  • Rikers Island is a 413-acre island in the East River in the Bronx that contains New York City's largest jail. Named after Abraham Rycken, who took possession of the island in 1664, the island was originally under 100 acres in size, but has since grown to more than 400 acres.

It was under Clinton with Joe Biden leading the charge in the senate that 3 strikes was implemented. Under Reagan the Iran Contra scandal happened that flooded communities of color with drugs. Rikers is and was a living nightmare, arguably during the time period of this piece, LA county jail was similar, where 'fight or fuck' were the usual first words one would hear upon internment there, and they were not said without full intent. Im told LA county has gotten a lot better, but i actually dont know, rikers to date is still a total hell hole regardless.
In both places during the period, sodomy was absolutely rampant. Imagine getting a DUI and ending up there as a non gang affiliate without a prior, your done moment one..

Reading is a big part of the problem and the solution. They say 70% of the adults in prison read on a fourth grade level.
So let's make sure all kids can read well for their age. Then some of these social problems will be less of a problem. If a kid is reading on a fourth grade level by high school they're probably more likely to drop out. High school work will be more complicated for them.

How has life changed for the victims of these criminals and society due to its caring more about the criminals than their victims. MOST of these criminals are not a victim of society but choose that lifestyle of crime as a preferred one. I spent several years working in this facility and would prefer that this reporter interviewed the victims of crime. Anyone changing from a criminal, alcoholic, drug addict or whatever involves a personal choice and decision. Until that happens, no external force is going to make someone change.

Because of the way Puerto Ricans stuck together as one 👊🏽 and Blacks was always in different fractions and groups. Blacks were oppressed by Puerto Ricans because of their strong brotherhood and ties all coming from the same island of Puerto Rico. Where as Blacks mostly identified and grouped up by whichever New York borough they derived from breaking them down into small tribes instead of unified as one for many years to come. This would change when one kid introduced the Blood LA gang culture of banning together and unifying to combat a common enemy of oppression from the Puerto Ricans and it spread like wildfire through the Blacks of the New York penal system and caused a war that the Bloods were very successful so successful that it spilled over into the streets, throughout the state, and before long throughout the country. With the invention of the internet and kids wearing their Set’s colors in music videos and “reppin” their hoods, being a gang member became hip with everybody jumping on the bandwagon from low income areas to middle and upper middle class teenagers were all Bloodin and Crippin just because their favorite Rapper was reppin they had to be hip and down with it as well. Gang culture wholesale.

Puerto Ricans 🇵🇷 were oppressed by blacks also in the system prior to the Latin Kings being opened up the NY faction. Latinos had to unify together to battle against oppressive renegade 5%’s and Anglo Saxon correctional officers especially in Collins prison up north.

There is no jail in America that was worse then holsmburhg prison in Philadelphia pa. Nik name the terrordome, where prison stabbings and beat downs were the norm. Even shootings occurred within the prison walls due to guns being smuggled inside the prison walls. Furthermore, holsmburhg was the only county jail at that time that housed Al Capone in a cell before him being transferred to eastern penitentiary.

This is false, It was one of them but it wasn’t the worst in a America it’s wasn’t even on the list of top 10 most dangerous jails/prisons plus it never reached the numbers of violent incidents that Rikers had nor was it the size of Rikers and Rikers was so bad that they had a warden from russia come and he didn’t even know what to do with them, It’s a reason why Rikers had to shut down half of it’s blocks
