  • Is there a market for later failed video game consoles, is Ian still keeping up with game prices, what if Sega produced Super Mario Bros., and more!

    Stuff like the Amico and the VCS really aren't in the same league as stuff like the 3DO and the CD-I. The 3DO sold around 2 million units WW and the CDI was closing in on half a million units WW. Some people actually owned those things and they were released from huge companies. They had big marketing campaigns and took up shelf space in big box stores. Also, actual games worth playing came out on them. So there is at least some nostalgia for them from a moderately sized group and others might be interested in some of the games stranded on those platforms.
    The Amico's games are mostly on other platforms already and the ones that aren't look like junk. It will be lucky to crack 10,000 units sold judging by the pre-orders and "physical" game sales and the VCS doesn't even have any original games and is basically dead already, isn't it? Who's going have nostalgia or care to collect them in the future? The couple hundred people who made shilling for Tommy their personality for a few years? I'm sure they'll already have one in their closest.

    As someone who owns 30 + consoles (I've turrned into Gamester 81 as I've gotten older. LOL). There is a huge difference between consoles like CD-i, 3DO, Atari Jaguar, etc, compared to Ouya, the current Atari VCS (it's only been out for a few months and it was dead out of the gate), etc, is that even a console like the CD-i had a market presence during the 90's (I remember watching those "Burn: Cycle" commercials on TV when the CD-i got rebranded as a game console during 1994 and Burn Cycle came free with the newly designed CD-i that looked more like a game console (the "450 model" which was small and had a flip cover for the CD tray... that's the one I've owned for years). I never owned a CD-i as a kid, but I remember seeing the commercials (the CD-i Burn Cycle commercial being the most memorable since I wanted to play that game) so there is a nostalgia factor there. Also, all the games are physical, so as long as I have the money I can easily buy up the GOOD CD-i games like Burn Cycle, The Apprentice, The 7th Guest, etc. Same applies to Atari Jaguar (I remember EVERY Jaguar commercial as a kid. Those Jaguar commercials were highly memorable, for better and for worse. LOL), the 3DO, etc.
    The modern failed console do NOT have any of this. Ouya commercials? I'm 99% certain I NEVER saw an Ouya commercial mainly because they don't exist. I only heard of the Ouya through CZcamsrs talking about it, but to my knowledge there were NO commercials or ads of any kind. On top of this: NO physical games. The Ouya's online store shutdown a few years ago. Unless you decide to mod that thing, it's unusable in a natural way. Unless you mod it, it's a damn paperweight. The Ouya isn't just a dead console, it's a DEAD, DEAD console. I can still buy used games for a CD-i, Jaguar, 3DO, etc (which is why there is a market for these failed 90's consoles) I can't do that with an Ouya. All of this I typed out about the Ouya applies towards other failed modern consoles like the modern Atari VCS.
    Finally... the Mattel Hyperscan. I haven't jumped into that console. Yeah, it has physical media. But it has some HUGE problems. Namely, you must have the games AND you must have the cards to get those games to fully work and trying to get all the cards is a HUGE pain in the butt if you don't buy them in bulk. It also doesn't help that the scanner on the Hyperscan has A LOT of problems (it fails a good number of times and you have to keep scanning till it works. And that's for a good condition Hyperscan, many of them have scanners that no longer work). I'll eventually get around to getting a Hyperscan, but only when I have enough money to get all the games and as many cards as possible AND a Hyperscan that works halfway decently all in one shot.

      @devilmikey00 Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah, being able to go hyper mode during grinding while playing an old Snes/PS1 era rpg is a god send. Some of those games are ungodly slow to get into and out of a random battle so grinding takes forever. I'll never be able to go back to the original ps1 version of FF9. Having to sit through the camera sweeping across the battlefield at the beginning of every single random battle and the animations being half speed because the game ran at 15 fps. No thanks.

      Yeah, the failed 90's consoles weren't made by a bunch of random nobodies with crowd funding campaigns trying to cash in on nostalgia. They were made by big companies, had marketing campaigns, sold in big box stores and some of them, like the 3DO, sold in the millions despite being failures. It's apples and oranges.
