70 lbs. I also deal with melanoma and see the Dr every couple of months. Their dietician wanted me to go vegan and we compromised and I add in grass fed meats (mainly some chicken, turkey and fish (limited)) and I feel good and my blood work is great. Thank you!
Change nutritionists.
Fantastic đ€©
Love these two drs. Informing so much to so many. Listen and you shall learn.
No carbs in the morning keeps the bloodsugar flat. Just almonds and eggs
Thank you
what about fruit like blueberries & raspberries
@@Mag-us6iz eat them after a workout or before
Almonds and spinach = kidney stones
Iâm a busy person, as most people, and donât have 90 minutes to learn what can be said in 30 minutes.
â„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïžDr. Li!!! We all want to listenâšđ«âïž
Great interview guys. Lots of valuable information in the second half of the interview. The interviewer probably could let the interviewee speak without being interrupted so much. Tx
And in terms of cancer treatment. In the 80s there were a number of articles published about Macrobiotics (a plant based, high fibre diet) and it's potential effect on cancer and cancer treatment. They hadn't done the research about the microbiome, but it was clear if you ate this way the benefit could be extraordinary.
I canât stop saying, âyes! Yes! Yes!â Keep spreading this powerful message đ
Never been in the same room with such a powerful duo!!đ Dr. Hyman, thanks for having Dr. Li on your platform.
I love Dr. Hyman's interviews. They are so helpful. But it is very frustrating that when he asks a question, he constantly interrupts the answer being given and changes the subject.
You Doctors are the best! Thank you for all your incredible information! Can you please talk about food to treat arthritis next time, thank you in advance!
Thanks Mark for all your hard work! I am so grateful for you⊠my husband and I eat better and I have noticed my mental health is better!
I like the interjection as he adds additional information and clarifies the information shared. Lively conversation which shows me itâs information theyâre excited to share.
Super instructional! Thank you so much! Iâm 72 & determined to stay healthy. With your info (& many others willing to share) Iâm know Iâm doing my best & still enjoying life! Blessings! đđ»đ€©đđ»đ
One of the best conversations i heard! Two brilliant doctors!!!!
Dr. Hyman, you are greatly appreciated. Greatly. But, please, the guest's knowledge is sometimes ...very...hard to grasp due to interruption and rabbit trails in the conversation.
These doctors impart such valuable information!! Love them both!!
Great discussion †. Thank you
Thank you Mark Hyman for the useful info you have provided me in your books I bought and now your CZcams presentations.
Thank you for a wonderfully insightful talk, by two of the best. â€
Awesome podcasts, thank you gentlemen, shared đ
Thank you for this discussion.
I loved how this video educated me. Love from the Philippines.
I learned the soy-cancer connection in my nutrition class in nursing school in the 1970s. We know better now but was hard to change my thinking on the subject. Good talk here.
Mark, I just got to say you have such a cute personality and great humor. I remember you from saddleback church years ago. Thank you for all you do, God Bless.
This is a fascinating discussion on the subject of longevity.
Among other Natural foods like natural coco was an eye opener for me.
Natural Coco is available in some societies as Coco Sticks,
Grated into a powder to make coco beverages, taken as breakfast as a tea.
Thank you guys for this amazing healthy discussion.
Just love it.
To your health and mine. đ±đšđšđŠ
I could listen them talk everyday. They are like power foods, powering my brain with knowledge. đ
If you do listen frequently, it does help you glean More each time, while reinforcing what you've learned! đ
I eat salad and veggies and legumes for breakfast. Same sort of things for my second meal. Dont eat a third meal. Vegan, 65 and excellent numbers. BP 98/62. Last cholesterol test was 150. But i am not that interested in food, so doing this is easy for me. More people need to get a hobby besides eating. Food has become too much of a thrill for a lot of people and its making them unwell.

Cholesterol below 150 is not healthy per these doctors.
More like most people need to UNLEARN Bad Habits.

Love Dr William Lii!! So much knowledge that I am eager to learn!! Thank you!
We need more doctors like this in the US ! If a doctor is over prescribing med then you need to have another diagnosis besides do your due diligence as the information is at your fingertips!
Thank you so much . Your videos keeps me grounded with staying track with my daily eating .
After his enthusiastic endorsement of tea , I searched for additional information. The subject of oxalates came up. He also endorsed cacao which is high in oxalates. It leaves me confused.
Great video

Very good discourse.. I enjoyed it....I always admire these converted MD's...I actually love Dr Mark's outburst of laughters when he talks(wish I could get him to be my own PCP)...its kind of cynical but as a food researcher with much interest in how food informs our bodies, I understand his laughter....and Dr Li is of Asian descent where they are usually serious in their demeanor.... I keep relearning with these great men!..keep up your excellent work đđŒ đđŒ đ and God bless
I love how he shares his knowledge. Thanks dr William li and dr mark hyman
Great interview, many blessings to both â€
I am amazed how people survive and live even 70 years inspite of toxic environment and bad habits they practice?.
Yeah but they have a low quality of life and many diseases pain meds operations etc
I get so confused and thoughtful when I hear people say, âWe were never meant to live this longâŠ..â. It seems to me we are living a long life in the face of our systems being completely trashed in so many ways! Iâm astonished.
how many of those people are surviving and having a full life without any daily pills needed??
@@lulamatlock5613 none . Some people I know wants tablets to heal with out changing their life style. They want to stay the same from cancer of the liver treated to colon cancer gross obesity and diabetes type 2. A person has to change himself, we canât change any one( out of our control, Epictetus a Greek stoic philosopher).
Cancer is increasing for people in their twenties and thirties
This was very interesting and informative. Thank you Dr. Li and Dr. Hyman. I love the way you both show your enthusiasm of the subject and your manner of discussion. Again, thank you very much!
Thank you so much for sharing this great information. I have learnt so much from following both Mark and William and have shared with my friends. The world needs to change and look towards preventing disease and creating health rather than waiting until someone is bad enough that they need medication or surgery. Sometimes medication is needed but doctors need to work towards getting people healthy and treating the root cause so people donât need to stay on the medication. So many of my friends donât know this. Please keep spreading the word and sharing your knowledge. It is priceless đ
Excellent video, I enjoyed every minute

Wow! I feel so much hope.

Hyman, your constant interjections to get your contribution in, where both of you are talking at the same time drives me nuts.
I think itâs all good to have both people getting their points. Itâs a conversation I donât know why people have to look for the negative when there when thereâs so much good information
This was excellent = gonna go to the A place to check out his books! THANK YOU!
Great format and discussion. Caveat, individual sensitivities, thyroid, kidney stones etc. Balance and self control and discipline are our lifestyles. Dr. Hyman I'm still having gaps.
Focusing on gut and brain was encouraged with this conversation.

I've seen 7 cardiologists because of massive heart disease in the family, a gastroenterologist, and a rheumatologist. Every single one agreed keto was OK short term to lose weight, but eating a plant based diet was going to be the healthier option along with exercise and intermittent fasting. They suggested forks over knives . The number of saturated fats long-term is not good for our bodies.
Excellent information the more you hear it the more you understand it itâs not that complicated fresh organic food lots of food with fiber⊠But I love it being explained so you understand the WHY âŠthank you both very much
Gentlemen you both are really God's sent from above, in the realm of natural preventive health care. When I talk about what I have learned from just listening to your podcasts, I take the time to say: "I am not a doctor". That's how knowledgeable I can sound at time. Like a pro really. One question though, I have heard lately that Choline can be very beneficial to the system. Why eggs were not added to your benefitial breakfast list? Drop me a quick reply please. Thanks again for all you do to help us regain good health naturally. Thanks to both of you Dr li and Dr Hayman.
Thank you Dr Hyman! I appreciate all your little nuggets of information â€đđœ
Mark, let your guest complete their thought/communication and stop interrupting them.
It's a conversation - not an interview - it's okay a back or forth discussion.
As there is no transcript, I take notes to pass on to many other people. So, it becomes crucial that I get my facts right.

Whole fat no sugar Greek yogurt if one feels some dairy is good. Cacao hot chocolate beverage regularly study had shown can increase stem cells.
An example of hood meal they said salmon, steam broccoli, few berries and a few tree nuts for dessert. Soy Whole Foods are helpful, myth that the estrogen in soy can be harmful. Eat foods with small list of ingredients ⊠skip food that has ingredients that are unknown. Cacao nibs are small piece of the pods on cocoa plant. Good and tasty. Hydration is important. They said cook broccoli in a little bit of real olive oil with a little bit of minced garlic and quality organic soy sauce. Try to boost your health shield everyday the best you can. Mostly plant based foods, enough protein, lots of diversity of plants, legumes as a core with spices, various leafy greens, mushrooms sautéed and soy sauce shrimp paste and chile sauce, shiitake mushroom and make are cooking and medicinal together. Supplements can be good to top off to fill in the gap. Omega 3 is a focus. Vitamin D. Porchimi mushrooms have vitamin d. Slice them and set them in sunshine for 3 hour to get more vitamin d before you cook them. Even 1:22:21 white button mushrooms this way. Core supplements: vita D, omega 3 and probiotics.
