Anna May Wong appears as Herself / Katherina in The Taming of the Shrew in this British musical film. See below for scene timestamp. ⬇️ In case you're wondering, she is speaking in Cantonese, a dialect in the Chinese language.
From IMDb: "Alfred Hitchcock is credited on-screen with "sketches and other interpolated items". Adrian Brunel, in his autobiography, "Nice Work", described how he originally shot "The Taming of the Shrew" spoof, only to have producer John Maxwell reject it for not being funny enough. Brunel states that Hitchcock was brought in to re-shoot the sketch. Hitchcock is believed to have directed the Gordon Harker sketch, "The Taming of the Shrew" spoof, and the "thriller" sketch with Jameson Thomas."

I decided to change the settings of the older version of Elstree Calling to unlisted as the aspect ratio was off. Hopefully, my attempts at keeping the correct aspect ratio while also upscaling it to HD was successful for this one. If you would like to view the older version & would like the link, please let me know. Also, upscaling to HD is a learning process for me so I'll likely go back to correct past videos with incorrect aspect ratios. Thanks for your patience & understanding!

Such an unusual and interesting antique movie. Wow, it's nearly 100 years old! It's like a window on a very bizarre and different world. Experimental and surreal at times and for the large part 'politically incorrect'. I fell under its spell. It was both fascinating and haunting. Thanks for sharing!

This is delightfully strange. It's definitely of its time but there is no denying the talent and energy of these performers.

Thank you for uploading this British early talkie musical. While Anna May Wong's comical scene was very apparent, I don't see where Alfred Hitchcock made an appearance in this film. Can you point that out, please?

@@Celluloidwatcher Alfred Hitchcock directed a few of the skits including the one with Anna May Wong, but he doesn’t make an appearance in this film.

It was thoughtful of you to let people know when Ms. Wong actually shows up. Other than her appearance, this film is a bit of a strain to get through.
But I've read criticisms of her scene as well. Not necessarily how bad it is (and admittedly it's really not all that good) but on how racist and/or misogynistic it is. But I have to admit, I'm not in full agreement with these criticisms. (Spoiler alerts): First off, the source material of the satire itself, "The Taming of the Shrew" is immensely misogynistic by today's standards. Don't like it? Go tell it to Bill "Bud" Shakespeare. As to the racism, the song number with blackface just before the Anna May Wong scene is much more racist then the Wong scene. In fact, I don't find her scene racist, it's actually a good joke because it was the last thing people were expecting, this Kate being played by a gorgeous Chinese shrew speaking Cantonese (in fact, when the scene is being introduced, they almost give the joke away by letting us know Anna May Wong is in it. It almost takes away the surprise of the twist). And as for her wardrobe, which has also been criticized, I suppose it could be construed as exploitive but...let's face it, she's rockin' that outfit! 😍

Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford had recently completed a sound version of "The Taming of the Shrew". It would have been well known to audiences at the time. So...extremely broad parody of what was already parody. Poor Anna May, getting roped into this. She makes another cameo in the movie, but you have to have a sharp eye. The "business end" of making a sound movie is near the beginning. It shows the making of Wong's "Flame of Love", and you can pick her out playing the sanshin/shamisen-a kind of 3 string instrument similar to an American banjo.

Regarding the 3 Eddies , the dancers before the scene you mention , they were African Americans who happened to be over here when the film was made.Excellent dancers and not white men made up as people usually think

@@robertsmith5970 You are quite correct, The Three Eddies were African American dancers highlighted by a somewhat infamous for his time Chick Horsey and were primarily American vaudevillians. Nevertheless, the whole blackface genre, even when African American's performed in it, by today's standards is considered racist and/or insulting.
