- The face of Anna May Wong will soon be gracing the US quarter. But who was this Hollywood icon? Stony Brook University professor Shirley Jennifer Lim, author of “Anna May Wong: Performing the Modern,” told Inside Edition Digital, “Anna May Wong is one of the most charismatic, photogenic, and compelling actresses of the 20th century.” Lim said that the Chinese-American actress’ appearance on the quarter is “an incredible moment that has been really a long time building.”
I honestly don't know why everyone's having such a conniption about this. The quarter has always shown us different things over the years. How is showing a picture of an actress who was unjustly ignored despite the fact that she was incredibly talented any different? She was an amazing actress, loved watching her movies growing up!
Over harriet tubman? Idk mate
@@keen9166 Harriet is meant to be permanent. She’s going on a bill.
@Asain Racist speaks truth Donald trump deserves to be on the dollar not some randon actor from 90 years ago
@Asain Racist speaks truth lol someone's angry 😆
@@keen9166Donald trumps bum ass isn't going on anything, we haven't had a single president worth putting on currency since roosevelt died. Honestly currency shouldn't represent anyone or anything specific, it should represent our nation and its ideas. Coins used to be plastered with the sexy face of Ms.Liberty or some dope ass eagle or something, adding lincoln to the penny wasn't a mistake but it sure as hell lead to one. George Washington refused to put his face on the dollar coin and it was made illegal to have any living man put on currency since 1866, we did him dirty with our quarters and dollar bills.
This is actually my first time hearing about her... I'm surprised celebrities can get on money now.
This is funny 😂

Loved her in the technicolor silent movie Toll Of The Sea. She broke barriers for Asian actors to be seen in movies.
This is so funny
One thing that never gets said is Anna May Wong was the first leading actress in a Hollywood technicolor movie. This being The Toll of the Sea. It was the only the second technicolor movie in the world. The first was from England almost a decade before around 1914. Wonderful actress. I have about ten of her movies.
I'm not trying to be rude, but didn't China have their own movies?
@ʔɓɛɓɪj I can promise you that most white people don't know German people from Irish people, Scottish or Swedish white people either.
@@gardenwonder7977 I believe she was referring to television movies. If so, the answer to your question will be no, because the United States, England and perhaps Germany were the first countries to embrace TV movies. Now of course if this was stage theater, China definitely was one of the first countries along with England, France and others long long ago.
Wow why hasn’t anyone talked about her smh she looks like an icon 😍
She is so beautiful and ICONIC ♡

I just learned about her in my women’s study class and it feels good to know about her! I’m glad at least my school is teaching us about this.
Did you watch any of her movies? She never played any significant roles. Even TCM couldn't find any good movies to celebrate her.
ong im also taking a wmns class but we didn’t talk abt her though
In Asia they teach math and science. Here we do women's studies. 😂🤣🤡
My dad use to say that he had a crush on anna may wong. Very beautiful and talented actress
Fantastic program. Thanks especially to Dr. Lim for letting us know about Anna May Wong!
She was stunning inside and out.
I’ve never heard of her until I got a quarter with her name and face pressed on it just now. She would be stunned to see herself immortalized on the US quarter! Wow, what an extraordinary lady!
Can you imagine being born Asian in 1905 and wanting to get into Hollywood. She wouldn't take NO for an answer which shows the kind of willpower and sheer determination she had.
I like old movies, so I already knew who she was.
Kudos. Most never heard of this person. Glad they don't go 4 obvious figures like msrylin etc
She is legendary! Love her!!
She looks absolutely beautiful
I've been searching each for 2 months quarter and now I got the quarter
In the era of CZcams and Tiktok when you can be famous without any achievement, skill or talent it is remarkable how Anna May Wong has been ignored for so long. Not anymore thanks to these types of videos.
Seeing things like this gives me hope that our country is moving in the right direction. This seems like such a simple deed, but it probably means so much to some of our fellow Asian-Americans.
im glad this is happening too bad it didnt happen 50 years ago. think how progress we could have made
This is america..it's one step forward and fifteen steps back..
30 plus trillion in debt, all time high grocery prices, record crime, and lower percentage of literacy. We're heading in a great direction!
@@DaMartyr Keep your misery and hatred to yourself.
I admire her willpower to become an actress at a time when it was practically impossible for Asians to get into Hollywood. However, like most Asian women, she had a weird fetish for white men, but wasn't allowed to kiss either white or Hispanic actors on screen due to strict interracial barriers barring Asians from romantic scenes with whites / Hispanics. To its credit, Hollywood did try to hook her up with a Japanese guy though.
I heard of her while watching Hollywood on Netflix! I'm happy to see her image continuing on
Her voice! Her performance. Omg
I always thought Anna May was a beautiful sultry actress., TCM did a lovely tribute to her., iconic❤️❤️
She is such a beautiful woman, as to say Asian Americans faced discrimination especially in the 1940s and it has been a long time since concentration camps and other forms of discrimination facing Asian Americans.
Next it will be Patty Suzuki, and probably don’t forget about Arnold from Happy Days!
Bigots gonna hate so please suffer. I’m so happy anna may wong is getting the recognition she deserves 🎉
"Bigots gonna hate"
mostly whites, obviously
I 've never heard of Anna May Wong until now.
Thank you for sharing. This was lovely 💕👍
Shes living through us now🤗 very incredible.
Y'all better recognize Anna Wong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES! Anna May Wong !!!!
I heard about her before. She was typecast as the Dragon Lady and any Asian part. But, for me, she's a beauty and classy.
I didn't know about Anna May Wong until during covid when I watched "Hollywood" on Netflix. Pretty damn good at portraying her and giving her life justice.
She left America and moved to England because Hollywood wouldn't give her a fair shake. She took elocution classes so that she could lose her American accent and speak with a British one Her most famous film was a 1929 British silent movie called "Piccadilly", which is pretty good.
It was really cool to hear her story. It's odd to put an actress on money.
Grow up, no one cares
the first woman to get a star on the walk of fame
first Chinese American movie star in Hollywood
broke ground and pushed against harmful Asian stereotypes
advocated for Asian Americans
yes her profession was in acting but she did more than just act
@@GhastlyCretin the point of the video? stop turning everything so negative smh
It’s about her being a trailblazer.
@@GhastlyCretin we get educated by every white actor in America. Why not just one asian actor?
I honestly never heard of her until I watched the Netflix series Hollywood, where they did a fictionalized version of her. She sounds like an amazing woman.
I love that we’re trying to recognize historic icons
I think everyone deserves equal representation and hopefully soon we get other women and other figures who deserve to be included
Like for example Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr. etc
It has already been approved 🎉
There is already a quarter with a Black American figure. It came out years before hers. This isn’t a zero sum game. All groups can be represented
Another woman that deserves to be on the coin is Betty White she was one of the few celebrities that wasn't controversial or flat out crazy everyone loved her and she had an amazing love for animals that few people have she deserves to be on something
@@maximumcaffeine6003 You're letting your stupidity show, so shut up and keep it a secret.
Yessss
People don't realise it now but Shanghai Express was a giant movie at the time.
Absolutely beautiful!! 😍
Love this! She’s iconic!
I’m not sure any actress should be on currency. But glad to see some diversity.
She advocated for asian americans and was the first chinese american movie star in hollywood and pushed back against sterotypes
Thanks for sharing! She’s great… well deserved recognition then!!!
Why not?
Anna May Wong led the way for future generations of Asian actors in Hollywood…notably this years best actress Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh. ❤
I think it's wonderful!
Got my first Anna quarter today!!
I hope to hear and see more about her
I have seen a few of her films, I hope a biopic is on the horizon.
The narrator is so poetic ❤
Wow! I've got to see more of her. But she was outstanding in Shanghai Express!
When Ms. Wong was not given the role of O-lan in the 1935 MGM film version of The Good Earth, she was very disappointed. But careful readers of The Good Earth novel will recall that O-lan was described as very plain looking. Anna May would have been far too beautiful to be seen on the screen as O-lan if the film was consistent with the book.

Is Harriette Tubman on the 5 dollar bill yet? Been waiting for that for a long time now
She was supposed to be on the $20.
Exactly
We will never get it and I still haven’t seen Maya Angelou
She was beautiful!
I've never heard of her it's very interesting
Everyone talking like she was born and raised in Asia lol, no matter how hard she had it she was an American
What a perfect match. Chinese and Hollywood. What a match.
she was so beatiful
I misread that as Anime Wong. My bad.
I think Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney should be recognized for their contributions to cinema. And Irene Ryan. And Fritz Weaver. And Dabs Greer. And Dub Taylor.
Batman too.
Ana May Wong was one of five selectees of the first 2022 American Women Quarters (AWQ). Add that distinction to her other list of firsts and outstanding accomplishments. ❤
Love her one movie the toll of the sea from 1922 100 years ago!
when is it coming out?
Absolutely beautiful! Representation truly matters!
When is Harriet Tubman supposed to be on the $20 anyway?
She is an iconic actress. Incredibly beautiful and talented. So sorry she had to bear all the racism and unfair treatment from both the US and China.
They need to make a movie about her life
I just finished reading Not Your China Doll.❤
My God! She was beautiful
I do love that she’s being recognized but as an Asian woman myself, I’m not sure why she would be put on a quarter. If it’s a large movement that the treasury is doing, then sure…start adding people on quarters I guess. If this is a one-off situation, it does seem strange.
Just looked it up…they’re putting 5 women on quarters until 2025. Interesting.

Same here, and I'm Malaysian living in my home country (Malaysia). Just found out about Anna May Wong in my CZcams recommendation.
Shoutout Anna May Wong
Why isn't Linda Hamilton from the terminator movie put on the quarter.
Wong also starred in the very popular Sherlock Holmes movie "A Study In Scarlet" with Basil Rathbone; playing a straight part part that did not require an Asian character.
Fun fact.... most people don't even mess with coin change nowadays.... much less even bother to look at it.... there will be a few numismatic collectors that will collect any coin but other than that this coin is pretty much a moot point....
I think this is cool. I am gonna def try an collect that coin. I’m hoping more historical figures outside of just presidents get on coins. I personally hope Booker T Washington gets on a coin.
I have a Anna May Wong 2022 p quarter with bubbles on both sides. What's the value
“Inclusion “, is priceless 👏🏾
This popped up as I'm currently watching Hollywood by Ryan Murphy

And it's cool there Multiples of Americans Historians figures in the Quarter. And I have some.
Watching this, it reminds me of Josephine Baker who lived around the same time. Similar backstories. Only Baker left the States for France.
Wow,
So we all found the quarter and came here to youtube huh….
Hey Hollywood, instead of doing sequels and re-makes nobody wants, how about a biopic of Anna Mae Wong? I suggest Peyton Lee as young Anna Mae and Lucy Liu as older Anna Mae.
I wonder who has been involved in the American story longer than that much longer I'm happy to see American progress in this way to include other people
Wow this would be awesome for my collection I actually put these new quarters I got one called Wilma The Man Killer😄✌
If it wasn’t for Anna May Wong, there probably wouldn’t be Myoshi Umeki, Nancy Kwan, France Nuyen, Pat Suzuki, Margaret Cho, BarBara Luna, June Angela, Maggie Q, Lucy Liu, Lea Salonga, Aqua Fina, Bao Ling, Stephanie Hsu, Miko Mayama, Auli’i Cravalho, Chloé Zhao or Michelle Yeoh!
I think I phoned her house way back and I was told I rang the wong number
Omg You have got to be kidding me. Actors and actresses on coins??! Against it.
So since we got a reality TV star as a president, now we get actors on currency? Never heard of the lady, but I guess she's good to be on the same coins as true leaders. 👍
