Sajam directly pointed that out that neutral is rps.

Secondly, when your argument against moves being hard to react to and easy to use it doesn't change that its not fun to play against. The game cant be too defensive because you can still have mix ups and throws without the game having every other character having a way to skip nooch easily and get free mixups. When someone keeps getting in easy and applying mix ups like that the game becomes mostly just "hold this" @@eliastew9636

One of the things that I really like about uni is how it encourages the defensive play style by making most things reactable or option selectable but often overheads need to be blue shielded to get a punish, os can be baited, etc. so there's always some kind of risk that the defensive player needs to commit to. It encourages the offensive player to be more patient and try to force reactions out of the opponent instead of just running them down. I mean unless ur playing Seth or something

Hi, I'm the OP from the tweet that LordKnight reposted, and I've spent the last 4 days watching my post get dragged, misinterpreted, and torn to shreds in every possible direction. During this time people have painted me as some kind of delusional boomer who pines for "an age of honest footsies" that never existed, who hates unga bunga aggression and neutral skips. I'm no longer upset, but I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify what I really meant by my original post, as 180 characters is simply not long enough to make a statement.
When I said, 'the age of footsies' (poor wording, in retrospect), people assumed that I meant that _all_ old fighting games were footsie fighters. What I _actually_ meant was "most fighting games between the years 2015-2020". This means Early SF5, SamSho, MK11, Granblue Versus, Strive Season 0/1, even Tekken 7 gets referred to as a footsies game on occasion. This is not a statement I claim as my own, I took this assertion from what other FGC members have said about those specific games in those specific years. Everyone I knew that was seeing the pattern of 2015 fighting games was bemoaning how every popular fighter was turning into a "footsie fighter", with the rare few exceptions of games like BBTAG, BFTG, MVCI, TFH, DNF, etc.. Remember the reveal trailer for SF5 that featured some wild combo extensions that never made it into the final game? Remember those first few playable demos that had all sorts of wild tech that people were FURIOUS about their removal? How they were upset that they took away the "fun" and made the game "about neutral and footsies"? *That.* That right there is the "age of footsies". And of course, even that isn't as concrete a statement as it sounds; someone is certainly going to find some wild clip of a crazy neutral skip in one of those games and use it to discredit me. Most people who started posting Vega Wall Flips to laugh at me are likely never going to read this post, as they have likely never read anything past LordKnight's original retweet.
So what did I actually mean with that original post? The simplest way I could say it is that "I think aggression mechanics are neat". That it, that's all I meant to say. I just think it's interesting from a design standpoint that more recent fighting games are attempting to enable and reward aggression. I like Drive Rush, I like Wild Assault, I like Raging Chain, and I haven't played Tekken 8 yet but those Heat mechanics look super fun. I didn't even know it was called "neutral skip" until the post blew up. I'm glad that there's discourse about it, I just kinda wish I didn't have to get my faced dragged through the mud for it to happen.
Thanks anyways. Have a good holiday!

I been playing fighting games for over 30 years but playing SF6 I can honestly say I never really knew how to play until now. I took a deep dive into the mechanics of street fighter: neutral, meaty/oki, frame data, shimmying etc. So I’d say although I have been engaging in fighting games I am new to the FGC itself and boy! The amount of stuff I see in regards to people comparing SF6 to other games from the past and basically disregarding damn near everything in SF6 that can make one successful because it doesn’t fit their way of how games should be played could’ve made me not want to continue but then… I came across Sajam… and I gotta say I’ve watched new videos as well as old ones and every thought that I’ve had pertaining to my skill level not being up to par, my anxiety in ranked, my issues with whiff punishing, me linking my life worth to my performance in ranked etc this guy had covered and it has made me so much more comfortable with myself playing this game! These videos have answered so many questions I’ve had about the game, the mechanics and even me as a player! I love how he’s here for it! Whatever it is! Keep it going bro!

On the note of offence generally needing to be better than defense, this was a huge issue in a couple of games i played for a while, but most prevelant in For Honor.
On release everything was reactable OR on the reactable side of unreactable. The strongest characters were the ones that could get in fast and use those tools that were barely reactable, which was 2-3 characters. The mental stack of the game was also streamlined so that you only had to pay attention to no more than like 4 things due to the guard system.

I like aggressive characters having ways to skip neutral, I just wish defensive characters had better options for neutral-restoration. It's a real problem with certain games where someone can just hit a neutralskip and then vortex/frametrap/block pressure for the entire rest of the round because once that distance is covered there's no decent way to get it back. Maybe something like a DP that doesn't anti-air but is safer to throw out in response to getting schmixed.

    • @gwen9939
      @gwen9939 Před 7 měsíci +10

Strive has FD, burst, YRC, and deflect shield, SF6 has reversals and perfect parry. You can also just parry high/low/left/right and there's delay teching, GBVS:R has guard reversal, KoF has guard reversals, lots of games have guard reversals/pushblock/invincible reversals. What you want are defensive options that are stronger than the offensive pressure you're under. Sajam literally says why this usually makes for less interactive fighting games in this video. Safe DPs are messed up, and a big thing people hated about DNF. If a move is both unreactable, gives plus frames, and leads into a nasty mix-up, that move is usually pretty messed up, but that's often not the case. Most of the time you can either react or hedge your bets against their get-in tools, and it's up to them to split your focus and distract you so you don't interrupt them when they're doing their interruptible plus on block thing. You lost neutral because you got mental stacked, not because the move is unfair and needs an entire new defensive system on top to deal with you losing to it. It mostly sounds like you just don't know how to take your turn and allowing the offensive player to mash on minus frames.

Drive rush itself isn't such a problem but covering your drive rush with a slow fireball into a jab has no real counter in sf6, or very few counters, and certainly none that don't cost drive bar. You just have to hold that. And it's really strong, and many of the top tiers have it.
Even just drive rush jab is a 50/50 guess on the follow up. It's the combination of the speed, low cost, range, and it giving extra frame advantage. I just think it needs a little adjustment so it's not the best option for approach every time like it is now.
At low level play it's not that huge a deal, players aren't able to take advantage of it as much, but watching high level play it's just drive rush jab back and forth so often

I think a lot of people are missing out on the connection between combat sports and fighting games and how much philosophy they share.
You have neutral in combat sports, but it's typically only in the beginning on a round or after a ref break. And once combat begins you can't really return back to that type of neutral in the match. After each fighter finds spacing, one of them has to pressure and even after spacing returns, there still isn't really neutral because one player has the advantage and will essentially play into that unless the defending player just comes back.
There's too much stock put into the idea of neutral. Imo

Neutral skip is a ridiculous term period, not just because such mechanics literally constitute neutral,
but because it prioritizes this idea of "neutral" being integral to the experience of playing a fighting game. When people are fighting, what matters is the interactions, not the downtime between interactions---i.e. """neutral""".
People who bemoan the lack of downtime are complaining about their own problem of being overwhelmed by large rushes of pertinent information for them to deal with at once. That's a You problem related to your own mental inadequacies.

Something you already are probably either doing currently, or looking to do as a wiff punish. All you have to do is add one more option to react to, and what you do as a reaction is not wildly different from what you are already doing. That's not to say I'm okay with all kinds of neutral skips, as a zoner enjoyer I have a particular hatred for teleports, but I can accept that they all have options they lose to. Well, almost all. The first neutral skip system mechanic I know is actually the super.
Which is hilarious to reflect on.

I find it so funny that this was the exact SF2 match that got linked because you used it in a 5 month old video (i think it had the Abigail thumbnail) that I just watched *today* at work and did a double take just now.

"without neutral you're just playing RPS". Machabo's ears are on fire right now.

Something a lot of people seem to forget, is that agressive play has to be encouraged in multiplayer games at all times. If they aren't, you end up with scenarios where all players avoid interaction, and that's bad.
By giving players good tools that reward agressive play, it encourages interaction. This doesn't mean you won't have defensive styles of play or that characters who prefer the neutral+ ranges are knee capped.
Let's look at Guilty Gear's wild assault for example. Depending on what range the character prefers, their wild assault has entirely different effects.
Agressive characters get orange, which is faster and works well for combo extensions, it also covers the most ground fully charged to let them get in.
Big slow bois get white, which gets invincibility after a few frames, allowing them to close distance. It knocks the opponent away on hit, giving them a way of creating space against rush down. It guard crushes on block, letting them open people up.
Blue is the one I want to focus on most. Characters who prefer neutral+ get blue, which staggers on hit or guard breaks on block. Allowing them to open the opponent up or get them off.
On top of that, orange and blue can cancel the wild assault into a movement, normal, or special on hit or block. This means that those characters who prefer neutral+ can get the breathing room they need and create neutral.
Wild Assault as a whole encourages agression and can skip neutral, but the characters who want neutral have a tool to create it as well.
