even beyond top-five foolishness, I think it speaks highly of SF6's balance that the tier list you showed only goes down to C! if a game doesn't have any D or F tier characters, that's an achievement! but emotionally, we just see the top and bottom!

Also, just being real, but your character being top 5 or not likely doesnt matter to the majority of the people saying it, the reason we are losing is because we are ass and should have done ant number of things differently

People let tier list dominate their mentality. So accepting that a character is somehow worse but they still never learned how to fight them means that’s they can’t justify their loss anymore.

The thing about tier lists is that they don't even really matter to someone until they're like good good at the game. Gold rank players should not be concerned with tier lists, they should be concerned with not getting hit by random Drive Impacts.

y'all remember that time that League of Legends included nerfs to a character in the patch notes, but accidentally didn't make those changes in game? (the listed changes weren't super obvious while in the heat of battle, like damage nerfs.) the character's WIN-RATE WENT DOWN ANYWAY. cuz our brains be crazy.

You know what would be a sick tierlist? So like, you know how people get thirsty over characters, right? What if IRL was the actual video game and people from games would thirst over real people as if they are actually just characters, and we ranked them based on who their crush is? I feel like I'm not explaining this dumb ass idea but it's so funny to me. Like I spent a good amount of time thinking about it. LIke, I-No is definately thirsty for Justin Johnson. Tier lists are fr just a vessel for people to discredit people that play better than them, like seeing my main in a "low tier" just inspires me to play them more lol.

I find the top 5 distinction largely pointless unless it's so obvious that anyone looking at the screen can see it at which point there shouldn't be any meaningful discourse around it since it's largely obvious. Otherwise it feels like getting a 92 on a test where you wanted a 93 like it's the same shit

People having a hard time believing characters who got nerfed are much lower in the tier list now is weird. Usually it's seemed to be the opposite IME - people seem prone to overreacting to any nerfs a character gets, proclaiming them terrible and saying they'll drop them regardless of how significant the nerfs really are.

There is just too much variance in fighting games to rely on a tier list. Like I think in a psuedo-fighting game like Elden Ring pvp or arena fighters a tier list can work because they don't really match the variance that traditional fighting games have. Not even saying that variance or lack of variance is bad. But if you are going to be looking at tier lists for a video game you have to take traditional fighting game tier lists with a grain of salt.

As soon as the balance patch dropped I saw people in Twitch chat still complaining about Luke not being nerfed enough when they hadn't even played the patch yet. I saw how many nerfs and changes Luke got and compared it Ken (lol) and was like, "Luke got hit pretty hard. Idk what people are on about." He certainly wasn't the "biggest loser" of the patch, but it was clear his position in the hierarchy was gonna shift.

In new games the "top 5" definitely does not have a huge difference over the top 6-10 characters so it's weird to talk about the games like that, but in old games there definitely is a gap. KoF98 or Last Blade 2 the god 4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the rest of the cast, even 5th best. Edit: This is to say, people lack perspective and don't really know what a power gap is actually like.

personally when talking about character strength with my friends, top 5 is basically a shorthand for "this character is strong/high tier". For example my friends were surprised at Dragunov still winning tournaments after his nerf and I said after his nerfs he's still around the top 5(still strong but idk where people who make lists put him)

Sajam, would you be willing to discuss the "perception of top tier" characters? I've heard a lot of guilty gear pro players recently reciting a narrative about characters like Sin, Goldlewis, May being the best characters in the game but no one plays them cause they are unpopular. I just can't understand it and I would like to. I think that if those characters were actually the strongest, pro players would be playing them cause their livelihoods depend on their results in tournament. But instead, we're still seeing the same-old, tried-n-true Sol, Leo, Asuka and Happy chaos still, with random talented players breaking to various top 8s. Edit: I understand this video summarizes and expresses that the characters really aren't that different in power by much. That's not what I'm asking. I want to know why these players, who play pressumably who they think is the strongest, are adding value to characters who are not really being represented heavily or obtaining results in a professional setting?

I have played jamie since the beginning. The first month, I used tier list as an excuse, now I don't care in a way that I don't use it as an excuse, just to know people's opinions about characters just have an conversation or discussion about it.

I agree with Sajam, it should be top SIX characters that should be feathered and tarred and as a No. 7 enjoyer myself I do be KINDA clean and my character is a STRONG mid tier TOPS.

The most fun I’ve had in these games is when ABA came out, and I decided to no longer give a shit what people thought. No tierlists, no matchups, just vibes. Once I got out of my own head about how good a character may or may not be, I finally started having a blast. It also helps that she in particular is super fun in general.

I think people tend to look at "good" characters and ascribe overly fundamental qualities to them that make them impervious to nerfs, and when those characters get nerfed, retain those same qualities, and still end up being worse, it shocks them. See also people claiming that a character has no weaknesses and then they get nerfed and people suddenly point out "new" weaknesses that they always had.
